1 July 2018 Juniper Golf Course Redmond, Oregon Juniper Newsletter Summer s here! The Fourth of July was a blast! Once again, Juniper was in parade handing out otter pops to the thousands of parade viewers lining Redmond s street. Last year we gave out over 2,000 otter pops and it still wasn t enough to get one to all the hot thirsty kiddos along the parade route. This year, we gave out twice as many pops and had two carts in the parade! Later that evening, at Juniper s clubhouse we had the Redmond firework display that blasted off from the Fairgrounds next door. Kids played Frisbee and practiced on the putting greens. While the crowds enjoyed a BBQ with hamburgers and hot dogs coupled with snacks and drinks, the band Appaloosa, entertained and played until 9:00. This night had a double purpose: First, to have a fun safe relaxing firework watching experience, and second to raise funds for the Brightside Animal Shelter. Bob Kennedy and his family and friends donated $275 for the privilege of sitting in the Brightside VIP area to watch the fireworks display. Brightside brought in couches and lounges and coffee tables, to create an outdoor living room, where Bob and his guests had a front row view of the spectacular fireworks show. The staff at Juniper hosted a Longest Marshmallow Drive game, where the contestants paid $1 to see how far they could hit a marshmallow on the driving range. September 21st Luau! If you missed it last year, you missed out! The Luau is tremendous fun! The Menehune, an old Hawaiian sprite who is fondly known by islanders for his dancing and merriment, will once again greet guests at check in. Like the Menehune, the guests at the luau will enjoy music and dancing to the island beats of Mango Stew. They play a delightful mix of oldies, rock and roll and tropical rock that includes songs from the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett. Guests will also enjoy drinks from our Island -inspired drink list, like a Mai-Tai, Blue Hawaiian or the Maui Mama. Dinner that night will be a smorgasbord of island delights. Asian noodle salad and fresh Ahi poke, followed by traditional Hawaiian potato-mac salad, sticky rice, Dragon BBQ beef short ribs and a coconut lemon grass Mahi-Mahi. However, the Kalua Pig will be the highlight of the dinner! As true Hawaiian custom dictates, the night before the party we will dig a hole and light a fire. When the time is exactly right we lower the whole, 100lb. pig onto the coals and cover it with banana leaves and wet burlap, then we seal it all underground. Twelve hours later we dig up the pork and bring it, steaming to the table. Guests always line up to see the unveiling of the pig. Where we take off the cage that keeps the pig together, unwrap it from its flavorful banana leaf wrap, and unveil a perfectly cooked Kalua pig! Topping it off, there will be several Hawaiian inspired desserts.

2 The 4th Annual Block Party - August 18: Hundreds of Redmond s families will come out to enjoy: Face painting, bounce houses, a large slide, balloon animals and a free BBQ cooked by the Mayor himself. The free BBQ is made possible due to generous donations from; Hayden Homes and Summit Bank. At dusk, we will be showing the classic movie, The Peanuts Movie on a giant inflatable screen. Be sure to bring your beach chairs and blankets, and snuggle down with your family to watch this fun movie. Like last year we will be placing golf carts around the driving range and will be renting them out for $10 each. All proceeds for the cart rentals will go to a charity as yet to be determined. Band on the Patio: What a fun way to enjoy our beautiful patio during the hot summer months. Every Friday throughout this summer, we will host a different band on the patio, from 5:00-8:00pm. Our lineup this summer is a fun mix of rock, blues and jazz. Bring some friends down to Juniper and enjoy drinks, good food and great local music. Prime Rib Night: Ok, why haven t you been in here for this weekly amazing dinner? For $14.95 you get a 10oz portion of garlic/rosemary roasted prime rib, green salad, potato side, steamed vegetables, and one of Chef Jen s amazing desserts. For a little more, you can upgrade your steak to 16oz. This is the best meal in town! Please call ahead for reservations as we are frequently very busy

3 FROM THE PRO As we head into some of the longest, warmest days of the year, I want to make sure everyone is up to date on the events here at the club. Friday night couples league has been very successful so far this summer, and with changing formats every week, there is always new to come out and play. Also, our ladies clinic on Monday nights has had a larger turnout for the summer session than any of the ones we have done since Travis and I arrived here. If your game needs some work, or you know a beginner lady in your life who would enjoy some group session clinics with WINE, please see me, as we will be doing another six-week session in August and September. Finally, look for our junior camp to return this year in August, accommodating all skill levels of kids aged Information is now available in the golf shop. From the tournament side of things, we have already had larger-than-average field sizes for the Chapman and Central Oregon Scramble this year, and we look forward to more of the same for Man-Gal, the Juniper Best Ball, and Deer Widows. Reach out to your friends and family, and make it a goal to come spend a weekend with us playing some competitive, but still fun tournament golf. Entries for Man-Gal are out, and the other two will be out soon. Finally, I want to extend a thank you to the membership and their guests for helping us be the best we can here at Juniper. I ve had the privilege of playing with several different member groups recently and I am impressed and grateful at the efforts to share and improve. Consolidating golf carts within groups, improving pace of play when asked, and checking in with the golf shop prior to start time (even as members!) are all things that will help our efficiency as staff, as well as our club s reputation with prospective members. 4 Juniper Newsletter THE GENERAL MANAGER S DESK We have rounded the turn into the second half of the season. A friendly reminder there still a lot more golf to be played this year. In this newsletter, you will read more in James and Ahja s sections about the list of activities planned throughout which are plentiful. The club championship is right around the corner July 28 and 29. We would love to see everyone out to compete. Based on participation we will break down the field by divisions Open, Women, Men, Senior and alike. Finally, I state this every year as friendly safety reminder, when it becomes HOT ensure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Ensure you are drinking plenty of water days before you play. Hydration is a 3 day process before extreme conditioning environments. - Travis Kane, PGA We would like to congratulate one of our green crew staff members Zachary Herrmann. Zach participated in the 2018 Special Olympic USA Games here in Seattle a few weeks ago. Zach received the silver medal in golf. If you haven t met Zach yet on the course, make sure you do and congratulate him on his victory. Good golf begins with a good grip. Ben Hogan

5 MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT Spring in Central Oregon is slow to pass; we still have some frosty mornings. Pond liner was installed on May 30 and we started to fill with water that day. Our troubled greens had made some great improvements and are rolling true. We will start to see the turf grass respond to the warmer weather and we will increase our mowing frequency to maintain a great playing surface. We will still need the golfers help to maintain the great playing surface by fixing their BALL MARKS and filling their DIVOTS. We will be monitoring the greens for ball roll and speed daily. Our target speed will be maintained through the summer with mowing, rolling and topdressing of the greens. With the rocky soil and thin topsoil, we will start to see some dry spots forming on Fairways and Rough. In your travels it would be great if you did not drive the golf carts through these spots it puts added stress on the grass. - Chanaan Fasanello
