1 WORKOUT REPORTS Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch will watch workouts every morning during the Saratoga meet and pass along key observations for horseplayers. BY MIKE WELSCH CAPE GLORY, a lightly raced 3yo trained by Ian Wilkes, finished extremely well, completing the final quarter of a :49.15 half-mile drill in :24.03 without need of urging, galloped out another eighth-mile into the turn in :13 on July 18. DECODER, a son of War Front, was slightly best of a pair of Shug McGaughey-trained babies from the gate on July 18, breezing five furlongs in :47.74 and galloping out five-eighths in 1: GOODTIME BOY, a 3-year-old New York-bred claimed by trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. for $25,000 in April, sizzled four furlongs in :46.07, posting even 23-second quarter-mile splits before galloping out five furlongs in :58.59 over the main track on July 18. He continues to look razor sharp. CARRIED INTEREST, arguably the most impressive 2-year-old maiden winner in New York thus far this summer, was kept on his toes breezing a very easy half-mile in :49.72 from the threeeighths pole into the turn on July 19. Speedy colt is pointing for the Saratoga Special later this month. AWESOME WEEKEND, a New York-bred son of Any Given Saturday, ran well in his debut and looks poised to graduate soon after working five furlongs in 1:02.23 on July 19, shading 24 seconds for his final quarter-mile while not being asked to the wire. SPA BABIES BY DAN ILLMAN Welcome to Spa Babies! I ll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet and hope for a tidy profit. In past years, I would list the stats for each horse before writing up my analysis, selections, and wagering strategy. In order to streamline the content, this year s Spa Babies will showcase written analyses of each juvenile race. Each analysis will include relevant statistical information. Following the analysis, top three selections and wagering strategy will be provided. RACE 3 1. WINE GLOW, a $250,000 yearling by two-time Breeders Cup Classic winner Tiznow (87-617, 14% with juveniles), is the first starter out of Cool Storm, an unraced Storm Cat dam that sold for a million dollars as a yearling and is a full sister to Haskell winner Bluegrass Cat (5-11, 1.7M, 3-4 at two, 1-2 sprinting) and stakes-winner Sonoma Cat (3-10, 132K, 2-3 in dirt sprints). Cool Storm is also a half-sister to Prairie Meadows Cornhusker winner Lord of the Game (8-18, 543K) and stakes-placed sprinter Cal Nation (3-9, 127K, 3-6 in dirt sprints). Trainer Wayne Lukas is (6%, $1.40 ROI) over the past five years with juveniles (11-133, 8%, $2.35 ROI at Saratoga). Wine Glow ran into two next-out winners in her career debut. Blueeyesintherein, the winner of that race, returned to take the Grade 3 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs with a 69 Beyer while fifth-finisher Wildcat Angie graduated with a 77 Beyer at Churchill on June 8. Wide in both starts, she draws a tough inside post position this afternoon and faces some promising youngsters. 2. LIGNITE, a half-brother to juvenile stakeswinner Backdoor Kenny (2-3, 74K, all races sprinting at two), is a $35,000 yearling purchase by undefeated Saratoga Special winner Run Away and Hide (3-3, 224K, all races sprinting at two, 1-14, 7% with juveniles from his first crop of 2012) out of an unraced dam (cost $85,000 as a yearling) that has foaled a winner from two runners (1-2 with 2yos, 1-2 with sprinters). Showed high speed against males last-out in a Belmont maiden won by Todd Pletcher-trained firster Rose Junction (88 Beyer). The dam is a half-sister to juvenile stakes-winner Mountain Range (8-39, 428K, 3-7 at two, 3-16 sprinting) and juvenile stakes-winning sprinter Royal Vindication (2-13, 140K, 2-5 at two, 2-10 sprinting), and is a full sister to multiple stakes-placed Mrs Petoski (5-19, 148K, 1-3 at two, 0-3 in dirt sprints). Trainer Wesley Ward is (31%, $1.84 ROI) over the past five years with juveniles $2.04 ROI with similar runners at Saratoga). Lignite drops back in with fillies, but she failed to take advantage of an inside, speed-favoring track last time out. Still, barring a quick firster, she looms a dangerous early presence. 3. KIMONO was bought back for $80,000 as a yearling, but sold for $550,000 earlier this year
2 after breezing a furlong in 10.2 seconds. Kauai Katie must deal with an intimidating inside post, but don t be surprised if this one shows good early speed. 2. LENDEROFLASTRESORT, bred in Florida, is a half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Bling (5-37, 97K, 1-5 at two, 4-28 sprinting) and multiple stakes-winner Pashito the Che (8-23, 568K, 1-4 at two, 7-19 sprinting). Like Charming Becky, Kansas finished behind the promising Can t Explain at Belmont, but Kansas did stumble leaving the gate that afternoon. With an alert break, Kansas can be a strong forward factor here. 6. RUBY LIPS, bred in Ontario, is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winner Like a Gem (6-18, 554K, 1-3 at two, won debut, 2-6 sprinting), stakes-winning sprinter Win and Reign (3-36, 212K, 1-5 at two, 3-31 sprinting), and multiple Grade 3-placed router Cool Gator (1-30, 299K, 1-5 at two, 0-1 sprinting). The June 12, June 18 workouts match Dutrow s juvenile filly Minx (finished fourth in MSW debut at Belmont on July 4 with 45 Beyer). The July 12 workout matches Dutrow s 4-year-old Isn t He Perfect (best Beyer of 99). She seems to be picking up the pace in recent drills. 7. GARMENTOS GIRL, an $110,000 short yearling buyback, sold for $250,000 as a yearling. The June 4 workout matches McGaughey s 6-year-old Hymn Book (finished second in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont on July 7 with 104 Beyer). The July 14 workout matches McGaughey s 3-yearold filly Scampering (66 Beyer top). Well-bred with interesting workouts, but barn sometimes gives their charges a race before they fire their best. 8. MERKADONA sold for $10,000 as a weanling before being purchased for $33,000 last year. The first-crop sire won the Forego Handicap (6-14, 580K, 1-3 at two, 4-10 sprinting) and is 0-4 with juvenile debut runners. The unplaced dam (0-2, 0-2 at two, 0-1 sprinting) has foaled one winner from one runner (0-1 sprinting). The stakes-placed sire is (13%) with juveniles and the unraced dam foaled three winners from five runners (2-4 with 2yos, 3-5 with sprinters). The third dam is juvenile stakes-placed sprinter One for Smoke (2-17, 27K, 1-8 at two, 2-15 sprinting). Trainer Matthew Peebles is 0-8 over the past five years with second-time juveniles. 4 1. Kauai Katie 2. Garmentos Girl 3. Lenderoflastresort Kauai Katie - Garmentos Girl EXACTA Kauai Katie - Lenderoflastresort EXACTA RACE 9 6 Furlongs Schuylerville Stakes (G3) Purse $150, SWEET SHIRLEY MAE, listed as a vet scratch on June 11, is a $60,000 yearling out of stakeswinning turf performer Joyful Chaos (5-17, 235K, 0-3 sprinting). She was well-prepared by juvenile guru Wesley Ward for her debut against males in the slop at Belmont and was flattered when the runner-up, Bern Identity, returned to graduate by 13 3/4 lengths with an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. Sweet Shirley Mae drew a tough inside post and may face several pace challengers from her outside. Ward is 1-9 (11%, $2.31 ROI) over the past five years with second-out juvenile maiden winners stepping up to tackle graded foes. 2. BABY J, a $37,000 yearling that was bought back for $65,000 in March, was purchased privately following her 84-Beyer debut at Belmont. She went gate-to-wire that day, but got away with an easy opening two furlongs and just held on at the wire. She was rambunctious behind the starting gate that afternoon so you may want to take a look at how she s behaving in the paddock and post parade prior to the Schuylerville. She is by J Be K, a first-crop stallion that won the Woody Stephens Stakes (5-9, 440K, 1-1 at two, 5-7 sprinting) and is a half-sister to stakes-winning turf performer Laureate Conductor (4-25, 297K) and stakes-placed sprinter Que Posse (5-12, 193K, 5-11 sprinting). She owns the best Beyer Speed Figure, but may have to go faster in the early stages. Now with Richard Dutrow Jr., she can t be ignored. 3. BROWN EYES BLUE, a $70,000 yearling that resold for $180,000 in April, is from the first crop of the popular Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown (7-8, 3.6M, 1-1 at two). The winless dam is a half-sister to Mac Diarmida Handicap winner Hotstufanthensome (13-45, 756K), multiple stakes-winner Tacit Agreement (7-20, 336K) and All Along Stakes heroine Silver Charades (4-15, 250K). Although she only received a 60 Beyer for her debut win at Churchill Downs, Brown Eyes Blue had to go fast early and she still held strong in the lane. Trainer Dale Romans is 1-10 (10%, $0.56 ROI) over the past five years with second-out juveniles stepping up into graded stakes. Expect Brown Eyes Blue to be among the early leaders and is capable of normal improvement. 4. CAN T EXPLAIN, a $150,000 juvenile purchase has the experience edge on the field as she s the lone baby in the race with two prior starts. Although defeated by Fully Living in her debut, the New Jersey-bred returned last month with a vengeance, winning off by 4 1/2 lengths after showing sharp early speed. The jury is still out as to the quality of the competition she beat on June 20, but she earned a competitive figure, is trained by the great Todd Pletcher, and draws a solid post outside some of the other speeds. Pletcher is 8-56 (14%, $0.75 ROI) over the past five years with juvenile maiden graduates leaping into graded stakes company. A full sister to Commonwealth Stakes winner Together Indy (3-15, 229K, 3-12 sprinting), Can t Explain looms a solid contender. 5. FULLY LIVING cost $425,000 as a yearling and is a beautifully-bred daughter of Unbridled s Song out of a half-sister to Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Halfbridled. Fully Living showed grit in her debut in beating back Can t Explain after a race-long battle. Trainer Ken McPeek is 0-9 over the past five years with second-time juveniles stepping up from maiden to graded stakes, but one of those babies, Beautician, finished second in the 2009 Schuylerville. MR HALL S OPUS, a half-sister to multiple juvenile stakes-winning sprinter Truth and Justice (4-7, 238K, 4-7 at two, 4-6 sprinting) splashed home in the mud to win her maiden at Belmont, but the Beyer came back awfully light. The dam was a juvenile stakes-winner (3-13, 69K, 3-7 at two, 2-7 sprinting), but there is a 28-day gap in the work tab (as of this writing) and Mr Hall s Opus must improve her speed figure drastically. Trainer Kelly Breen does good work with young runners (1-2, 50%, $2.80 ROI over the past five years with second-out juveniles going from maiden to graded stakes). 7. SO MANY WAYS, bred in Pennsylvania, is a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinter Scherzi (12-35, 121K, sprinting) by first-crop sire Sightseeing (won the Peter Pan, 2-18, 508K, 1-5 at two, 0-2 sprinting). BROWN EYES BLUE, a $70,000 yearling that resold for $180,000 in April, is from the first crop of the popular Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown (7-8, 3.6M, 1-1 at two). Fully Living draws nicely and can t be dismissed. 6. Dutrow sent out Grace Hall to win last year s Spinaway in her second start (1-5, 20%, $1.76 ROI over the past five years with second-time juveniles going from maiden to graded stakes. 1. Baby J 2.
