2 2010 Kentucky Derby Pedigree Analyses American Lion Trainer: Eoin Harty Jockey: David Flores Owner: WinStar Farm Breeder: WinStar Farm (KY) As befits a two-time winner of the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. 7 I), Tiznow has rapidly developed into one of our most reliable sources of quality stamina. All but one of his grade I winners aged 3 and up have scored their victories at nine furlongs or more (the exception being Tough Tiz s Sis, who took the Lady s Secret Stakes and Ruffian Handicap (both gr. I) at furlongs. In addition to being a source of stamina, Tiznow really came good in the latter half of his own 3-year-old season, and the majority of his runners do best with a little time. Ironically, however, the horse that first drew attention to his merits as a sire was Folklore, who scored her first black-type victory in the Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) over six furlongs in the summer of her juvenile career, and who went on to add the Matron Stakes and Alberto VO5 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies (both gr. I), to earn an Eclipse Award as the best of her age and sex. Tiznow s current 2-year-olds are from the first crop sired following Folklore s juvenile campaign. Because Folklore was out of a mare by Storm Cat, it didn t take a genius to work out that breeders with good Storm Cat mares were going to beat a path to Tiznow s door in That such a move might be worthwhile was borne out when Tiznow s son American Lion followed up an impressive lengths maiden win at Keeneland by overcoming some still-apparent greenness to take the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III) at the weekend. American Lion s dam, Storm Tide, was a winner at 2 in her only lifetime start. American Lion is her second named foal and first starter. Storm Tide is a sister to Weather Warning, who picked up some minor black type with a win in the Manitoba Lotteries Derby at Assiniboia Downs. She s also half sister to Foolishly, a Broad Brush filly who took the Snow White Stakes at Charles Town at 2. American Lion s granddam, City Band, was an excellent 2-year-old, winning four of her eight starts at that age, including the Oak Leaf Stakes (gr. I). She remained in training for two more seasons, but never again captured a graded event, although she placed three times at that level at 3, and took the Queen Breeders Cup Stakes at 4. American Lion s third dam, Wedding Band (by the Valid Appeal horse Mighty Appealing, a grandson of Tiznow s great-grandsire, In Reality) was another precocious runner, taking the Cameo Stakes at Laurel as a juvenile. Her dam, Ring of Steel (by turf champion Assagai), was half sister to four stakes swinners, and to the dam of another good In Reality-line runner in the Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) victress Really Quick. Folklore, American Lion, and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) and Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) winner Tiz Wonderful are the only 2-year-old graded stakes scorers to represent Tiznow to date. Besides their high-class juvenile performances, the three have something else in common: all are out of Storm Cat-line mares (Folklore and American Lion are out of daughters of Storm Cat, and Tiz Wonderful is out of a mare by Hennessy). For good measure, Tiznow also has recent Clasico Gran Promesa winner Golden Vivian out of a Storm Cat mare and multiple graded stakes winner Informed out of a mare by Tabasco Cat, another son of Storm Cat. While Tiznow no doubt benefits from the speed and precocity of the Storm Cat line, the success of Tiznow with mares by Storm Cat and his sons may well be influenced by a link between the pedigrees of Storm Cat and Tiznow s granddam, Lonely Dancer. Both are by sons of Northern Dancer, and Storm Cat s second dam, Crimson Saint, has considerable similarities to Sulenan, the granddam of Lonely Dancer. Crimson Saint is by Crimson Satan, who is a great-grandson of Black Toney, and her second dam, First Rose, is a Menow/Sir Gallahad III cross. Sulenan is a granddaughter of Tom Fool (by Menow out of a mare by Bull Dog (brother to Sir Gallahad III)), and her dam Blue Canary is a half siser to Crimson Satan, and like that horse, is by a grandson of Black Toney. It would be remiss to leave American Lion s pedigree without also noting that Tiznow seems to be developing something of an affinity for Carson City, sire of American Lion s second dam. He has grade I winner Bullsbay out of a mare by Carson City s son Lord Carson, and stakes winner Lady Chace out of a mare by Carson City himself. By Alan Porter Awesome Act Trainer: Jeremy Noseda Jockey: Julien Leparoux Owner: Susan Roy & Vinery Stables Breeder: Flaxman Holdings (KY) Predicting how a young horse will react to a change of surface 16 is never easy. Sometimes a runner may work impressively over the new footing, only to flop under the pressure of real competition; at other times, such a change may just transform an alsoran into a star. Awesome Act may not quite have lived up to his name yet, but his first start on dirt after six races on turf certainly looked like a dress rehearsal for bigger things to come. Sent off as the favorite for the Gotham Stakes (gr. III), the colt justified his status with an effortless dusting of his nine rivals. Granted, the winning margin was only lengths over a modestly credentialed field, but Awesome Act was under absolutely no pressure to do more. For Vinery, which co-owns Awesome Act with Susan Roy, the colt s win was surely enough to spark dreams of the future, for Awesome Act comes from one of the finest sire-producing families on the planet. His fifth dam is Almahmoud, who counts two of the finest sires of the post- World War II era among her grandsons; her stakes-placed daughter Natalma (by Native Dancer) produced the legendary Northern Dancer, while her stakes-winning daughter Cosmah (by Cosmic Bomb) produced two-time leading sire Halo. A third daughter, Bubbling Beauty (by Hasty Road), came up with French group I winner Arctic Tern, a good sire if not on the same plane as his cousins. Cosmah s branch of the family is represented by another exciting Triple Crown prospect in Eskendereya, winner of the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and Wood Memorial (gr. I). I). This is a line that is well proven on American dirt. Northern Dancer, of course, had no trouble with the dirt either, winning the 1964 Derby and Preakness, but he was a good stakes winner on turf as a juvenile, and it is perhaps no coincidence that the best modern branch of Natalma s family has excelled on the grass in Europe. Awesome Act is in the second generation of horses bred by Flaxman Holdings from the line of Natalma s granddaughter Coup de Folie. Sired by Halo out of the unraced Raise the Standard (Hoist the Flag Natalma), Coup de Folie was inbred 3x3 to Almahmoud. As Coup de Folie won the 1984 Prix d Aumale (Fr-III), one presumes her inbreeding did not slow her down any. It certainly did not hurt her in the breeding shed, where she threw five group stakes winners, including French champion juveniles Machiavellian (a very good sire) and Coup de Genie, both by the great sire and broodmare sire Mr. Prospector. Houdini s Honey, the dam of Awesome Act, is a full sister to Machiavellian and Coup de Genie reason enough for any stallion manager to start salivating over her son s potential. Trace the family a little further back, though, and still another top sire can be linked in Danehill, whose granddam Spring Adieu is a Buckpasser half sister to Raise the Standard. (As Danehill was sired by Danzig, by Northern Dancer, he was actually inbred 3x3 to Natalma.) And Natalma s family continues to breed on quite merrily, with French group I winners Way of Light, Denebola, and Orpen tracing to her line. Despite the close inbreeding to Almahmoud along his damline, Machiavellian did well with mares tracing to Northern Dancer, and this line-breeding pattern has also worked for his full sisters. Coup de Genie threw the best of her four stakes winners, 2003 Prix Marcel Boussac (Fr-I) winner Denebola, to Northern Dancer s grandson Storm Cat, while another full sister, Rafina, carried the line-breeding a step further by producing 2006 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Eng-II) winner Admiralofthefleet to the cover of Danehill. Awesome Act is another example of the same pattern, as his sire, Awesome Again, is a great-grandson of Northern Dancer. Sired by twotime leading sire Deputy Minister (by Vice Regent, by Northern Dancer), Awesome Again capped a perfect six-for-six season as a 4-year-old with an upset over Silver Charm and Swain in the 1998 Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I), an accomplishment that led to his induction into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in Since his retirement to owner Frank Stronach s Adena Springs Kentucky, Awesome Again has not been the most consistent of stallions, but his best have been very good indeed, headed by 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper and 2007 champion older female Ginger Punch. From the 585 foals of his first eight crops of racing age, Awesome Again has sired 276 winners (47.2%), 38 stakes winners (6.5%), and 23 graded stakes winners (3.9%). By Avalyn Hunter Backtalk Trainer: Tom Amoss Jockey: Miguel Mena Owner: Gold Mark Farm Breeder: Clover Leaf Farms II (FL) Backtalk s pedigree might not be a particularly flashy one, but 18 there is no denying he s classically-bred. His sire, Smarty Jones, came close to claiming the Triple Crown; his broodmare sire, Affirmed, is the last horse to win that coveted prize; and his second dam is by a son of Nijinsky II, the last horse to capture the English Triple Crown. After taking the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes (both gr. I), Smarty Jones produced one of the greatest losing efforts in classic history in the Belmont (gr. I), which proved to be his final start and his lone defeat. Prior to the classic, his 3-year-old season had brought wins in the Count Fleet, Southwest, and Rebel Stakes, and the Arkansas Derby (gr. II). He d started just twice at 2, taking a Philadelphia Park maiden by lengths and the state-bred Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes at the same track by 15 lengths. A son of Elusive Quality, out of a mare by champion sprinter Smile, from the Striking branch of the La Troienne family, Smarty Jones was the subject of intense competition from stallion farms. Ultimately, he went to Three Chimneys Farm in an unusual deal that saw the creation of a 60-share syndicate with a 50% percent interest in the horse being retained by his owners, Roy and Pat Chapman. That the progeny test is as merciless as the Belmont Park homestretch is borne out when we chart the course of Smarty Jones stud fee. He retired at an asking price of $100,000 in 2005; was advertised at Private for 2009, after his first 2-year-olds had completed their first season; and for the current season is just $10,000. The first crop actually produced just one winner of black type, the Puerto Rican grade III scorer La Equivocada, although we should note the best horse in the crop was probably the Darley Alicibiades Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Be Smart, and that there was also a non-black-type stakes winner in the shape of Sarah Cataldo, who took the Tax Free Shopping Distaff Stakes at Delaware Park. Backtalk is the first stakes winner from his second crop. It would be trite to state Smarty hasn t done all that his connections would have hoped since he retired to stud, but he does have some interesting elements in his pedigree, and let s hope that his current stud fee, combined with some shrewd matings, allows some smaller breeders to catch lightning in a bottle. It s appropriate that Backtalk s dam, Apasionata Sonata, should have produced the best runner for her sire to date, as the mare was purchased in foal to Pulpit for $325,000 by Brent Fernung on behalf of Cloverleaf Farm. Fernung as agent also purchased I ll Get Along dam of Smarty Jones for $130,000 at the 2001 Keeneland November sale, when Smarty Jones was a weanling. 4 chased Eileen s Moment prior to her son Lil E. Tee s capturing the 1992 Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Fernung mentioned that, while all three mares might have had different backgrounds, they shared a very similar top line and hind leg. The Pulpit foal that Apasionata Sonata was carrying at the time of her purchase her first turned out to be Bsharpsonata, winner of seven races and nearly $600,000, including the Forward Gal Stakes and Davona Dale Stakes (both gr. II). She was also second in the Ashland and La Brea Stakes (both gr. I). Apasionata Sonata s second foal was a Giant s Causeway colt that never ran, and Backtalk is her third foal. In 2008, after foaling a First Samurai colt, she went through the Keeneland November sales ring for $1.5 million carrying a brother to Bsharpsonta. If not as prolific as Bsharpsonata, Apasionata Sonata was a smart runner in her own right, winning four races for $155,535 and earning a black-type win in the Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf Stakes. Her dam, Express Star (by Baldski, a speedy Nijinsky II half brother to Capote and Exceller), was a tough and versatile performer, equally at home on dirt and turf, and won 13 of her 45 starts, including seven stakes, all at Calder. Apasionata Sonata is an interesting mare in that she has produced two graded winners from two starters, neither on particularly prolific crosses. Bsharpsonata is one of only two stakes winners sired by A.P. Indy-line stallions out of Affirmed mares, and Backtalk is the only Gone West-line stakes winner out of a mare by Affirmed (although he s rated TrueNicks B+ on the broad cross of Elusive Quality and his sons with Raise a Native). When I queried Fernung about the choice of Smarty Jones as a mate for Apasionata Sonata, he told me that looking at Smarty Jones, and noting he had little of either his sire or dam about him, he considered him to be far more typical of In Reality (who is responsible for Smarty Jones broodmare sire, Smile), and he felt In Reality would be a good influence with the mare. A little research bears out that Fernung s instincts were on the money, as In Reality combines with Exclusive Native (sire of Affirmed) in at least 57 stakes winners, including 23 graded and four grade I, Affirmed being the source of Exclusive Native in 14 of the stakes winners. Another strange thing hit us looking at the pedigrees of Pulpit and Smarty Jones the sires of the two graded winners out of Apasionata Sonata. Initially, one would not consider them to be bred in a particularly similar way, but in fact there are a lot of commonalities in their backgrounds, both having Mr. Prospector, Northern Dancer, Tom Fool, line-breeding to Bold Ruler through Boldnesian, What a Pleasure and Secretariat, and a cross of Secretariat s half brother, Sir Gaylord. By Alan Porter Conveyance Trainer: Bob Baffert Jockey: Martin Garcia Owner: Zabeel Racing International Breeder: Gulf Coast Farms (KY) As a stallion prospect, Indian Charlie was given every opportunity to succeed at Airdrie Stud, and the lightly-raced 12 son of In Excess delivered. His first crop had seven stakes winners, including two-turn grade I winner Pampered Princess, and his second crop produced nine added-money winners including two-time grade I winner and champion older mare Fleet Indian. Scores of stakes winners have followed, with most more geared toward sprinting or middle distances such as full brothers My Pal Charlie and Bwana Charlie. Now comes Conveyance, who is a proven commodity at a mile but will be asked to stretch it out another quarter-mile by May 1. A look within his female family reveals some class but not an overwhelming majority of two-turn ability to erase firmly any doubts of his getting more ground. Brands (gr. I). What Conveyance s female line does have is a long line of successful breeders putting together his family. Joe Albritton s Lazy Lane Stables bred Emptythetill, the dam of Conveyance, and second dam, In the Till, was bred by the Mills family s Hickory Tree Farm. Third dam, the Alcibiades (gr. II) winning Silent Account, and fourth dam, Pocahontas Stakes (now gr. II) winner Ciao, were bred by Alice Chandler and her Mill Ridge Farm. Silent Account, who was also grade I-placed in 1985, was the dam of the quick Gold Case, a stakes-winning son of Forty Niner and the sire of 20 stakes winners while in Kentucky and New Mexico, including grade II sprint winner Randaroo. Silent Account is also a half sister to Hadif, a three-time sprint stakes winner who has sired 24 black-type winners while standing in Texas. I) this decade. Since 2001, four stallions whose first runners were 3-year-olds have seen their sons wear the blanket of roses in the winner s circle: Maria s Mon (Monarchos, 2001), Distorted Humor (Funny Cide, 2003), Street Cry (Street Sense, 2007), and Birdstone (Mine That Bird, 2009). Dean s Kitten is genetically outfitted to raise that number to five and add the name of his sire, Kitten s Joy, to the list. Kitten s Joy, the 2004 Eclipse Award winner as champion turf male, won nine of his 14 career starts, including seven stakes that ranged from eight to 12 furlongs. His average winning distance 9.3 furlongs (a figure almost never seen among U.S.-bred horses) reflected not only his penchant for longer routes but his stamina. That should come as no surprise as he is by El Prado, a son of that fount of stamina and soundness, Sadler s Wells, whose offspring have regularly negotiated the classic distances across Europe. His dam, Kitten s First, is a half sister to grade I stakes winner Down the Aisle (by Runaway Groom), who also specialized at 11 and 12 furlongs, winning the United Nations Handicap (gr. IT) and Kentucky Cup Turf Handicap, respectively, at those distances. Kitten s First is a daughter of Lear Fan, who factors into the genetic formula, the line of Epsom Derby winner Roberto and Wac, a Lt. Stevens full sister to Bel Sheba, the dam of 1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Alysheba. Adding an element that can t be overlooked is Kitten s Joy s 6x5 inbreeding to Rough Shod II, the fourth 4

Stevens, and who stands at the head of a modern sire-producing family that produces classic runners such as Nureyev. Kitten s First s female family has its own classic connection. Her granddam, One Lane, is a half sister to Stop On Red, whose grandson Spectacular Bid was a near Triple Crown winner in 1979, having won the Derby and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) before being usurped by a safety pin and an unjudicious ride in the Belmont Stakes. Kitten s Joy is a half brother to grade I-winning millionaire Precious Kitten (Catienus), whose specialty was stakes from eight to nine furlongs on the turf, and to stakes winner Justenuffheart (Broad Brush), dam of champion juvenile filly Dreaming of Anna (Rahy) who parlayed her juvenile precocity to stakes at nine furlongs; her full brother Lewis Michael, who won the grade II Washington Park Handicap over furlongs; and Justenuffhumor, who won the nine-furlong Bernard Baruch Handicap (gr. IIT). While Dean s Kitten s female family might not be so long winded, certainly it has representatives that can stake their claim to a fair amount of racetrack acreage. His dam, Summer Theatre, never won beyond six furlongs. She is by the speed-oriented Mr. Prospector-line stallion Ide, whose best wins came at eight and 8 ½ furlongs. Summer Theatre s dam, Key to the Safe, is a daughter of the Forli stallion Key to Content who descends from the blue hen family of Key Bridge, a Princequillo mare and the dam of champions and distance specialists Fort Marcy and Key to the Mint. Her granddam, Safe (by No Robbery), was quite comfortable winning the 1979 Spinster Stakes (gr. I) at nine furlongs. With a quick glance, we can note she s by a son of Belmont (gr. I) winner and Horse of the Year A.P. Indy who has been perhaps the leading source of stamina in modern North American pedigrees since the turn of the century and out of a mare, Kelli s Ransom, from the Roberto line who has already produced a champion and Kentucky Derby starter. Kelli s Ransom was bred in Kentucky in1999 by Gerald A. Ford s Diamond A Racing. Ford purchased Kelli s Ransom s dam, Musical Minister, for $350,000 in 1998 at the Keeneland November sale. At the time, Musical Minister was a half sister to three stakes winners and her value would continue to increase the following year when her half sister, Pico Tenerife (by Red Ransom), would win a pair of grade III turf races for Eugene Melnyk. Not a burner on the track she ran second three times in four starts Kelli s Ransom got off to a good start as a broodmare, commercially if not competitively. Sent to the red-hot Distorted Humor in 2005, Kelli s Ransom delivered a late May foal in 2006 who possessed the speed of his one-turn star sire, but had the ability to carry it a long way, perhaps off the stoutness of the blood of Red Ransom and Kelli s Ransom s broodmare sire, Deputy Minster. Named Regal Ransom, Sheikh Mohammed s bloodstock agent John Ferguson went to $675,000 to buy him at the Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-old sale in Unveiled at Saratoga, the Kiaran McLaughlintrained Regal Ransom rolled to a wire-to-wire win going seven furlongs. Regal Ransom was so highly thought of, he made his second start a month later in the Norfolk Stakes (gr. I) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita, but faded over the synthetic surface to finish eighth. In Dubai, Regal Ransom was on the fast track for the Derby. After finishing second to stablemate Desert Party twice at shorter distances, Regal Ransom turned the tables in the nine-furlong Saeed & Mohammed al Naboodah Group UAE Derby (UAE-II). He was later the highweighted 3-year-old male at 7-9 ½ furlongs on the UAE Free Handicap. Sent to Churchill Downs for the Derby, Regal Ransom finished eighth. After a freshening, Regal Ransom returned to win the Sept. 19 Super Derby (gr. II) at Louisiana Downs. He finished off the year with another disappointing run on synthetics, an eighth-place finish in the Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I). Tracing Kelli s Ransom pedigree back through her female line, there is plenty of class. Pico Tenerife was named 2009 Broodmare of the Year in Canada and her two top runners carry the same cross as Regal Ransom and Devil May Care: two-time champion Marchfield, being a son of A.P. Indy, and stakes winner Congor Bay as a 3-year-old son of Speightstown (a grandson of Mr. Prospector). Kelli s Ransom s third dam, Aladancer, by Northern Dancer, won 5

6 three stakes and placed in 13 others and was the dam of four stakes horses. Aladancer is a half sister to Naval Orange, the dam of the longwinded Cryptoclearance (grandsire of Roman Ruler). Paul Robsham (KY) It s completely logical that Joyce Robsham s homebred colt 15 Discreetly Mine climbed the ladder from graded stakes-placed to graded stakes winner once he was given the opportunity to stretch out in his races: his pedigree suggests a route of ground is right up his alley. Second to D Funnybone last September in the seven-furlong Futurity (gr. II) at Belmont and second to Homeboykris in the one-turn mile Champagne Stakes (gr. I), Discreetly Mine took em most of the way while winning the mile Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) in February at Fair Grounds. Battling much faster fractions a month later in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II), the son of Mineshaft dug in and finished a tenacious fourth, beaten just 1 ¼ lengths for it all in the nine-furlong race. On the top end of Discreetly Mine s pedigree, there are few stallions standing in North America better suited to sire a two-turn horse than Mineshaft. The 2003 Horse of the Year won two grade I races at 10 furlongs and one each at miles and at miles. He s a son of 1992 Horse of the Year A.P. Indy (winner of the 12-furlong Belmont Stakes, gr. I), who himself is by Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. A.P. Indy s dam, the grade III stakes-winning Weekend Surprise, is also the dam of Preakness (gr. I) winner Summer Squall (sire of Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby, gr. I, and Preakness winner Charismatic). With three crops of older horses on the track, Mineshaft has sired 13 stakes winners including Cool Coal Man and Casino Drive who were in the upper tier of two-turn 3-year-olds in Discreetly Mine s female line also has a strong bent toward stamina. From an inbreeding angle, Pretty Discreet, the dam of Discreetly Mine, is inbred 3x4 to classic-influence Buckpasser. Buckpasser gives another dose in Discreetly Mine s pedigree in the fourth line of Mineshaft s family tree. Discreetly Mine is also inbred 5x4 to Tom Rolfe, another classic stamina influence. Pretty Discreet, a homebred for the late E. Paul Robsham, only won three of 14 starts, but one of those wins came in one of the most important races for 3-year-old fillies: Saratoga s 10-furlong Alabama Stakes (gr. I). She s been even better as a broodmare. Her fourth foal, Pretty Wild (by Wild Again) won two stakes and earned nearly $400,000. Her seventh foal, by Forestry, is Discreet Cat, a three-time graded/group winner and brilliant victor of the 2006 Hill n Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct. Her next foal is graded stakes-placed Discreet Treasure. Discreetly Mine is her 10th foal. Robsham raced Pretty Discreet s dam, the Believe It mare Pretty Persuasive with Nick Zito at the training helm. Pretty Persuasive was a $125,000 Keeneland July yearling product in Her price no doubt was influenced by the success of her full sister, Buryyourbelief, who won the 1987 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) and was second in Keeneland s Ashland Stakes (gr. I). Pretty Persuasive and Buryyourbelief were out of the Paul Mellonbred Bury the Hatchet, a daughter of Tom Rolfe out of a Northern Dancer mare. Mack, 17 has been considered a colt with a lot of promise from the getgo. From the first crop of 2005 champion 3-year-old male Afleet Alex, the muscular, long-striding colt was a $525,000 purchase at last year s Keeneland September sale, fetching more than four times the average for Afleet Alex s yearlings and he became his sire s first stakes winner. Given his own pedigree and racing performance, Afleet Alex s record as a sire should only improve as his first crop matures and gets a bit more distance to run. By multiple grade II winner Northern Afleet, a horse effective at up to nine furlongs, Afleet Alex was produced from Maggy Hawk, whose sire Hawkster set a world record for 12 furlongs on turf in the 1989 Oak Tree Invitational (gr. IT). The second dam of Afleet Alex is Qualique, a daughter of 1969 champion turf horse Hawaii who won the nine-furlong Demoiselle Stakes (gr. I) as a juvenile in 1983 but was never able to run back to that form. Afleet Alex was a good 2-year-old, winning the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) and finishing second in the Bessemer Trust Breeders Cup Juvenile (gr. I), but he was better still as a sophomore. Beaten a length for the prize in the 2005 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), in which he ran third behind longshots Giacomo and Closing Argument, he won the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) in dramatic fashion after nearly going to his knees at the top of the stretch in a collision with eventual second-place finisher Scrappy T. He was just as impressive if less dramatic in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), coming home seven lengths on top, but never raced again after developing an area of necrotic bone in his left front cannon that failed to respond to treatment. The distaff half of Dublin s pedigree is also reason to think he will be better with maturity. Bred by Peter E. 7 Mirage, a tough sprinter-miler who highlighted her career with a win in the 1995 Ballerina Handicap (gr. I) as a 5-year-old. Her half sister Missy s Mirage (by Stop the Music) also improved with age, winning the 1992 Hempstead and Shuvee handicaps (both gr. I) as a 4-year-old. Produced from the unraced Riva Ridge mare First Mirage, Classy Mirage hails from the family of Sunday Evening (by Eight Thirty), a modern foundation mare whose family includes 1968 champion 3-year-old filly Dark Mirage, 1969 champion 2-year-old male Silent Screen, European champions Indian Skimmer and Bluebird, and 2009 leading second-crop sire Medaglia d Oro, a multiple grade I winner who was just below championship class on the track. Classy Mirage, in fact, is closely related to Indian Skimmer, as both mares are daughters of Storm Bird out of daughters of the Bold Bidder mare Gray Mirage. Winner of the 1972 Pinafore Stakes as a 3-year-old, Gray Mirage is one of three stakes winners produced from unraced Home by Dark (by Hill Prince Sunday Evening), the best of which was the aforementioned Dark Mirage. Sadly, Dark Mirage dislocated a fetlock as a 4-year-old and eventually had to be euthanized, but Home by Dark also produced Dusky Evening, whose Nijinsky II filly Javamine became a multiple grade II winner before producing Java Gold. A handsome son of Key to the Mint who was plagued by bad feet, Java Gold nonetheless proved himself as one of the best colts of a very good crop, winning the Remsen Stakes (gr. I) as a juvenile, and three grade I races as a 3-year-old in Javamine also produced 1985 Doncaster Cup (Eng-III) winner Spicy Story to the cover of Blushing Groom. Another daughter of Home by Dark, Timely Tammy (by Tim Tam), became the granddam of grade I winners Timely Writer (by Staff Writer) and Timely Assertion (by Assert), both produced from her daughter Timely Roman (by Sette Bello). Generally speaking, the family of Sunday Evening has tended to throw speed. Nonetheless, it has repeatedly demonstrated it can produce horses capable of going classic distances when crossed with more stamina-oriented sires. It is now up to Dublin to prove himself a worthy heir of both sire and dam and demonstrate that he can go the distance with the speed he has already proved to possess. Beatson (MD) As a 2-year-old Homeboykris thrust himself and his sire, 19 Roman Ruler, into the spotlight with a one-length victory over a highly touted field in the Champagne Stakes in a one-turn mile at Belmont Park in October. With his victory he became the first grade I winner for his first-crop sire and an important cog in Roman Ruler s wheeling duel with Offlee Wild for last year s leading freshman sire honors. But in his first start around two turns, the nine-furlong Remsen Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct, Homeboykris finished a disappointing fifth in a six-horse field, beaten more than 10 lengths. While one race can make a reputation, it does not logically follow that one race should break a reputation. However, a juvenile horse s race performance, along with its pedigree, might set certain parameters for distance and whether a horse has the proclivity to get the classic distances during the upcoming sophomore season. Roman Ruler won five of his 10 starts at distances ranging from five to nine furlongs, with an average winning distance of 7.13 furlongs. Although he won the grade I Haskell Invitational at nine furlongs, the 10 furlongs of the Travers Stakes (gr. I) proved a bit too far, and he finished third, five lengths behind the winner Flower Alley, whom he had defeated by only a half-length in the mile Dwyer Stakes (gr. II) one month earlier. Pedigree may explain the reversal. Roman Ruler is inbred 2x4 to ROMAN RULER, dkb/br, 2002 HOMEBOYKRIS b, g February 13, 2007 ONE LAST SALUTE, b, 1995 Mr. Prospector through his sire Fusaichi Pegausus (one of Mr. P s few staying sons) and his broodmare sire Silver Deputy, whose dam is a daughter of the venerated source of speed. Unraced Silvery Swan, the dam of Roman Ruler, has also produced the similarly bred grade I winner El Corredor, whose four stakes wins came at eight furlongs or less. As a stallion, El Corredor has sired two-time Eclipse champion sprinter Midnight Lute. Also, Silvery Swan is a half sister to two stakes winners who never won a stakes beyond furlongs. As with the sire line, Homeboykris female family presents a mixed bag of speed and stamina, clustering toward the middle of the spectrum. His dam, One Last Salute, placed in two stakes at furlongs and won an allowance race over nine. Her sire, Salutely, a son of Hoist the Flag out of the champion handicap mare Politely, excelled at the middle distances both in the U.S. and in Ireland, winning the Coolmore Gay Fandango Stakes at Leopardstown at a mile. Her dam, Angie s Star, was a six-furlong winner by Lord Rebeau, out of a mare by Proudest Roman, a 2-year-old speedball who won the Hopeful and the National Stallion Stakes. Homeboykris is inbred to Never Bend 5x5. Never Bend, the champion 2-year-old male in 1962, seems to be another source of speed in pedigrees. By speed influence Nasrullah, Never Bend has sired such other speed influences as Proudest Roman, Iron Ruler, Triple Bend, and J.O. Tobin. With a family that has seemingly moved toward the middle of the speed/stamina continuum, Homeboykris might find the classic distances a bit beyond his comfort zone. I) moved to six weeks before the 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), many trainers eyed the new calendar with a jaundiced eye. Six weeks was too long a layoff before the first Saturday in May, yet too short to fit in another prep. As a result, when the names were dropped in this year s entry box, Rule emerged as the only graded stakes winner in the field, making him the automatic favorite. But the scheduling change had its bright side as well, as the lack of established names practically guaranteed a large field of hopefuls willing to take a shot at earning a sure ticket to the big dance. Two of those hopefuls were from the Nick Zito barn, both owned by Robert LaPenta, who knows a thing or two about having a longshot come through after his Da Tara upset Big Brown in the 2008 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). One of the pair, Miner s Reserve, was actually fairly well fancied at 6-1, but it was the other, 20-1 Ice Box, who sprang the upset. 7

8 Coming from last to first, the chestnut just got up in the final strides to nip another longshot, 29-1 Pleasant Prince. Bred by Denlea Park, Ice Box is from the ninth crop of Pulpit, who stands at Claiborne Farm. The leading son of A.P. Indy by number of stakes winners, number of graded stakes winners, and lifetime progeny earnings, Pulpit has sired 7.9% stakes winners from foals. His best besides Ice Box have included grade I winners Pyro, Rutherienne, Corinthian, Purge, Stroll, Mi Sueno, Sky Mesa, and Tapit, and the latter two have given notice that Pulpit is likely to continue the Seattle Slew- A.P. Indy sire line into the next several decades. Pulpit represents the successful cross of A.P. Indy over mares from the Mr. Prospector male line his dam is the Mr. Prospector mare Preach, winner of the 1991 Frizette Stakes (gr. I) and is from the family of Monarchy, a stakes-winning full sister to the great Round Table whose other descendants include Tale of the Cat (by Storm Cat) and Johannesburg (by Hennessy, by Storm Cat). Given this apparent affinity of his female line for Storm Cat, it should not be too surprising that Pulpit has gotten good results from Storm Cat-line mares. Besides the aforementioned Sky Mesa, Pulpit is also the sire of grade II winners Parading and Mini Sermon from daughters of Storm Cat, while Mi Sueno is out of a mare by Hennessy. Soundness can be an issue with this cross, but when it works, it works well indeed. Tabasco Cat, the broodmare sire of Ice Box, is another Storm Cat son, but not a typical Storm Cat when it came to the track. With stamina from broodmare sire Sauce Boat and a hardy Argentine family added to the miler speed typical of Storm Cat, Tabasco Cat won both the 1994 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and the Belmont over Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin. As a sire, Tabasco Cat did not quite live up to expectations and was sent to Japan, where he died in 2004, but he did get 25 stakes winners from 478 foals, headed by grade I winners Snow Ridge, Habibti, and Island Sand. If the female family of Ice Box looks rather familiar, there s a reason his second dam, Crown of Sheba, is an Alysheba half sister to 1985 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year Spend a Buck (by Buckaroo Belle de Jour) and to Jode (by Danzig), dam of 1999 Entenmanns Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) winner Hula Angel. Like a number of Alysheba s other progeny, Crown of Sheba showed some aptitude for turf, winning one of her three starts in England, and this aptitude was passed down to her daughter by Tabasco Cat, Spice Island. A foal of 1999, Spice Island apparently inherited the stamina of her sire and broodmare sire as well, as she scored her biggest wins in the Long Island Handicap (gr. IIT) and the Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes, both at 12 furlongs, as a 4-year-old. Ice Box is Spice Island s second foal and second winner, her first being the 2006 Gone West gelding Urban Jungle. Fans of deep line-breeding will no doubt have noticed that, like Spend a Buck and Hula Angel, Ice Box springs from the cross of a female line tracing to 1934 Prix de Diane winner Adargatis with a stallion carrying multiple crosses of Adargatis famous half sister, the great broodmare La Troienne. (Adargatis and La Troienne were actually closer than half sisters as Adargatis sire, Asterus, was a son of La Troienne s sire, Teddy.) This pattern can also be seen in the pedigree of Vindication, champion 2-year-old male of 2002, who traces back to Belle de Jour s great-granddam, Tellaris. In Ice Box s case, the pedigree is also reinforced by the pairing of the similarly bred Nijinsky II and Storm Bird 5x4; by inbreeding to Secretariat and Raise a Native 4x5; and by linebreeding to another great broodmare, Missy Baba, 6x5 (dam of Sauce Boat and ancestress of A.P. Indy). None of these crosses are close enough to have a huge genetic impact alone, but taken together, they point out a match between two highly compatible pedigrees that, in this case, have come up with a viable Kentucky Derby candidate. One could do far worse. Thoroughbred breeders are no exception, with 13 many reducing or even suspending their operations in order to make ends meet. Yet hope still springs eternal even for those with less than bottomless pockets, and sometimes hope pays off. Take Jackson Bend, who races as a homebred for Ocala-based Jacks or Better Farm. Like many another Florida-bred, he is by a relatively modest sire out of a mare whose credentials would probably not be considered fashionable enough to get her a place in the broodmare bands of most of the major Kentucky showplaces. But Florida-breds have long had a reputation for outrunning their pedigrees, and Jackson Bend seems to be one for whom the reputation is fact. The dark chestnut colt has now won five of his six starts, defeating impressive multiple grade II winner D Funnybone along the way, and became the seventh male to sweep the three-race Florida Stallion Stakes series. Jackson Bend s sire, Hear No Evil, commanded a $5,000 stud fee in the year that he was conceived. A Jacks or Better homebred, Hear No Evil has just 13 foals of racing age in his first crop, but it seems a safe bet he will get better patronage in Hear No Evil stands at Journeyman Stud. Five-thousand dollars is more or less the unofficial going rate in the Florida market for a stallion that offers solid but not spectacular credentials, and Hear No Evil fit that category well when he stood his first season at Rising Hill Farm in A rather lightly-made, wiry son of the good sprinter and sire Carson City, Hear No Evil won four stakes races and placed in four grade III events during his racing career. His stakes wins were at distances ranging from furlongs to nine furlongs and on both dirt and turf, and he was sound enough to make 37 starts over five seasons of racing. Hear No Evil s durability may seem somewhat surprising, given that his dam Nizy (by Cox s Ridge) never raced. All of Nizy s foals of racing age have started and won, however, including two other listed stakes winners in Home On the Ridge (by Homebuilder) and Ladyinareddress PULPIT, b, 1994 ICE BOX ch, c March 29, 2007 SPICE ISLAND, dkb/br, 1999 A.P. A daughter of Pago Pago, Nizhanee was a stakes winner at 3 and 4 and made 24 starts over three seasons. She was by far the best runner produced from unraced Winell (by Rising Market), whose dam, Doug s Serenade (by Royal Serenade), was one of four stakes winners produced by the Whirlaway mare Rock Drill. While Doug s Serenade was not in the same class as her half sister Lady Pitt (by Sword Dancer), the champion 3-year-old filly of 1966, she did have enough talent to win the 1958 Princess Elizabeth Stakes and place in four other Canadian black-type events. Although Sexy Stockings, the dam of Jackson Bend, made only seven starts, all at age 3 and all at Calder, she also has a pedigree that suggests basic soundness as a heritage. Another Jacks or Better homebred, she is by dual classic winner Tabasco Cat, who showed more than adequate toughness for the modern era by making a dozen starts at 3. Her dam, Lottsa Talc, was hardy enough to make Tabasco Cat look frail; the best runner sired by Talc, who sired any number of honest, hard-knocking bread-and-butter horses, Lottsa Talc won 16 stakes races (and 21 races overall) during her 65-race career, including the 1996 Barbara Fritchie and Distaff handicaps, both grade II events. Lottsa Talc came by her toughness quite honestly, for Talc won 17 of 54 starts, including the 1975 Chesapeake Handicap (gr. III) and Kent Stakes (gr. IIIT), while her dam Antilassa won four of 40 starts. The best runner produced from Lottsa Talc to date, Sexy Stockings ended her career with two straight victories in maiden special weight and allowance company, respectively, before retiring to the paddocks. If her racing career ended prematurely, Jacks or Better Farm cannot be regretting the fact too much now, as the mare s first foal, the Anasheed filly Garter Belt, is also a multiple stakes winner in Sexy Stockings third foal is a yearling colt by Black Mambo; she also has a 2009 colt by Awesome Again. While Jackson Bend s pedigree is not precisely regal, it is laden with one invaluable quality that sometimes seems overlooked in today s market: soundness. That s the good news. The bad news is the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) is run at 10 furlongs. By a quick sire with plenty of quality in his top line, Line of David s mare line has plenty of quality as well, tracing through his female directly to the dam of one of the most influential speed influences in the North American Stud Book. Line of David made his first five starts on synthetic or turf surfaces, winning entry-level races before switching to the main track for grade-i glory. His sire, Lion Heart, was stellar on dirt up to nine furlongs. The son of middle-distance specialist Tale of the Cat (by Storm Cat), out of a stakes-winning mare that made 78 starts and was by the rugged Mr. Leader, won the miles Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) at 2 and the nine-furlong Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) at 3. Prior to running second to Smarty Jones in a sloppy edition of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I; it was lengths back to the third-place finisher), Lion Heart was second in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I). Line of David is from the second crop of Lion Heart, whose younger half brother, by Giant s Causeway, is Connemara, a strong runner on synthetics based on his win in this year s El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) and third-place finish as the favorite in the Lane s End Stakes (gr. III). From his first two crops Lion Heart is the sire of 13 stakes winners including West Virginia Derby (gr. II) winner Soul Warrior and Azul Leon, a two-time graded winner last year at 2. The pedigree of Emma s Dilemma, the dam of Line of David, is laden with quality with both classic and brilliant strains. While not a star on the track, the Gainesway Thoroughbreds-bred Emma s Dilemma won only one of eight starts for Sabine Stables. She s a granddaughter of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew out of a Raise a Native mare. The sire line of Raise a Native, who also appears in the top line of Line of David s pedigree as the broodmare sire of Tale of the Cat, is responsible for the seven of the last 10 Kentucky Derby winners. Kentucky Lill, the second dam of the Arkansas Derby winner, was bred by the legendary Leslie Combs, founder of Spendthrift Farm. Kentucky Lill is out of Lillian Russell (by Prince John), winner of Arlington s Cleopatra Handicap and Churchill Downs Mint Julep Handicap for Combs and trainer Ray Lawrence Jr. Lillian Russell, a foal of 1977, is a younger half sister to Mr. Prospector (by Raise a Native). Mr. Prospector, who died in 1999, set a pair of six-furlong track records in his day and was the sire of 181 stakes winners. He was a twotime leading sire and nine-time leading broodmare sire. While Smart Strike is best known as the sire of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, who lifted him to two titles as leading sire, he has been much more than a one-horse sire. To date, he has been credited with 71 stakes winners, including champions Soaring Free, English Channel, Eye of the Sphynx, Portcullis, Gold Strike, Added Edge, Dr Arbatach, and Silver Streaker. He has sired everything from top sprinters to turf stayers, mirroring the versatility shown by his sire, Mr. Prospector. Whether Smart Strike will eventually match Mr. Prospector s total of 22 champions or highweights is open to question, given that he was 18 when the breeding shed opened in But he has plenty of good ones in the pipeline, and if he takes after his sire in longevity as well as sire power, there will be plenty more good ones to come. A plainer, less elegant individual than fellow Lane s End stallion Kingmambo his chief rival for top honors among Mr. Prospector s later sons Smart Strike lacks Kingmambo s sale appeal for European and Japanese buyers but yields nothing to any stallion out there in strength of pedigree. A grandson of the great Canadian broodmare No Class, he is out of Canadian champion 3-year-old filly and Canadian Broodmare of the Year Classy n Smart (by Smarten) and so a half brother to Canadian Horse of the Year and Canadian Broodmare of the Year Dance Smartly (by Danzig). Like his close maternal relative Sky Classic (by Nijinsky II out of No Class), he tends to get a horse that performs better with maturity, but Lookin At Lucky s precocity is not unprecedented, as Smart Strike s son Square Eddie galloped off with the 2008 Lane s End Breeders Futurity (gr. I). Lookin At Lucky does not have quite the distaff pedigree of his sire, but then few horses do, and he hails from a more than respectable female line. A scion of the family of Rose Leaves (dam of five-time leading sire and four-time broodmare sire Bull Lea), he traces his lineage through the Northern Dancer mare Sleek Dancer. Herself unraced, Sleek Dancer produced three stakes winners, among them the Mr. Prospector filly Sue Babe, whose son Sir Harry Lewis (by Alleged) won the 1987 Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-I). Another daughter of Sleek Dancer who distinguished herself in the paddocks was Sleek Belle (by Vaguely Noble), dam of four stakes winners, three of them by Mr. Prospector. Sue Babe s stakes-winning full brother Northern Prospect proved a useful speed sire, but the best of Sleek Dancer s three stakes winners was Sharp Belle (by Native Charger), winner of the 1978 Monmouth Oaks (gr. I). Sharp Belle was not as good a producer as her half sisters, however, and her best American runner from nine named foals was Regal Feeling (by Clever Trick), runner-up in the listed Bay Meadows Lassie Stakes. Regal Feeling got off to a good start in her own broodmare career, producing 1995 Pucker Up Stakes (gr. IIIT) winner Grand Charmer (by Lord Avie, and later the granddam of 2006 champion 3-year-old filly Wait a While) as her first foal. She never quite managed to live up to that standard during the rest of her time in the paddocks, but nine of her 10 named foals eventually proved winners, among them the Belong to Me filly Private Feeling, whose 2006 son Kensei (by Mr. Greeley) won last year s Dwyer and Jim Dandy Stakes (both gr. II). Kensei, of course, reached the racetrack far too late to influence the decision to mate Private Feeling to Smart Strike, but the mating surely had some appealing aspects. Not only has this female line historically done well with Mr. Prospector, but the mating is a reverse combination of some of the same elements that produced Dance Smartly, uniting a granddaughter of Danzig with a son of Classy n Smart. The fact Dance Smartly produced Queen s Plate winners Scatter the Gold (2000) and Dancethruthedawn (2001) to the cover of Mr. Prospector also suggests a favorable combination of bloodlines fortunate, perhaps, in coming up with a colt as good as Lookin At Lucky, but in Thoroughbred breeding, luck tends to strike where luck has been found before. By Avalyn Hunter Make Music For Me Trainer: Alexis Barba Jockey: Joel Rosario Owner: Ellen & Peter Johnson Breeder: Richard Schultz (KY) While some may believe that Make Music for Me s pedigree 9 suggests he is better suited for shorter distances, the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) contender has proved otherwise in his career thus far. It s safe to say that Make Music for Me, who hit the board in three graded contests ranging from furlongs to miles as a 2-year-old, and launched his sophomore season with a victory in the one-mile Pasadena Stakes on Santa Anita s turf course, has already displayed a great deal of versatility, and understandably so. While Make Music for Me s sire, Bernstein, excelled on the turf, where he captured the 2000 Coolmore Stud Home of Champions Concorde Stakes and 1999 Anheuser Busch Railway Stakes (both Ire-III), his dam Miss Cheers was tested only on the dirt, on which she won the 2000 Squan Song Stakes at Laurel Park. Even though both Bernstein (by Storm Cat) and Miss Cheers (by Carson City) captured their best races at six and seven furlongs, perhaps their son Make Music for Me s third-place effort in last year s mile CashCall Futurity (gr. I) at Hollywood Park, where he was beaten just lengths, suggests he may be able to conquer a longer trip around two turns. Bred in Kentucky by Richard Shultz, Make Music for Me was a $95,000 purchase at the 2009 Barretts March 2-year-old sale. Consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, he was purchased by Peter Johnson, who races the colt with his wife, Ellen. Bernstein, who won half of his eight starts and retired from racing with earnings of $173,120, is best known for his ability to sire champion runners around the globe. Among his 53 stakes winners are Japanese champion Goshawk Ken, and Argentine champions Storm Military, Savoir Bien, Storm Mayor, and Storm Marcopolo. In all, Bernstein s progeny have earned more than $15 million. While Storm Marcopolo won his best races at sprint distances, the rest of the aforementioned champions captured group I events at distances of a mile to miles. Most of Bernstein s best offspring have had their biggest successes on turf, but his daughter, Dream Empress found her niche distance at miles on synthetic surfaces, on which she won the 2008 Darley Alcibiades (gr. I) at Keeneland and was second by a length in the Bessemer Trust Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I). In addition to the success of Bernstein s progeny, another interesting fact about Make Music for Me s pedigree is the fact all three Triple Crown winners from the 1970s Secretariat, Affirmed, and Seattle Slew are represented. While Dawn of Reason was not a stakes winner herself, she is the daughter of Shy Dawn, a multiple graded stakes victor in the 1970s. Time will soon tell whether Make Music for Me, who is inbred 4X4 to 1964 Derby and Preakness Stakes victor and legendary sire Northern Dancer, will also be able to travel the Derby distance the way his ancestors could. Brands (gr. I) contender Mission Impazible. The colt showed speed and precocity as a juvenile last year and has displayed the ability to travel two turns while taking the March 27 Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds. Bred in Kentucky by Frank and Jane Lyon s Summer Wind Farm, Mission Impazible was a Book One yearling in the 2008 September yearling sale. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, Twin Creeks Racing signed the ticket for $200,000. Twin Creeks Racing was founded by Louisiana native Steve Davison. Mission Impazible was a Book One-type yearling being a son of hot sire Unbridled s Song and out of a stakes-winning grade IIproducing mare. Unbridled s Song, while brilliant on the track, was limited to 12 starts over three seasons. Winner of the Breeders Cup Juvenile (gr. I), at 3 he won both the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Wood Memorial (gr. II) and was the favorite for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) despite wellchronicled quarter-crack problems. He finished a close-up fifth in the Run for the Roses. As a sire, he has a long list of accomplishments and has sired 85 stakes winners 12 of them grade I winners that include 2008 juvenile champion Midshipman. He is also the sire of the 2008 Derby runner-up Eight Belles. His main stamina influence is through his sire, 1990 Derby and Breeders Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Unbridled, the sire of 49 stakes winners including Grindstone, who defeated Unbridled s Song in the 96 Derby, and 2000 Preakness (gr. I) winner Red Bullet. As a stallion, he stood for six seasons at Airdrie Stud and now resides at the KRA Jeju Stud Farm in South Korea. Mission Impazible s second dam, also bred by Triple AAA, won the Phoenix Futurity at Turf Paradise in Arizona in 1981 and, in addition to La Paz, has thrown five horses that have won or placed in stakes while racing in the Southwest. La Paz female line traces back to a family bred by Greentree Stud. Moulette, the fifth dam of Mission Impazible, is a daughter of the legendary Mahmoud out of 1946 Frizette winner Bimlette. Moulette was a half sister to 1963 Wood Memorial winner No Robbery. Bimlette, bred by Colonel E.R. Bradley s Idle Hour Stock Farm, is out of C.C.A. Oaks runner-up Bloodroot, who was named 1946 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. By Evan Hammonds Noble s Promise Trainer: Ken McPeek Jockey: Willie Martinez Owner: Chasing Dreams Racing 2008 Breeder: B. Kidder (KY) Cuvee was typical of Carson City s branch of the Mr. Prospector sire line. This is a precocious lot as evidenced by Carson 3 City s lifetime progeny statistics of 47% 2-year-old runners and 21% juvenile wins from starts and Cuvee was unarguably at his best as a 2-year old. The chestnut from his sire s 10th crop reeled off four wins from his first five juvenile starts, beginning in early May and culminating with a victory in Belmont s Futurity Stakes (gr. I). Cuvee s success in stakes races also typifies Carson City s progeny records, making him one of an impressive 9.3% stakes winners from that stallion s foals. Additionally, Cuvee s 6.13-furlong average winning distance was in line with his sire s other progeny who averaged 6.45 furlongs overall and 5.94 furlongs as 2-year-olds. It was reasonable to assume that Cuvee would carry on the speedy and early-developing aptitude that was so characteristic of his sire, and Cuvee was assured a home in Kentucky when he retired to stud following a brief sophomore campaign. Unfortunately for his connections, Cuvee s market acceptance was also typical of fellow Carson City stallions: while Carson City himself commanded a $35,000 fee for much of his tenure at Overbrook Farm, his sons appear to be capped at $10,000. Cuvee stood at that price for four seasons, first at Spendthrift and then at Gainesway, before being dropped to $6,500 after his first crop of foals failed to distinguish him on the track. 12 bring Cuvee into the top 10 second-crop sires, but in a market that demands early success, it wasn t enough to keep him in the U.S. Cuvee was exported following the 2009 breeding season and currently stands for the Turkish Jockey Club. While no other top-rated runners have surfaced for Cuvee, it still would be sweet irony for his lone graded winner to succeed at the highest level so soon after his departure. Enter Noble s Promise, who in a two-week stretch in 2009 captured his first black type at Presque Isle Downs and then followed it up with a victory in Keeneland s Dixiana Breeders Futurity (gr. I). While he hasn t scored since then, Noble s Promise has been on the board in several additional graded contests and has stalked fellow Triple Crown hopefuls in a series of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) prep races. His $738,000 in graded winnings ($823,500 overall) puts him at No. 2 on the graded earnings list and guarantees him a spot in the Derby s limited field if he gets there. In mid-april, trainer Ken McPeek warned that Noble s Promise is not a sure thing for the year s first classic contest after he was banged up in a rough Arkansas Derby (gr. I) trip April 10. If the stars align and Noble s Promise does enter the gates May 1 at Churchill Downs, he will have a significant challenge in addition to the 19 other likely starters: his pedigree. Cuvee s speed influence is hardly tempered by the bloodlines of The Devil s Trick, dam of Noble s Promise, and that is likely to make the Derby s 10 furlongs seem long indeed. The Devil s Trick ran only three times, all at 2, her best performance coming with a show effort in her first outing. Until Noble s Promise, she had failed to produce a standout runner, with only three modest winners from seven foals before being bred to Cuvee in The Devil s Trick is by Clever Trick, who never won beyond eight furlongs and whose daughters have tended to produce speedy offspring. One source of hope in Noble s Promise s near pedigree is New Economy, a multiple graded-winning half sister to The Devil s Trick. New Economy did exhibit the ability to stay in fact, her best win came in the La Prevoyante Handicap (gr. IIT) at no less than 12 furlongs. Much of her prowess at distances, however, could be attributed to aptitude inherited from her sire Red Ransom, an influence not present in the pedigree of Noble s Promise. If Noble Promise mends quickly and takes on the challenge of the Kentucky Derby, he is likely to be a pacesetter for the field. If he digs in and finds a hidden reserve that allows him to keep the lead to the 10-furlong mark, he will defy conventional wisdom and perhaps earn his sire a return trip to a Kentucky breeding shed. I) at miles at Keeneland a short way into the stretch but that was before Stately Victor went into overdrive and zoomed by him in mid-stretch to win by lengths. Despite the loss going into the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. The son of Kris S. and the paternal grandson of Roberto captured the Breeders Cup Turf (gr. IT) and defeated subsequent Horse of the Year Sunday Silence in winning the Swaps Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park. Paddy O Prado s female family stemming from Carols Christmas has been hot. Recent stakes winners stemming from her include grade I winners Cuvee (sire of Derby contender Noble s Promise), Pyro, and War Echo. Other stakes winners tracing to her include graded winners Olympio, Call Now, Wild Wonder, Will He Shine, Bien Nicole, and Fun House s half sister Early Flyer. Although the sire of some good horses in South America, including 2007 Uruguayan Horse of the Year Good Report and 2007 Argentine champion juvenile filly Inca Noble, Ride the Rails sired nothing memorable during his single season in California in The distaff side of Candy Ride s pedigree is less familiar. A half brother to Argentine group III winner Candy Apple (by Halo Sunshine), Candy Ride was produced from unraced Candy Girl, a full sister to dual Argentine classic winner City West. Candy Girl is by the Blushing Groom horse Candy Stripes, familiar to North Americans as the sire of 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor, and out of the unraced Farnesio mare City Girl. The female line entered Argentina from France in the 1970s and has been a good source of group winners since its introduction. Despite the economic downturn, Candy Ride (who now stands at Lane s End), has better than doubled his initial stud fee to $25,000, and with good reason. Although he has not exactly set the world afire as a sire of winners, getting just 84 so far from the 217 foals of his first two crops (38.7%), he has gotten 10 stakes winners (4.6%), six of them of graded class. Sidney s Candy is his fourth grade I winner, following in the hoofprints of NetJets King s Bishop Stakes (gr. I) winner Capt. Candyman Can and La Brea Stakes (gr. I) victress Evita Argentina in 2009, and 2010 Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) winner Misremembered. His forte appears to be the transmission of speed (the average winning distance of his progeny is 6.86 furlongs), but with the right mare, Candy Ride has proved that he can get a 10-furlong horse. The question with Sidney s Candy is whether his dam, Fair Exchange, is the right mare. Bred by Sidney Craig, the daughter of Storm Cat failed to win in five starts, and her sire is better known for transmitting speed than stamina. He does transmit quality, however. Currently fifth on the broodmare sire list, Storm Cat has 124 stakes winners to his credit as a maternal grandsire, including 2005 U.S. champion juvenile filly champion Folklore, 2004 U.S. champion sprinter Speightstown, and grade/group I winners Sky Mesa, Unfurl the Flag, Nobiz Like Shobiz, Randy Cat, and Rocking Trick. Storm Cat is not the entire pedigree for Fair Exchange, however. Her dam, Exchange, was a very good turf mare who won the 10-furlong Santa Barbara Handicap (gr. IT) in 1993 and the 12-furlong Orchid Handicap (gr. IIT) in A daughter of the good Nearctic horse Explodent, Exchange was produced from the Irish Stronghold mare Wooly Willow, a half sister to two Canadian classic winners in 1979 Queen s Plate winner Steady Growth (by the Nearctic horse Briartic) and 1983 Breeders Stakes winner Kingsbridge (by Icecapade, also by Nearctic). Wooly Willow, in turn, was produced from Crelita, a Canadian-bred daughter of 1957 Epsom Derby winner Crepello. This is a stamina-oriented family that has tended to produce staying horses. Sidney s Candy has yet to prove that he can handle 10 furlongs, especially under conditions when he is unlikely to be able to coast on an easy lead. But he has done everything asked of him so far, and that is all anyone can expect on the way to the Derby. I). Perhaps it wasn t that much of a stunner. He s by a sire that was known to leave little but a vapor trail in his wake in the stretch, out of a mare that was a grade I winner, albeit on the turf, at Keeneland. Also, as a $250,000 sale 2-year-old, it wasn t exactly as if he d slipped through the cracks. Bred by Adena Springs, Stately Victor has a pedigree that follows owner Frank Stronach s penchant for pure outcrosses in Thoroughbred pedigrees. It s hard to find complete outcrosses in modern pedigrees in North America, and Stately Victor does have one cross, a 4x4 to In Reality. Collect the Cash, the dam of Stately Victor, was bred by Adena and raced under Stronach s silks in a three-year campaign. At 3 she scored in the mile Rockingham Oaks in July 2000, then delivered her own Keeneland shocker, winning the nine-furlong Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. IT) as a 25-1 shot for trainer Joe Orseno. Her sire, stamina-strong Dynaformer (sire of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro), no doubt delivered a dose of two-turn strength from the Roberto line. Valid Appeal, the broodmare sire of Collect the Cash a son of In Reality offers some speed to her bottom line. There is plenty of quality through the progeny of third dam Cricket Club, a minor stakes winner at Suffolk Downs in In addition to Team Valor Stables stakes winner Worldly Possession, the dam of Collect the Cash, Cricket Club produced three other added-money winners. All three of them, Forladiesonly, Boyo, and Dr. Bobby A., came via the Nearco sire line. Dr. Bobby A. won the Cherry Hill Mile Stakes (gr. Clover Lane, the fourth dam of Stately Victor, traces back to a mare bred by A.G. 14 Ghostzapper was an awe-inspiring runner at any distance. Later in his 3-year-old campaign in just his sixth career start his effort in the Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) at furlongs was a sight to behold. Last of 10 after a quarter mile and 10 lengths off the lead after a half-mile, he won by lengths in 1: At 4, he toyed with the best horses in training winning the Breeders Cup Classic Powered by Dodge by 3 lengths while setting a track record at Lone Star Park, and then at 5 won the prestigious Met Mile Handicap (gr. I) by lengths in 1: Ghostzapper is out of Baby Zip, Kentucky s Broodmare of the Year of 2005, who is also the dam of grade I winner City Zip. Thirty Zip, Ghostzapper s second dam, is a half sister to the dam of 1992 Kentucky Derby winner Lil E. Tee. Because he was a bit late to come to the fore, it s not overly surprising his first-crop runners didn t fire right out of the box. Stately Victor may be just his second stakes winner, but being a grade I winner displays quality over quantity. La Troienne profoundly affected not only Bradley s Idle Hour Farm but the success of other star breeding operations into the 21st century. The latest beneficiary of Bradley s savvy could well be WinStar Farm with its highly touted 3-year-old colt Super Saver. A tail-female descendant of La Troienne, Super Saver has the credentials to do well in the Run for the Roses if past successes in that race for members of the La Troienne line are any indication. In the last 17 years three descendants of La Troienne have found their way to the Churchill Downs winner s circle on the first Saturday in May: Sea Hero (1993), Go for Gin (1994), and, most recently, Smarty Jones (2004).
