6 6 Note From the Pro Spring is just about here, and the days are getting warmer and longer. It s time to hit the links and play. The first major tournament is later this month: The Men s/women s Round Robin Tournament. It s also time to start thinking about the 2013 Member Guest Golf Tournament. The format will be a 2 player team best ball. This event is the premier golf event for. As a member you will be proud to participate in this event and we know your guest will have a great time. Please mark your calendar for Friday, June 7th Sunday, June 9th. Friday will include practice rounds, a putting contest, and dinner. A full weekend of golf and festivities follows (on the 8th and 9th) that will no doubt be fun for all who participate! I would like to take a minute to personally thank all of the participants who played in the Super Bowl Shoot-Out on February 3rd. We had 72 players with two large flights. The weather was a little breezy, but we had a great turn-out and a great day of golf. It was fun day here at! Play well! Kristian Barker, Golf Professional/Golf Shop Manager Monday Junior Clinics Junior Clinics are back starting Monday, March 11th. The clinics will be held at 4:30 pm on Mondays and are available for all juniors from ages 6 to 15. The Clinic will last approximately 45 minutes and will include on course play with an instructor. And parents, we also encourage you to stay and participate in the clinic as well. Cost will be free for any golf members and $5 for any non members. Madison s Instructional Corner So have you ever wondered why you might have trouble scoring? Well most amateur golfers have trouble inside 100 yards and getting the ball close enough to the hole to make birdies or even save pars. Here are three shots to try and improve on to help you inside 100 yards; short irons, pitching, and chipping. With your short iron shots try only using a three- quarter swing. You are able to control the distance and direction of your shot by hitting a three-quarter shot then a full maxed out swing. The common mistake people make though once they start shorting their swing is they get lazy; you still need to make a good shoulder turn and turn back smoothly through the ball. Now we are not always going to hit the green so our chipping and pitching must be fine tuned to help save ourselves from those high numbers. With chip shots you want to rock your shoulders back and through just as if you were putting, and the big key is keeping your wrists firm through the shot. You want to set up with a slightly narrow and open stance, with more weight on your left side so your head and hands are closer to the target. So what if you have a bunker or big hill in front of you, you might need to pitch the ball up in the air. To do this set up with the ball just forward of center, then grip your wedge with the face open and align your body left of the target to compensate for the open club face. You will want to swing across your feet line to cut across the ball and the harder you swing the higher and softer the shot will be. So try improving in these areas and you might see a few strokes come off your score and be able to turn those bogeys into pars. Please sign-up at the golf shop or contact us with any questions.

Anyone not in the hole in one club who makes an ace will be responsible for their own bar tab. All members who were in the hole in one club last year will be automatically added to the list. Please let us know if you would like to be removed or added to the hole in one club. Also, we will provide any member who makes a hole in one with a $250 gift certificate, courtesy of our Bollinger Insurance Policy through the club. Golf Course Etiquette Reminders 1. Pace of Play Our Club pace of play goal is a 4 hour round of golf. Our pace of play policy is as stated The expected pace of play at is 4 hours and 15 minutes. All play starting before 10am on weekends and holidays is expected to maintain this pace of play. A group out of position will be notified that they are out of position. If that group fails to regain their position on the course, the group will be directed to skip forward to regain their position. Any groups who fail to finish their round of golf within the expected pace of play will not be permitted to play in the members only tee-time block on weekends and holidays. We also know that it is unreasonable to expect during peak times (such as weekend mornings and in tournaments rounds) to play in less than four hours. If you are looking to play in less time, we recommend playing during our non-peak tee-times between 7am 7:45am or late afternoons (after 2pm) when the course tends to have less play. To help ensure that your group meets our pace of play expectations, please make sure that you follow a few of these ready golf tips: Be ready to hit your shot when it is your turn, without delay. Prepare for your shot while your playing partners are playing their shots. Proceed to your ball (whenever possible) with multiple clubs that may be needed, while your partners are hitting their shots. Move quickly in between shots. The 1st person ready to play should hit first on the tee, instead of following the traditional honor system. Exit the hole quickly upon completion of play and mark your score down when you arrive at the next tee, instead of at the last green. By following these simple tips you can shave valuable time from your round of golf and positively impact the pace of play of the entire golf course. Also, please remember that tournament rounds typically take longer to play. If you are expecting to complete a round of golf in a tournament in less than 4 hours, you may not want to participate in the tournament. 2. On Course Restrooms - The Club has recently received several complaints from residents in regards to golfers failing to use the restrooms provided on the golf course. As a reminder, there are restrooms located on the front nine in between holes #4 and #5 and on the back nine in between holes #13 and #14, as well as at the Clubhouse when your group is making the turn. Please be respectful of your fellow golfers, as well as the community members who reside along the course by utilizing the restroom facilities that are provided.
10 Gordon s Corner Topic: Water Flow and Drainage 10 With the recent, heavy rains that we have experienced, many of you have seen standing water above or near course drains. This may have led you to the conclusion that the drains may be clogged or not draining properly. In fact, the course is frequently accused of causing drainage issues and standing water on home owner s properties. But in most instances, the course drains are working as expected. There are times that debris collects on the drain lids which will slow the flow of water, but it rarely causes a complete blockage. With the month of February being one of the wettest on record (over 10 inches by the time this was written) the likely cause of standing water is our reliance on the natural water flow through the community drains and wetlands. The drain lines for both the community and the golf course are interconnected. And, property drains are almost entirely reliant on the natural flow of water through our wetlands. The water flow occurs from the wetlands located across Patriots Blvd. (in Wescott Subdivision), then down through the wetlands located across the street from the left side of hole #16, then behind #17 green to the left side of hole #18, then under Club Course Drive to the pond and wetlands on the right side of hole #10 and then off our property behind #11 tee. As you can see, there are many areas for water to build up and slow down. Unfortunately, when we receive the volume of rain that we saw this past month, the entire system backs up and the water has nowhere to flow until the wetlands subside enough to allow the water trapped in the drain lines to once again flow through. It normally takes a few hours for this process to occur. But when rain fall is heavy, there will be more water flowing onto Coosaw property and the process will take even longer. Some have suggested removing drain lids before it rains to help increase the flow of water through the grates. However, we would then run the risk the of allowing debris to get into the drain lines and the potential of a serious blockage that would cause us to have to dig up and replace drain lines at an extremely high expense to the Club and community. So, keep in mind that flow of water through the property is dependent on many factors. And the drainage pace depends on the volume of rainfall and capacity of our drains, ponds and wetlands. 15 15 POOL ACCESS CARDS GO ACTIVE APRIL 1ST The Club has now completed the project of providing a state-of-the-art security/access system for the pool area. The project included replacement of the three old dilapidated wood gates with sturdy attractive aluminum gates, electronic access control boxes and proximity card readers. The new system will provide the club with: - A device to allow only dues-paying members access to the pool. - Adequate security to ensure compliance with DHEC requirements. - The ability to limit access to younger children as required by insurance underwriters. - Report generating information to track pool usage. Currently the two gates leading from the playground to the pool and from the clubhouse to the pool are fully operational. To gain entry to the pool through these two gates members must be in possession of a proximity card. The main gate to the pool is currently on a timer which is set to disengage the security system and allow entry during a specific time. This will remain in effect until the new proximity cards are distributed at which time the main gate will also be set to only open with the use of a card. Exiting the pool only requires the patron to press an exit button located at all three gates. This disengages the gate for a short period of time to allow exiting. Members in good standing may NOW pick up their proximity cards at the Administrative Office. Hours for distribution are Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm. Each family will be issued ONE proximity card. This card will be Member-specific. Cards are not to be shared with others. info@coosawcreek.com
