Whip r Snapper President's Message June 2018 Thank you to all who made Pleasure Days happen. It takes an army to make a show like this happen. From the competitor's side things went well except that the sound system could have been better. I understand that the subject is being discussed with the venue. A special thanks to Katie Twooey, Jennifer Russell, Regina Casey and Melanie Brooker for making it happen. And again thanks to all the volunteers. We can't have shows without you. On June 23, ETI will be holding their annual driving show in Burbank. This is the perfect schooling event regardless of your driving interest. There are both ring classes and obstacle classes. Both give a green horse and/or driver opportunities to get used to other horses and carriages around. It's an excellent place to practice standing. Please look at the calendar page for more events. It used to be I hoped for one event/month. Now we have to make decisions on where to go. A brief update on Emmett, Ely Decker's pony. As you remember Ely was killed in a traffic accident earlier in the year. Over a year ago I had asked Ely if he wanted to sell him. At the time Ely wasn't ready. After Ely's death, Donna, Ely's mother, asked if I was still interested and now Emmett lives here at Oak Run. Pleasure Days was his first pleasure show and he was outstanding. A bit nervous as a single but otherwise he had a good time. He is a friendly, almost cuddly boy, who is a bit confused about small people otherwise known as children. This too will pass. One such example is the beautiful handmade quilt, created and donated by Sheri Worsham, Lee's sister, for Pleasure Days. It was the award for the Obstacles Championship won by David Aparicio. 10 2018 Pleasure Days Carriage Driving Show Once again, on June 2 nd and 3 rd, the Whip R Snapper Driving Society of Southern California presented a beautiful Pleasure Days Carriage Driving Show. As it was last year, the venue for the 2018 Pleasure Days Show was Hansen Dam Horse Park (formerly known as Hansen Dam Equestrian Center) in Sylmar, California. We had good weather, and our competitors expressed appreciation for this location freeway close but within a large Los Angeles City park and adjacent to an established equine friendly neighborhood. The Whip R Snappers are extremely grateful to the volunteers and the sponsors whose hard work and contributions made it possible to put on this beautiful competition. It is impossible to include everyone s name here, but our admiration of and gratitude to each and every one of our volunteers and sponsors is boundless. We are also thrilled with and appreciative of our competitors who consisted of new drivers at their very first driving show as well as seasoned competitors. Our entrants provided a gorgeous display of equines, carriages, and drivers throughout the two days of showing.. Our equines came in a variety of sizes ranging from Very Small Equines to Draft Horses, and included almost everything in-between. Our drivers included many juniors as well as adults, and it was a pleasure to watch all of the classes and witness the camaraderie among all of the whips. Our officials for this competition were Debbie Banfield, Registered ADS Pleasure Driving Judge from Kentucky; Jane Merritt, Recorded ADS Pleasure Driving Judge from Northern California; and Deborah Bevan, Registered ADS Technical Delegate from Wisconsin. They all worked diligently and collegially and we are grateful for their hard work and friendly attitude. Hi Drivers, Volunteers and Sponsors, Thank you all so much for coming out to Hansen Dam last weekend. The DRIVERS had a good time with great footing but a little too much heat. The VOLUNTEERS made it possible to have a smooth running show. The SPONSORS contributed dollars and their time to help make the show a success. And a thank you to Pam Miller and her ETI crew for lunches and the competitor dinner which was delicious as usual. The final results and all dressage scores are posted on the ADS website as well as on our Pleasure Days website. Congratulations to Bill Deeney who drove Nadine Tilley's Andalusian pair ((Gaviota and Granjera) to win our overall show championship. Karen Poly and Desert Rain were reserve show champion. 11 NICE HORSE FOR SALE I am writing to all of you as you all remain so vibrant in the driving world. Brian has decided he is giving up horses. Exactly a year ago, he purchased the loveliest and sweetest Dutch harness horse from Koss de Ronde drove him for a month and then simply did not have any time due to work obligations. Alexander whom you all know has had him in training and only Alexander ( with a couple lessons given to me) has driven him. He is lovely and sweet and it breaks my heart to give him up as I would love to drive him myself. Dutch harness horses have. I think, a reputation of being high strung. This guy is so sweet and calm. He is extremely light, extremely responsive and very capable. He is chestnut with 4 white socks, a white blaze. He has to go to someone who loves their horses not just as cars that you drive into the ground use and replace. He is a horse of lifetime and someone ought to have him who will feel that way about him. I do. So, he is for sale. If you know the right person, please have them call me. I no longer drive harness and have two harnesses to sell or donate. One is custom made patent leather with both a collar and breast plate. It was made with dressage/combined driving as a goal, and fit for a 16 hand warmblood mare. The second is what I used as a practice harness, I think I bought it from Smuckers when I lived in the east. I ve oiled both of them back to life. The show harness was never used, the practice harness used a few times. I m willing to donate them to someone that has great passion to drive but can t afford to get started. Thanks for your help. Kevin Fetherston driving Diva & Diamond won Your Route / My route. Even though Cathie Redmond is holding a red ribbon she earned in Turnout she did win Reinsmanship. I m m including volunteers Ronda McPherson scribe and Suellen Hall on the Gate as winners as they worked hard all day.
