3 STORY 1 Finding a Kentucky Derby winner BY BYRON KING LOUISVILLE, Ky. It is not uncommon to see horseplayers deviate from their customary handicapping methods when it comes to the Kentucky Derby. Accustomed to making their bets by analyzing past performances, some forego this routine and instead handicap the Derby off recollections of the prep races and well-publicized historical rules, sometimes picking their Derby horse weeks in advance. More power to those for whom this is the winning practice, but it is one I cannot endorse. Better to analyze the data in the past performances and handicap the Kentucky Derby by the fundamentals of handicapping, historical rules be dammed. I approach the Derby like I would any other race while acknowledging that it is unique in terms of being 1 1/4 miles, longer than any of the horses have raced, and with an exceptionally large field of up to 20 horses. So, what follows is an analysis of the Derby reflecting what I consider to be the key factors that apply to each and every race: speed figures, class, pace, and distance capability. Speed figures Speed figures answer the question of who the fastest horses are coming into the race. And in examining this year s Kentucky Derby, it is clear that only a few horses have run quickly to date, having cracked the 100 Beyer Speed Figure threshold. They include Classic Empire, who ran a 102 in winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile last fall, though he has not run as quickly this year at 3; Irish War Cry, who notched a 101 in winning the Holy Bull and a 100 in the Wood Memorial this year; and J Boys Echo, who posted a 102 in winning the Grade 3 Gotham, one start before a fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes in his final Derby prep. In terms of last-race efforts, the fastest in this year s Derby are Irish War Cry, with the aforementioned 101 in the Wood Memorial; Always Dreaming, who earned a 97 in winning the Florida Derby; and Hence, the winner of the Sunland Derby, with a 97. Among the favorites and midpriced horses, ranking poorly in the speed-figure category are Girvin, Gormley, Irap, and Practical Joke none of whom has run faster than a 93 in his last two races. It should be noted that while Beyer Speed Figures are not officially produced for races from Dubai, UAE Derby winner Thunder Snow was estimated to have run a 94 by Andy Beyer. Class Although the definition of class differs among handicappers, I ve often ranked class by high-quality efforts against top competition. And from that perspective, the classiest horses in the Derby are Classic Empire, Irish War Cry, Always Dreaming, Gunnevera, and, to a lesser extent, McCraken. Horses such as Irap and Hence have been classy in specific races in winning the Blue Grass and Sunland Derby, respectively but not to the extent of the top contenders on a consistent basis. Absent from my classy group is Gormley despite his having notched two Grade 1 victories. His wins in the FrontRunner and Santa Anita Derby came in low-quality renewals of those Grade 1 events. Pace There appears to be no shortage of pace in the Derby, though there are few need-the-lead types. Anticipate longshot Fast and Accurate doing his best to make the lead. Probably the longest price on the board, one would think his best chance might be to make the front and hope the riders on the other speed horses take back to avoid a duel with a horse who figures to come back to the pack. Figuring to race in close attendance to the lead are Always Dreaming, Irish War Cry, Irap, and State of Honor, plus another unexpected horse or so. It s the horses right behind this flight who are seemingly going to enjoy the best trips, sitting within striking range of the leaders but not involved with the pace. They are Classic Empire, Gormley, and Battle of Midway, who I would expect will revert to a rating style after being part of a contested pace in the Santa Anita Derby. I also anticipate McCraken being more patiently handled after he was an even-paced third in the Blue Grass while rating close to the speed. His route victories have come when he rallied from the rear half of the pack. Distance capability Dubai raider Thunder Snow won the UAE Derby at 1,900 meters, which is a little longer than 1 3/16 miles meaning he is the horse closest to winning at 1 1/4 miles. As for the U.S.-based horses, winners going at least 1 1/8 miles include Girvin, Classic Empire, Gormley, Irap, Irish War Cry, Always Dreaming, Hence, and Fast and Accurate. Most of those look capable at the Derby distance, with the exception of longshot Fast and Accurate, who covered his final eighth of a mile in winning the 1 1/8-mile Spiral Stakes in seconds. Of those who haven t won at 1 1/8 miles, Gunnevera, McCraken, Tapwrit, Lookin At Lee, and Sonnateer look most apt to like 1 1/4 miles. The same can t be as confidently stated about Practical Joke, who has seemed fatigued in two of his three two-turn races, with the exception coming last out in the Blue Grass, where he rallied to be second. Even then, he couldn t catch longshot Irap after seeming to have dead aim at the top of the stretch. 3

4 Putting it all together Although his victory in the Arkansas Derby wasn t as dominant as some of his others, Classic Empire managed to overcome adversity, both in some training setbacks leading up to the race and then during the running, when he was steadied early and stuck in heavy traffic down the backstretch. He had every right to lose the race but didn t, and the Arkansas Derby should move him forward and leave him better prepared for the Kentucky Derby. Barring a poor post, he will be my selection to win the Kentucky Derby since he possesses the speed figures, class, tactical speed, and, seemingly, the ability to get the distance. He is also a two-time winner at Churchill, his longtime training base. Irish War Cry intrigues the next most considering how quickly he has run in two of his three routes. Though he hasn t raced at Churchill, he has won over three different racetracks in his fiverace career, including a victory over Gunnevera and Classic Empire in the Holy Bull Stakes in February. McCraken also should be a force, having training exceptionally well leading into the Derby and seemingly ready to take advantage of what should be a lively pace. If there is a vulnerable favorite, it could be Always Dreaming, who has been extremely keen in his training, suggesting that he could get sucked into a hot pace or fight jockey Johnny Velazquez if he tries to rate him in the mad dash to establish position into the first turn. Price horses to use for pick-up-the-pieces positions are Gunnevera and Hence. 4

5 Always Dreaming x-1 Breeder: Santa Rosa Partners Trainer: Todd A. Pletcher Owner: Brooklyn Boyz Stables, Teresa Viola Racing Stables, et al. Jockey: John Velazquez Record: STRENGTHS: He s 3 for 3 since stretching out to two turns and has been virtually untested going long, winning those routes by lopsided margins of 11 1/2, four, and five lengths. That five-length score came in the Florida Derby, his first attempt in a stakes race, and it was such a commanding victory that it made him the future book Kentucky Derby favorite for two weeks, until Classic Empire got back on track and won the Arkansas Derby. The 97 Beyer Speed Figure he earned in the Florida Derby marked a significant step forward in that department, and the on-the-pace or close-to-the-pace running style he has employed since stretching out puts him in position to draw good trips most every time. WEAKNESSES: The early paces he was either part of or close to in all of his two-turn starts were moderate to downright slow. He will likely encounter a more demanding pace in the Derby, and it is an unknown how he will react to it. He might remain close early because that is what he is most comfortable doing, but that would extract energy needed for the late stages. Or he could lay farther back and not expend as much early effort, but that would put him in a position he s unfamiliar with going long. BETTING VALUE: He could be second choice in the betting, somewhere around 6-1. That s a nice price in a vacuum, and will certainly appeal to his most ardent admirers, but not so much in an open, 20-horse Derby field. Mike Watchmaker SIRE: Bodemeister, who had brilliance that could be carried, romped in the Arkansas Derby, then was a hard-fought second in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He is a promising young sire from a consistently classic-producing male line. Bodemeister s sire, Pioneerof the Nile, second in the Kentucky Derby, is the sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and champion Classic Empire, this year s probable Derby favorite. The grandsire is Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, who is by classic sire Unbridled. DAM: Above Perfection, a Grade 3-winning sprinter, is the dam of Hot Dixie Chick, winner of the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes as a juvenile. Hot Dixie Chick is the dam of stakes winner Union Jackson, who seems to have found a niche as a one-turn runner despite being by a prominent stamina source in Curlin. OUTLOOK: Bodemeister may well have the ability to sire a successful runner in the Triple Crown series, but the trends in Always Dreaming s immediate female family are cause for pause. 6 Battle of Midway x-1 Breeder: Thor-Bred Stables, LLC Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer Owner: WinStar Farm, Don Alberto Stable Jockey: Flavien Prat Record: STRENGTHS: Gave a courageous effort in defeat when second to Gormley in the Santa Anita Derby. Battled with two others from the outset and was still punching on gamely in the stretch. He is far from a need-the-lead type, however, as he rallied from midpack to win his prior start, an entry-level optional claimer at Santa Anita. This versatility should serve him well in the Derby. A son of Smart Strike out of Grade 1 winner Rigoletta, he has stamina and class in his bloodlines. The Derby distance shouldn t prove too much of an obstacle. WEAKNESSES: Battle of Midway must overcome the curse of Apollo if he is to win this year s Derby. The 1882 Kentucky Derby hero, Apollo is the only Derby winner that didn t race as a 2-year-old. Battle of Midway didn t make his career debut until Jan. 21. He is very short on experience. His career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 88 is very light when compared to some of the shorter-priced horses like Classic Empire, Irish War Cry, and Always Dreaming. He must show dramatic improvement in that regard to win the Derby. BETTING VALUE: A lightly raced horse with upside potential, Battle of Midway must tap into all of that potential to upset this field. Fair win odds hover around the 30-1 mark. Dan Illman SIRE: Smart Strike was a perennial top sire prior to his death in He won the Grade 1 Philip H. Iselin Handicap at 1 1/16 miles, a distance at which he won three times. The average winning distance of his progeny of 7.72 furlongs is the highest of this year s class of Kentucky Derby sires. He has a fleet of runners who have succeeded at a distance, including two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, winner of the Breeders Cup Classic and Preakness and in the top three in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Battle of Midway is Smart Strike s sixth Derby starter. The sire s best performance in the race came from Curlin, who ran third in DAM: Rigoletta won 2 of 6 starts, including the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. She also finished third in the Grade 1 Debutante Stakes at seven furlongs. Battle of Midway is Rigoletta s first foal to race and has won at six furlongs and 1 1/16 miles. The extended family is highlighted by champion female sprinter Musical Romance. OUTLOOK: With high-end, two-turn success on both sides of the family, this colt appears well bred to get the distance. 7 Classic Empire x-1 Breeder: Steven Nicholson & Brandi Nicholson Trainer: Mark E. Casse Owner: John C. Oxley Jockey: Julien Leparoux Record: STRENGTHS: A case could be made that when last year s unanimous Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male is on his game, he is simply better than his contemporaries. He showed a lot of substance winning the Breeders Futurity last fall in his first attempt around two turns in what also was his first representative outing in three months (not counting his Hopeful debacle when he wheeled leaving the gate), and he won a strongly run Breeders Cup Juvenile in good time. He also showed considerable depth winning the Arkansas Derby in his most recent start, considering it was his first real race since the Breeders Cup five months earlier (not counting his complete misfire in the Holy Bull), and in light of a compromised training schedule leading up to that race due to a foot issue and a couple of episodes of being unwilling to train. His ability to win from up close or behind is another asset. WEAKNESSES: He must improve on the Arkansas Derby because a duplication of his effort at Oaklawn won t be good enough to win. That said, obviously his biggest weakness is himself. Will he train willingly in the mornings? Will he stay calm in the intense Derby atmosphere? Will he do something crazy and unpredictable like he did at the start of the Hopeful? No one knows for certain. BETTING VALUE: He will be the favorite, so there isn t much value, even if you think he s better than everyone else. He might represent value in a reverse sense as a bet-against favorite who has a lot of questions to address. Mike Watchmaker SIRE: Pioneerof the Nile continues to cement his reputation as a source of stamina after having scored all his own wins at a mile or longer. His first crop included Kentucky Derby prep winners Cairo Prince and Vinceremos, and his son Social Inclusion finished third in both the Wood Memorial and Preakness. Emerging from Pioneerof the Nile s second crop was Triple Crown hero American Pharoah. His sire, Empire Maker, won the 2003 Belmont Stakes, and his grandsire is Kentucky Derby winner and classic sire Unbridled. DAM: Sambuca Classica has produced three stakes winners, but only Classic Empire has won beyond six furlongs. Uptown Twirl was a multiple stakes winner at six furlongs last season, and Anytime Magic won the Lost in the Fog Stakes at five furlongs. This is the extended family of several outstanding racemares, including champion Revidere, Hollywood Gold Cup winner Princessnesian, and stakes winner and producer In Her Glory. Several descended from this family have served as evidence of its stamina, including Florida Derby, Blue Grass, and Donn Handicap winner Harlan s Holiday. OUTLOOK: Classic Empire is by a proven young classic sire and has picked up the class of his female line while outrunning his siblings distance limits. 8 Fast and Accurate x-1 Breeder: John R. Penn Trainer: Michael J. Maker Owner: Kendall E. Hansen, Skychai Racing Jockey: Channing Hill Record: STRENGTHS: A winner of three consecutive races, including most recently the Grade 3 Spiral on Polytrack on March 25 at Turfway, he in the best form of his career. Though naturally speedy, he has shown the ability to sit just off the pace and be effective, as he did in the Spiral when he rated in third before surging to the lead heading into the stretch. WEAKNESSES: He finished fifth, beaten 11 3/4 lengths, in his lone dirt start, which came at Parx Racing last October and resulted in a 27 Beyer Speed Figure, the lowest of his six-race career. And even if one doubts regression with the surface switch, he would be an unlikely Derby winner if he merely maintained his current synthetic form. He took 1:50.96 to complete 1 1/8 miles in the Spiral, a race capped by a final eighth in a dawdling seconds, and received a subpar 82 Beyer. With none of the more prominent jockeys taking the mount in the Kentucky Derby, it will go to Derby first-timer Channing Hill. BETTING VALUE: Other than his owners, who supplemented him to the Triple Crown at a cost of $200,000 after missing earlier deadlines for $600 and $6,000, he has few backers. Longshots in the modern Kentucky Derby era have rarely started in excess of 50-1 or 60-1, and he should go off at a price in that vicinity. Byron King SIRE: Hansen is a champion juvenile who raced at less than a mile just once in nine career starts. Four of his five wins came at 1 1/16 miles, highlighted by the 2011 Breeders Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. He finished ninth in the 2012 Kentucky Derby. Fast and Accurate is part of Hansen s first crop at stud, which has posted an average winning distance of 6.53 furlongs, putting Hansen in the bottom tier of the Kentucky Derby sires in that category. His other notable offspring include Han Sense, a stakes winner at six furlongs and Grade 3 placed at 1 1/16 miles; En Hanse, a stakes winner at 6 1/2 furlongs; The Walk, who is stakes placed at 6 1/2 furlongs; and Lady Hansen, who was stakes placed on the turf at seven furlongs. DAM: All four starts for It s Heidi s Dance came at a mile, and she finished third in three of them, all on turf. All six of the mare s foals to race have been winners, including Lady Gi, who is stakes placed in Peru at about 1 1/4 miles and has won at the distance. It s Heidi s Dance s foals have been tested frequently at a route distance, and nine of her progeny s 16 wins have been at distances longer than a mile. OUTLOOK: The mare s side brings some stamina, but a Grade 1 race at the classic distance seems like too much to ask from this pedigree. 9 Girvin x-1 Breeder: Bob Austin & John Witte Trainer: Joe Sharp Owner: Brad Grady Jockey: Mike Smith Record: G STRENGTHS: The leading point earner on the road to the Kentucky Derby, he is unbeaten in his three starts on dirt, with his only loss being a second-place finish in a stakes race on turf. In addition to a maiden victory, his wins came at Fair Grounds in the Grade 2 Risen Star and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Already a winner at 1 1/8 miles, he looks well suited to the Derby s 1 1/4-mile distance. With only four starts, he may have room for further development. WEAKNESSES: Interrupted training. He missed a scheduled work and regular gallops two weeks before the Derby due to a quarter crack in his right front hoof, a condition that required the care of a specialist and has resulted in him periodically swimming, rather than training ontrack, to ease stress to his foot. Beyond that setback, he is slower than most of the leading contenders, with his highest Beyer Speed Figures falling in the low 90s. Although he won the Risen Star and Louisiana Derby with authority, those fields were not as loaded with talent as other major Derby preps. The best 3-year-olds he has beaten are Derby longshots Untrapped and Patch. BETTING VALUE: After the discovery of his quarter crack and the unconventional training regimen that has followed, he is likely to start at odds of 15-1 or higher. Byron King SIRE: Tale of Ekati won the 2008 Wood Memorial before finishing a creditable fourth in the Kentucky Derby. Later that year he finished second in the Cigar Mile, but was elevated to first via disqualification. Tale of Ekati has produced a handful of graded performers, including Tale of Verve, second to American Pharoah in the 2015 Preakness. He also is the sire of Grade 2 winner Ekati s Phaeton and Grade 3 winner Verve s Tale, both having scored their signature wins around one turn. DAM: Catch the Moon s first foal was Cocked and Loaded, winner of the Tremont Stakes sprinting and third in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes later in his 2-yearold season. He finished third in the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes sprinting the following year. This is the family of Grade 1-winning sprinter Yes It s True; Silver Max, winner of the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile in a year when it was contested on Polytrack due to a weatherrelated surface switch; and Canadian champion Kiss a Native. Malibu Moon, sire of Derby winner Orb, is generally regarded as a source of stamina and is the broodmare sire of champion Stellar Wind. 10 Gormley x-1 Breeder: Castleton Lyons & Kilboy Estate Trainer: John A. Shirreffs Owner: Mr. and Mrs. Jerome S. Moss Jockey: Victor Espinoza Record: STRENGTHS: His attributes include class, seasoning, and an admirable 4-for-6 career record. He has been a division leader since winning a Grade 1 in his second start. It was not a fluke; he subsequently has won two more graded stakes, including the Santa Anita Derby. His seventh in the Breeders Cup Juvenile was a toss. He exerted so little energy that he returned to the track and trained the very next day. This season, Gormley re-established his credentials, winning two stakes, including the Santa Anita Derby in his most recent start. Gormley has tactical speed, he can close, and he has been trained throughout his career to take dirt and rally inside. His Santa Anita Derby win was not fast, but it was scrappy. His career-high Beyer Speed Figure is a modest 94. That is okay. Nyquist had a career-high route figure of 92 into last year s Derby; 2012 winner I ll Have Another had a 96 top; and 2011 winner Animal Kingdom had a 94 top. A big figure is admirable, but not requisite for Derby victory. Gormley s trainer, John Shirreffs, won the 2005 Derby with longshot Giacomo; jockey Victor Espinoza has won three with War Emblem, California Chrome, and American Pharoah. WEAKNESSES: His final prep was slow. The Santa Anita Derby was run in a laborious 1: He ran the final three furlongs in about seconds and earned an 88 Beyer. The past quarter-century, the lowest prep-race Beyer by a Derby winner was 91, by Sea Hero in BETTING VALUE: Gormley has class and seasoning. Speed-figure bettors won t like him. That s good it helps his price. Fair odds on Gormley: Brad Free SIRE: Malibu Moon, sire of 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, is known as an outstanding filly sire, and in fact has Farrell in this year s Kentucky Oaks. His Grade 1-winning daughters include Ask the Moon, Carina Mia, Devil May Care, Eden s Moon, Funny Moon, Life At Ten, Malibu Mint, and Malibu Prayer. Most posted their signature victories at a mile or longer, in keeping with the stamina provided by the A.P. Indy line. DAM: Gormley is the first foal out of Race to Urga, who scored all her victories at 1 1/16 miles on turf, including the Wait a While Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Race to Urga s dam, Miss Mambo, was third in the French 1000 Guineas, and the next dam is Arlington Million winner and champion Estrapade. Estrapade s foals included Rice, who set a Meadowlands track record at 1 3/8 miles. Estrapade is a half-sister to 1990 Horse of the Year Criminal Type and Italian Group 1 winner Isopach. OUTLOOK: The pedigree question with Gormley was never how far he would run or how good his genetics suggested he could be, but what surface he would prefer. The female family is laden with class and stamina, mostly on turf. However, with proven classic sire Malibu Moon providing both dirt ability and additional stamina, Gormley has found his footing as California s leading Derby contender. 11 Gunnevera x-1 Breeder: Brandywine Farm & Stephen Upchurch Trainer: Antonio Sano Owner: Peacock Racing Stables, LLC Jockey: Javier Castellano Record: STRENGTHS: He has been a division leader since winning the Grade 2 Saratoga Special as a juvenile, and his five starts in graded routes include two wins and two in-the-money finishes. Based on class, Gunnevera has appropriate credentials for Derby victory. There is no better jockey in North America than Javier Castellano, Eclipse Award winner four straight years, yet surprisingly off the board with his 10 previous Derby mounts. Castellano is due for a Derby win and riding as well as anyone in the country. He rode Gunnevera in five graded stakes, resulting in three wins and two other in-the-money finishes. Gunnevera is seasoned, having started nine times. His pedigree and closing style suggest 1 1/4 miles is within his range. WEAKNESSES: If closing style is a strength, one could argue it also is a potential weakness due to the inherent challenges that all late runners face. Gunnevera requires a strong pace at which to run, and he must avoid traffic. No guarantees he will get either. Furthermore, his most recent start, third as the Florida Derby favorite, was unexciting. He dropped out, rallied wide, and earned a low 88 Beyer. Gunnevera faces a tall order based on speed figures, as do others. No horse in the past quarter-century has won a Derby with a last-out Beyer lower than 91. BETTING VALUE: If not for his Florida Derby misfire, Gunnevera would be among the favorites. His distant third, in a race he did not need to win, hides his form and helps his price. Gunnevera offers value at 10-1 or higher. Brad Free SIRE: Dialed In won the 2011 Florida Derby before finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby and fourth in the Preakness. He went on to be the leading freshman sire of 2016, led by Gunnevera s juvenile exploits. Dialed In is by Mineshaft, who also has a starter in this Kentucky Derby in J Boys Echo and who has sired two classic-placed runners in Nehro and Fly Down. The A.P. Indy sireline is a source of stamina. DAM: The unplaced Unbridled Rage is the dam of Minstrel Queen, who was Grade 1 placed in Puerto Rico at 1 3/16 miles. Broodmare sire Unbridled also is generally regarded as a source of stamina and is the sire of classic winners Grindstone, Red Bullet, and Empire Maker with the latter two having won their classic on a wet track. OUTLOOK: While not particularly flashy, Gunnevera should relish extra ground. His pedigree also indicates he d be able to handle a wet track, which he s already put into practice. 12 Hence x-1 Breeder: Calumet Farm Trainer: Steven M. Asmussen Owner: Calumet Farm Jockey: Florent Geroux Record: STRENGTHS: He comes into the Kentucky Derby off a runaway score in the Sunland Derby that was by far the best performance of his career and in which he earned a career-top Beyer Speed Figure of 97, which is competitive with any Kentucky Derby aspirant. His Sunland Derby also has proven to be a very productive race. Runner-up Conquest Mo Money came back to be a narrowly beaten second to Kentucky Derby favorite Classic Empire in the Arkansas Derby; third-place finisher Hedge Fund came back to be beaten just a head in the Illinois Derby; fourth-place finisher Irap came back to win the Blue Grass; and fifth-place finisher Total Tap came back to be a close third in the Northern Spur. Moreover, all four of those horses improved Beyer-wise off the Sunland Derby from 2 to 10 points, flattering this colt even more. WEAKNESSES: He received an ideal setup in the Sunland Derby with a very hot early pace that disintegrated, playing to his late kick. His only other attempt against stakes company was the polar opposite of his Sunland Derby, a dull and distant seventh in the Southwest just two starts back. He s most effective as a deep closer, so he ll need racing luck in a big field. BETTING VALUE: Despite coming out of such a productive prep race, his odds should be somewhere in the range of 15-1 to 20-1, which makes him a mustuse in at least vertical wagers. Mike Watchmaker SIRE: Street Boss is a multiple Grade 1-winning sprinter who never raced at a distance longer than seven furlongs. He won the Grade 1 Triple Bend Invitational Handicap at seven furlongs and the Bing Crosby Handicap at six furlongs. Despite his ontrack résumé and his progeny s average winning distance of 6.59 furlongs, which puts him near the bottom of this year s Kentucky Derby sires in that category, Street Boss has proven capable of siring a high-level route horse, including last year s Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia. He also is the sire of Danza, winner of the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at 1 1/8 miles and the third-place finisher in the 2014 Kentucky Derby. DAM: Floating Island finished second in 2 of 6 starts, once at seven furlongs and once at 1 3/16 miles. She is the dam of three winners from six foals to race, including Conquest Stormy, who finished second in a turf stakes at a mile and never raced at a shorter distance. Of her progeny s six wins, five have come at a route. OUTLOOK: Big things have happened when Street Boss foals outrun the sire s sprinter tendencies. Hence cleared that hurdle in the Sunland Derby and shouldn t be hampered at Churchill Downs. 13 Irap x-1 Breeder: Aaron & Marie Jones Trainer: Doug F. O Neill Owner: Reddam Racing LLC Jockey: Mario Gutierrez Record: STRENGTHS: Even though Irap failed to win in his first seven starts, his connections continued to treat him like a top 3-year-old. Their faith was rewarded when Irap upset the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, and they now have a sharp, in-form runner who seems to be training well going into this Derby. Trainer Doug O Neill, owner Paul Reddam, and jockey Mario Gutierrez have won two of the last five runnings of this race (Nyquist, 2016; I ll Have Another, 2012). Like Irap, both of those horses entered the Derby off a victory in a major prep race. Irap boasts a strong pedigree as he is a half-brother to champion sprinter Speightstown. He gets stamina from his sire, Tiznow. WEAKNESSES: Irap must prove to his skeptics that his Blue Grass victory at odds of 31-1 wasn t a one-off fluke. Some handicappers believe that he was greatly aided by a speed-friendly surface in a race without much pace. Plus, Irap s Blue Grass finish wasn t the most attractive as he failed to change leads in the stretch. The waters get deeper from a pace and class perspective. Irap has lost ground from the stretch call to the wire in all of his dirt races. While his tactical speed may allow him to avoid early traffic issues, a fast and contentious pace might work against him once the real racing begins. BETTING VALUE: A sharp horse with speed is nothing to scoff at, but Irap s overall body of work, including a loss in the Mine That Bird Derby at Sunland Park, will likely have him a big price on the Churchill Downs tote. Odds of 25-1 seem like fair value. Dan Illman SIRE: Tiznow is the only horse to capture two editions of the Breeders Cup Classic. Following in his form, most of his best runners have excelled around two turns, including 2008 Belmont Stakes winner Da Tara. He also is the sire of Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, Santa Anita Derby and Travers Stakes winner Colonel John, Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and champion Folklore, Whitney Handicap winners Tizway and Bullsbay, and Grade 1 route winners Gemologist, Tiz Miz Sue, and Tough Tiz s Sis. Tiznow also passes size to his offspring, and Irap isn t likely to be pushed around in a 20-horse field. DAM: Canadian champion juvenile filly Silken Cat s first foal was champion Speightstown, who won the 2004 Breeders Cup Sprint. Although Irap s immediate family is slanted toward speed, there is stamina further back in a family that has been producing stellar runners for decades and in a variety of locales. This is the extended family of Horse of the Year and Preakness winner Hill Prince, champion First Landing, Irish St. Leger winner Petite Ile, Venezuelan Triple Crown winner Catire Bello, and Grade 1 winners Cherokee Colony, Crusader Sword, Mani Bhavan, and Turk Passer. 14 Irish War Cry x-1 Breeder: Isabelle de Tomaso Trainer: H. Graham Motion Owner: Isabelle de Tomaso Jockey: Rajiv Maragh Record: STRENGTHS: He s one of the most accomplished members of the field as a winner of two Kentucky Derby preps, the Holy Bull and the Wood Memorial. In the Holy Bull, he defeated both Gunnevera, who returned in his next start to capture the Fountain of Youth, and Classic Empire, the champion who one start later won the Arkansas Derby. Irish War Cry is the lone Derby starter to have earned multiple triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures, putting up a 100 and a 101 for his prep wins. He has the kind of natural speed that can keep him out of trouble in a large field. He wins often, with a career mark of 4 for 5, and his trainer, Graham Motion, won the Kentucky Derby in 2011 with Animal Kingdom. WEAKNESSES: He has never raced or worked at Churchill Downs, although he has won at three tracks in his five-race career. In the Wood Memorial, he had nary a straw in his path while defeating just seven horses. His lone loss came when he was taken back off the pace in the Fountain of Youth and he never got going again, finishing seventh to Gunnevera. He is a May foal and the youngest member of Saturday s field. BETTING VALUE: He can win the Kentucky Derby and could go off as the second or third choice. He also is one to use in all exotics as a horse who has been a consistent performer at a high level. Mary Rampellini SIRE: Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin was a force at classic distances throughout his career and has produced a runner who won or placed in the Triple Crown series in each of his first four crops. He followed 2013 Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice with Ride On Curlin, second to California Chrome in the 2014 Preakness. Keen Ice finished third to American Pharoah in the 2015 Belmont, before turning the tables in the Travers. Last year, Curlin s son Exaggerator won the Preakness and was runner-up in the Kentucky Derby. Curlin also is the sire of champion Stellar Wind and Grade 1 winners Curalina, Connect, and Off the Tracks. DAM: Irish Sovereign and her dam, Irish Genius, never won beyond six furlongs. This is the first of Irish Sovereign s foals to win beyond 1 1/16 miles. Half-brother Irish Strait, a Grade 3-placed winner, is by English Channel, who, like Curlin, is by late classic sire Smart Strike. Irish War Cry is the only graded stakes winner under his first three dams, but farther back, the family has roots in the European classics, with descendants including Epsom Derby winner and champion Psidium and French 2000 Guineas winner Thymus. 15 J Boys Echo x-1 Breeder: Betz/Blackburn/J. Betz/Ramsby/CNHHNK Trainer: Dale L. Romans Owner: Albaugh Family Stable Jockey: Luis Saez Record: STRENGTHS: He is one of just three horses in the Kentucky Derby field who can boast a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure, the others being champion Classic Empire and Wood Memorial winner Irish War Cry. J Boys Echo earned his figure in the Gotham, getting a 102 for his clear win over the inner track at Aqueduct. He has experience at Churchill Downs, having run second at the track in his debut, and is trained by Dale Romans, who has had a good deal of success at Churchill. He also brings a useful stalking style to the table and a nice foundation of two-turn races in advance of the 1 1/4-mile task in the Derby. WEAKNESSES: He was unable to back up his big effort in the Gotham one start later in his final prep, the Blue Grass. He was making his first start beyond 1 1/16 miles in that race and was toting more weight than ever before. He ended up fourth behind a winner that had entered the Blue Grass as a maiden. He is losing his regular rider, Robby Albarado, due to injury. However, he picks up a capable replacement in Luis Saez, who registered one of his most notable wins at Churchill aboard Will Take Charge in the Clark Handicap. BETTING VALUE: He figures to go off at odds of better than 15-1, but can make an impact if he runs back to his Gotham. He seems like one to use underneath in the exotics. Mary Rampellini SIRE: Mineshaft, the 2003 Horse of the Year, excelled at the classic distance, winning the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and Suburban Handicap at 1 1/4 miles. The average winning distance of the sire s progeny of 7.32 furlongs puts him in the upper echelon of this year s Kentucky Derby sires in that category. He has proven more than capable of siring a two-turn horse, with successes including Grade 1 route winners Effinex, It s Tricky, Dialed In, and Weep No More, as well as 2010 Belmont Stakes runner-up Fly Down. J Boys Echo is Mineshaft s fifth Derby entrant, with his progeny s best finish coming in 2012 when Nehro finished second to Animal Kingdom. DAM: Letgomyecho raced four times, winning her three starts at less than a mile and finishing fifth in her lone effort around two turns. She won the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at seven furlongs. The mare has produced five winners from seven foals to race, with two of those having won at a mile or longer. J Boys Echo is the most successful of the group, having won the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. Half-brother Unbridled Outlaw is Grade 3-placed at the same distance. OUTLOOK: The distance capabilities from the sire s side should outweigh any limitations from the dam, as shown by her ability to produce graded-level route horses. 16 Local Hero x-1 Breeder: Three Chimneys Farm, LLC Trainer: Steven M. Asmussen Owner: e Five Racing Thoroughbreds Jockey: Undecided Record: STRENGTHS: He is a consistent sort, having finished first, second, or third in his five starts. He met winners for the first time in the Risen Star and finished a respectable third, then ran another creditable race one start later when third in the Louisiana Derby. He has natural speed, which could help keep him out of trouble in the large field Saturday. He also has familiarity with Churchill Downs, having run second over the local strip last November in his second start. Steve Asmussen, his trainer, is in the Hall of Fame. WEAKNESSES: From a Beyer Speed Figure standpoint, he is lagging behind the top contenders, with his best number an 89 earned for a maiden special weight route win at Fair Grounds. Local Hero has yet to win a stakes race, and there are reasons to believe he will be tested at the 1 1/4-mile trip of the Derby. BETTING VALUE: He figures to go off at 20-1 or higher should he draw into the field and would be a candidate to use underneath in the exotics because he has been a consistent performer in graded stakes. Mary Rampellini SIRE: Hard Spun, by the great Danzig, won the Grade 1 King s Bishop Stakes at seven furlongs and was a multiple graded winner around two turns and second in both the Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup Classic. His best runners have excelled at routes on dirt and turf, including champion Questing, Wood Memorial winner Wicked Strong, and Grade 1 winners Hard Aces, Hard Not to Like, Hardest Core, and Zo Impressive. DAM: Liam s Dream won 4 of 5 starts, including the Grade 3 Cicada Stakes. She never won beyond 6 1/2 furlongs and was third in the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at seven furlongs. Her dam, Danzig s Dreamer, never won beyond 6 1/2 furlongs, and a half-sister, Grade 2-placed Holdontoyourdream, never won beyond six. This is the extended family of multiple graded stakes winner and classic sire Distorted Humor. Horse of the Year Saint Liam sired only one crop of foals before his death, producing Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, and he is the broodmare sire of graded stakes winners Ahh Chocolate and Sharp Azteca. 17 Lookin At Lee x-1 Breeder: Ray Hanson Trainer: Steven M. Asmussen Owner: L and N Racing, LLC Jockey: Corey Lanerie Record: STRENGTHS: He comes into the Kentucky Derby off a third-place finish to Derby favorite Classic Empire in the Arkansas Derby. That was his best performance to date, and not just because of his finish position or the fact he was beaten only 1 1/2 lengths. While he again settled well off the early pace, he was closer in the early stages than he had been in his four prior outings, when he almost fell out of contact, and that should be taken as a positive sign. And he earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 91, despite taking an erratic course through the stretch in search of running room. He was on the board once before against Classic Empire when second in the Breeders Futurity last fall, and gives the strong impression of being one who will not be fazed by added distance. WEAKNESSES: As a closer, he is at the mercy of racing luck, and he will need some in a 20-horse Derby field because it s doubtful he can circle everyone at a loss of critical ground and still do well. His best Beyer is only a 91, which means he figures to need an improvement of at least 10 Beyer points twice as much as he improved in the Arkansas Derby if he is to be competitive at Churchill Downs. BETTING VALUE: He s going to be a big price, between 20-1 and 30-1, but the step forward he took in his good Arkansas Derby effort makes him one to include underneath in vertical wagers. Mike Watchmaker SIRE: Lookin At Lucky has been a steady sire, but from four crops of racing age still lacks a Grade 1 winner among his 13 Northern Hemisphere stakes winners. His best runner and leading earner is Grade 2 West Virginia Derby winner Madefromlucky. He s also the sire of Breaking Lucky, winner of the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales, part of the Canadian Triple Crown. Lookin At Lucky, champion at 2 and 3, won the Preakness, and his progeny s average winning distance is 7.32 furlongs. DAM: The family of Langara Lass is largely of Canadian racing extraction. Langara Lass won stakes at Hastings and Northlands, and her dam, Capilano, by Demons Begone, won stakes at Hastings and Emerald Downs. Capilano produced three other Northlands or Hastings stakes winners in Madeira Park, Overact, and Ambleside Park. While there s black type in the family, it is all well below graded stakes quality. OUTLOOK: Lookin At Lee, the fifth-leading earner for his sire, looks like he wants as much distance as possible, and is seeking to become the first Grade 1 winner for his sire and in his immediate female family. To do that, he will need a whole lot of Lookin At Lucky to come out of him in the last quarter-mile of the Derby. 18 Master Plan x-1 Breeder: Ernest C. Frohboese Trainer: Todd A. Pletcher Owner: Al Shaqab Racing, WinStar Farm et al Jockey: Undecided Record: STRENGTHS: The longer the race, seemingly the better he gets. He has gained ground in the final furlong of his five races, most notably when rallying to be third in the Group 2 UAE Derby in the mud March 25 at Meydan. That day, after angling out on the second turn, he closed the gap late to lose by 1 1/4 lengths to Thunder Snow. The UAE Derby, contested at about 1 3/16 miles, was run in a swift 1:57.76, and speed-figure guru Andrew Beyer estimated the winner earned a 94 Beyer Speed Figure, meaning Master Plan ran approximately a 92. Slight improvement on that number would give him a chance for at least a minor award. WEAKNESSES: He is unproven on a fast track, with his only two dirt starts having come on wet surfaces. Besides his race in the mud at Meydan, he ran second in the slop in the Pulpit Stakes at Gulfstream in December behind stablemate Tapwrit. Two other starts came on turf and another on a synthetic surface in Ocala, Fla., where he scored his only stakes victory in the OBS Championship Stakes, which is restricted to horses that exited the OBS sales. His deep-closing style also puts him at risk of traffic in a large Derby field. BETTING VALUE: Others figure to be much more fancied than this colt should he draw into the race. Anticipate odds of 30-1 or Byron King SIRE: Twirling Candy is a Grade 1 winner who won at distances from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. His most notable win came in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at seven furlongs, but he also picked up Grade 2 wins at 1 1/8 miles in the Californian and Strub stakes, and finished second by a head in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 1 1/4 miles. With three crops of racing age, Twirling Candy s average progeny winning distance of 6.68 furlongs puts him closer to the bottom of this year s class of Kentucky Derby sires in that category. His most successful runner is Danzing Candy, who won the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles to give the stallion his lone graded stakes win. Danzing Candy, from Twirling Candy s debut crop, was the sire s first Derby starter last year, finishing 15th. DAM: Sage Mist is an unraced producer of three winners from as many foals to race. Her first foal, Highway Boss, by Street Boss, was a stakes-winning juvenile at Pleasanton going 5 1/2 furlongs and won going as far as a mile. Second foal Alley Boss, a full brother to Master Plan, has raced twice beyond a mile in 11 starts and could finish no better than eighth. Master Plan is the mare s first foal to win at a distance longer than a mile, taking the OBS Championship Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on an all-weather surface. OUTLOOK: Master Plan s closing style hints that he might like the added ground, but the offspring of his sire and dam would suggest otherwise. 19 McCraken x-1 Breeder: Whitham Thoroughbreds, LLC Trainer: Ian R. Wilkes Owner: Whitham Thoroughbreds LLC Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr. Record: STRENGTHS: Other than losing his final prep, McCraken has done little wrong. He won his first four starts, including two graded stakes, and is the only entrant with three wins at Churchill Downs. His final workout April 30 received glowing reviews. McCraken hits the Derby in top form and likely will run the best race of his career. That would be no surprise, considering his trainer is Ian Wilkes, former assistant to Carl Nazfger. Both Derby winners trained by Nazfger (Unbridled, Street Sense) peaked in the Derby after losing the Blue Grass in their final prep. It s the same pattern for McCraken, who has room to improve in just his sixth start. WEAKNESSES: It is fair to question the quality of the horses he faced. Aside from Tapwrit, McCraken has defeated only modest company. Furthermore, he has run only one fast race, earning a 95 Beyer Speed Figure in a Grade 3. In four other starts, his highest Beyer is 88. McCraken was favored when he lost the Blue Grass, a race won by a maiden. Although a last-start defeat does not disqualify a horse from Derby victory, the Blue Grass was his first start against real horses. And he lost. BETTING VALUE: McCraken was favored (5.90-1) in the final Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool in early April, prior to his Blue Grass loss. The colt s Derby odds will be higher. Beyond impressive works, McCraken is a difficult read from a class perspective, though he has defeated 41 of his 43 rivals. Fair value is 10-1; uncertain if that price will be available. Brad Free SIRE: Horse of the Year Ghostzapper was known for brilliant speed that he could carry a distance, taking Grade 1 events from the 6 1/2 furlongs of the Vosburgh Stakes to the 1 1/4 miles of the Breeders Cup Classic. Versatility has been a hallmark of his stallion career, with runners such as Judy the Beauty, champion female sprinter on dirt; turf Grade 1 winner Za Approval; and, more importantly for McCraken, high-quality route horses, such as recent Santa Anita Handicap winner Shaman Ghost. Awesome Again is the sire of 2013 Preakness winner Oxbow. DAM: Ivory Empress never won beyond 6 1/2 furlongs, although she is a half-sister to Grade 1-winning router Mea Domina. Ivory Empress, whose career was highlighted by a runner-up effort in the Grade 3 Endine Stakes going six furlongs at Delaware Park, also is the dam of Grade 3-placed turf router Bondurant. The late Seeking the Gold is the broodmare sire of Eclipse Award champions Blame, Questing, She Be Wild, and Take Charge Brandi. OUTLOOK: McCraken is well equipped for at least middle distances, and that, added to his affinity for Churchill Downs, puts him on solid footing here. The start was his first around two turns, and he would seem to have reason to move forward in his second route attempt Saturday. He also gets the services of familiar hands in Tyler Gaffalione, whom he appeared to be quite responsive to in the Louisiana Derby. WEAKNESSES: He does not have his rail eye. He lost the eye before his career started, so he is accustomed to racing without it. From a foundation standpoint, Patch lacks the experience and seasoning of some of his rivals, with just three starts heading into the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby. He also has yet to win a stakes or earn a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure. BETTING VALUE: Patch will be popular as a oneeyed horse, but at the end of the day he figures to go off at double-digit odds. In a race that lacks a standout, he is one to use at least in the exotics for both the natural talent he has shown in his young career and the fact that he is fearless. Mary Rampellini SIRE: Union Rags, the second-best juvenile in his crop to Hansen, developed into a Belmont Stakes winner at 3. The high-class son of Dixie Union is off to a great start at stud, siring four graded stakes winners in his first crop, all excelling as the distances of their races have gotten longer. Three of his stakes winners are of the Grade 1 variety and at around two turns. All of his stakes winners are fillies, likely an anomaly, but for now one can wonder if he s a filly sire. Stakesplaced Patch is his leading earner among males. DAM: Windyindy was bred and raced by ownerbreeder Jim Tafel and trained by Carl Nafzger. Windyindy earned $119,624 without winning or placing in a stakes, though she competed in two graded stakes among her 15 starts. Windyindy produced Grade 2 Indiana Oaks winner Tiz Windy (by Tiznow) and she is out of the stakes-winning Unbridled mare Unbridled Wind, a sister to champion Banshee Breeze, who excelled at route distances. Windyindy s sire, A.P. Indy, won the Belmont. OUTLOOK: Patch has the pedigree on the bottom side to get the Derby distance, though the jury is still out if the progeny of Union Rags will be effective beyond a middle distance. 21 Practical Joke x-1 Breeder: Whispering Oaks Trainer: Chad C. Brown Owner: Klaravich Stables, Inc. and William H. Lawrence Jockey: Joel Rosario Record: STRENGTHS: Although Practical Joke hasn t reached the winner s circle this year, he is an accomplished, battle-tested 3-year-old with two Grade 1 victories. His résumé stacks up very well with shorter-priced Derby hopefuls. He showed a great amount of determination to win both the Hopeful and Champagne stakes in New York last year, and has the ability to adapt to most pace scenarios. Chad Brown is one of the best trainers in the game, and you can expect him to have Practical Joke primed and ready as the colt makes his third start of the season. Note that the Champagne victory came in Practical Joke s third race of the form cycle last year. WEAKNESSES: Although he is clearly a talented runner, many believe that the 10-furlong Derby trip will prove too demanding. All three of his victories have come at one-turn at distances ranging from six to eight furlongs, and it was somewhat disappointing that he couldn t pass longshot Irap in the waning stages of the nine-furlong Blue Grass after looming boldly at the eighth pole. With a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 92, Practical Joke s figures pale in comparison to those of the top contenders. He ll need to improve in that department if he s to win the Kentucky Derby. BETTING VALUE: Practical Joke is questionable at the distance, but he s a multiple Grade 1 winner in the right hands. Odds of 20-1 seem fair. Dan Illman SIRE: Into Mischief picked up a Grade 1 win in the CashCall Futurity going 1 1/16 miles, his only effort around two turns in six career starts. He also twice finished second in graded stakes at seven furlongs. His runners win at an average distance of 6.64 furlongs, putting him on the lower end of the Kentucky Derby sires in that category. His most notable runner is Goldencents, a two-time winner of the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile who also took the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby. Practical Joke is Into Mischief s fourth Derby starter, following Goldencents (17th) and Vyjack (18th) in 2013 and Vicar s In Trouble (19th) in DAM: Halo Humor never raced at longer than seven furlongs, winning at six and 6 1/2 furlongs and finishing second in a stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs. She is the dam of two winners from four runners, with the most active around two turns being Cat On, who raced half of her 42 starts at a mile or longer, winning three of them. Practical Joke is her only other runner to compete beyond a mile. He won the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at a mile and placed second in two graded stakes at longer distances. OUTLOOK: Practical Joke might have the talent to contend at the classic distance, but his best work has been and probably will be around one turn. 22 Royal Mo x-1 Breeder: Brandywine Farm Trainer: John A. Shirreffs Owner: Mr. & Mrs. Jerome S. Moss Jockey: Gary Stevens Record: STRENGTHS: A graded stakes winner this year, Royal Mo ran a deceptively good race when third in his final prep, the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. He broke from a difficult outside post position in that race and then contested a fast pace while widest on the track. Despite those issues, he was beaten only a length by stablemate Gormley. This owner-trainer combination upset the 2005 Kentucky Derby with Giacomo, a horse entering the race off a close-but-no-cigar effort in the Santa Anita Derby. They also campaigned Zenyatta and know how to get good horses ready for big races. A good-bodied horse by Uncle Mo (the sire of last year s Derby winner), Royal Mo has blossomed since being stretched out around two turns. He has tactical speed and should be among the early leaders as long as he breaks cleanly from the starting gate. WEAKNESSES: Royal Mo s big victory, the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes, came when he controlled moderate splits in a suspect field led by then-maiden Irap. Royal Mo has been inconsistent since that race, and it s worth noting that the only other time he shipped out of Southern California resulted in a disappointing performance in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Although he earned a respectable 94 Beyer Speed Figure in his first start of the year, he hasn t cracked the 90-Beyer plateau against tougher competition in his two subsequent starts. While the Santa Anita Derby featured some quality 3-year-olds, it wasn t one of the faster prep races of the season. BETTING VALUE: Royal Mo will likely be a big price on the Kentucky Derby tote board if he draws in. Odds of 40-1 seem fair for a horse coming into the race off two losses against several of the runners he ll face at Churchill Downs. Dan Illman SIRE: There s no debate about the quality of Uncle Mo as a sire he s inarguably one of the best sires standing in North America after just three crops of racing age. He s already sired a Kentucky Derby winner in Nyquist, from his first crop, and he s had a host of graded stakes winners around two turns. A trait in his progeny that has helped him be so successful is that they run hard and compete, even if they are moving way up in class with little seasoning. DAM: Royal Irish Lass was unplaced on the track. She produced Tara From the Cape, a stakes winner on turf. Royal Irish Lass is out of the Seattle Song mare Irish Linnet, who was terrific on grass and won $1.2 million on the surface. The female family generally produces turf runners. Royal Mo s broodmare sire, Saint Ballado, is a source of stamina and sired Horse of the Year Saint Liam, who died young but was a successful sire in his own right, as well as Kentucky Derby runner-up Captain Bodgit. OUTLOOK: From a pedigree standpoint, Royal Mo is bred to be able to get a distance in top company, though one wonders if his best days lay ahead on turf. 23 Sonneteer x-1 Breeder: Calumet Farm Trainer: J. Keith Desormeaux Owner: Calumet Farm Jockey: Kent J. Desormeaux Record: STRENGTHS: With 10 starts, Sonneteer and State of Honor are the most experienced runners in the field. The Beyer Speed Figures earned by Sonneteer have moved up as his career has unfolded; he earned a career best last out. The numbers indicate he is improving. His trainer, Keith Desormeaux, knows how to manage a top horse. Exaggerator finished second in the 2016 Derby and then won the Preakness; Desormeaux also won the 2014 Breeders Cup Juvenile with Texas Red. Kent Desormeaux, the trainer s brother, has ridden three Derby winners Real Quiet, Fusaichi Pegasus, and Big Brown. SIRE: Sprint champion Midnight Lute went to stud with the thought that given his pedigree (by dual classic winner Real Quiet) and his rangy conformation he would be more than a sire of sprinters. That generally has been the case, though he has not been a resounding success, having sired 18 stakes winners, just 3 percent of foals of racing age, from six crops. His best runners have done well at middle distances, such as Shakin It Up, Gimme Da Lute, Govenor Charlie, and Midnight Hawk, and his son Midnight Aria won the 1 1/4-mile Queen s Plate. But his only two Grade 1 winners both won their Grade 1s at a mile or less. WEAKNESSES: Sonneteer has never won a race. He would be the first maiden to win the Derby since Brokers Tip in Since then, all 10 maidens that ran in the Derby finished off the board. Sonneteer has raced in two graded stakes. He finished second at in the Rebel with a rail-skimming trip. He subsequently finished fourth in the Arkansas Derby. His class is suspect. A closer, he needs a fast pace and a trouble-free trip in order to hit the board. In recent years, the Derby pace has softened. That does not benefit Sonneteer. BETTING VALUE: A win by Sonneteer is not impossible. It is unlikely. But he will be finishing, and at 50-1 might be worth a token wager. A win ticket on Sonneteer is likely destined to become a souvenir bookmark. But for bettors dabbling in the vertical exotics, Sonneteer is worth consideration because he will pick up the pieces. Brad Free DAM: Ours is an unraced daughter of the somewhat obscure Half Ours, who stands in Louisiana and has sired no graded stakes winners in the United States among his 17 stakes winners here (he has a Puerto Rican champion who won a graded race). Ours is out of the high-class sprinter and multiple graded stakes winner Classy Mirage, dam of Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes winner Dublin. OUTLOOK: The sire side leans toward sprints and middle distances, while the female family has produced all sprinters. Sonneteer has too much to overcome in his pedigree to be able to get the 1 1/4 miles of the Derby. 24 State of Honor x-1 Breeder: Manfred Conrad & Penny Conrad Trainer: Mark E. Casse Owner: Conrad Farms Jockey: Jose Lezcano Record: STRENGTHS: He comes to the Kentucky Derby off three graded stakes placings, and while he was never close to winning any of those races, his form must be respected in a field with so many open questions. As a 2-year-old, he took a while to develop, needing five tries to win his maiden, though his connections thought enough of his talent to try him in a stakes race at first asking. His first six starts were on synthetic or turf, and he s shown to be better on dirt, running Beyer Speed Figures of 90, 89, and 91 on that surface in his last three starts. He s shown plenty of speed in his recent starts, and given the number of runners in this year s Derby whose preferred trip is stalk-and-pounce, it seems possible he ll be on the lead. Given the lack of wire-to-wire winners in this race recently, you can debate whether that s a good thing. WEAKNESSES: The barn has a poor record overall with 3-year-old stakes runners on dirt. Even after Classic Empire s Arkansas Derby triumph, trainer Mark Casse is just 4 for 86 (5 percent) with 3-year-old graded stakes runners on dirt in the last five years, with 34 percent of them finishing in the money and a $0.39 return on a $2 investment. While State of Honor shows solid form and figures, in neither category does he appear strong enough to be a Derby winner in an average year. His best hope is for a great trip on or near the front on a day when his seemingly faster rivals don t fire. That s a lot to ask. BETTING VALUE: He s a very difficult one to include in verticals, but there s certainly a chance he hangs around long enough to fill out the superfecta or super high five. In terms of the win end, fair odds are probably about 50-1 or greater. Peter T. Fornatale SIRE: To Honor and Serve is a multiple Grade 1 winner who made only two starts at shorter than a mile. He won four times at 1 1/8 miles, including the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes and the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby and Remsen Stakes. State of Honor comes from his sire s first crop, which boasts an average winning distance of 7.11 furlongs. That figure puts To Honor and Serve in the middle of the pack among the Kentucky Derby sires in that category, but he ranks the highest among other first-croppers in the field. To Honor and Serve s other runners of note include Steps to Heaven, a Panamanian Group 2 winner at seven furlongs, and Blueridge Traveler, who ran second in the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes 1 1/8 miles. DAM: State Cup is an unraced Elusive Quality mare who is the dam of four winners from five foals to race. The mare appears to throw to her sire in terms of distance ability. Her most notable runner behind State of Honor is Thingvellir, a Master Command horse who has never raced at shorter than 1 1/16 miles in 18 starts, all in Japan, including three wins. OUTLOOK: To Honor and Serve looks like he has a future as a two-turn sire, and the mare is capable of supporting that. State of Honor s pedigree shouldn t hold him back. 25 Tapwrit x-1 Breeder: My Meadowview LLC Trainer: Todd A. Pletcher Owner: Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and LaPenta, Robert V. Jockey: Jose Ortiz Record: STRENGTHS: After his strong performance in the Tampa Bay Derby, Tapwrit shot up Derby top 10 lists like Rhianna s new single on the Billboard Hot 100. There was good reason he was bet like a sure thing that day and rallied impressively to win by nearly five lengths, making the even-money look like a gift. At that moment, he looked like he d be value at single-digit odds in the Kentucky Derby. Previously, he d touted himself with a nice run in the Sam F. Davis Stakes. He was closer to the pace than usual, struggled to get a run at a key moment, and ended up galloping out past the winner, McCraken, suggesting Tapwrit had even more in the tank. Most recently, in the Blue Grass Stakes, he broke poorly and never fired, flattening out noticeably late. If you want to conjure an excuse, you could say he s a grinding type that just left himself too much to do after the bad beginning, but even James Carville couldn t spin that effort as a good race. WEAKNESSES: It s very hard to win the Kentucky Derby coming off a clunker, and that s what Tapwrit is trying to do. Trainer Todd Pletcher s struggles in this race are well documented, and Super Saver, his lone winner, came to this spot in much better shape in terms of both form and Beyer Speed Figures. BETTING VALUE: He s a very hard horse to price. In your average race, you might be able to just draw a line through the last race and assign a much lower number, but this is the Kentucky Derby. Fair odds here are at least Peter T. Fornatale SIRE: Tapit is a Grade 1 winner who never raced at shorter than a mile in six career starts. He won the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes at 1 1/8 miles and the Grade 3 Laurel Futurity 1 1/16 miles. He has established himself as North America s perennial leading sire on the racetrack and in the auction ring, and his progeny s average winning distance of 7.53 furlongs ranks among the best for this year s Kentucky Derby sires. His two-turn credentials on major stages are sterling, led by Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist and Creator, Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable, and multiple Grade 1 winner Frosted. Tapwrit is the seventh Derby starter for Tapit. Three of them Normandy Invasion, Frosted, and Mohaymen have run fourth to tie for the sire s best performance. DAM: Appealing Zophie proved a versatile runner, winning the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at seven furlongs and the Grade 3 Silverbulletday Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. Tapwrit is the most successful of the mare s three winners from five runners. The bulk of her offspring have raced primarily at a route distance, including Daddy in the Dark, who has raced at less than a mile just once in 23 starts, including three wins. OUTLOOK: By North America s leading sire and out of a two-turn graded stakes winner, Tapwrit was bred for races like this. 26 Thunder Snow (Ire) x-1 Breeder: Darley Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Owner: Godolphin Racing LLC Jockey: Christophe Soumillon Record: STRENGTHS: Class and versatility. A Group 1 winner on grass last fall in France in his final start as a 2-year-old, he returned as a 3-year-old to win a pair of stakes in Dubai, most notably the Group 2 UAE Derby in the mud on the Dubai World Cup undercard in which he surged to victory in the closing yards in a determined effort. His time for about 1 3/16 miles was 1:57.76, the fastest UAE Derby of the Meydan dirt era, a performance Andrew Beyer estimated as being equivalent to a 94 Beyer Speed Figure. WEAKNESSES: Winning a Kentucky Derby with as many as 20 horses is a daunting task for any horse, much less for one travelling halfway across the world. Last-race-in-Dubai invaders are winless in the Derby, with the best finish from a Dubai runner being Master of Hounds, who ran fifth in Beyond the long travel, many Dubai invaders have been converted turf horses, as is the case with Thunder Snow, and they have struggled to keep up against dirt specialists in the Kentucky Derby. BETTING VALUE: He closed at 23-1 odds in the final pool of Kentucky Derby Future wager, but bettors wager differently on Derby Day than they do weeks out. A foreign horse typically captures headlines and draws attention, resulting in odds a little lower than one might anticipate. Expect him to start around Byron King SIRE: Helmet, a son of Exceed and Excel, was a four-time Group 1 winner in Australia, with all six of his victories coming at a mile or shorter. All but one of his starts came on turf, with the lone exception being a 12th-place effort in the Group 2 UAE Derby on the former all-weather surface at Meydan. Thunder Snow comes from the second crop of Helmet, whose progeny boast an average winning distance of 6.63 furlongs, putting him near the bottom of this year s class of Kentucky Derby sires in that category. Thunder Snow avenged his sire s loss in the UAE Derby, this time on the dirt, to give Helmet his only black type on the surface. Thunder Snow is Helmet s first Kentucky Derby starter. DAM: Eastern Joy won her maiden at 1 1/8 miles in France, and it was the shortest distance she raced at in her four starts. She is the dam of four winners from as many runners three group stakes winners and one stakes winner. Ihtimal stretched as far as 1 3/16 miles to win the Group 3 UAE Oaks on Meydan s all-weather surface. Always Smile was a stakes winner at a mile on turf and won at as far as 1 1/16 miles, while First Victory is an English Group 3 winner at seven furlongs. OUTLOOK: Thunder Snow s success on dirt is an outlier in his grass-heavy pedigree, and the sweet spot for this cross appears to be about a mile. 27 Untrapped x-1 Breeder: Indian Creek & Jonathan Sheppard Trainer: Steven M. Asmussen Owner: Michael Langford Jockey: Ricardo Santana Jr. Record: STRENGTHS: He s made menacing moves in the stretch of his last four races, all graded stakes. Last time, the race appeared to be falling apart late, but it s notable that pacesetter Conquest Mo Money still handled him easily. He s in good hands with Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen calling the shots. He also might have the right running style for this test. Perhaps a more reserved, one-run approach can move him past tiring horses. WEAKNESSES: It s certainly possible that those late moves where he flattened out mean he just doesn t want to go this far. There also are horses in this field that have shown better late kick, including McCraken and Untrapped s stablemates Hence and Lookin At Lee. While Asmussen obviously wins races in bunches and shouldn t be considered a weakness, it is worth noting that he s in the Derby. All in all, Hence seems a lot more likely to get his trainer off the schneid than this guy. BETTING VALUE: On the win end, fair value is probably 50-1 or greater. He could be considered in the low end of verticals. Peter T. Fornatale SIRE: Trappe Shot has been on the verge of getting a top horse, but so far he s come up short. He has just two crops that have been age 3, so he has time. Trappe Shot, a sprint graded stakes winner by leading sire Tapit, has gotten middle-distance runners, though they have not done well in top company. He has sired only two stakes winners, Grade 2 Dwyer winner Fish Trappe Road and the winner of a New York-bred restricted stakes. Trappe Shot s progeny average winning distance is just 6.6 furlongs. DAM: The female family is laden with a number of top-class runners. Untrapped s third dam, Yarn, by Mr. Prospector, produced the good sprinter and sire Tale of the Cat, as well as highweighted English and Irish juvenile Minardi. Yarn s stakes-winning daughter Spunoutacontrol produced multiple graded stakes winner Fed Biz and is the grandam of the Grade 1-winning sprinter Joking. It s also the family of champion Johannesburg. While class abounds in the family, it should be noted it is sprint-oriented. OUTLOOK: The sire side provides little evidence that Untrapped can get 1 1/4 miles in Grade 1 company, and the best runners on the female side are sprinters. Untrapped does not appear to have the stamina needed to win the Derby.
