8 8 Greenside with Gordon Winter Course Conditions As we head into the winter months there are a few things to be aware of on the golf course that may look different from years past. As we head into the dormant season, we would like to provide some insight and information as to how the course will look and play, as well as the reason why we are implementing some new agronomical programs. Greens - Early in 2011 we had an independent Golf Course Management Company (IGM) evaluate course conditions and make recommendations for improved course upkeep. While the overall grade of the course was very high, they did have some recommendations that we have decided to implement. One was to skip overseeding of our greens for the off-season. Instead, we will apply Forsome pigment to the greens. This pigment will help maintain the green color in the grass blade during the dormant season. Overseeding on golf courses is typically performed to enhance esthetics, providing a temporary green grass playing surface during the dormant period for the Bermuda base grass. Some courses will dye their greens with artificial color to provide a green surface. The pigment that we are utilizing keeps the grass blade itself green. This year will be the first winter that we have not overseeded greens complexes on the golf course. This will provide a much needed break for the greens. Due to the age of our greens and constant overseeding, the Bermuda base tiff dwarf grass has progressively slowed in transition. This transition period applies stress to the plant, which weakens the root system each year. By skipping overseeding, we expect to see a stronger plant root in the spring season and a healthier, fuller coverage of the Bermuda grass. We do not have to look far to see an example of this improvement as we have experimented with not overseeding the greens complexes of hole #11 and the putting green over the past 2 years. Prior to skipping overseeding, these two greens were the weakest on property. We have now consistently seen a nimprovement of the quality and health of the turf on these greens due to skipping the overseeding process. There are a couple things to keep in mind when playing on dormant greens: Ball marks will stand out more. So, please help repair them when you see them. The greens will putt faster than non-overseeded greens, so remember to take that into account when reading putts, especially when putting downhill. Pin positions will be rotated less frequently. Green speed, player traffic and weather will dictate how frequently we will be able to locate new holes on the course. Please bare with us as we try to protect the greens condition through the winter. Tees Due to the high concentration of divots and volume of shots made from our tee boxes, all tee areas on the golf course have been overseeded with Rye grass. This will help cover divots throughout the off-season and provide an esthetically pleasing teeing area for our golfers. The tee boxes will appear greener in color for the winter than the fairways and rough which is to be expected. We will see green grass on the tee boxes especially during colder temperatures as the Rye grass grows and the Bermuda base goes dormant.

9 9 Greenside with Gordon Fairways All fairways have not been overseeded this off-season, which is a continuation of our current practice over the past two years. Not overseeding fairways has proven to enhance turf health and condition of the fairways during the growing season, as evident over the past two summers. Fairways can be harder to maintain than greens and tees due to the gumbo based soil that the fairway turf lies on, which keeps the root system shallow. The sand based soil found in the greens complexes is more conducive to growing deep roots. In preparation for the dormant season, the fairway heights were raised from ½ to ¾, to provide a thicker base on the fairways, which is the highest height recommended by the USGA. When Bermuda grass is mowed higher than ¾, the golf ball will tend to sit down into the grass, rather than sit up on the grass. As a comparison, our roughs are mowed at a height of 1 ¼ and we know what kind of lies you can find in our rough. We have heard some comments that areas of the fairways appear to be mowed shorter than ¾, but this is caused by two things: First is dormancy. When the Bermuda grass plant is not growing, the grass blades tend to lay down, rather than stand up as they typically would during warm weather growing periods. This laying down makes the fairway appear to be mown shorter. Second is compaction. Golf car, foot and machine traffic will mat down the grass blades. Without warm weather, the Bermuda grass does not grow or will not be able to stand back up, causing the appearance of being closely mown. Compaction is more evident in the high traffic areas of the golf course, such as cart entry and natural path areas between mounds. Remember that divots will be more visible on dormant turf, as well. Please help refill divots with sand whenever possible. We hope that these changes will result in marked improvement in future course conditions. As usual, we look forward to your comments regarding playability of the course. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Gordon Williams, Golf Course Superintendant
