1 The Naperville Trapshooter The Official Newsletter of The Naperville Sportsman s Club February 2005 Issue Membership Committee Looking Ahead I want to thank Jim Monk for giving me the opportunity to chair the Club s Membership Committee. The Club and the shooting operation finished 2004 on a high note with membership continuing to rise and usage by non-members at an all time high! That being said, increases in membership, usage by non-members, expanded programming, safe and efficient range operations and our NPDES permit renewal represent continuing challenges for 2005 challenges requiring energy and resources that can only be brought to bear if each member shares the load. The Naperville Sportsman s Club is fortunate in that our membership is made up of a diverse cross-section of individuals and families. Although I probably do not have to say it - whether you shoot competitively, occasionally, little or none at all you re important to the future viability of the shooting operation and I personally thank you for your past and future support. continued on page 2 What s Inside President s Message... 1 Membership Committee... 1 The Fred Section... 2 Club Info... 2 Dates To Remember... 3 Out And About... 3 February Volunteer Schedule... 3 Reloading at Sportsman s Park... 4 Classifieds... 5 Calendar Member/Board Meeting Date: 7:30 P.M. - February 8, 2005 President s Message Club Updates By a unanimous vote the Board of Directors has decided to join the Naperville Chamber of Commerce. This will allow the club to maintain a higher profile in the community. Also by unanimous vote the Board has decided to join the ATA (American Trap Association). We may have a couple of events in the future at Sportsman s Park. New Membership Chairperson I have appointed Life Member, Jay Spitz to be the new Chairperson of the Membership Committee. I have also appointed Jim Zurek to be a member of the committee. They will be working on new programs for our members. We are trying to put together a course for our members who are interested in teaching Hunter Safety. 2 The Naperville Trapshooter 2 The Fred Section Members & Board Meeting We ll have our next members and board meetings on Tuesday, February 8th starting at 7:30 PM. (Members meeting followed by the board meeting.) All members are invited and requested to attend both meetings. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Dues are Overdue! Besides the benefits of membership (such as the shooting discount, annual dinner, member events and programs, merchandise discounts, league discounts, members-only merchandise programs, the newsletter, the second time out program, and a stronger connection with the program) your membership is important in MANY ways towards supporting the program and our mission. Memberships run on a calendar year. Dues were due by January 1st; shooting discounts expired on January 1st unless/ until you renew. After that there is a several week grace period when you can renew without having to pay the initiation fee. Please remit by check to: Naperville Sportsman s Club, P.O. Box 27, Naperville, IL Dues may also be paid by cash (get a receipt) or check at the counter. If you have it handy, include a marked up copy of the info update/invoice sheet which was in the newsletter which you received in early/mid December. First Time Out and Second Time Out Programs We will be offering these programs on February 20th and March 20th. These are available (only) to members and their immediate under-roof or at college family members. These programs are free except for the (member) price of the rounds. These are basic getting started type programs for the person s first and second time out trap shooting. The first time out program includes about minutes of classroom safety plus trap shooting (very) basics class room instruction plus one-on-one supervision on the line. The second time out program includes a class room recap, plus light supervision. Both include use of a gun if needed, plus what next assistance towards becoming a regular, including purchasing a gun and supplies. The next two dates for these are February 20th and March 20th. Both the 1st time and the 2nd time programs will be available on both of these dates. 7 day (minimum) advanced registration is absolutely required..to sign up contact me (Fred Turek) at or tureks@ameritech.net....fred Turek Secretary Mmebership Committee continued from page 1 Over the next few weeks, expect a brief survey from your Membership Committee. We ll be asking some blunt questions and hoping for some blunt answers. We want to know why you re a member; are you getting what you want and need out of the Club and Range Operation; what improvements do we need to make immediately and in the future; what part might you be able to play in helping the Club meet its future challenges. When you get your survey, take a moment to jot down your feelings and pop that envelope right back into your mailbox back to me? 3 February 2005 Issue 3 Out And About Star P.R. Imagine my surprise when I opened this month s Shotgun Sports and saw the bright, smiling face of Kelly Systo, daughter of members Connie and Stan Systo and granddaughter of Russ Breitwieser. Seems Stan hit the big 50 in October (belated happy birthday!) and Kelly, cake artiste extraordinaire, decorated the cake as a trap field (very Naperville looking!) with Dad hitting 50 Straight. The cake was replete with trap positions and trap house, while Dad is holding his shotgun, calling for a bird. The title of the magazine article says it best SWEEEET! Stock Art Is Bob Ash the Michelangelo of the Naperville Sportsman s Club? One look at his beautifully carved 870 Wenig Stock and you ll know why I m asking that. The butt stock is adorned with a pheasant in flight, carved in deep relief with Naperville Sportsman s Club embellished on top near the comb. The forearm and pistol grip is richly accented with apples and apple leaves paying tribute to our crab apple tree on trap field #1. Bob provided Kentucky gun stock carver Tom Skinner with a pencil drawing of what he wanted. Tom took Bob s drawing to a whole other level, surpassing Bob s wildest expectations. Bob s stock is featured on the website at Hot Members While it s not my M.O. to roam around the Clubhouse sizing up our members for their personal attraction quotient, someone already has! One of our very own members has been named one of the hottest people in the country still got you guessing? Congratulation to George Pradel, who, as everyone knows, is the Mayor of Naperville and was recently named the Hottest Mayor. This very distinguished honor was bestowed upon his honor by The Mix, radio station 101.9FM. To top it off (no pun intended) a bobble-head doll was commissioned in the Mayor s honor as he is truly Naperville s biggest cheerleader. Proceeds from sales of the bobble-head dolls benefit local charities. Run out and get one today! So there you have it, just a couple examples of how extraordinary Naperville Sportsman s Club members are impacting our community and the shooting industry. Congratulations to all!...jay Spitz NSC Life Member February Volunteer Schedule Scheduled Workers Please complete your scheduled work hours or call Jim Monk to reschedule. Thanks for your support. 4 The Naperville Trapshooter 4 Reloading at Sportsman s Park Part Three - Making Shot Shells Now that you have assembled the basic equipment, it s time to crank out some reloads for next Sunday. But first, a little description of exactly what you are trying to make. The figure to the left shows the components of a finished shot shell. What, you don t have any components? They are easy to acquire. You will need some Remington STS hulls. Bob Seetin spent a whole winter picking up after everybody, and he still has a few STS hulls to sell you. You won t find a better deal anywhere. You will need some Ballistic Products MG42/STS steel shot wads. Most re-loaders stock up on components when Scott Calhoun orders them. They are usually happy to sell you some of their stock to get you started. Many thanks to Scott for organizing the orders! You will need some steel shot, and Dennis Haffner should be commended for his efforts at ordering, storing, and distributing the shot. Remember to return the bottles! You will also need some powder and primers. The recipe calls for 19.5 grains of Hodgdon Universal Clays powder. This will propel one ounce of steel shot at 1200 feet per second. Try J.R. Shooting sports in Naperville, or Megasports in Plainfield. Call Gander Mountain before driving out there, I don t think they stock it. While picking up the powder, buy a thousand Win209 shot shell primers. Note: Hogdgon makes several powders with clays in the title, so make sure you are buying UNIVERSAL clays powder. Also Note: the recipe is specific for the Remington STS hull with the MG42 wad, Win209 primers, and steel shot. Do not substitute any of the components; you do not know what it will do to the pressures generated by the load. The picture to the left shows a drawing of the shell tray on the MEC9000G reloading press as seen from above. There are six stations performing different functions on the hulls with each pull of the handle. With Auto Indexing the tray automatically rotates counter clockwise to advance the hull to the next station. Let s talk about what happens at each station. At station one you put a fired empty hull in the re-loader. When you pull the handle down the hull will descend into the resizing collet where it will be returned to factory dimensions, the used primer will be punched out, and a primer will drop into the primer hole of the shell tray to the right of the hull. On the upstroke the tray rotates counter clockwise, the primer will drop into the primer seating hole, and the hull will rotate in place above the primer at station two. At station two, the powder drop tube will descend into the hull seating the primer in the primer pocket on the down stroke. On the upstroke, the powder will drop into the hull as the tube ascends, and the hull rotates over to station three. Pull the hull out of station three, measure the powder in it on your scale, dump the powder back into the hull and return it to station 3. I don t measure the powder in every hull once things are running smoothly. Instead I check it about every 25 shells. You will need a #26 or #27 powder bushing, depending on your machine. Put a wad around the wad rammer tube and above the wad guide on station 3. As you pull the handle, the wad guide and rammer tube will seat the wad above the powder on the down stroke, the shot will be dropped into the shot cup of the wad on the upstroke. The hull will rotate to station four. Station four is the pre-crimp station. On the down stroke the hull will be crimped about half way and then the hull rotates to station 5. At Station five the crimp is finalized on the down stroke, and then the hull rotates to station 6. Station six is the final sizing station where the whole shell is made a uniform proper size. After the upstroke on station 6 the completed shell is knocked onto a ramp and slides into your bin as the tray rotates. There you have it! See how easy it is? Put a MEC powder bushing in your MEC one ounce steel shot bar, set the depth of the steel shot wad ramming tube, load some shot into your shot bottle, some powder into your powder bottle, some primers into the primer tray and you are ready to go. As the hull tray rotates, keep adding an empty hull to station one, a wad to station 3, and a completed shot shell is made with each pull of the handle. Remember to measure the powder at station three initially and then periodically! Next month I will describe some ways to avoid mistakes and spillage that could happen to anyone, and certainly has happened to me. I will also discuss some of the difficulties the current recipe causes on the MEC9000G and how I solved them in part 5. Till then, I ll see you on the line....tom Krolick NSC Member
