6 6 Note from the Pro By the time this newsletter reaches you, we will have crowned our new mens and ladies Club Champions. However, the golf season is not over yet, as the Club Championship was the final event to qualify for Player of the Year Tournament. Now that the points are final, we will be accepting sign-ups for the top 50 men and top 25 women to fill the field. This new event will play out similarly to the PGA Tour Fed Ex Cup race and should be fun and exciting, so I encourage everyone who qualifies to keep October 17 & 18 open to play. And, don t forget about the Club s Open House on October 1st and 2nd. We will have a demo day on both days and club trade-in, as well as a special 2-day membership drive. This event is designed to promote our facility to the community, with the goal of creating long-term customers and recruiting members. It will be a busy weekend at Coosaw Creek, so please plan accordingly if you plan to play golf or use the Clubhouse, and help us make this event a success. The Clinic will last approximately 1 HOUR and will include on course play with an instructor. And parents, we also encourage you to stay and participate in the clinic as well. Please contact the pro shop for any questions or to sign-up Family Tees (Tee it Forward Initiative) The PGA has implemented the Tee it Forward initiative to help golfers enjoy the game as well as to grow the game in an attempt to attract new junior golfers, families and beginning golfers to the game of golf. There is a flyer located at the handicap computer to help golfers identify which tees they should play. Most people already know that we have 3 sets of tees (blue, white and green), but many are unaware that we also offer 3 blended tee options (blue/ white, green/white and green/gold) for golfers to play, as well. Scorecards are available in the proshop to provide tee and handicap information. We have also re-implemented family tees throughout the course. You will see these markers (Gold and Red) located in the fairway to provide adequate starting points for juniors and beginners, as well as for families to come out and play together. During Twilight Play (after 3pm), we will also allow juniors under the age of 16 to play for FREE when accompanied by a paying adult. Family tee scorecards are also available in the proshop.

Peggy Beale, Aubrey Bell, Lew Briggs, Jeff Hemphill, Bob Potter, Dick Shaw, Judy Whaley, Rusty Woodall, Mike Benner GM/Dir. of Golf Greenside with Gordon Course Conditions and Overseeding It has been another year of extreme weather conditions. We experienced near drought conditions throughout the summer which resulted in a rain deficit of inches. Now it seems that we have been fighting very wet conditions due to frequent mid-day down pours. These extreme conditions have proven to be very stressful to our Bermuda based grasses on the golf course, as well as for the staff in trying to maintain optimum course conditions and turf health through adverse weather conditions. However, we are very happy with the overall turf quality as we start to head into the fall season. Earlier in the year, we had an independent course survey conducted by IGM (International Golf Maintenance) to help us evaluate overall turf health and improvement needs, as well as recommend new or different agronomic practices that may have a positive impact on the course. One overwhelming point that was identified in the survey was the positive impact that not overseeding has had on the turf health and condition of our fairways, as well as the green on hole #11 and the putting green. As many will remember, those two greens were routinely showing the worst health each year. But, since we have skipped overseeding and removed some trees that were not allowing adequate sun, those greens have responded very well. Due to that point, IGM recommended in their survey that we skip overseeding on all greens in an effort to improve the turf health and playing condition of the greens and to help prolong the life of our existing turf on the greens. Our greens are now approaching 20 years old. While most courses have resurfaced their greens to newer ultra dwarf turfs, we are still maintaining the original tif-dwarf greens used when the course was built in With that said, we have made the decision to not overseed the greens and fairways this year. This will be the first time that the greens will not be overseeded since they were built. We still plan to overseed all tee s and the practice range. We will also be using a new chemical application (Chloro Green) on the greens throughout the winter that allows the dormant grass to keep its green color. This spray pigment is not a paint and does not cause any stress to the grass plant. We have already made two applications to the greens so that the pigment can be absorbed into the grass before they go dormant this fall. We will also make additional applications every month after they go dormant to keep the green color throughout the winter season. So, hopefully they will look and play just like they would normally, but we can also give thegreens a much needed break from overseeding for the first time. Please contact me if you have any questions about this or anything else on the course.
