6 6 Note From the Pro It is time to brush off the cob webs and gear up for the new golf season. We are happy to offer a variety of events, instruction and equipment to get you back into the swing of things at Coosaw Creek. Our first tournament of the new golf season is the Super Bowl Shoot-Out which uses a modified stableford system featuring football style points and Superbowl Raffle for a TV and other prizes. The tournament will take place on February 3rd. Be sure to sign up; you may do so individually, or as a team. Golf members can pick up their 2013 Tournament Book or view it online on the Members Only page of our website. The book will contain information on all of this year s tournaments, as well as notes from the various member committees that are working to improve your golfing experience at Coosaw. Our new GHIN Handicap and Tournament system is up and running. If you don t know your GHIN number already please be sure to check the Handicap Roster next to the Posting Station outside the Pro Shop. Your GHIN Number will allow you to post scores at over 11,000 golf courses in the US, as well as post your scores from home, or on your mobile phone. If you have any questions feel free to come by the Pro Shop, and ask myself or Madison. In addition to this if you have any other issues, or scores that need to be edited please contact me at golfshop@coosawcreek.com, or just come on by! We will be offering many golf clinics and camps in the upcoming season for golfers of all ages and abilities. Please see the Course News section for more info on upcoming learning opportunities. See you on the links, Kristian Barker, Golf Professional/Golf Shop Manager Madison s Instructional Corner The weather is improving and everyone is starting to come back out to the course. Your swing might be a little rusty so here is a good way to assess the state of your game and identify where you could improve for the new year. The best way to improve your golf game is to really know the ins and out of your own swing. Do you know how far you hit each club, what your tendencies are, what distracts you on the course? To improve your golf game, you must know yourself and your game to a greater degree. The best way to accomplish and asses your own game is to rate each part of your game: driving, chipping, pitching, bunkers, short irons, long irons/ hybrids, fairway woods, ext and rate from 1 to 10 (10 being excellent, 1 being poor). Improving on the areas your rate the lowest will be the best place to focus your practice. Knowing what you can and can t do out on the course is one of the best ways to help lower your score so take some time and assess your game today. There is always room for improvement. Charleston Area Men s Interclub Association The Interclub, formed in 1992 is made up of thirteen teams, each representing a local golf club. They play a thirteen match schedule each year. Each team must have a minimum of eight players and a maximum of ten per match. They play a modified Stableford format and points are allocated to the team based on their finish in each match. The team with the most points accumulated throughout the year is the champion for that year. Coosaw Creek has won the trophy twice. To be eligible to play on the Coosaw team, you must maintain a USGA handicap at Coosaw. A signup sheet is posted near the handicap computer. The first ten players to sign up and pay their entry fee of $32 will be chosen for the team with a couple of exceptions. Because new players will be limited in scoring in their first match, no more than two new players will be picked for a particular match in order not to adversely affect the team s chances. In addition, the final match of the year, which is played at Rivertowne may, at the Interclub s Director s discretion, be limited to existing team players only. Full details on the Interclub s history, by-laws, rules and results can be found on their website at chsinterclub.org.

9 9 Practice Range Please note: The driving range will close at 4:30pm on Sundays & Thursdays and open at 8:30am on Mondays and Fridays to accommodate weekly maintenance. AND THE AWARD GOES TO... During the winter, the range will be mats only during the week. The grass tee will be used on weekends, weather permitting. This will help maintain the quality of the turf during the slower growing season. Also, we would like to remind our members that range balls and bags are NOT to be removed from the driving range. If you have any bags or balls in your cars, golf carts, or garage, we ask that you please return them to the driving range so we can keep them in circulation for the enjoyment of all members and guests. Thanks! At the Men s Blitz luncheon last month, the Williams Trophy for 2012 was awarded to Jay Tavormina by Rick Slagle and Steve Windich. This is an annual award presented to the player with the best average score for the year. Congratulations goes out to Jay for a great year of golf! 10 Gordon s Corner Topic: Divot Patterns Difference Between Proper and Improper Divot Patterns 10 Here is a topic I have been wanting to discuss for a while. Even though we have expanded the tee surface over the years by 50%, we still struggle at times to re-grow turf before the tees are rotated back to a particular spot. Our greatest struggle is in the winter when cold weather prevents turf growth. However, golfers can also have a negative or positive impact on turf re-growth simply by the manner in which they practice. The best way each member can help this situation is by creating a small footprint when it comes to range use. What do I mean? As you are practicing on the range, try to take divots in as tight a pattern as possible. The best way to keep from using too much turf during practice is by placing the ball you are about to hit, directly behind the previous divot that was made. This way, a large part of our next divot will be taken in the same space as the previous divot and greatly reduce the amount of turf that is impacted during your shot. I took a photo of these two very different stalls recently on the range to show the difference. One golfer consumed about 6 square feet while the other consumed about 2 square feet of turf. Bottom-line is if everyone hit balls on the range so that their divot pattern took up as little turf as possible, we would have better and more mature turf on the range year round. The first photo is the proper divot pattern, the second photo is not. Please help us by trying to make your divot pattern on the range look like the first one. 16 16 POOL ACCESS CARDS NOW AVAILABLE The Club has now completed the project of providing a state-of-the-art security/access system for the pool area. The project included replacement of the three old dilapidated wood gates with sturdy attractive aluminum gates, electronic access control boxes and proximity card readers. The new system will provide the club with: - A device to allow only dues-paying members access to the pool. - Adequate security to ensure compliance with DHEC requirements. - The ability to limit access to younger children as required by insurance underwriters. - Report generating information to track pool usage. Currently the two gates leading from the playground to the pool and from the clubhouse to the pool are fully operational. To gain entry to the pool through these two gates members must be in possession of a proximity card. The main gate to the pool is currently on a timer which is set to disengage the security system and allow entry during a specific time. This will remain in effect until the new proximity cards are distributed at which time the main gate will also be set to only open with the use of a card. Exiting the pool only requires the patron to press an exit button located at all three gates. This disengages the gate for a short period of time to allow exiting. Members in good standing may NOW pick up their proximity cards at the Administrative Office. Hours for distribution are Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm. Each family will be issued ONE proximity card. This card will be Member-specific. Cards are not to be shared with others. info@coosawcreek.com
