1 B U L L E T I N SIR# 172 Twain Harte, CA March 2018 Website: PO Box 1143, Twain Harte, CA Charles Column Now that many of the early housekeeping items for 2018 are out of the way, we can all concentrate on the approaching Spring and the fun activities it offers. Spring, or Vernal Equinox, falls on Tuesday, March 20 this year. It is then that the Sun crosses the celestial equator on its way north. All over the world, days and nights are just about equal. The name equinox comes from the Latin words which mean equal nights. Until that time arrives, I do hope we will see some more rain and snow before our mild winter is over. Speaking of seasons, I will soon be traveling to Australia where I will experience their early Fall. I would like to thank Dick Chimenti and the entire BEC for all they will be doing while I am away. Remember, one of our goals this year is to increase the membership in our chapter. If you have a retired friend or neighbor, please invite them to one of our luncheons to enjoy our camaraderie. Little SIR Blog If you're not already doing so, I encourage you to get involved in our activities. We re the envy of many other branches for variety of things available to us. Remember that the SIR mission is "...to improve the lives of our members through fun activities and events - while making friends for life." For the more adventurous among us, there are hiking, kayaking and biking. But if want something a bit less strenuous, there are horseshoes, golf and pinochle. And of course we have the theater and technology groups which always include dining with members, spouses and friends. What better way to enjoy yourself and make new friends?" SIR Twain Harte New Member Here s our newest member inducted on Feb 1 Norm Osborn Sponsor: Dick Chimenti TECH TALK This Month s Tech Topic: JUNK S DON T OPEN S IN YOUR JUNK MAIL FOLDER!!! The subject may sound interesting, but, that s what hackers hope you fall for. Many browsers sort suspicious-looking s putting them into JUNK or SPAM folders and those browsers are getting better doing this sorting. An containing a VIRUS cannot hurt you as long as you don t open it and definitely don t click on attachments. If you don t know the SENDER avoid it. If it sounds legit, look at the SENDERS ADDRESS. I do 5 sit-ups every morning. That may not sound like much, but there are only so many times you can hit the Snooze Button! A doctor told a discharged patient, You re completely cured. I must tell you, it was your incredible will to survive that saved you. Thanks, Doc, the patient replied. Remember that when you write up my bill. I received one asking me to verify bank information stating this was part of an annual process. IT ISN T. It even had the name of my bank as part of the senders address. It was bogus because Banks and services will not ask you to do anything like that via . Another bogus from a national bank said, you have 1 unread secured message, Click Here To Sign On. Sounds harmless, doesn t it? However, the senders address was [karl.foret@gdc.ga.edu]. Does that seem suspicious? Absolutely and nothing on the should be clicked
