Whip r Snapper President's Message May 2017 I frequently look at last month's and last year's message when I go to write these monthly columns. It has been a whole year since USEF and ADS decided to work together after several months of bad behavior. The two organizations worked out their problems. We will be doing a beginners' clinic here at Oak Run on June 30. This is in response to the 50+ people who wanted info at the Pomona Equine Affair. This is for those who want to learn about driving. If you have friends who want to learn send them to this event. We will be limiting attendance so each person can get individual attention. There will be a small charge which will include lunch. Any experienced drivers who want to help and/or bring their novice broke horses are welcome, just let me know. If we have sufficient interest and a venue we hope to repeat in the San Diego area later this year. Get your entries in for Pleasure Days. Hansen Dam is a wonderful venue. If you can't enter then please come to volunteer. We can't have shows without you. Safe Driving Jody FROM YOUR EDITOR As I believe volunteering is important and necessary I cede my space to Jennifer. Hello, Well it is that time of year again for Whip R Snapper Driving Society to be getting ready for their June Pleasure Days Show. We hope to see many of you driving. If you are not driving and would like to participate we are always looking for volunteers and would love to have you come join us. Great way to spend a few hours, half a day or full day outdoors interacting with great people and watching horses strutting around the arena having fun. When June 2 & 3 Where: Hanson Dam Horse Park If you are interested in volunteering please contact Jennifer Russell with questions or for more information horsesjenrussell@gmail.com Thank you, Jennifer

NEW ADS MEMBER BENEFIT ADS Driven Dressage Awards The American Driving Society, Inc (ADS) is pleased to announce its newest awards program, the ADS Driven Derssage Awards A team of driven dressage enthusiasts (Beth Rieselman, Gail Aumiller, Mary Phelps, Hardy Zantke, and Tracey Morgan) imagined this awards program and modeled it after a similar awards program offered by the United States Dressage Federation. The ADS has received generous funding from Gail Aumiller to cover all costs of this new program. This program will encourage driven dressage and education striving towards better dressage, as well as increased ADS membership and more events offering dressage to be ADS recognized. Blue Medal: ADS Training Level Tests Bronze Medal: ADS Preliminary Tests Silver Medal: ADS Intermediate Level Tests and / or FEI 1 Tests Gold Medal: ADS Advanced Level and / or FEI 2 or 3 Tests for equivalent = tests driven at FEI World Championships Requirements: For each level four tests of the required level or higher (see note below 1 below) with a score of below 48 penalty points or above 70% - are required. Note: For all tests which do not have Presentation included all ADT tests as well as others which are not POM (Presentation on the Move) the 70% equals 45 penalty points, so for those the score must be below 45 penalty points. Tests must have been driven at an ADS or USEF or FEI recognized event. (See Note 2 below) Driver must be a current ADS member. Each test must have been judged by an ADS, USEF or FEI licensed Combined Driving Judge, or an ADS licensed Driven Dressage Judge. Each of the four tests must be from a separate drive (e.g. one cannot turn in three tests from three different judges all from the same drive when there were three judges judging). The tests do not need to be from four separate events in case an event offers more than one test like a Driven Dressage Festival. Tests must be from at least three different judges. There is no time limit. The tests can be accumulated by the driver over any number of years. They can be driven with any number of different turnouts.

It is up to the driver to accumulate the four tests and send them in. Each test should have sufficient information to verify the date, the name and location of the event, and the name of the judge. This can either be done by stating sufficient information on the dressage tests score sheet and /or by providing a result sheet of the events showing the required information as listed above. Where no individual dressage tests are available verifiable show result sheetw will be acceptable too and in that case even an averaged score of all judges is acceptable. Note 1: Or higher to mean: Applicants may turn in one or more tests from higher livel than the one they are aiming for the reward, e.g. for a blue level award, where four training level tests are required, if the applicant has only three ro fewer, but has another one or more from the Preliminary level or even from Intermediate or Advanced (all within the qualifying score) they may use those Preliminary, Intermediated, or Advanced Level tests. Similarly for all the other levels. Further: Turning in qualifying test for a higher level will not automatically qualify for a lower level award as well, e.g. if one turns in tests qualifying for a silver medal, one will not also be awarded a blue and bronze medal. Note 2: ADS recognized event that offered driven dressage, so ADT s, HDTs, Combined Tests, CDEs, and Pleasure Driving Shows all are acceptable. MEMBER AD RATES NON-MEMBER AD RATES 6 Lines for 3 months $20.00 $40.00 Business card for 1 year $30.00 $60.00 ¼ Page for one year $50.00 $ ½ Page for one year $75 $ Full page for one year $ $ Add $50.00 for color ads Full page color ad for one month $50.00 Half page color ad for one month $30.00

Whip r Snapper Board Meeting via conference call; April 24, 2018 Board members calling in were Jody Cutler, President; Jennifer Russell, Vice-President; Diane Kern, Secretary; Dave Schneider, Treasurer; Patricia Carlson, Elaine Boydston, Katie Twohy, Marianne Bordier, and Melanie Brooker. Also on line were Ted and Veronica Campbell. Minutes; January minutes were published in the newsletter and no one could recall any corrections required. Treasurer s Report; from Dave Schneider: April 4, 2018: Checking account balance; $4, Savings account balance; $10, The Larry Brinker clinic brought in $1260 and after expenses were paid the profit was $78. Airfare was paid out in March and April for our two Pleasure Days judges and TD $1, A transfer of funds was discussed to cover the show expenses but it was felt we would do it if needed at the time. The Horse Expo total cost was $297.25; half of which Pam Miller, our ADS representative will submit to the ADS for reimbursement. One bounced check was received and Dave Schneider and Katie Twohy will pursue payment and collect bank fees. Dave Schneider and Melanie Brooker (our outgoing treasurer) have the two debit cards. Melanie will send her card to the president. Horse Expo; Diane Kern reported that a list of 53 interested potential drivers was collected. These people were ed a complimentary club newsletter and a list of So. Cal. instructors. Many Pleasure Days flyers, club membership forms and ADS discounted member forms were handed out as well as business cards for Bob Wise s training facility. All the great volunteers who manned the booth did a great job of outreach; letting people know that there is a job for that idle mini, horse or pony. The club and ADS emphasis on safety has made some people feel that the club members are snooty and we sometimes give the impression of exclusivity. So make any comments constructive, positive and in a friendly manner. New Business: Ted Campbell filed our club taxes with the IRS for 2017 on form 990-N. Thank you Ted! Duck Club Drive is still tentative. We will get a flyer out to the membership if a date is set. Jody Cutler will send in the paperwork for our club insurance with Equisure. The cost is $862 and could change with the locations we are requesting to be covered. Four locations will be insured for the calendar year; Oak Run Farm, Pam & Hei Miller-Mitchell s ranch, the Duck Club (Ventura Game Preserve) and Bar-H. Approximate cost for each venue is $80. The cost to add a location for a specific event is about $150. The board agreed to donate $200 in memory of Ely Decker to the Society for the Preservation of Combined Driving. Ely was one of our promising junior drivers from northern Calif. and he died in an automobile accident in March. Donations can be made to SPACD, c/o Dan Rosenthal, P.O. Box 63, Mitford, NJ 08848, with Ely Decker in the memo line.

2018 Whip r Snapper Events: Pleasure Days; June Hansen Dam Horse Park; Lake View Terrace, CA Regina Casey has volunteered to be show secretary and the web site has been updated. Jennifer Russell (our volunteer chairman) has sent out a plea for volunteers. A few people have already got their preferred jobs, so if you have a preference let Jennifer know ASAP. Show information will be included in the next newsletter and Diane Kern will do an ing to all members and past drivers. has all the latest info. We are offering Drive & Ride, Red Hat (either you or your horse) and Freestyle Reinsmanship. Drivers are encouraged to drive to music but you can do it without. Beginner Clinic #1; June Oak Run Farm; Moorpark, CA Due to comments received at the Horse Expo it was felt that a beginner clinic was needed to introduce potential drivers to safe harnessing, carriage suitability and other aspects of the sport. Jody Cutler and Diane Kern will develop a flyer for distribution. Jody Cutler agreed to volunteer her time. Thank you, Jody. Volunteers and extra horses may be needed to help out and demonstrate. Drivers can bring their own equines and equipment. If they bring a horse they will be asked to bring a helper. 15 to 20 people will be the maximum accepted. The cost will be $30 with lunch included, $10 for helpers/grooms with a $10 discount for W rs members. Halloween Hustle; October Oak Run Farm; Moorpark, CA Jody Cutler is working on Omnibus and date application. She has arranged for Larry Brinker to come down and judge the dressage. He will stay over and do clinics after the show. The pleasure judge is still to be determined but it will be late in the season for eastern judges and availability should not be a problem. Other 2018 Driving Events: CALENDAR: The W rs Calendar on our website; has all the events that we have heard about and is updated as information comes to Diane Kern, club secretary. Morgan Medallion Classic Regional Championship Show; July Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara, CA Contact Stacy Hennessy; emgjoker@aol.com for information. Ventura Co. Fair Show; August Seaside Park, Ventura, CA Jennifer Russell and Jody Cutler are working with the fair people. It will be similar in format to last year s show. The glitches in the class lists and numbering have been corrected. The show will be staffed by some W rs members but will not be a W rs show. The prize money will continue and the dollars will come from the state as in the past. Valley Center Vaqueros Driving Show; Sept 2 & Nov 4; in Valley Center, CA These show are down south, good parking, large arena, and corrals all on a acre site. for more information. Beginner Clinic #2 Another beginner clinic was suggested to cover the southern area and Patricia Carlson said the Valley Center Vaquero location would be a suitable location. We will try to find a date for later in the year. Submitted by: Diane Kern, Secretary.

The Whip r Snapper Driving society of Southern California was founded in 1989 to promote the sport of driving and to educate the public about driving, safety and to include the public in our activities and events. We are a non-profit organization and a recognized organization of the American Driving Society (ADS). More than 100 Whip r Snapper members represent a variety of skills and interest in driving activities; including serving as officials, organizers and volunteers at events or participating in combined driving, pleasure driving, arena driving, driven dressage or just driving for sport and pure enjoyment. We also have members who build and restore carriages of all types and distribute a variety of driving equipment. We have several members who are ADS officials and drivers on all levels as well as novice drivers who are just getting started and benefit from the help and advice of veteran drivers.
