1 2018 April Volume 29 Number 4 IN MEMORY OF WHIP R SNAPPER DRIVING SOCIETY 1 ST PRESIDENT BILL GIPSON Great memories of Bill Gipson In 1987 I answered an ad in the Thousand Oaks paper about a horse for lease. Got in contact with the owner, Bill Gipson, arranged a deal and I leased Rouge Bi Bask, Arabian mare. Had a great time reactivating my life time love of horses riding Rouge in the equestrian park behind Gipsons. One day Bill came up with a cart and harness and said let s drive. That was the beginning of 30 years of fun and excitement. Bill was quite the adventurist. We entered the Conejo Valley Days parade with horses that hadn t been out of the back yard equestrian park let alone on a busy, noisy city street. Wow. We made it. In 1988 Bill said, hey, let s get you and Rouge in the Heels and Wheels California Classic at Cota de Caza. Never seen a CDE except on video but spent the summer reading the ADS rule book and figured I could do this with Bill hand holding the whole time. Survived that adventure too and I was hooked. In 1989 Bill said we have made so many new friends with this driving let s start our own driving club like Heels and Wheels. Thus, the beginning of the Whip rsnapper Driving Society of Southern California. And now, nearly 30 years later Bill s legacy lives on. Bill later moved to Florida but we have kept in touch. The call from wife, Carolyn, the end of March about Bill s passing really hit us hard. Thanks Bill for the memories. You will be missed.

Whip r Snapper President's Message Well the weather cancelled our March duck club drive. The parking lot was under water. We will try to schedule it for later in the year. While I would like to see a bit more gentle rain I think we are done for the year. It is time to get the furry beasts out and start driving. Remember that unless you clip or they have shed out your horses are in a fur coat and physically out of shape. Lots of walking will get them in better shape than faster work. I know it is boring but worth the effort. Our were in the best shape of their lives when we did nothing but walk for two months before the Rose Parade in I got a phone call last week from someone who is trying to sell an antique pony cart with 46 shafts. That will fit a VSE or slightly larger. From the pictures it is unusual and will need some work. If anyone is interested let me know and I will forward the pictures and other info. I hope everyone is preparing for Pleasure Days. We should have a great show this year in a wonderful venue. Jody FROM YOUR EDITOR In the photo with John Morgan at Morgan Carriage Works, L-R: John Morgan, Mike Downing, Chris Downing, Nadine Webb, Bill Gipson with Gerrie Poirier in front. As one of the original WS members I remember Bill to be a caring person who did a lot to make our club a great club. For this I thank him. Bill s idea has now been thriving for 29 years and it looks like it might continue for another 29.

5 NEW ADS MEMBER BENEFIT ADS Driven Dressage Awards The American Driving Society, Inc (ADS) is pleased to announce its newest awards program, the ADS Driven Derssage Awards A team of driven dressage enthusiasts (Beth Rieselman, Gail Aumiller, Mary Phelps, Hardy Zantke, and Tracey Morgan) imagined this awards program and modeled it after a similar awards program offered by the United States Dressage Federation. The ADS has received generous funding from Gail Aumiller to cover all costs of this new program. This program will encourage driven dressage and education striving towards better dressage, as well as increased ADS membership and more events offering dressage to be ADS recognized. Blue Medal: ADS Training Level Tests Bronze Medal: ADS Preliminary Tests Silver Medal: ADS Intermediate Level Tests and / or FEI 1 Tests Gold Medal: ADS Advanced Level and / or FEI 2 or 3 Tests for equivalent = tests driven at FEI World Championships Requirements: For each level four tests of the required level or higher (see note below 1 below) with a score of below 48 penalty points or above 70% - are required. Note: For all tests which do not have Presentation included all ADT tests as well as others which are not POM (Presentation on the Move) the 70% equals 45 penalty points, so for those the score must be below 45 penalty points. Tests must have been driven at an ADS or USEF or FEI recognized event. (See Note 2 below) Driver must be a current ADS member. Each test must have been judged by an ADS, USEF or FEI licensed Combined Driving Judge, or an ADS licensed Driven Dressage Judge. Each of the four tests must be from a separate drive (e.g. one cannot turn in three tests from three different judges all from the same drive when there were three judges judging). The tests do not need to be from four separate events in case an event offers more than one test like a Driven Dressage Festival. Tests must be from at least three different judges. There is no time limit. The tests can be accumulated by the driver over any number of years. They can be driven with any number of different turnouts.
6 It is up to the driver to accumulate the four tests and send them in. Each test should have sufficient information to verify the date, the name and location of the event, and the name of the judge. This can either be done by stating sufficient information on the dressage tests score sheet and /or by providing a result sheet of the events showing the required information as listed above. Where no individual dressage tests are available verifiable show result sheetw will be acceptable too and in that case even an averaged score of all judges is acceptable. Note 1: Or higher to mean: Applicants may turn in one or more tests from higher livel than the one they are aiming for the reward, e.g. for a blue level award, where four training level tests are required, if the applicant has only three ro fewer, but has another one or more from the Preliminary level or even from Intermediate or Advanced (all within the qualifying score) they may use those Preliminary, Intermediated, or Advanced Level tests. Similarly for all the other levels. Further: Turning in qualifying test for a higher level will not automatically qualify for a lower level award as well, e.g. if one turns in tests qualifying for a silver medal, one will not also be awarded a blue and bronze medal. Note 2: ADS recognized event that offered driven dressage, so ADT s, HDTs, Combined Tests, CDEs, and Pleasure Driving Shows all are acceptable. The following information comes to me through s and deserves a second look. I missed getting this request into the April newsletter s calendar. This pleasure driving show is truly first class and I encourage anyone who finds themselves in the area during the show to go see it. Of course if you could compete there it would be terrific.
