The Breeze The Newsletter of the Wooster, Ohio, Branch Vol. 91, No. 4 March-April 2018 MESSAGE FROM WOOSTER BRANCH AAUW PRESIDENT Are we ever going to have Spring? I, for one, am more than ready! Susan Buchwalter But, while it may still be cold and dreary outside, I am pleased to let you know about at least one sign of Spring for our AAUW Branch. I have been notified that we have been selected by AAUW Ohio as one of the recipients of the annual Daffodil Diversity Award. The Daffodil Award, which will be presented at the annual state AAUW conference held March 23 and 24 (Chillicothe), recognizes branches that have significantly supported diversity during the most recent year. Of note, I will be attending this conference and will report to Branch members at a later date. Our local chapter met diversity goals by: appointing a diversity Chair a post which Leslie Breeden agreed to fill during the past year; encouraging programs that celebrate diversity themes which we accomplished with our recent program on The Immigration Dilemma by retired U.S. Immigration Judge D. William Evans, Jr; holding meetings in accessible locations; publishing the AAUW!Adelante! Diversity reading list in our newsletter and on the Branch website; and supporting collaborative partnerships in the community with such efforts as the joint AAUW/Kiwanis Used Book Sale, our scholarships for non-traditional students, and our support of Expanding Your Horizons and StartSmart programs at The College of Wooster. Speaking of StartSmart reminds me of Pay Equity Day which this year falls on April 10. This is the symbolic day when, on average, an employed woman will finally have earned wages equivalent to what her male counterpart made in the previous year. StartSmart, which we support each year, is designed to educate young women about pay equity and teach some strategies for negotiating a fair and equitable starting wage. It is one way to make a difference and one way your participation in our local Branch helps empower young women. I hope that you will all help our local Branch continue these efforts in 2018 by renewing your AAUW membership for the coming year which starts July1. A membership renewal form is enclosed with this newsletter. While it may seem early, we need to get our membership numbers and dues to state and national AAUW by the end of June which means we need to have them returned by May 31 in order to be tabulated by early June. Spring is also that time of year when our Branch gets together to celebrate at our annual Spring Luncheon. I hope you will all join us at The Wooster Inn on Saturday, April 14, for good food and an interesting program by College of Wooster President Sarah Bolton. A reservation form is enclosed. See you at the luncheon!

The 2018 AAUW Scholarship application and eligibility description has been posted to the AAUW Wooster Branch and the Wayne County Community Foundation websites. Applications are due May 1. Please encourage eligible applicants to apply. Questions may be sent to Chair Letty Nault at GREAT PROGRAMS THIS WINTER! Kris Evans, Branch Program Coordinator, came up with really interesting, humorous, and well-done general meeting programs this winter. On January 18, D. William Evans, Jr., United States Immigration Judge (ret.), Cleveland, discussed the problems facing immigration judges one of the largest being the case load faced each day. Tami Mosser, reporter and columnist for The Daily Record talked on February 8 about her adventures reaching her current job. Lori-M akin-byrd talked about Title IX Lori-Makin-Byrd, Title IX Coordinator and Director of Sexual Violence Prevention and Responses at The College of Wooster, discussed where Title IX started and what the future may bring. Tami M osser, Daily Record Reporter and Columnist AAUW WOOSTER BRANCH SPRING LUNCHEON AND ANNUAL MEETING It s that time of year again, time for spring flowers and our Wooster Branch Annual Spring Luncheon. We are very fortunate to have as our Speaker Dr. Sarah Bolton, the twelfth president of The College of Wooster. The luncheon will be held at The Wooster Inn this year. Be sure to send your reservation early because there is seating for just 60 people! You will find the reservation form in this newsletter. Dr. Sarah Bolton, President The College of Wooster

. PROGRAM IDEAS FOR Kris Evans, Program Coordinator, will soon begin planning programs for next year. She would like to know if anyone has heard a speaker people have enjoyed or has a topic relating to the AAUW mission that members would like to hear more about. Please send Kris (kevans943@sbgcglobal.net) any suggestions and the Coordinating Committee will do its best to incorporate your ideas into the program schedule. Along with the programs, Wooster AAUW Board established a policy for speaker honorariums. AAUW!ADELANTE! BOOKS OF THE MONTH 1) The Kindness of Strangers by Katrina Kittle. 2) Threading My Prayer Rug: One Woman s Journey from Pakistani Muslim to American Muslim by Sabeeha Rehman. 3) Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy by Sheryl Sandberg. Note: Print copies available at Public Libraries. MEMBERSHIP NOTES Anita Greene, Membership Vice President, notes that Member Sharon Taylor has moved to Colorado. She will be missed. Ellen Alter has moved to Senior Living at Danbury Woods, 939 Portage Road, #274. Alfreda Gabriel Campbell, 98, of Wooster peacefully passed away on January 29, 2018, at her daughter s home in Salt Lake City. A memorial service for Alfie is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., July 28, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church of Wooster, followed by a reception and celebration of her life in the adjoining Bruch Hall at 2:30 p.m. Her wisdom, caring, and sharing of her life with Wooster Branch will be missed. Wooster Branch currently has 21 members for next year, including a new member Nancy Stephan, Please make her feel welcome! Nancy lives at 1018 Forest Drive, Wooster and has an AB in Psychology and Math from Ashland University and an MS in Management Information Systems/Computers. Nancy would like to participate in Literary, Bookmarkers, Cinema, and Out-and-About. Remember that new Branch memberships and renewals will be collected from April - May 31, We have four male members; more are welcome! The membership form for new members or renewals which needs to be completed and returned by May 31 is included in this newsletter. It may be mailed to our P.O. Box 1191 or handed in to Treasurer Sarah Miles or Vice President for Membership Anita Greene at the April 14 luncheon.

TIME FOR ALL MEMBERS TO VOTE! AAUW National has put three proposals for bylaws amendments before the membership to vote on this spring. Members can submit their own proposals through March 22. Voting will open on April 2 and close June 9, The three items to vote on are: 1) Creating a three -year staggered board term, 2) Opening board service to those outside AAUW membership, and 3) Eliminating the degree requirements for membership. Branch members may recall that items 2) and 3) have been discussed before and voted down. The National Board feels items 1) and 2) will bring AAUW s government more in line with nationally accepted nonprofit recent practices. Regarding the degree requirements for membership, the National board feels strongly that this requirement is now perceived by many as counter to AAUW s mission and limits our ability to build the capacity needed to increase AAUW s impact. Discuss this among yourselves and state your positions to other members or Board members. THEN VOTE! OUT-AND-ABOUT TOUR OF WOOSTER CITY SAFETY CENTER Twenty members (including five husbands) took the tour given by Officer Matt Cruise on Friday, February 16. This was a really interesting and informative tour of the police and fire departments housed at the Safety Center. Lunch followed at Gionino s in downtown Wooster. When facilitator Mary Ann Merchant thanked Officer Cruise for the excellent tour, he sent her a notice of the Paws in the Park Pawty on August 12 th at Freedlander Park. Held from noon until 4 p.m., he noted that Officer Timko and K9 Haro would be there for those interested, since the tour group missed seeing any of the four K9's working with the Wooster Police. Leslie Breeden chats with W ooster Officer about the Safety Center. M embers Linda M cfalls, M imi Lewellen, Joyce Roe, and Rhonnie Black get a view of the fire and EM S vehicles located at Station #2.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT The 2018 Nominating Committee, composed of Mary Hetrick, Carol McKiernan and Susan Buchwalter, is pleased to present the following slate of new officers for the term. President: Susie Slack; Secretary: Helen Atchison. Susie previously served as Chair of the Scholarship Committee and Helen has served as Branch Secretary in the past. The election will take place at our annual Spring Luncheon in April and the new terms being July 1. New officers will join Anita Greene, who continues in the role of Vice President of Membership and Communication, and Sarah Miles who serves as Treasurer. In line with our Branch Bylaws, this is the official notification of the slate for new officers, which is required at least ten days before the election.
