2 NOTES FROM THE BOARD Carl Koring, President It is nice to be moving from the hot summer weather into cooler fall weather. We have some beautiful autumn color that is just starting to show itself on the golf course. Sign up for the Chief Tournament on the signup sheet posted on the white board outside the pro shop. This major fund raiser for the club, put on by the membership, is on October 9 and is open to the public. There will be putting and chipping contests and a lot of fun. If you cannot play golf that day you can still support our club by signing up to be a patron sponsor for $50 and/or a tee sponsor for $100. I hope to see you there. H.C. Howser organized a very successful work day on September 5. Many maintenance tasks were completed, and Thank you very much to the 20 people who donated their time and talents. the month. Pray for no rain until after the contractors have completed their work. We had 120+ members attend the all members meeting held on September 19. Our board of director s vice-president, Cecil Robbins, treasurer, Jim Barrilleaux, and membership and marketing chairperson, Doreen Lewellan explained our loan history, our current financial situation and our membership numbers as background for the board of directors dues increases effective October 1, No one likes to have a dues increase, and we haven t had one in 3 years, but it is necessary to meet our loan payments on the clubhouse with our new lender, Beltway Capital. The swimming pool will officially close on October 4. Lights will be turned off, pool furniture will be put away, and the lock code will be changed. Thank you to all the members who volunteered to be pool supervisors this last pool season. This program would not work without your efforts. This has been a very successful membership for our club. Next year is sure to be even better. We have negotiated a new cart lease deal with Yamaha. They promise better service than we have had with Club Car as well as a free utility vehicle that Sean and his crew can put to good use. The new carts should arrive by November 1. Hooray! The ceiling leaks will be gone in the hallway and the bar. Work to repair the flat roof of the clubhouse will begin the first week of October. This $12,000 project should be completed before the middle of The Nevada County Concert Band gave a concert at Alta sierra Country Club on September 10, An at-a-boy to Mike Ireland for arranging for this to happen. It was a wonderful community event. Thank you for continuing to support our club. It is more than just about the golf. It is the social interaction. Nancy and I have made many lasting friends the 17 years we have been members.
3 CHIEF TOURNAMENT October 9th For many years, this traditional event has been for the benefit of the club by raising funds to help pay for various projects. One of our big expenses this year will be a much-needed roof repair. Non-members are also welcome to participate. Please invite your friends! This is a time to have fun with other members, to get together for a game of golf, enjoy a meal, and be making a financial contribution to our club., WE NEED YOUR HELP We are in need of raffle and silent auction items to make this a successful event. Please consider donating items that will help our club. You can drop off your donations at the office before October 9th. Please put your name on the items so we know whom to thank! Sign-up sheets for the tee sponsorships are located outside the pro shop. This gives you a chance to support your favorite hole. If you are unable to attend the golf tournament, please consider sponsoring a hole. Check-in will begin at 9 am and there will be putting and chipping contests to test your skills! While all this is happening, our delicious homemade Scones and coffee will be served for breakfast In case you get thirsty out there, we will have two bars set up one on hole 7 and one on 15. After Golf Hamburgers with various salads. There will be raffle prizes and a silent auction. The price for food and golf is $60 per person.
4 SWIMMING POOL H.C. Howser & Ann Podielski The pool is getting very little use now. The water is quite chilly and the air is really cooling down. There is very little interest in swimming, and it's too cold to bask in the sun. The umbrella's and the gazebo are down and the furniture will be put away this month. The lights in the showers and restrooms will be turned off and the gate code will be changed. The pool is closing...sad but true. It's been a very good summer and the pool got plenty of use. As you know the pool hours are from 11:00am to 5:00pm, when guests are also allowed to swim. Members only can swim before 11:00 and after 5:00. It was a very hot summer and many seemed to avoid the heat and showed up after 5:00. We had more pool memberships this year...bringing much needed income to the club. To these pool members we thank you, and hope you enjoyed yourselves. With all the use, the pool is showing a little wear and tear. Hopefully before next summer we will be able to replace some missing pool tiles and reset some of the coving around the shallow end. The two drains in the deeper end need to be replaced before next summer, also. A sensor to the pool chlorinator started to malfunction early in the summer and needed to be replaced. This made a very big difference in pool clarity. Also, for your information, during the summer months the pool is professionally cleaned and maintained twice a week. So, thanks to everyone involved...pool attendants, office staff, and especially to all you pool users... you did your part by keeping the pool area clean and always looking nice. Again, THANK YOU.
5 THE GOLF SHOP Kacey Tyler Fall is here, so besides the change in the weather there are also some changes at Alta Sierra CC. First the Men s day and Ladies Day tee times move to 9:00, ladies check in time is 8:30 and men please be here by 8:40 if you are playing in the SBOAS or Nooners, then there are the Golf Shop hours of operation which for now will just be opening time of 7:30 am. For the month of October, we will still sell range balls until 4:30 and the range will close at 5:00. The CHIEF Tournament is the 9 th of October and I hope everyone has signed up for this fun event. We will have a couple of Designated Drivers on the course to send your ball farther than ever before, Margaritas will be poured, food and raffle prizes will also be available. So, join in the fun and support your club. The new employee you ve been seeing behind the counter is Brian DeLoach, he will be working mostly in the outside service area but while Clay was on vacation we used him inside the shop so be sure to say Hi and introduce yourself. 10 Betty Koski By the time, you read this article the Club Championship will have been played and your handy USGA Rules Book will have been consulted a few times for correct rulings. Congrats to all of you who carry this small tome in your golf bag! On our bulletin board, I have posted copies of pages from the 'Golf Rules Illustrated' book by USGA which pertain to situations occurring on the putting green. Rule 16-1 concerns itself with these points: Touching Line of Putt; Lifting and Cleaning Ball and Repair of Hole plugs; Ball Marks and Other Damage; Testing Surface: Standing Astride or on Line of Putt; Making Stroke While Another Ball in Motion. Rule 16-2 is about what should be done if your ball is overhanging the hole. I recommend looking at these well illustrated rules since it is a painless way to refresh your memory on rules pertaining to situations occurring on the putting green. I came across another rule in the October 2017 Rules Guy column in Golf magazine that definitely is applicable to some of us who upon hitting the ball out of grass see the ball stick to the club until the club gets knee high and then leaves the club heading for the green. The official name for this is 'Spooning" which puts a player in breach of Rule 14-1a which causes a player to get a two-stroke penalty in Stroke Play and the loss of the hole in Match Play. Another situation mentioned in this same column is one which I refer to as "the dumbest thing I've ever done on the golf course." That is taking a whiff for which I always take a one stroke penalty. In the same Rules Guy column, a golfer's opponent took a whiff and he said that he was allowed to determine whether or not he intended to hit the ball when the 'whiff' happened. This person claimed he was just taking a practice swing. The Rules guy said that the golfer's option is to refer the matter to the competition committee and if this fellow continues to play that way, avoid playing with him or her. I must say that I have only played with honest people who always take that extra stroke for their whiffs! Lucky me. Until next month here's to many pars, birdies and eagles for all of you and hopefully you'll not have to refer to your handy Rules Book. READERS CORNER Submitted by Jan Core Gray Mountain by John Grisham In 1917 Upton Sinclair wrote about the plight of the miner's life in the lonesome pits of the Rocky Mountains in King Coal. Almost 100 years later, John Grisham takes up the same topic and puts it in the modern arena. The year is 2008 the housing market is collapsing and the Stock Market is in a tailspin. Samantha Kofer's promising law career with a Wall Street firm comes to a halt. She is only one of many young promising attorneys without a job. The various law firms don't want to lose all this talent so they offer a proposition. If these young lawyers can find a job with a non profit and volunteer their time for a year there will be a good chance that they will be rehired by their former firms. After much effort, Samantha finds a job in a legal aid clinic in the heart of Appalachia s coal country. Her new job takes her to a place she has never heard of. She enters into a dangerous world where laws are often broken, rules and regulations ignored, miners lives have little value and the land is being raped by Big Coal. She finds this first hand as she begins helping the coal miners. As is usual in Grisham's novels he has the ability to take the reader on a wild and perilous journey. How will it end and will it end? A good read on a current topic or should I say a recurring topic for 100 years. For further visual information Netflix has a documentary on this topic in "Blood on the Mountain.
