3 THE PORT FAIRY SHOW The first show held in Port Fairy was on 24 April 1854 on land on Bank Street. The Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association established in 1853 held the show. This association later split and after several name changes, one part became the Port Fairy Agricultural, Pastoral, and Horticultural Society Incorporated, its current name. The Agricultural and Pastoral Society of Australia Felix, was formed in New South Wales in the area now known as Victoria and held its one and only show in January 1840, in the Melbourne area. In the 1850 s about five agricultural and pastoral societies were established in Victoria. ADMISSION Show patron family tickets (2 adults and 3 children) a discounted cost of $20 and must be purchased up to 8 days prior to Show Day. These tickets are available from Isabel McLaren By post: send cheque and a self-addressed envelope to the Show Secretary, PO. Box 32, Port Fairy, 3284 Entry by ticket at the gate, on the day: adults $10, children (5 to 15 years) $5, and family $25 (2 adults and 3 children). Children under 5 years of age - free. Lucky entrance prizes: donated by our sponsors, will be drawn throughout Show Day. Note: Only official, emergency vehicles and cars with disabled pass, are allowed through the main entrance after 9am on Show day an OH&S requirement. 1

Registrations will be verified. 1. Registered/Racing Name to be used where available. Freeze brand number must be provided. 2. Qualifying Shows must be VAS Ltd affiliated. 3. Horse or Exhibitor do not need to be registered with any other Association or Breed Society other then Harness Racing Australia to be eligible to compete. 4. Qualifying classes will be judged ridden. 5. Once a qualifier is won, the horse is ineligible to complete in another qualifier. 6. All qualifying winners gain automatic entry into the HERO Series Final to be held at the VAS Ltd Saddle Horse Championship. 7. Riders to be aged 14 years and over on day of qualifying show. 8. To be judged as a good example of a Standardbred rather than a riding horse/hunter type with the following being taken into consideration: *Standardbred Qualities *Conformation *Manners, paces and performance *Racing related injuries and/or blemishes are permitted. 9. The Following Classes are open to all age riders, with the results from Classes 40cm 50cm, 60cm 70cm and 80cm, being counted towards the South West Agricultural Shows Interschool Show jumping Aggregate Award. To the exhibitor gaining the most points in the CHAMPION DAIRY COW class, the points allocated are 1st 5 points, 2nd 2 points, and 3rd 1 point. All points are counted. To the exhibitor gaining the most points in the CHAMPION DAIRY COW OR HEIFER Class - 5 for the CHAMPION and 2 for the RESERVE CHAMPION. Points only for the CHAMPION will be counted unless there is an equal count of two or more exhibits, and then only the points of the RESERVE CHAMPION have tied. The Society reserves the right to check the identity of the winning exhibitor. 13

VAS open rich fruit cake competition Recipe - The following recipe is compulsory for all entrants. 250g sultanas, 250g chopped raisins, 250g currants, 125g chopped mixed peel, 90g chopped red glace cherries, 90g chopped blanched almonds, 1/3 cup brandy or sherry, 250g plain flour, 60g SR flour, ¼ tspn grated nutmeg, ½ tspn ground ginger, ½ tspn ground cloves, 250g butter, 250gbrown sugar, ½ tspn lemon essence or finely grated lemon rind, ½ tspn almond essence, ½ tspn Vanilla essence & four large eggs. method - Mix all fruit & nuts together and sprinkle with brandy or sherry, cover & leave for one hour minimum or preferably overnight. Sift together flour & spices. Cream together the butter & sugar & add essences. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then alternately the flour & fruit mixtures. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon. Place mixture in a prepared 20cm square straight sided, square cornered tin and bake in a slow oven for approximately 3 ½ to 4 hours. Allow cake to cool in tin. Hot Tip: To ensure uniformity & depending upon the size, it is suggested that raisins be snipped into 2 or 3 pieces, cherries into 4 to 6 pieces and almonds into 3 or 4 pieces Regulations - An exhibitor having won at a show will bake another cake for entry in the group final. Recipe - 375g mixed fruit, ¾ cup of brown sugar, one teaspoon of mixed spice, ½ cup water, 125g butter, ½ tspn bi-carbonate soda, ½ cup of sherry, two eggs lightly beaten, two tablespoons of marmalade, one cup SR flour, one cup plain flour, ¼ teaspoon of salt. method - Place the mixed fruit, sugar, spices, water, and butter in large saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for three minutes, then remove from stove, add bi carb soda, and allow to cool. Add the sherry, eggs, and marmalade, mixing well. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients, then place in a greased and lined 20cm round cake tin.bake in a moderately slow oven for 1-½ hours or until cooked when tested. Regulations: see event H40 above. 39 Section P RURAL AMBASSADOR AWARD This competition is administered by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria Ltd. (RAS), with assistance from Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd. (VAS). Judge: TBA Chief Steward: TBA The judge s decision in all events is final. Entries for events P1 and P2 will be interviewed and judged by a panel of members set up by the Show Society committee. The winner will be presented to the public at 1pm on Show day. If there are not enough entrants in the competitions, the Society reserves the right to choose suitable candidates as Show Ambassador or Junior Show Ambassador to represent the Society at the Group Finals. Show ambassador Entries close noon Saturday 4th November Aims of the Award: To highlight the talent, creativity, and ingenuity of young rural Victorians and in doing so encourage entrants to be role models across local communities. To encourage and reward enthusiastic, skillful, and industrious young people living or being involved in rural environments. To assist all entrants through their participation, to develop strong communication and leadership qualities and to directly assist the winner through the support of a bursary. To enable the applicant to gain greater proficiency in their chosen field and to develop the applicant s stature and reputation in that chosen field. General conditions of entry: Entry is via the official application form to be completed and signed by the applicant. Open to people between the ages of 20 and 30 years as at 01 May of the year of the State final. Finalists may be involved in a rural or agricultural based industry or be associated with a Show Society but do not necessarily need to reside in a rural community. If successful at Group level, participants must attend the State Final during the Royal Melbourne Show and all judging as requested. Announcement of the State winner will be made during the Royal Melbourne Show. The State winner is required to represent Victoria in the National finals. The Committee will not enter into any correspondence in relation to selection and the judges decision is final. An unsuccessful applicant may re-apply in following years providing they meet the guidelines set out. There will be no joint winners. If a final decision cannot be made, advice is to be sought from the Chairperson of the Youth Affairs Committee. All finalists will be invited to join an RAS Committee of their choice for the 12 months following the competition. Previous State winners are not eligible. Certificates will be given to winners at local agricultural shows. 37

40 Group winners will receive a certificate, RAS membership, and be provided with an official jacket to wear at the State final at the Royal Melbourne Show. The State final winner will receive a major prize and an opportunity to compete in the national finals. Rural & General Knowledge 20 points - demonstrate a sound knowledge of both rural and community issues - show how being involved in this competition will directly further their personal development, community involvement and career or business path. Ambitions/Goals 10 points - share their future aspirations and goals on a personal, business and community level - how do they see themselves advancing in their area of interest. Style, Grooming and Deportment 10 points - present themselves well smart, casual tailored clothing - show a high level of selfconfidence and an ability to interact with persons from a variety of backgrounds. 48 PORT FAIRY SHOW SOCIETY RULES AND CONDITIONS 1. Show Day entrance fees are set by the Committee and are published in the front of this program. 2. In no case will a prize be awarded unless the exhibit is deemed worthy. The attention of the judges is drawn to this rule. 3. The Head Steward has the right to refuse any entry if the Show rules or guidelines are not met by the exhibitor. 4. All exhibits must be the property of the exhibitor 14 days before the Show. 5. All livestock must be free from vermin and disease. Nonobservance will be noted by the judges. 6. No exhibit will be moved once penned until 3.30pm or at the Chief Steward s discretion. 7. Date of birth of young cattle will be given at time of entry, where not shown, exhibits appearing overage will not be judged. 8. All entries must be lodged on Show Society entry forms with the Secretary by the date shown and must be accompanied by the correct fee. Postage stamps will not be accepted. 9. Implements may be exhibited by owner, manufacturer, or agent. 10. The Society has the right to remove any person proved to their satisfaction to be guilty of insulting behaviour to a judge or steward or any other improper conduct on the Show grounds. The committee may also disqualify the offender from exhibiting at the Society for a term determined by the committee. 11. Should the Society disqualify any exhibitor the disqualification may be endorsed by the South Western Group of VAS. The exhibitor may have the right of appeal if such appeal is lodged within three days of the Show. Such appeal shall be heard by a representative of VAS whose decision will be final. 12. Motor vehicles, including trucks, stock transports, and horse floats shall be parked as directed by the Society s parking attendants. Failure to comply with this rule will result in a request that the driver remove the vehicle from the Showgrounds immediately. 13. Protests based on non-compliance of conditions of the prize list or otherwise must be lodged with the Secretary before 5pm on the day of the Show. A deposit of $50.00 must accompany the protest as a guarantee, which if the protest is deemed frivolous shall be forfeited. The decision of the committee shall be final. 14. All prize cheques must be presented to a bank within two weeks of the Show. 15. All prize winners in horse and cattle sections must be taken on parade if such parade is organized. Exhibitors who fail to comply with this rule may be liable to forfeit prize money. 16. The Society retains the right to delete or alter any section of this schedule and programme. 17. Intermediate rider means any rider who has won a first, second or third placing at a Royal Show Novice Class but not won an Open Class. 18.
