2 Invitation: You are Invited to attend the 2017 MANITOBA EQUESTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIP (MEC) This Championship show consists of two multidisciplinary teams: Team Eastman and Team Westman. The geographic dividing line is the Red River based on competitor s place of residence. Where a full team cannot be established from applicants of one region, applicants from the other region may be asked to join the other team to balance the teams. This Championship is a multi-disciplinary competition, with the following disciplines represented: Competitive Trail Dressage Endurance Eventing Hunter/Jumper Western Dressage Dressage, Eventing and Endurance classes are sanctioned at the Equine Canada Bronze level and every class offered is covered by the rules and specifications of the current rules of EC and will be held and judged in accordance with the EC Rule Book. Per Article A801, every entry at an EC-sectioned competition shall constitute an agreement by the person responsible that the owner, lessee, trainer, manager, agent, coach, driver or rider and horse shall be subject to the EC constitution and all rules of EC and any additional rules set by the competition. Any horse entered in any class at a competition may be selected for equine medication control testing while at the event location. Competitive Trail, Hunter/Jumper, and Western Dressage are sanctioned provincially. Therefore, Competitive Trail Riders, Western Dressage Riders, and Hunter/Jumpers DO NOT require EC Bronze Sport Licenses. Please disregard that portion of the entry form. It is not possible to produce all the rules and regulations governing all these disciplines in one concise document. Therefore, only general information is provided in this competitor s information package. Competitors in each discipline are expected to be aware of and follow discipline-specific rules and regulations. All are welcome to submit entries and cross-discipline entries are also accepted. Entries should be submitted to MHC at address noted on page 2. Should entries exceed the number of spots on a team, you will be informed if your entry was accepted. Order of Go: Team Eastman will compete first in all disciplines/divisions on Saturday the 23rd. The order of go will be swapped so that the other team (Team Westman) will compete first on Sunday the 24th. Each discipline/division decides among themselves who will compete in what order each day (i.e. Team Eastman Preliminary Division orders its competitors first to last). Dinner: On Saturday September 23, 2017, MHC will be hosting a sponsored dinner for all competitors at 6pm by the Equestrian Centre Canteen. Additional dinner tickets are available - $10 each. 5 DISCIPLINES Competitive Trail Fifteen mile, 25-mile, and 40 mile ride over a looped track through Birds Hill Park on Sunday only. The start, the midpoint vet check and finish of the ride/vet check will be set in the MHC Equestrian Centre, at the end of the Polo field. Placings determined based on the completion of the ride within the time allotted, the vet s verdict, and the amount of demerits assessed. Ride speed will be determined by the ride management in consultation with the veterinarian prior to the start of the ride. This CTR will be managed and judged under the rules of the Manitoba Trail Riding Club. Dressage Team Westman will include 6 selected riders from Westman Dressage. Team Eastman will include 6 riders from Dressage Winnipeg. (If for some reason each group cannot field an entire team, then additions can be made at the organizers discretion.) Qualifying shows for Winnipeg Dressage will be: Dressage Winnipeg s September 10-11, 2016 show May 26-28, 2017 show; June 23-25, 2017 show. Priority will be given to allow as many different horse and rider combinations as possible, with multiple horses per rider only if there are insufficient numbers of entries at that level. Competitors are encouraged to try and quality at the level they would have competed at for the majority of the year. If there are unfilled positions and a competitor would like to move up a level higher than they have competed at they will be invited to do so. Team breakdown will be as follows: 2 training level riders, 2 first level riders and 2 second level riders. Total team complement of 6. The three levels involved are: Training Level will ride tests 1 and 2 on the Saturday, and tests 2 and 3 on the Sunday First Level will ride tests 1 and 2 on the Saturday, and tests 2 and 3 on the Sunday Second Level will ride tests 1 and 2 on the Saturday, and tests 2 and 3 on the Sunday Western Dressage Team Westman will include 6 riders / Team Eastman will include 6 riders. Team Breakdown 2 Introductory Level, 2 Basic Level riders and 2 Level 1 riders. Total team complement of 6 Introductory Level - tests A and B on Saturday and tests C and D on Sunday. Basic level - tests A and B on Saturday and tests C and D on Sunday. Level 1 rider - tests A and B on Saturday and tests C and D on Sunday. Criteria for team selection Team members will be selected on the scores achieved throughout the 2016 competition year. Endurance Four separate rides: a 15 mile ride, a 25-mile ride, 50 mile and a 75-mile ride. All four rides are over a looped track though Birds Hill Park on Saturday only. The start and finish of the ride will be set in the MHC Equestrian Centre, End of Polo field. Placings based on time and the vet s approval. Rides to be managed under DRM and EC rules. 4 P a g e

6 Eventing One dressage test and one combined full course each day. Manitoba Horse Trial (MHT) members will be selected when choosing members for the teams. Placings based on least amount of penalties assessed. Saturday September 23, at 1:30 PM PPG Manitoba Pony Club (Ring 3) Sunday September 24, at 2:30 PM - tba AWARDS FORMAT Points Each division earns team points towards the Championship: 1 st place earns 5 points 2 nd place earns 3 points 3 rd place earns 1 point Prizes offered: The winning team (Eastman or Westman) will be awarded the perpetual Championship trophy and individual medals will be awarded to the team athletes. As sponsorship allows, some classes may receive additional prizes. 5 P a g e

7 General Rules & Conditions of Entry EQUESTRIAN CANADA (EC) RULES: As applicable, classes offered herein are covered by the Rules and Specifications of the current (2017) rules of Equestrian Canada and will be held and judged in accordance with the EC Rule Books. ENTRIES: Any entry form not properly completed or not including payment, Waiver Form and copy of current Coggins Test Certificate will be considered invalid. Given the status as a Championship Show, Manitoba Horse Council, in conjunction with the participating clubs, reserve the right to designate the members of each team should a greater number of entries (than team spots available) be submitted. Deadline is September 8 received in the MHC Office. All mailed, ed, or faxed entries must be accompanied by a Waiver of Liability duly signed and dated with the name of the exhibitor. In the case of phone entries, a Waiver must be signed upon arrival at the show grounds. All entries must be accompanied with payment (cheque or credit card) for the appropriate fee and made out to Manitoba Horse Council. Parents or guardians must sign for junior exhibitors. Late entries will be accepted on receipt of an additional late fee of $10. Final deadline September 18, DRUG FEES & TESTING: Drug fees are mandatory for Equestrian Canada competitions and must be included with entry fees. For rules governing Equine Medications, please see Rules of Equestrian Canada, General Regulations, Chapter 10 (Equine Medications Control). Any horse entered in any class at the competitions may, while on the competition grounds, be selected for equine medication control testing. Riders are also subject to the Medication Control rules set by Sport Canada and may be tested. CURRENT NEGATIVE COGGINS TEST CERTIFICATE PER HORSE is mandatory. Scanned Copy of Certificates should be sent in together with your entry form, and should be on premises throughout the weekend, to be available for spot checks as required. CANCELLATION: Competitors canceling after the official closing date of September 8 will only be refunded upon receipt of a veterinarian s certificate of disability or a doctor's certificate. REPORTING FOR COMPETITION: Note: All competitors are expected to report in to the Show Secretary at the show office upon arrival (no earlier than 10 am) to confirm that all is in order with your entry forms and classes and to pick up your show numbers. (This is expected even if you are using your own numbers.) For security reasons the show office needs to know which horses are on the grounds and ensure that contact information is correct. The show office will be open from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, September 22, and opens a half hour before the show starts on Saturday and Sunday. For those arriving Friday afternoon, please report to the show office as soon as you arrive. This will allow those who arrive very late Friday evening or early Saturday morning a chance to sign in and give the show office more time Saturday morning to prepare for the judges and set up for the show. NUMBERS must be worn and visible at all times in the warm-up, schooling and/or exercise areas as well as in the competition rings, whether the horse is under saddle or not. SHOW SCHEDULE: Warm-ups will be available after 3:00 pm on Friday. A ring will be designated for each discipline (where applicable). See the show office for the schedule on Friday. In the event of changes to the schedule (e.g., due to scratches), day sheets will be posted daily in the morning of competition. These sheets will inform all competitors of the most current and correct order of go and will override previous scheduling. It is the competitors responsibility to check for any possible changes. PROTECTIVE HEAD GEAR: (see EC Rules). EC strongly recommends that all riders wear approved ASTM/SEI or BSI approved protective headgear at all levels. Note: JUNIORS Must wear ASTM/SEI or BSI approved protective headgear at all times when mounted. The harness must be securely attached. This rule applies 6 P a g e

8 even if the junior turns 18 during the competition season in which they continue to compete in junior classes. Failure to comply with these dress regulations will result in elimination. All Endurance / Competitive Trail riders must wear ASTM approved helmets. STABLING AND TACK STALLS: All horses will be assigned a stall, the fee for which will be taken from the flat entry fee required. This fee, as it applies to stabling will include first bedding and final cleaning of the stall. A $7.90 (including GST) per bag fee for extra shavings will be charged. Tack Stalls will be assigned based on availability (that is, the number of stalls remaining after horses are assigned will determine how many tack stalls are available). Stalls will be assigned and supplied with a MHC Stall card. CAMPING: NO water/electric hook ups. $10.50 per Night. Must be booked in advance. PRESENTATION OF AWARDS: All medals and/or prizes, and the Team Championship trophy will be presented after the completion of the show on Sunday afternoon. Photos will be taken for publication in various media. Competitors are to be unmounted and suitably attired for presentation of awards. LIABILITY: It is a condition of entry that neither Manitoba Horse Council nor the Show Committee will be held responsible in any way for damage, injury, or loss to persons, horses or property of spectators or competitors. Waivers must be signed by all Exhibitors, Persons Responsible, and/or parents/guardians of junior competitors, as well as the horse s legal owner. PROTESTS: A protest at an EC sanctioned competition, other than those specific matters covered in division rules, must comply with the following provisions: a protest is eligible only if made by an EC sport license holder (i.e. owner, lessee, trainer, coach, official, competitor or authorized agent) in the division in which the question arises. a protest must be made in writing and addressed to the secretary of the competition at the time that the matter under consideration occurs, must be signed and must be accompanied by a deposit of $100 in cash. For full details see Article A 1206 General Regulations. COMPLAINTS: All complaints or questions should be directed to the Show Chair or the Assistant Show Chair. Complaints regarding an incident during the competition or the scoring must be lodged within one-half hour after the posting of the official results. DIRECTIONS & PARKING: For arrival and departure of trailers, parking for competitors and visitors see map at end of prize list. Parking arrangements for haul-ins and all other competitors will be posted at the show. DOGS must be under control, quiet, and on a leash (no expanding leads) at all times. 9 THE EC RULE BOOK: Sanctioned disciplines - Dressage, Eventing and Endurance ONLY The competition listed herein, with respect to the disciplines recognizing EC, is a sanctioned Bronze competition, member of Equestrian Canada. All participants in EC sanctioned competitions must have a thorough knowledge of EC rules and of class specifications in relevant divisions. Compliance with EC rules is mandatory. Please use EC disciplinespecific rules in conjunction with EC General Regulations. For a list of related publications available from EC and from the Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs), visit the EC website at: EQUINE CANADA STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLE EC, the National Equestrian Federation of Canada, supports adherence to humane treatment of horses in all activities under its jurisdiction. EC is committed to: upholding the welfare of horses, regardless of value, as a primary consideration in all activities; requiring that horses be treated with kindness, respect and the compassion that they deserve, and that they never be subjected to mistreatment; ensuring that owners, trainers and exhibitors or their agents use responsible care in the handling, treatment and transportation of their horses as well as horses placed in their care for any purpose; providing for the continuous well-being of horses by encouraging routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals to achieve the highest possible standards of nutrition, health, comfort, sanitation and safety as a matter of standard operating procedure; continuing to support scientific studies on equine health and welfare; increasing education in training and horsemanship practices; requiring owners, trainers and exhibitors to know and follow their sanctioning organization s rules, and to work within industry regulations in all equestrian competition; reviewing, revising and developing competition rules and regulations that protect the welfare of horses. The standard by which conduct or treatment will be measured is that which a person, informed and experienced in generally accepted equine training and exhibition procedures, would determine not to be cruel, abusive or inhumane. 8 P a g e
