PART 1: THE DRESSAGE OF RACING, or What Thoroughbred racing image data can show dressage riders By Nancy Nicholson Ph. D. Four horses illustrate the critical concept of LIMB OVERLAP, which is the timing + stresses of work done in moving a large animal (plus rider) over terrain. Three of them, the Triple Crown winners, are elite by pedigree, by stride mechanics, by physiology and because elastic jockey position stays within the demands of physics. They are easier to carry than a stiff rider: a following contact with arm aligned with rein plus their centers of mass (CoM) remain positioned over the horse s CoM (balance). Gallop leg timing order (stride phase) in extension and suspension identifies the character of effort for comparing elite gallopers (Triple Crown winners) versus slow-er gallopers. Looking at these instants can sharpen our eye for desirable gait qualities. Allowing for some variation in striding and frame rate of image capture, elite gallopers by gait analysis (Pratt & O Connor 1978, Takahashi & Hiraga 2006) have substantial advantages in mechanical efficiency over their competitors, whether or not they have the big heart mutation on their X chromosome (stallions, geldings, single/double copy mares). Big hearts make them physiologically efficient at racing because of the larger volume of blood pumped by the bigger hearts. In terms of gait mechanics: 1 ST, elite gallopers have a shorter, lower suspension that reduces shocks of limbs striking ground. The Internet myth of two suspensions in elite galloping arises because Secretariat s jockey shifted past his CoM at the Belmont finish, creating an abnormal moment of sprawl when Big Red s four legs were off the ground at the blazing speed of 16.2 meters/second (36.24 mph). In this case, and in others, the next legs to be grounded are not in position to be effective in energy transfers to the rib cage. Physics: 1) If you re in the air, you are falling at 32 feet per second per second, the acceleration of gravity. The longer you are in the air, the higher up you must be and the harder/faster you fall. Repeated impacts take a toll on the body. 2) The digital flexor energy transfers into the body generate heat (folks, there are no free lunches!). Wrapping legs with unvented materials can literally cook tendons. 2 ND, they cover more ground per stride in extension because there is an optimum time each leg is available to send the horse forward. Note Secretariat s left hind has already thrust him forward, compared to the slower Gunrunner at the same stride phase. Leg order means that instead of wasting time airborne, a leg in stance does its duty by sending the horse forward with minimum time when two legs are grounded (leg/limb overlap). Physics: the entire mass of horse + rider is either shared by overlapping legs or is absorbed by a single grounded leg. In racing gallops, this is briefer than for dressage gaits. There are physical and mental consequences for repeated sustained impacts. 3 RD, they have substantial freedom in the shoulder to set up the digital flexor catapult to biceps energy surge (horses have a motor in all four legs! Wilson et. al. 2003). 4 TH, in suspension, they are at least level gallopers, not on the forehand, common for more ordinary gallopers (next leg to touch down will be ahead of or Check our website for updates and information: Page 6 of 13

7 near girth). This is range of motion. For dressage, the horse remains in level balance when enough legs are doing their duty of supporting movement. In longer stance phases, as for passage, there is time for the grand gesture. Balancing stance and suspension is critical for transitions within and between gaits (Part 2 of this discussion). 5 TH, as Pratt & O Connor noted, they remain generally sound. This saves money on vet bills and lengthens performance shelf life. 6 TH, they are fluid movers to the eye! Observers have said they seem to be flying in the air! Japanese authors also noted that Deep Impact didn t wear out his hind shoes as fast as slow-er gallopers. 7 TH, they win races because the above advantages mean they take fewer strides per event than their slow-er competitors. Elite gallopers demonstrate the DRESSAGE ideal of LEVEL, FLUENT, PROMPT!! Not to mention soundness. There needs to be careful balance between air-time and effort in gaits. Next are the images of Triple Crown winners and one Kentucky Derby entry. They are Secretariat, American Pharoah and Deep Impact (Japan). Gunrunner was third in the 2016 Derby. Although we are focused on different gait mechanics, Triple Crown winners were ridden by jockeys who kept their center of mass above the horse s center of mass (CoM) using a following contact. Modern jockeys are light in the saddle during suspension and are pushed upward by those 4000 Joule gait energies released into extension ( martini posture or monkey crouch ). They are also elastically carried because it is less costly in energy for the horse (Pfau et. al. Check our website for updates and information: Page 7 of 13

8 2009)! Gunrunner s jockey is too far forward in the Derby photo. Part of a winning genetic and psychological cocktail is the large heart mutation on the X chromosome and a personality that loves to run. 12 REGION 2 USDF NEWS A Message from the Regional Director Summer has officially arrived in Region 2 and it has brought heat and humidity. As we work and show our horses or volunteer at Dressage related events, please take appropriate precautions to prevent heat-related problems. Remember, our 4 legged dressage partners dissipate heat more slowly than we do. I would like to thank the Region 2 Adult Clinic rider selection committee volunteers who dedicated their time to help select the Adult riders for the upcoming June USDF Adult Clinic being held at Tempel Farms. If you have not signed-up as an auditor, I recommend that you do so and watch Kathy Connelly and Betsy Steiner work with the horses and riders. There is quite a diverse selection of horses to watch. This is one not to miss. The competition to make the Region 2 FEI JR/YR Team is at a fever pitch with qualifying ending June 20, This year s NAJYRC s are being held at the Colorado Horse Park in Parker, Colorado. As you can imagine, the cost to ship horses and travel costs for your Region 2 riders and Chef will be much higher than in the past. To this end, I would ask each of you and your GMOs to consider donating whatever funds you can to help offset the cost. The JR/YR prospects are working hard to create income generating activities; however, your help would be greatly appreciated. Please send checks to the USDF office and be sure to note on the check that the funds should be made out to the USDF Region 2 JR/YR account. Don t forget all donations are tax-deductible. Interested in becoming a Dressage Judge or do you just want more dressage education? Regardless of your answer, there will be a USDF L program session A and B held in Albion, MI later this year.
