3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello everyone, It is PFHA Nationals time again as well as the beginning of great weather for trail riding. Time for all of us to enjoy our horses in whatever endeavor we choose. It is also time to renew your Mason Dixon membership. Details on how to renew are on the Membership form in this issue. I m very pleased with the new members that are joining Mason Dixon. Keep inviting your friends to join. The PFHA National show starts this coming Sunday with Bella Forma, Pleasure, and Performance classes and ends Saturday Sept 26 with the Youth and Championship classes. It will be a whole week of competition interspersed with some great events. On Sunday the PFHA Marketing Committee is sponsoring an event with the PGA golfer Davis Love III. They will be auctioning the opportunity to play 9 holes of golf with Mr. Love. Robin Ratliff will be the auctioneer. If you saw her at our Lexington show, you know she is quite the entertainer when it comes to auctioning items. It s that true Nick Burgos? On Wednesday is the Exhibitor s Party - A time to unwind and reacquaint with other PFHA members. Hope to see you there. Our Harrisburg show is right after Nationals on Saturday October 3. No rest for the weary. The show kicks off the 2010 show season. Hope to see you there too. The Annual Membership Meeting has been scheduled again for the first Saturday in November the 7 th. Fieldstone Meadows has graciously donated the use of their facility again. Last year we had a youth clinic in conjunction with the meeting. This year we are thinking about an Amateur Owner clinic that would include a segment on trailing riding obstacles and a possible judged trail course. The meeting would be on Saturday afternoon with dinner in the evening. Meat would be provided and we ask that everyone bring a dish as last year. For the clinic and trail ride we would be interested in hearing some feedback as to what could be included in the clinic. This is the year to vote on PFHA rule changes. The new rule proposals will be announced at the Oct PFHA Board of Directors Meeting. Virginia Foster will distribute the rule proposals soon after the meeting so you have time to review before you vote. The rule changes will be discussed at the meeting to get everyone s input on how the vote should go. More details will be forthcoming about the meeting and dinner. Mason Dixon will be well represented at Nationals with many members competing their horses. Good luck to everyone and hope to see other members cheering on! Travel safely and see you there! 4 ACTION FOR OUR MEMBERS PLEASE GET YOU FORMS TO SANDY Please get your forms for the trail and award program to Sandy so she has time to compile everything before our banquet. Please send them to Sandy Thomas; Forsythe Road; Sykesville, MD TIME TO RENEW YOUR MASON DIXON MEMBERSHIP Please complete to enclosed membership form for and send it to Karen Basehore. AT WHAT LOCATION DO YOU WANT OUR NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEET- ING TO BE HELD? Please let Lisa know where you want our next Mason Dixon Membership meeting to be held. This meeting we will be voting on PFHA rule changes. It is important to be proactive in the management of our PFHA. LET S GET TOGETHER AT THE NATIONALS Hard to believe that soon everyone will be down in Perry. After looking at the schedule of classes, it seems like the only viable option for people showing to get together would be the first Saturday, September 19th. So that said, why don't we try to meet at Ro-No's stalls at 6 pm to go to dinner. We will be stalled next to Greener Pastures (Robin Ratliff's group). You can call me at We can decide where everyone wants to go that night. Hope to see everyone there, so we can wish each other good luck and start the party off in the right way. Ann Bastian. A BIG THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR SILENT AUCTION A big thank you to all who made this year's Silent Auction a big success. Thanks to our many donors, all the folks who helped me set up, run the auction, and of course all the lucky bidders. We were able to raise close to $2,000. I'm just sorry I missed all the fun. Thank you everyone! Ann Bastian THANK YOU FROM THE PETRI FAMILY I want to thank all of you for your extreme kindness and help to expedite our departure on Sunday. My father died peacefully Sunday night. Although he ll be greatly missed, he was suffering from heart disease and diabetes for several years and his quality life had diminished. We feel he is no longer suffering and hopefully fishing somewhere in heaven!! Once again your help and support was greatly appreciated, Melanie PFHA IS COMPILING A HISTORY BOOK At the PFHA membership meeting, Dr. Margaret Fahringer explained the Historical Committee is compiling a history of the PFHA. They are looking for things that would interest the old timers as well as the new comers. They are asking members to send pictures, show programs, articles, and anything else of historic significance. Please don t send your original. Please send the copies to Dr. Margaret Fahringer at margaret52@me.com If you need help scanning in your original pictures or papers, just contact Virginia Foster for help or river_house_farm@yahoo.com 4

Let s get the word out to the members of your regions and committees and vote for you favorite PFHA Competition!! Mary L. Emmons, Executive Director, Paso Fino Horse Association, Inc., 101 N. Plant City, FL , Tel (813) , Fax (813) , Website: July 1, 2009 USEF Announces My Favorite USEF Breed Competition Contest By Stacey Meier Lexington, KY The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announces a new contest for 2009 designed to let USEF members vote for their Favorite USEF Breed Competition. The idea behind this contest is to award and promote the USEF licensed breed competitions for their efforts in running a show so well that exhibitors want to call it their favorite. Also, this contest gives exhibitors the opportunity to provide positive feedback about the competitions to the USEF. When we created this contest, we wanted to offer exhibitors the chance to express their opinions about competitions so the USEF could identify and recognize what exhibitors feel are the best breed shows in the country, said USEF s Assistant Executive Director of National Affiliates, Lori Nelson. At the same time, we want to acknowledge our appreciation for the USEF competitions who continue to have shows year after year. Having the exhibitor tell us what makes these competitions so special seems to be the best way to acknowledge these competitions. We encourage all USEF members to take the time to vote for their favorite breed competition. The competition rules include that you must be a USEF member to vote and you must have participated in the 2009 USEF competition you are voting for as an official, trainer, rider/driver, handler or owner. Also, you may only vote once at located in the lower right hand corner of the homepage. The contest begins July 1 and voting ends December 1, USEF Recognized Breed competitions will have a chance to win their respective breed category (11 total categories). All of the winning competitions will be announced at the 2010 USEF Annual meeting. From these competitions, two will be selected from a random drawing to win Grand Prize and Runner-Up. Each breed competition that wins as a Favorite USEF Breed Competition of 2009 will receive a framed certificate (or plaque). ASKING $18,000 GELDING FREE TO THE RIGHT HOME This letter is being sent out in an effort to help find a new owner for a Paso Fino Gelding that was sent here for some training. Moe is a 12 year old Pinto Paso Fino Gelding. He is registered, well gaited, and has had some good training in his past. He has also been through some rough handling that has left him with a couple of issues. Moe needs someone with a lot of experience handling/riding horses, and a lot of time to spend on him. His current owner bought him in the fall from a dealer who thought that Moe would make her a good, quiet trail horse. This was not the case. His owner worked with him on the ground throughout the winter- and when spring came went to ride him- and found out that he was not what she thought he was. She sent him here in hopes that we could fix him in a month or two. Moe came to me being extremely head shy, unwilling to stand to take a bit. This problem was one we could easily work with, and he in now good about having his head handled, and takes a bit easily. ( He will need to have this worked on always- as his problem was severe.) His other main issue is that he is very barn sour. He is now ( after work) a good ride in an arena- ( still not for a beginner/novice though) but not a reliable animal out on the trail. He is good with traffic, dogs, obstacles and the like, these are not the issue. When Moe decides that he wants to go home, it is not an easy thing to convince him otherwise. He needs a very good rider/handlerand we will give him away to an approved new owner. I do believe that he will make someone a very good horse, but it is going to take a lot of time and work, something that his current owner does not have. My time in trying to get Moe placed is limited. If after three more months ( starting the first of May) we have not been able to find him a new home, Moe will be euthanized. I do approve and support his current owners decision, as she does not want this horse to fall into the wrong hands, get abused more, or hurt someone. I also truly believe that he will make someone a very good horse. He is not mean- he has just had some very bad stuff happen in the past and has learned to be defensive. His new owners will have to come out and meet Moe and myself, and supply references. We want to be sure that Moe never gets lost in the system again- so we will require a contract with the new owner as well. Please pass this on to all of your horsey friends. If we network enough- we ll find the right person for Moe. Thank you, Nola Haupert-Keill rono@socantel.net 36

40 CLASSIFIEDS RO-NO Removal Service Equine Removal with Compassion & Respect or As horse owners ourselves, we care deeply about our animals. When one of our treasured horses dies, we lose a valued friend and companion. For many of us the experience can be emotionally devastating. Added to our grief is the difficult question; What do we do with the horses body? RO-NO Removal Service can be called in to remove your deceased pet, and we do it with compassion and respect. We collect your deceased horse or pony ( or other large animal pet ) from your stable, farm or vet clinic with our custom designed trailer, and we will always do our best to minimize your distress. We Offer; -On call service, 24/7. -Service throughout NE PA. -Removal of any size/breed pet- done with compassion and respect. -Braided Tail Hair Memento. -On or off site euthanasia with DVM. -Transportation to a crematory. -Urns available. -Pre-arranged or Emergency call out. The process of removing a deceased horse can be a very sensitive ( and sometimes distressing ) procedure. When preparing and loading a horse for removal, a procedure called winching must be used due to the size of the animal. Please be assured that we will treat your animal with the utmost consideration. Prices will vary due to location and situation, but basic fees for removal are as follows; 0-50 miles- $ miles- $ miles- $475 Please contact us for more information and complete list of services. 40

41 CLASSIFIEDS R & S STABLES PRESENTS TWO STALLIONS FOR BREEDING INTRODUCING: MONTECRISTO DEL PASO Montecristo del Paso is our newest stallion at R & S Paso Fino. He is by the legendary stallion Capuchino. Monte is a 5 year old performance stallion with very quick footfall and evenly spaced four beat gait. He is correct in his conformation and looks just like Capuchino. What makes this horse special is his intelligence. He is one of the easiest horses that I have ever worked with. When you combine his mental ability, tremendous brio, natural gait and great conformation it is the formula to produce great offspring. Get in on the ground floor and try Monte in your breeding program - we expect OUTSTANDING results. Stud fee $1000 for the first mare and $900 for every mare after. Booking fee $100. Contact Rick at rspaso@shol.com or (814) El Glatiador de Plebeyo is 17 years old. He stands 14.3 hands and is white (gray). He has been our main stallion at R & S and has produced everything from fino to outstanding pleasure horses. Glatiador is the son of the world famous Plebeyo. Glatiador has been a constant winner in the show ring the Classic Fino class. He has been used for many demonstrations and equine fairs. His offspring have also been successful in the show ring. He produces good size, intelligence, outstanding gait and great looks! I feel he would be an asset to anyone s breeding program. We have plenty of offspring that can be viewed at R & S Stables. Stud fee $800 for the first mare and $700 for every mare after. Booking fee $100. Contact Rick at rspaso@shol.com or (814) in R & S Stables is a full time training and breeding facility. Rick Shaffer is the trainer and will assist you with all your horse needs. 44 EDITOR S NOTES Sorry for the delay in getting this issue out. All I have to offer is an excuse, but it s a big one or rather a little one. I spent too much time enjoying my new grand daughter, Ellie. I ll try to do better next issue. I posted the results of the Lexington show on the Mason Dixon website. The results take up 36 pages so it was just too large to include in the PowerGlide. If you need a printed copy of the results, just call me at I m working with the PFHA Marketing Committee to do outreach to horse people. One of our initiatives was to post Paso Fino related videos on YouTube. Check out the videos I put up on YouTube at There is a video of John Lyons explaining the Paso Fino is the BEST trail horse. There is video of the four fino stallions that competed at Dillsburg this year. There s a video of Connie W s 3 day old foal. If you have videos and want them posted on YouTube, let me know. Another PFHA Marketing Committee initiative is to raise money so we can participate the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington KY, Sept 25-Oct 10, We are looking at participating in the breed demonstrations and purchasing a booth. More info to follow but if you are interesting in helping man the booth or participate in the demonstration, please let me know. Our first fund raiser is the Davis Love III event that will be held Sunday Sept 20, 2009 at our Nationals. Please see the flyer in this issue. I ll be attending the next PFHA Board of Directors meeting in October where the rule changes will be handed out to the delegates. I ll be sure to send them out to our members so we can vote and make sure PFHA is supporting our needs. Voting will be at the annual PFHA Membership meeting in January in Los Vegas. Take care, Virginia John Lyons video describes the Paso Fino horse as the Cadillac of trail horses. 44
