2008 AHA CONVENTION REPORT submitted by Kristi Herbst NOVEMBER 20TH 8AM began the Annual Arabian Horse Association Convention held in Denver Colorado. We were truly honored to have the Columbine High School Bagpipers entertain us for the opening ceremonies with the National Anthem, The Canadian Anthem, and the truly stirring America The Beautiful. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic, devoted Arabian Horse lovers in one area. There is no denying the passion the Arabian horse stirs up!! There were many committee meetings to attend to discuss resolutions. Ideas were heard through out the convention to help improve, and ensure and protect our beautiful breed of horses for many generations to come. One of the biggest concerns I heard was an apparent disconnect between Breeders and Performance Horse riders and trainers and also differences in riding and showing performance horses and halter horses. This is a serious issue for our breed as we try to improve the overall athletic and performance values of our horses and not just have horses that stand up and look pretty. Sheilia Varian made a moving talk about staying with the current halter scoring system and giving it a chance to succeed, there were resolutions to eliminate the current system. - they were defeated!! It is important that judges have a set ideal to judge by to provide some uniform qualities in our breed. There will always be personal likes and dislikes of judges so anything they can have to use as a tool will only help us all out. The Breeders Forum that was held discussed the decline of Breeding and Registered foals and the overall promotion that is needed to market Arabians and to continue to educate new breeders on responsible breeding that will help to ensure the quality and future of our great breed. There was so much excitement all thru the convention about The Arabian Horse Galleries being built in Lexington, KY at the Horse park. This facility will permanently display the story of the Arabian Horse to more than 1 million people who visit the park annually. Many artifacts, items donated by early breeders, the Trust, and countless other spectacular displays will be available to the public. Fund raising is in process to ensure that this historical account is the best it can be, Disney engineers have been employed to make this interactive learning experience for all who go thru it one they will never forget. The Arabian Horse Foundation reported it has gone from private to a public foundation for added tax benefits for contributors. They also have a new website, wall of Honor and 30, dollars given out for youth scholarships, for research, 10, given out to Equine rescue entities that have taken in Arabian Horses. Arabian Marketing reported that a new documentary is being completed, and a cartoon starring Arabian horses will air on Discovery Kids approx. 12 million viewers 7-14 years of age may see this!!! American Horse Council reported that there were 2 new tax provisions for horse owners consult tax specialists for details and a 5 year Farm Bill passed declaring Horses were Livestock so that they can be eligible for Emergency relief funds in the event of a diseaster. Working to ensure access to public lands thru the Equine Heritage Act. Many want to shut horses out of parks and land that has always been traditionally used by Equestrians, this will give us a voice!!! Sweepstakes reported Growing numbers and per point was paid out to all horses earning point money. Please go on web site for other changes in sweepstakes!! New officers were elected and we said farewell to Myron Krause as president his speech was emotional and heartwarming a huge amount of gratitude was felt for his strength and time spent with AHA as president. Please go to the web site for information on the new officers it is an exciting time for AHA. As always it is a great pleasure to serve as your delegate and I have only touched on a small portion of what was covered at convention. The web site has full coverage of the resolutions and how they stand approved or disapproved and as always you may contact me at ozarkmanor@wildblue.net or for any questions. Sincerely, Krsiti Herbst

ANKY TO REPRESENT HOLLAND IN DRESSAGE AND REINING?? Equestrian Games (WEG). It will not be a surprise to most people as the 2008 Olympic Games Gold medallist looks set to stay at the top of her sport for many years to come but what is a surprise is that she wants to represent Holland in Reining! Top Dutch dressage rider Anky van Grunsven is determined to participate in the 2010 World At an Olympic celebration party with her family she was given a Western saddle as a present and so she decided to take reining lessons with her friend Rieky Young. "I think it would be super to ride at the WEG in Kentucky both in dressage and reining," she said. FROM MAHA PRESIDENT TONY REID Hello MAHA! We are just about 5 weeks away from our Class A Show and I wanted to update you on some changes that will take place at the show. We have a new order for the Jumping classes on Friday evening to make the show run more efficiently. Please visit the website at to see these changes and a few other updates to the site. Progressive Barn party information is also on there as well as 2009 High Point Forms. A friendly reminder that the Host Hotel (Hilton Garden Inn--Lake St. Louis) is offering a special rate for MAHA exhibitors until February 18th. Please click on their logo on the Class A Show page for easy reservations. This hotel is just minutes from the show and has wonderful amenities. I will be finishing up plans for our next meeting date and will publish that information on the website asap. We are looking at an April date and the location will be at Herbst Farms in Farmington, MO. I look forward to seeing you all at the show and hope that this year is another great year for MAHA. Best of luck to you all! Tony

MAHA Banquet Report I just couldn t wait to tell everyone how wonderful our banquet was! Adults = 80 x $20 = $1600 Kids = 17 x $12 = $204 Total: $1804 Silent Auction=$461 Banquet Expense = $ High Point: Income = $1145 Expense= Awards=$ Ribbons - $ Most importantly of all, over 55 MAHA members were represented at the banquet. We had several guests supporting members and the club by their attendance including: Liz Rogan who traveled from Nebraska to present Region XI Youth awards and Mary Voertmann who contributed numerous items for our silent auction and set the silent auction up with Kim Amsden assisting. Our silent auction was fabulous with over 70 items, next year I bet more folks will come prepared to bid and buy and continue to donate! Our clothing sale at the show should be awesome based on this response and the large amount of kids MAHA has as members. Remember MAHA is a part of that village that it takes to raise a child! I also want to thank Pam Rodden for the excellent picture DVD that added so much to our banquet. I would love to say we should have a new one every year with contributed pictures, but Pam might not think the same as I do on that! The entire banquet I feel was a huge success, everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and short of the microphone hitch, I think everything went very smoothly. We were able to meet and socialize with both new and old members. I heard a lot of members ask about getting involved in programs in both MAHA and Region XI. I think the trivia was great fun that added to the atmosphere to fill a little of that time for people not actually getting awards, etc I would contribute a lot of the success to Tony Reid and the officers of MAHA who are working to make the club the best it can be, to meet the needs of the members, empowering people to be involved, feel welcomed and have an interest and share in the common bond we all have, the Arabian horse and our love for it! I would be remiss if I didn t mention Kristi Herbst and her efforts to organize, decorate and set up such a wonderful banquet for all of us to have the opportunity to share in. I m looking forward to a very successful Class A show and 2009 in MAHA, this banquet sets the tone for a fabulous year! Remember it will take all of us working together again to make our show the success that it has been and will continue to be! See you in March at the show! Respectfully submitted, Treasurer, Kathryn Lewis 2008 AHA Convention Denver, Colorado November 19-22, 2008 By Sandi Lewis, MAHA Delegate I arrived in Denver on November 19 to 70 degree weather. Who would have known? I packed for cold weather! The first meeting I attended was the Sport Horse Committee meeting on 11/19. At this meeting we discussed 10 resolutions. The SH committee had no action on resolution # 9, 10, 19, 20, 21, 33 and 34. Resolution 22 was discussed. This dealt with nosebands, halter color and type of halter to be used in the in hand classes. It was decided to add verbage to the rules stating that nosebands are optional but if they are used then an exhibitor must use the list of approved nosebands that are contained

in the Dressage and Hunter/Jumper section of the USEF rule book. It was also decided to put this statement in the rules, Halter needs to be a plain leather stable halter. Resolution 23 was just housekeeping. Resolution 24 was tabled and sent back to committee since we completed a survey just recently and information in that survey needs to be incorporated in this resolution. Sport Horse Nationals 2008 was reported to have gone very well. SHN 2009 will be 6 days long-tuesday to Sunday. The committee thinks there will be 700+ horses. The new facility in Kentucky is huge. You need a bicycle, moped or golf cart to get around. The stalls are good. The Patron package will cost $1200 and include a golf cart. Dressage Training level through 2 nd level will be split Arab and Half/Anglo Arab. PSG will have an ATR class. Training level will have a Junior Arab and Half/Anglo Arab class also. Later that evening on 11/19 I attended the Plenary Session. This is where all that have submitted resolutions can come to speak to the delegates about each resolution. I found this two hour session to be real helpful to make decisions on how to vote during the convention. The resolutions were presented and delegates asked questions. There was some heated exchanged but for the most part it was very well structured. On 11/20 I attended the Opening ceremonies. The ceremony was very moving with Bag Pipes and the Columbine High School Choir sung the National Anthem. Myron Krause, President of AHA, gave the State of the Association Address. Ron Anderson of the Credential Committee stated there were 533 potential delegates. At this time 360 were pre registered and 333 had credentialed. The treasurer s report was given. The treasurer forecasts 2009 revenues to decrease 10% or 1.2 million. The budget for 2009 shows a net income of $67,000. Some of the reasons for decrease in revenues are Decrease in National Events, Membership decline and Sponsorship decline by 1/2. Later that day I attended a second Sport Horse Committee meeting. We discussed an Educational DVD that is available to judges to aid them in selecting the horse that meets the criteria by which they are judging. The Sport Horse Nationals 2008 were discussed again. It was held in Idaho and there were 330 horses which was 40 horses less than the 2006 year that SHN was held in Idaho. Sport Horse Nationals 2009 will be held in Kentucky. 6 days with a projection of 700+ horses. There will be 3 rings of dressage all 6 days. There will be 4 sections of Sport Horse each day with 2 panels of judges. Under saddle and Driving classes will be held in the evening. There is a new arena with 400 stalls adjacent. This arena is ¾ from the Dressage Arena. All stalls are on asphalt except the portable stalls. The date for 2009 SHN is September 22-27, Another meeting I attended on 11/20 was the Dressage Committee Meeting. We discussed that the committee proposed last year to increase the dressage scores for awards and we were told that the IT department could not do it for 2009 and on without going retroactive. It was voted on at the 2007 and approved to do it anyway by the delegates and now AHA has figured out how to increase the dressage scores for 2009 and on. The SHN for 2008 and 2009 were discussed. This was the same information as I reported in the meeting for the Sport Horse Committee. The USDF awards are being revamped for These awards will be a metal with the horses name engraved on the back. Walk/Trot Intro for 10 & under riders will get achievement awards based on number of horses in the class. A new award system for riders was asked to be established. Marilyn Weber is in charge of getting this system established to be presented and approved by the committee. Lastly that evening 11/20 I attended the Region XI Caucus meeting as the Secretary. Please see Region XI secretary report for in depth report of this meeting. On 11/21 I attended the meet the candidates Forum. This meeting gave each candidate an opportunity to speak about themselves and their ideas for AHA. This gave me a better insight as to which candidate would fit for the priorities of MAHA. After lunch the next General Session was held. I attended this session. Again there were 533 eligible delegates with 375 credentialed. Glen Petty gave his EVP report. His direction will be the following: Promotion of Affordable Activities, Promotion of Local or Regional Rides, Expand Youth Program, National Shows increased participation. The Initiatives are: New Website, Business Deployment Plan, Gallery support and cooperation, Office Capital Improvements. The concerns are: Staff Retention and Corporate Partners lack of Expansion. AHA ranks behind Walking horses and miniature horses and ahead of Appy s for number of registration. He wants to continue to have a spirit of Working Together. Then Club Excellence awards were given out. We voted on many of the resolutions. Elections were also held during this session. We then were treated to a surprise. Thunder the Denver Broncos mascot rode right into the Convention meeting. It was real exciting. He was a perfect horse. He never even manured on anything! We then were dismissed and could go up and take pictures of Thunder and pet him. On 11/22 I attended the final General Session. The AHYA report was given by Annalise Himmel, President. The 2008 Youth convention had 205 delegates credentialed. The theme for this convention was Christmas in July. Next the Arabian Horse Foundation spoke. The Foundation has started several scholarships and they have grant money for research. There was a marketing and MDP presentation. The biggest project in 2008 is the Support of Arabian Horse Galleries. In fall of 2009 it is expected that 1.5 million visitors will see this gallery. It will be the Highest profile breed promotion that AHA embarks on. A video of the Gallery was shown. Region XI gave $3000 to the Gallery. The Region XI donations were from the following: Sandi Lewis-$200 Debbie Cain-$300

Dave Waggoner-$200 Larry Kissel-$200 Glen True-$200 Angela Oneil-$100 Wanda Funk-$100 Sherry Amtower-$100 Val Waggoner-$100 Carol Baker-$100 Leon Matthias-$100 Charlotte Kletecka-$100 Carolyn Hasbrook-$100 Marilyn Weber-$100 And $1000 from the Region XI budget. At the convention $43,000 was raised for the Arabian Horse Galleries. It was then reported that Modern Arabian Horse Magazine is the 2007 USEF Pegasus awards #1 Equine Magazine. It was reported that the 2008 Farm Bill Passed and it declared horses are livestock. The Sweepstakes report was given. Show participants got $20 per point. Breeder nominator got $2 per point. Owner of Sire got $1 per point. Judges and Steward Commission reported the names of the 2009 National Horse Show Judges. The commission sent DVD to all judges on the Arabian Scoring System. They developed the score pads and began using them. New Judges were provided training on the new scoring system and other training session were created for past judges to attend. There are 282 AHA Judges with 153 having National/Regional Status and 129 are credited judges. There are 131 steward. The next convention will be held in Reno Nevada. The rest of the resolutions were voted reviewed and were acted upon. It was then announced the results of the election: Lance Wlaters-President and Dale Harvill-Vice President. Later that evening Chuck and I attended the Presidents Banquet. The Region volunteers were awarded along with the Presidents awards given out. The food was great. The group FACE! was awesome. This was a singing group that used their voices for singing and the instruments. If anyone would like to see them in action, I took a short video clip! Respectfully submitted, Sandi Lewis the next to ride. I called for her while she rode her last class. She came out with tears of joy in her eyes. I do not remember what ribbon she won but I do remember she scored higher then me!!! We went home late that night to more fog. Sherri had to get out of the truck and lead me accross the old bridge on the road she lived on because I could not see in front of me. I told her when she got back into the car I was afraid the police were going to stop me for trying to run over an old crippled lady! We laughed until we cried! Sherri Johnson, one of the Founding Members of SLADS has sadly passed away. SLADS honored Sherri last year at the Annual Awards banquet. I remember Sherri as a great instructor and wonderful friend. She always could instill confidence in her riders when they could not find their own. My most recent memory of Sherri was the following. Sherri bought a horse named Goofus. She wanted desperately to ride in her very last show. Her leg muscles necessary to round a horse and even stay on a horse was giving up on her. I would go over to her house for several months and get her new horse going. I would ride the horse for about 30 minutes and then she would then ride him for about 5-10 minutes which is all she could handle. She insisted on going to the show. The morning of the show was very foggy. We loaded Goofus and went to the last SLADS schooling show held at Bridlespur. I rode Goofus in his first class to make sure he was safe. The second class Sherri said she could ride. I got Sherri on Goofus and lead her to the arena. Fortunately she was Below is her Obituary published in the Daily Journal Today, Sunday, December 28, Sherri Johnson BONNE TERRE-Sherri Ann Johnson, 64 of Bonne Terre passed away December 25, 2008 at her residence.
