Here are some Irish horse proverbs for you. It is the good horse that draws its own cart. The raggy colt often made a powerful horse. The world would not make a racehorse of a donkey. Thanks to Karen Barnard for sharing her horse s Glamour Shots for our newsletter feature! Before: Snow Pony After: Show Pony!

If you have your test called during a competition, the caller must begin before the horse enters the ring, otherwise you are disqualified. Should the horse ignore the fine aid, it can be repeated, and its intensity can be increased similarly to how one would gradually increase the volume on the stereo until the horse s sensitivity threshold is reached. This threshold can be moved up or down through training! Insensitive horses can be tuned to respond to lighter aids. Hypersensitive horses can be made more tolerant.

8 Page 8 Half-Halt Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association Ask the Trainer Column Dear Ask the Trainer: I am a riding instructor and would like to hone my craft and improve my communications skills with my students. Can you help? Signed, Trying to Totally Teach Dear Trying To Totally Teach, You have asked a very good question. In my answer I will refer to your rider/student as she, or your rider. I believe there are two components to better, and easier learning. 1. How you present the lesson to your rider. 2. How willing, and receptive the rider is to receive the information. How you present the lesson, how you communicate to your rider is very important. The more gentle and caring, versus harsh and critical you are, the more open and receptive your rider will be to the information you offer. You cannot physically make a rider move her body, or make her learn. Your rider has a choice to learn. She will decide consciously, or un-consciously, depending on the way the information is offered. Teaching a horse by force crushes the horses spirit. The same applies to a rider. Keep the Spirit of Learning in your rider. Learning should not be hard, mentally or physically. Keep it simple, keep it interesting, and avoid overloading your riders mind and body. If you lose your riders attention there will be a disconnect from learning. You can open the path to her mind, to her receptiveness, to her attention, by offering the information, in a clear, non-threatening way, using good communication tools. Three of many communication tools that connect you to your rider, are the use of your Voice, your written and spoken Words, and your Body Language. These can be used in a positive, or a negative way. VOICE *Speak with a smile in your voice. It will not only lift you up if your mood is down, but will create a sense of calmness and trust from your rider. * A soft tone will help your rider to relax. A relaxed rider is more receptive to incoming information. *A growly, or moody sounding tone can create tension in your rider and erode her self confidence. *A high pitched voice can trigger the fight or Flight response, and with that comes tension and anxiety. So drop it down a notch if your goal is a receptive rider. WORDS *Use positive words when you want a receptive, open minded rider. Speak respectfully and gently, and you will get respect in return.

9 Page 9 Ask the Trainer Column (Continued) Half-Halt Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association * Your words are very powerful. They are incredibly important, and should be chosen with care. The use of positive words and comments, can increase rider confidence, self esteem, relaxation, body awareness ( yes, body awareness), and memory, among many other benefits. This is a great tool for developing a riders willingness to learn.. And its easy, all you have to do is pay attention to your choice of words! *When using praise, be specific. I liked the way you used your seat in the transition, instead of the generic phrase I liked your transition. Being specific leaves no room for the rider to guess exactly what she did right. *Words that relate to emotions and images are easier to process and use, which creates a more receptive rider, and results in easier learning. *NEGATIVE words can shut a rider down to incoming information. *A teacher that marches in and begins barking orders like a cavalry officer, using stern, demanding words, is not creating a good learning environment. This style and word choice creates tension, and stiffness. The rider either salutes and bows, or is not receptive and tunes the teacher out! *Be age specific with your choice of words, your vocabulary. Talking over the head of a youngster, or talking down to an adult does not create a receptive mind. The youngster will be confused, and tune you out, and the adult may be insulted. *Critical words, or criticism You should have, you shouldn t have, you didn t do are seldom received well. Not many riders want to be criticized. It errodes a riders good attitude. Its hindsight education. Lots of teachers can tell you what you did wrong, after you did it. A receptive rider wants to hear what she did right and how to improve next time. I like to think, there is no wrong, there is only better. *Sarcasm tears down what you are trying to build up. It is mean, it is counter productive, it is not educational, and creates a rider that is not receptive to learning. Its called bully teaching. Lets start a new trend and stop the bullying of riders in lessons! *A rapid flow of words, even when spoken in a soft, low tone can cause a traffic jam in your riders mind. Its like I-264 at rush hour. Too many words, too fast, becomes hard to mentally keep up with. Frustration sets in and your riders ability to be receptive, like traffic, can come to a standstill. *Last on my word list is the word don t. It appears innocent, but actually creates minor havoc in your riders mind. It even has its own name, its called Thought Suppression, as in don t think about a pink elephant. Now all you can do is think about a pink elephant! Consider the phrase don t Look Down. The word don t is perceived in the mind as a Critical comment. The words look down are perceived as a Command, or action. The riders mind tends to focus directly on the command look down, and reduces attention to the critical comment, don t. So there she is, thinking in figure eights! Because she still hasn t been told just exactly what to do. It is better to say what response you would like to see from your rider. This avoids confusion, even if its minor confusion. BODY LANGUAGE *Make eye contact often, this helps to establish a relationship with your rider. In addition, eye contact can encourage rapport, trust and as a result, a receptive rider.

10 Page 10 Ask the Trainer Column (Continued) *A smile is an unspoken comment. It can mean encouragement, approval, a task well done, and more. Use it often as it also increases rider attention and willingness to learn. *Open, expressive arms and hands give your rider the impression that you want to be there teaching, versus crossed arms or tight fists. *Face your rider when talking. Avoid walking away while talking, mumbling, or talking to your toes. When its a struggle to hear you your rider may not pay attention, and you will be creating a rider that is not receptive, not learning easily. I hope these concepts will be of some use to you. I have offered a few good things to use and some things that would not help your riders learn very easily. If you have any questions, or want more information about teaching in general, please feel free to me at marthamarquette@hotmail.com. 11 Page 11 Have a funny or inspiring horse show story to share? them to your newsletter editor! I ll start.. My wonderful mare Landi was less than wonderful at times! She was unpredictable when not in season and downright awful when she was. I got to the show grounds with high hopes and she warmed up beautifully. Just then, I saw some stallions. Uh-oh, I thought because I knew she would go immediately (and I mean IMMEDIATELY) go into heat at their presence. Sure enough, as we went down the centerline, I could tell something was wrong. We stopped, did a great halt and then it happened the rebellion! Landi wouldn t budge and just hunched up and squealed when I put my leg on her. There was no moving her forward, backward or sideways. I saluted the judge to retire from the class and spent the next few minutes trying to get her back out of the ring! Anna Schriebl May you never encounter a mare rebellion and lots of luck this show season!

SVDA receives 50% of the proceeds!! Special Horse Organization Winners Program (SHOW) Southern States has a program to help non-profit horse associations and clubs have their own sponsorship tool. In order for our club to benefit, we need proof of purchase seals from Southern States, Legends and Triple Crown feed bags. If you are willing to help or have a neighbor or friend that is willing to provide their feedbag seals, please contact Mary Winchell at ambeholdin@verizon.net. And don t forget to volunteer at SVDA shows and events! Side reins should not pull a horse down; they should just invite the horse to be on the bit. We have to build the neck muscle, and that s part of the work-in-hand. Arthur Kottas

16 Page 16 Horses, practical life lessons, so much more than just riding lessons... Every single day I am amazed at our big furry friends and the lessons they help teach us in life. In this blurb, I focus on some of the more practical skills that can be learned in the horse environment including time management, multi tasking, work ethic, team work, assertiveness without aggression, sharing, helping others, follow through, memorization, public speaking, record keeping, journaling, goal setting, organization, leadership. Whew! A day in the life... student A has a lesson at 2:45. What time do they need to arrive to get the horse groomed, tacked up and warmed up in time? How few trips can they make to the tack room to get the supplies they need? Is it a group lesson or quadrille practice? Do their team mates need a hand, does someone need to borrow something they forgot or ran out of? Did you remember to bring the items needed from home/stop by the tack shop for supplies? Is your horse minding his manners, did you praise the good behavior? Have you memorized your latest dressage test? Are you thinking about how your horse is responding in your lesson, teacher might call on you at any time to discuss the exercise? Did you remember to write in your journal the lesson for the day so you can refer back to the exercises? What are your long and short term goals, what steps are you taking to get there? Better look on the calendar to see when entries are due for next show, clinic or event, next farrier and vet appointment, make sure checks are on time. Don't forget to confirm next lesson, trailering arrangements to next event, pay the board bill... Make sure you clean up after yourself and your horse, put all items away, make note of anything you might be running low on. And don't forget the affectionate snuggle with your four legged friend on the way out! I have found my horsie young riders do better in school, find good jobs, are accepted at good colleges, have more opportunities open to them in part due to the skills learned in the barn. I'm sure many of you can think of several more examples of the practical side of horse management. I always say if a youth is horse crazy, they learn so many life skills doing something they love, and you know where they are and what they are doing with their free time - AT THE BARN! Submitted by Tristin Hardy Butler Tristin Hardy Butler is overjoyed and thrilled to announce her purchase of long time equine partner "Naguchi"! She has partnered with friend and Healing Touch Practitioner Nancy Sheheen as co-owners. Thank you to friend and previous owner Sara Baldwin in making Tristin's dream come true! Tristin hopes to be able to show Naguchi this coming year, but even if that isn't possible, they are just happy to stay together.

Pony Clubbers will be competing in a United States Pony Club Qualifying Rally. Pony Club is an international youth equestrian organization which develops character, leadership, confidence and a sense of community in youth through a program that teaches the care of horses and ponies, riding and mounted sports. In rallies, the youth competitors work as members of a team with no help from adults, other than rally officials, at the risk of penalty points for unauthorized assistance. As such we will have a few unusual rules to allow the pony clubbers to meet their rally requirements: Pony Clubbers in the rally may have, at times, priority use of one of the warm up rings and that ring may be closed to open show competitors for some periods of time. At least one warm up ring will be available at all times to Open Show competitors. The pony club competitor s barn will be separate and closed to the Open Show and all others other then ODRPC officials. Please do not try to enter their barn while in competition. In pony club the youth are judged not only on their riding, but on their horse management skills. You are invited each day to visit the barns during visiting hour which will be posted at the show office each day. If you would like to see and talk to the pony club equestrians please visit at this time. You are sure to see some well cared for ponies, tack and tack rooms! Otherwise please stay out of their barns so they can focus on their competition requirements and not risk interference penalties! 29 Page 29 Part I of the L Program Draws to a Close And, while I was happy to have completed this milestone, I also found myself a little sad that it was over. Our instructor was Bill Solyntjes, a member of the L faculty, the chair of the test writing committee, a member of the Sport Horse & Judges committee, as well as an S Judge and R Sporthorse judge. Just the fact that this busy dressage authority found time to teach us was amazing! Bill s task was to teach us to sharpen our eye on the factors that make up the collective marks. He taught us how to distinguish between what was the horse s fault and what was the rider s fault and how to communicate this to the rider through marks and thoughtful comments. Bill taught us that impulsion was the back & hindlegs and indications of impulsion include a swinging back, soft/free tail carriage and an active hindleg. Submission is indicated by the head and neck of the horse and its bend. When looking at gaits, Bill reminded us that the walk was not just the footfalls. Judges must look for use of the topline, neck oscillation and swing of the back. In the trot, we were instructed to look for a working gait at and not a passagey trot and to be careful that the trot didn t go four-beat in the transitions. The canter should have jump and there should be good neck oscillation and an uphill tendency in the shoulders. When it came to evaluating the rider s position, we were treated to videos which showed what would happen if the horse was pulled out from beneath the rider. A chair seat led to the rider falling onto their backside. It was a great visual that is useful to riders and trainers alike! On the second day, we evaluated riders as they rode different tests and were given a chance to give and discuss the collective marks scores we gave. One of the hottest topics was the stretch circle and the fact that most riders do it incorrectly. Bill stated it was a test within a test and it should include accuracy, connection and the horse following the riders hand down. Many rider s throw the reins away and show their misunderstanding of the movement and allow their horses to dive on the forehand.. I have pages of notes from the program that I will continue to share with our SVDA readers! For now, I d like to say a huge thank-you to Bill for being such an inspirational, approachable, and patient teacher. His interaction with the horses showed a great love for them and his interaction with the riders was supportive while guiding them to better riding and training.
