SEPTEMBER PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Doreen Lewallen As we head into the last few weeks of summer I hope that the hotter temperatures are over and we gradually welcome cooler days ahead. I already have experienced some cooler mornings when teeing off around 8:00 am. Well, the wait and suspense is over I would like to introduce our new Alta Sierra Head Golf Professional, Brian Glosser who started on September 1. Brian held various positions at Berkley Country Club, Rancho Solano, Round Hill Country Club, Winchester Country Club, Northstar at Tahoe and Auburn Valley. Brian was also a Director of Instruction at the PGA Learning Center at Callippe Preserve Golf Course. He and his family will be relocating from Fairfield and are very excited to be moving to the foothills since they have family in Grass Valley and Nevada City. At least now he will have a shorter commute to work. Recently, Brian had spent a few days in the Pro Shop with Kacey to meet the staff, become familiar with our Pro Shop processes, and he even had a chance to play some golf. Again I want to thank the BOD selection committee for providing their time for the last 3 months going through the interviewing and selecting process. We believe that Brian will fit right in and has many ideas for increasing membership, public play and attracting additional outside tournaments. When you get a chance, stop by the Pro Shop, say hello and introduce yourself. Kacey has written his final article for the Green Gazette. We wish him and his family well on their new endeavors as they relocate from California to Austin Texas. On August 29 th Alta Sierra in conjunction with ASPOA held a Thank a Firefighter event. Many of our station 89 fire fighters attended and a great turnout from members and the community were there to say thank you" for all they do for the community. It is great to have the firehouse so close by for any emergencies that could come up. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful taco buffet that was prepared by Chef David and his staff (see pictures attached). Last month I wrote about searching around the club for areas that need some TLC. Here is one area that many members and those who attended outside events experienced, due to the uncomfortable high temperatures in July and August, that affected the climate in the restaurant and bar for several days straight. We continue to do our best to keep up with the repairs on the existing air conditioning system in these areas. The system is tired, worn out and once fixed is only running at 50% or less compasity at this time. In the last month the BOD has received cost proposals to purchase a new air conditioning system for these areas and hope to have the money available so the work can be completed before year-end. The BOD is currently preparing some ideas and ways on how this will be accomplished and will inform the membership when ready. September Coming Events: The annual Chief Tournament, chaired this year by Edda Howe, is scheduled for Saturday, September 22 nd. (see flyer attached) If you have any items to donate whether it is dry goods, wine, baking goodies, gift certificates etc. please let Edda know. We will be posting flyers and signup sheets with all the information and a tee sponsor board after Labor Day. This year donations will go directly to support the AC system for the restaurant and bar areas. Last year was a success and we hope this year is even bigger. Plan on supporting your wonderful club in the foothills. A Winemaker s Dinner event is scheduled for Thursday September 6 th (flyer attached). Space is limited for this special event so sign up now. There will be a wine buying opportunity of 25% off featured wines that evening. Bingo will be on Wednesday, September 19 th. October will be the last Bingo event for the year. So if you have not attended at least one, this is your opportunity before the year ends. Friday Dinners will be September 7, 14, 21 and the 28th. Chef David is always trying new ideas for Friday Dinners, like a Prime Rib Dinner, with a carving station that was held on 8/31. Each week, he will be introducing a Friday dinner special along with the main dinner menu and is welcoming back a soup and salad bar. Remember that these Friday Dinners are what the members have been asking for and can only continue with your support. Put one of these Friday dinner dates on your calendar now. Football season is upon us. The first Monday Night Football will be September 17 th. Continuing throughout the month of September is Taco Tuesday & Karaoke, and Daily Happy Hour. Coming soon to Timbers Bar & Grill is Saturday Pizza and Salad for a special price. Please remember that Chef David is trying his very best, introducing new ideas and special meals for us. Some work out better than others. Let s support him by participating in one or more of these weekly events. Bring a friend to these special fun events held at Timbers Bar & Grill.

Course Closed for September Maintenance: Tuesday, the 4 th - Thursday the 6 th. Friday there will be an 11:30 Shotgun. The Shop and Range will be closed on the 4 th and opened on the 5 th and 6th from 8 till 4. The House Committee chair has compiled a to do list" for a little TLC around the clubhouse and many members have volunteered their time to help out. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for October 17 th and 18th. Sign up sheets will be available in September. Now we just hope it does not rain Friendly Tidbit Reminders: Obey the stacked cart signs on the golf course that are located below the greens. There are to many carts driving and parking beyond these signs. Also please park your carts and walk to the tee boxes from the cart path to avoid heavy cart traffic on the grassy areas surrounding some tee boxes. Especially on Holes 1, 6, 7, 9, 14, 16, and 18. The golf course will be closed on Sunday, September 9 th, 16 th & Saturday the 22nd due to outside tournament events. Please plan accordingly if you are playing on these days. September is the last month to participate in Divot Patrol until next year. Check with the Pro Shop if you would like to volunteer your time. Thank you to everyone for supporting this special task every year. We all appreciate your efforts every Tuesday morning. The pool will be closed on Saturday, September 15 th from 4:00 till 5:00 for a wedding event held at the wedding site. So please plan your day accordingly. Check out Alta Sierra s Facebook page for events, posts and more. Chef David continues to create live videos to share with everyone. David and Sami were recently live on Good Day Sacramento preparing and sharing some delicious recipes available at Alta Sierra. Our Alta Sierra listing keeps on growing. If you know of anyone that would like to receive Alta Sierra blast announcements, please send their addresses to danddlew@suddenlink.net I would be glad to add them to the ASCC listing. The BOD values and appreciates all your issues, concerns and ideas that you bring to our attention to help us in managing the club. Some of these issues can be addressed immediately and others may need additional time for further discussion. Please remember that on the third Tuesday of every month after 9:30am the membership is welcomed to bring their issues, concerns and ideas to the board. Happy Golfing and Good Eats! I leave you with the following golf cartoon for September:

THE GOLF SHOP Kacey Tyler Well the time has finally come for me to say goodbye. I know we had a great party in June because we thought this was going to happen a lot faster than it did. However, things worked out for the best I was able to stay and keep the shop going until we hired Brian Glosser the new Head Professional. I hope all of you will welcome him with open arms and be as helpful to him as you were to me for my time here. Brian comes to us from Berkeley CC and has been in the business for about 17 years. He has spent time at Auburn Valley, North Star, Winchester, Rancho Solano and other various golf courses so he has a good feel for different types of courses. By the time, you read this I will already be in Texas but my heart will always be here at Alta Sierra CC. I love the people because they love life itself and I know I can always return to open arms and hearts. Thank you all for a wonderful 16 years of friendship. Now for one last time just don t hit it there. HAPPENINGS AT ALTA SIERRA CC SEPTEMBER 3 RD LABOR DAY TOURNAMENT 8:30N SHOTGUN SEPTEMBER 4,5 WORK PARTY 9:00 TIL? 6 Help Support Your Club! Sign up Now for the 2018 Chief Tournament This year s tournament is scheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2018 For many years, this tournament has been for the benefit of the club by raising funds to help pay for various projects. One of our big expenses this year will be the much-needed replacement of the air conditioning system for the Restaurant & Bar areas. Estimated cost $45,000. Check-in will begin at 8:00 AM. Scones and coffee will be served for breakfast, and then enjoy a Texas BBQ Buffett after golf. The price is $60.00 per person. Member Guests and Non-Members are also welcome to participate. (guest or non-member golf cart add $15) This is a time to have fun with other members and to get together for a game of golf, enjoy a delicious meal and make a financial contribution to our club. Putting and chipping contests are available before golf. The game of the day will be a scramble format for a 10:00 Shotgun. Tickets will be available to purchase for the Raffle and Silent Auction which is planned after golf. Signup sheets for golf and sponsoring holes are located outside the Pro Shop. If you cannot play, please consider sponsoring a hole or two. Also, please consider in donating items to be placed in the Raffle and Silent Auction to make this a successful event. 10 RECIPE OF THE MONTH KEY LIME PIE Hello Members, I would like to tell you a little bit about me, most of you don't really know me that well. I was born in San Jose Ca, my father was a tank Commander in the Marines and my mother was a well season manager that ran kitchens. I come from a military family, my grandfather was a Colonel in the Army and my Grandmother was a lieutenant in the Army on my mother s side. My Dad's side my grandfather was a lieutenant in the Army and my grandmother was a stay at home mom. My dad's dad was a school teacher at Los Gatos High school for 30 years. My dad's mother was one amazing cook and she could make anything. We had a garden that took up half our backyard with lemon, plum and orange trees. On my dad's side my grandmother died when I was only 10 from brain cancer, I will never forget holding her hand before she died. She was a huge influence on why I became a chef. On my mom's side both parents died when I was in my teens. I had a rough childhood with so much family moving on to the next life. My father died in 2007 from agent orange. I took care of him the last year of his life. We used to BBQ together, it was our tradition that I truly miss. This recipe is one of my grandmother s that I tweaked a little. It is truly a delicious pie. COOL, DATE, LABEL, COVER *CRITICAL POINTS DO NOT OVER BAKE As for the Club, we are making progress, but we need to step out of our comfort zone to make the money we need to stay afloat. We are finding our way and it s getting better every day. When it comes to me, I want everyone to know they can talk to me about anything and I will always explain why I do what I am doing. We need every dollar from every aspect of the country club. We are not just a restaurant, we are a club on 74 acres of beautiful views.

GREEN SCENE Sean O Brien Wow, what a beautiful end of August we ve had. High temps in the 80s, lows in the 50s, just what the Dr. ordered after a month and a half of 90+ degree weather. It appears the smoke is also finally dwindling down in our area as well. I made a quick trip over to Elko, NV and I never did see any blue sky. True it was only a one day venture, but still drove across the entire state and it was all socked in with smoke from Washington, Oregon and even Canada fires. FYI, we won t be performing our extensive green and tee aerification this fall, so when the course opens again on Friday, you won t have to deal with sand and long grass for a couple of weeks as in the past. Our plans for the closure is to spike the greens a couple of times, verticut two directions and then double cut to get them all smoothed out for the return of play. They will also be fertilized. Now when it comes time to punch the fairways, then that process will be carried out as usual in late September and early October. Just a reminder given the cooler temps we have been experiencing lately. I got in my truck the other day and low and behold I was warned that all 4 of my tires were low in pressure. Not a lot, about 3 or 4 pounds each, but that is enough to affect mileage a little bit, so I went ahead and topped them off. Now this didn t happen because I was unfortunate enough to drive through a bunch of spilled nails on the highway. It was simply a matter of the temperatures dropping about 15 degrees. Cooler air is denser than warmer air so the air in my tires wasn t taking up as much space as before therefore the pressure drop. So why am I telling you all this? Well I ve found over the years one of the most neglected aspects of owning your own golf cart is tire maintenance. We ve rescued more people because of this than any other reasons combined. While the tires may look pressurized, there may be no more than 5-10 lbs holding them up instead of the normal 20. The cooler temps may just put them over the edge to where they might roll of the rim right in the middle of your round a mile or so from any help. So, I say to you check your tire pressures or if you would like, swing on down to the shop and have us do it for you. Better have us do it there, then have to drive out and rescue you later. As for the Nature Pic of the Month, just a gentle reminder of what is just around the corner as the smoke and haze clear, the air is fresh and clean again thanks to a fall rain or two and the splendor of the changing seasons excites the senses. Enjoy it for all it is worth because it doesn t last long before the dark grayness of Winter will again take over.

WOMEN S GOLF CLUB Liz Coots August will be known as the month of smoke and heat!!!! Aside from the games listed below we have been playing a 3-day Match Play that is taking up most of the month. I will just say that we were very evenly matched..on the first day several opponents needed to play 19+ holes to finish their competition. I will keep you in suspense and let you know the winners next month! This is quite an improvement from when we had 2 or 3 playing sometimes. It has been a lot of fun playing and socializing at lunch. last hole (a par 3) she drove past the green, chipped on about a foot from the hole and sank the putt! Way to go Lily!! I wanted to share with you some information on the 28 th Annual Corena Green Tournament for Junior Girls that was held on Tuesday August 7, 2018 at the beautiful Contra Costa Golf Club in Pleasant Hills. This 9-hole tournament is sponsored by the Women s Nine Hole Golf Association of Northern California. Once again, Lily Tamo represented Alta Sierra Country Club. This is her 3 rd year playing and 2 nd year representing ASCC. Lily had a great time, she got stuck in a few rough patches but persevered and really had a nice time with the girls she played with. A giant limb (really, this limb was bigger than most trees!) from a eucalyptus tree fell right in front of us, and we all had to run to escape injury. On her. Lily is on the far right!

AROUND THE CLUB Jan Core Have you noticed the beautifully decorated fireplace and the wedding decorations in the foyer? Many thanks go out to Judy Wilde for talent in design in both of these areas. Also, thanks go to Robin O Harrow, that new smiling face in the office, for her willingness to help me shop for the foyer and add her expertise for the foyer design and then let Judy display her flair.

Men s Association By: Mike Quinn 4-Club 4-Man Scramble Our seventh Gold Rush Series Tournament was a 4-man scramble with each player using only 3 clubs and a putter. The four-man team handicaps were calculated at 20% of the total of the four player s handicaps. It s always interesting how well the guys seem to play using only four clubs. It makes you think about what you should be working on to improve your game and what may be a waste of time (and/or money).
