2 News from the President Carey Ziebarth Hello Members, the golf season is in full swing and the course is in fantastic shape. Leagues are starting up and the course has seen a lot of play. The March Madness tournament kicked us off in what promises to be a great golf season at the Briarwood. Thanks to everyone who made an appearance at the annual meeting. We hope the information that was presented informed you about the financial status of the club. We also voted in a few new board members in Gary Carlson and Greg Hart. These are two great guys and certainly have the best interest of the club in mind. We will also be appointing a one year term member to fill a recent vacancy. Looks like I will also be filling a board position for one more term. Thanks to all who showed up in support of the club and voted in the new candidates. That said, I would like to thank Joe Rand and Carol Kirby for the time and effort the past 3 years. They have certainly made a po s- itive impact on our club. Also, to give you an update on the proposed projects as discussed in our meeting last month. We are going to have some conceptual drawings done for the pool and the clubhouse and have them posted this summer at the club for all to digest. We will also be mailing out the information to all members and discuss the financial aspect of those projects as well. We hope to have this information by mid May and out to the members after that. If we do move forward with the pool project, which has been well received and also the members first preference over the clubhouse change, our window will be late fall Again, we will continue to communicate the status of these projects and any others in the works as the information comes available. Our latest membership drive has been a huge success and I would like to welcome those new members. You have made a great decision to join our family here at the Briarwood. I hope to get a chance to meet each of you this summer out on the course! We will be putting together a short orientation for all new members coming soon as well. Finally, I would also like to remind everyone that the board meetings are open to all members. The meeting minutes are also posted at the club after each meeting for all to read. 3 News from the CLUBHOUSE Eric Smith, Food & Beverage Director Wow! What an awesome start to the season. We have seen some very busy days in the clubhouse the last couple of weeks and we would like to thank everyone for their support. Heading into April we are hoping to see the great weather continue. We will also extend the hours in the restaurant and bar. We will be opening at 10am on the week days, and staying open a little later on Sunday, the kitchen will close at 4 pm on Sunday. The bar will stay open until 7 pm on Sundays. As we get staffed up for the season we will be trying to get the shacks open as well. We will start opening them as soon as we have staff to fill the shifts needed. Thank you in advance for your patience while we hire new staff members. Easter is the first Sunday in April and we will be having our Easter Brunch in the clubhouse for 10 am until 2 pm. Reservations are highly recommended as we booked all available spots last year. Hope to see everyone there. Also as of now we have no big parties planned in the month April. If we have any last minute parties we will send out an to everyone. Let s get out and enjoy some beautiful s pring golf. Please remember to drink responsibly an d don t drink and drive. 6 News from the MAINTENANCE Sean Sullivan, CGCS Towards the end of March I began to transfer water from the lower pond to the upper pond. It took almost 3 million gallons of water to top off the pond. April 1st and 2nd, I will be hooking up and turning on the river pumps in order to top off the lower pond. In the days following that, I will turn on the irrigation system. Based on the prevailing weather, I will water as needed. Based on the current golf schedule, I have been allotted April 20th, 21, and 22 for aerating the course. Aerating is one of many necessary agronomic programs used on golf course. Please accept the fact that it is necessary and that the benefits of a successful aeration program help to ensure a successful growing/golfing season. Despite the rumors the grass always grows back! The recovery time, will be based on the weather at the time of aeration and the weather during the 2 weeks following. We hope for pe r- fect weather, 60 degrees, no wind and plenty of sunshine. Warm, windy and dry will extend the recovery time as the edges of the aeration holes get dried out and required longer period to regenerate growth. Wet and cloudy weather extends the time it takes to clean up after the aeration program. We will endeavor to do our best regardless of the weather. I am, respectively, asking everyone use the cart paths where we have them, fix your ball marks on the greens, and to rake your tracks while exiting the bunkers. Not using the cart paths around the green and tee complexes, will add to the compaction and grass failure. Putting through an unrepaired or improperly repaired ball mark on a green cut at.125" will track offline. Having to play out of someone's footprints and splash is upsetting. Knowing that a golfer couldn't/wouldn't spend the 5-10 seconds it takes to rake the disturbance makes it worst for those golfers following. Lastly, I have been selected to work on The Open Support Team at St. Andrews. As in 2012 and 2013, I will be the only American Superintendent to have that honor. Sean Sullivan, CGCS
