1 B U L L E T I N SIR# 172 Twain Harte, CA April 2016 Website: PO Box 1143, Twain Harte, CA NEWS FROM DAVE Be sure to put the August 4, 2016 Annual Twain Harte Ladies Day picnic on your calendar. Little Sir Dave Goldemberg worked hard to get an agreement with Indigeny Reserve to have the August 4, 2016 Annual Ladies Day Picnic SIR picnic at their beautiful mountain location with a local caterer supplying picnic food. I encourage everyone to visit Indigeny at Summers Lane, Sonora just over 4 miles from downtown. Your SIR branch is run by volunteers and last month, you heard our Lunch Chairman, Pat Casey, became very ill and had to resign from the branch. Please consider helping your branch the Lunch Chairman meets annually with our caterer and the other local branches to decide on the next year s lunch menu. Then, either he or someone else, calls tables. That s it! Remember, when you see and hear a different lunch caller, they volunteered. If you re interested in helping out, please call me or see me at the April luncheon. Little SIR Blog This year s Annual Ladies Day Picnic is being catered by Sierra Smoke BBQ, a local business. Theirs is always a classy event! The full Committee will start work on April 7, 2016 The Branch Executive Committee (BEC) meets at 8:00am at the Pine Tree Restaurant the Monday before the luncheon many BEC members arrive around 7:00 am for breakfast and to enjoy fellowship beforehand. The BEC includes Big and Little Sir, Directors, Secretary & Asst and Treasurer & Asst. Many Activity Group Chairmen are there to present their upcoming activities for vote and approval. I encourage any member to attend and offer input! 2 The next BEC Meeting will be at 8:00am on Monday, May 2, 2016 at the Pine Tree Restaurant. Board Members, Group Chairmen and all members are invited Lunch Speaker Schedule April s speaker is Sean Gast, US Forest Service (USFS) Captain on the Groveland Hotshot Crew. He ll speak about experiences on the 2013 RIM fire and other major fires in 2014 and May s guest speaker is Clare Long, also from the USFS. Claire is in charge of the Rim Fire Reforestation effort and works with many public agencies and actively recruits public volunteers. Reforestation of the burned areas is critical to long term forest health and has a direct impact on our local economy. ACTIVITY GROUP NEWS Bike (Steve Happel, ) We ll ride on Tuesday, April 12 th. The destination depends on whether the trail on our First choice, South Fork Road to Lyons Reservoir, is muddy. If it s muddy, the Second choice is a ride from Copperopolis Town Square to Saddle Creek Golf course and back. I ll advise everyone as the date approaches. We ll meet at 8:30am and carpool to our destination. It ll be the Twain Harte Market for South Fork Road or the Junction Shopping Center for Copperopolis. Lunch afterwards somewhere. Either ride will be great for a group picture. Fishing (Bert Kronnick, Sonora Branch#77, , oldfishingreels@aol.com) No local fishing events are planned at this time. The San Jose SIR branch has a 4-night Alaska fishing adventure in Ketchikan planned for August 3 rd to 16, 2016 check our website for more details or contact Paul Halek. We d like for a #172 member to volunteer as our branch Fishing Chairman to work with Bert Do fish go home and lie about the size of the bait they stole? Golf (Richard Broddie, ) Date Day Course Tee Cost 5-Apr-16 Saddle Creek 11:30am $51 10-May-16 La Contenta 11:00am 2 for 1 7-Jun-16 Elkhorn 9:00am 2 for 1 12-Jul-16 Tue Lockeford Springs 9:00am 2 for 1 9-Aug-16 Micke Grove 9:30am 2 for 1 6-Sep-16 Pine Mountain Lake 11:00am $48 11-Oct-16 Brookside 11:30am $51 IMPORTANT: All golfers will need to sign up and pay the golf fees at the Sir luncheon prior to the golf date. The "2 for 1" fees are paid at the course. Golf fees listed to be paid at the luncheons include $6.00 for tournament money. A foursome of senior golfers hit the course with waning enthusiasm. These fairways seem to be getting longer and longer, one said. And these hills are getting steeper, another complained. You know, the sand traps seem bigger than I remember, the third said. After hearing enough from his buddies, the oldest and wisest of the group piped up and said, Oh, just be thankful we re still on this side of the grass! Hike (Dennis Hebert, ) The April SIR Hike will be at the West Side Railroad Grade on Tuesday, April 19, The West Side ride is an easy 5-mile point-to-point ride with minimal elevation. This trail is developed from the east boundary of the Tuolumne Township to approximately four miles beyond the Stanislaus National Forest boundary. Hikers, bikers, and horse riders use the trail. The canyon views are absolutely breathtaking. A short distance in the trail you will find the train tracks from yesteryear. We ll meet at the Twain Harte Market parking lot at 9:00 AM. Great area to take a group picture. Horseshoes (Cas Munoz, ) Seven monthly games are scheduled on the last Thursday at the Tuolumne Horseshoe Pits. The dates are April 28, May 26, June 30, July 28, August 25, September 29 and October 27th - 2 -

Twelve people showed up for the February 23 rd 5.2 mile, 3.5 hour Hike at Red Hills. Left to right, standing, the hikers are: Mike Clay, Dave Kenney, Becky Chimenti, Steve Happel, Dennis Hebert, Fred Peterson. Front row : Rich Bauman, John Avila, Bill Guenza, Lee Piercey, Bill Bamford and Jerry Jensen. SIR Twain Harte New Members You caught a glimpse of these new members when they were inducted and received their badges and roosters. Here s their mugshots please make it a point to introduce yourselves. Bob Winters Twain Harte Sponsor: Henry Beltran December 2015 Danny Lane Twain Harte Sponsor: Ron Clark January 2016 w Don Moore Twain Harte Sponsor: Bob Fisher January 2016 Tom Munoz Sonora Sponsor: Cas Munoz January 2016 TECH TALK Technology User s Group Sir Lee Allendorf asked Sir Dick Chimenti: Do you use offsite backup such as Carbonite or do periodic backups to an external hard drive? No, I don t use an offsite backup but think offsite (out in the cloud) backup is a great solution. Carbonite allows a no-size-limit backup of one drive for a reasonable annual cost. You can also retrieve files individually in case you accidentally destroy one. As long as you're not uploading enormous files (such as movies), it's just fine. You are, of course, constrained by the speed of your Internet connection. I use a Microsoft provided tool called SyncToy and backup my data to my own external hard disk drive (HDD). The drawback is that if my house burns to the ground, I lose my computer and backup. Additionally, any data files that I've created since my last backup (I usually do so every Sunday) will be lost. External HDDs come in terabyte capacities and can be bought locally, online or big box stores
