We have two tournaments left and the holidays are fast approaching. I would like to thank all of our members for participating in our tournaments and in our social events. But our big event is coming up in January. It is our Annual Dinner/ Dance. This event is not only needed to raise funds for our club, but it is also a chance to get together and visit with all our golfing friends and members. We also install our new officers, pass out awards and the coveted red jackets. So please plan to attend and bring your family and friends to this great event. On a sad note we recently lost a long time MAGA member, Dave Gonzales, who passed away last month. Dave was a past President and held just about every office with MAGA and was tournament director for many years. He was a Sacramento MAGA member for over 45 years. He will be sorely missed. We are now accepting nominations for all offices in our club. If you are interested please contact Rudy Hernandez, who is our election chairman. 2 October The Sand Trap Page 2 Tournament Director We are quickly coming to the end of our 2018 Golf year. We have two more tournaments left this year. October 20 th is our regular tournament, and for those that qualify, the Tournament of Champions. To qualify for the tournament of champions you must have won at least one tournament, low gross or low net during our chapter tournaments this year. Our last tournament is on November 17 th at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course. It is our Turkey Shoot where we play our 6,6,6 two person fun tournament. For those of you who have not played this format, it is 6 holes Scramble, 6 holes Best Ball, and 6 holes Alternate Shots. Our Club does not play in December or January due to the rains. The courses many times are not playable and with the Holidays our time is busy with family. Our first tournament of the year is the Valentine Tournament in February. I schedule Teal Bend Golf Course in February because it has good drainage and we have not had to cancel. Annual MAGA Familia BBQ and Golf We celebrated our second Golf and BBQ Family Tournament this year. Everyone seemed to have a great time. We had several non golfing family members attend. It gave us an opportunity to meet the spouses, family, and friends of our golfing buddies. I hope this tournament will continue to be supported and that it will grow bigger and better every year Club Championship This year we played three rounds of the Club Championship, the best two out of three were calculated. We had three men flights and a Ladies flight. We have 73 members in our club of which 22 are women. Next year if we have 16 or more Ladies playing at a tournament I will have 2 Ladies flights. I was not able to attend. Many of our chapter members attended and as reported many were very successful. Stephanie Hernandez was in attendance and will be reporting on the results. New or Renewal 2019 Memberships Start October 1, I will be scheduling the Tournaments for 2019 and hope to have it completed and the coupon books and schedules done by our November 17 th Turkey Shoot Tournament. We have several New Members signed up for our 2019 year. These new members will be allowed to play in our last two tournaments this year as regular members. I want to thank you all for allowing me to serve as your Tournament Director. You have made my job enjoyable. I have been very fortunate to have Reene Smith as Co-partner all these years. She has done the scoring in little time which has allowed me to present the prizes quickly. She has also taught Stephanie Hernandez to take her place when she is not available. Joyce Baral, our Treasurer, helps me by getting the funds needed for prizes and helping dispense them. Gracie Vasquez helps Reene and Stephanie with the scorecards. As you see, We Are A Team. 7 October The Sand Trap Page State Tournament TONY JOSE DIANA PATSY ART 2018 MAGA State Tournament September 1-2, 2018 Rancho Bernardo, G.C., San Diego, California Thirteen or more Sacramento MAGA members traveled to San Diego to play in the 2018 MAGA California State Tournament. Five of our members were State Tournament winners: Ladies Flight: Patsy Serviss -1st Low Net (142) & Diana Galvan - 2nd Low Net (143) Senior Flight: Art Gavia - Champ Low Gross (151) & Tony Romo - 2nd Low Gross (156) Super Senior Flight: Jose Mercado - 3rd Low Net (144) Many of our members also raked in some money winning Twos, Closest to the Pin, Money Hole and Net & Gross Skins. Our club has been slowly adding new members, and we hope to continue adding more members. Now that 2019 is upon us, it's time to think about our MAGA dues to function as a great golf club like we have in the past. So please renew your membership as soon as you can. You must pay your dues by December 30, 2018 in order to insure your membership with the NCGA for the coming year. I know some of you will forget so this is a gentle reminder. Your buddies are getting ready to tee it up next year. We are just waiting for you to join us. You can find the membership application in this issue and on our MAGA website. There will be applications available at our next two tournaments. If you know anyone who wants to join or they have questions, tell them to call or me. Don't forget to post your scores, especially during our two inactive playing months in December and January. We trust everyone knows they can post their scores at your local golf course using the NCGA computer normally located in the Pro Shop. Some members have reported some courses, e.g. Empire Ranch, have removed the NCGA computer and are instructing golfers to do it online or via their smart phone. You can always go to the NCGA web site and in the upper right hand corner of the home page is a link, LOGIN / POST SCORE. Click on it and log in using your NCGA number & last name to then post your score(s): If anyone is unable to post their scores or just wants me to do it for them, please call or me. 9 October The Sand Trap Page Officer Elections Nominations for the 2019 Officers & Board Members of the Mexican American Golf Association, Sacramento Chapter is open. Elections are held at the November General Meeting. Nominations of candidates are accepted in September, October, and November. Nominations can be made by any member in good standing, either to the committee or at any general membership meeting up to and including Election Day. In order to be eligible for office candidates must be in good standing and must have been members for one (1) year. With the exception of the treasurer, executive officers are elected for a term of one (1) year. If you are enjoying being a member of our Sacramento Chapter of this great golf association, consider running for an office. Help keep this chapter alive and active with fresh ideas. It is not all time consuming. There is a meeting once a month at either Vallejos Taqueria or La Rosa Blanca. Do you know of a member who you think would be a good Board Member or Executive Member, let one of the Election Committee members know. Is there a member who has just retired and is looking for something to get involved with. What better than a golf club. Another of our golfers has passed away. David Gonzales, a great friend and golfer will be missed. On behalf of the members flowers were sent to his funeral services and Sympathy cards were sent to David R Gonzales and Family, Dicky Gonzales and Family, Richard Gonzales and Family and to Esther Franco. Stephanie Hernandez, take care of yourself. You got hurt again playing golf. Mickie Hernandez pulled a hamstring playing golf. She has had to use a walker to get around. Girls keep healing and you ll be playing golf again. Sonny Rose we miss you. We hope you are mending well and ready to play golf. Helen Zaragoza has had heart surgery and is in the process of healing. We wish you a speedy recovery. Linda Garcia keep healthy and best wishes on your recovery from your surgery. If I have left anyone out, please let me know. Usually I get news of anyone being sick or having surgery at our monthly meetings. That process, not the end result, enriches life. In golf working hard does not guarantee success. It can even make things worse. Doing the wrong things in practice can ruin your golfing mind. To improve, you must practice. But the quality of your practice is more important than the quantity. The foundation of consistency is a sound pre-shot routine. Golfing potential depends primarily on a player s attitude, on how well he plays with the wedges and the putter, and on how well he thinks. Everything that happens from the tee to that 120-yard range is almost insignificant compared with what happens thereafter.
