1 THE WOODEND WHINNY Hi all, PRESIDENT S REPORT By Russell Manton Welcome to the first rally for 2012! We ve been enjoying some fine weather which makes it even harder to believe the wintery conditions we suffered through on the first Sunday in December at our rally up at Sanitorium Lake! However, the trail ride was extremely well attended and everyone had a great time despite the weather. Thanks to Bree and Tess for organising the games, sorry that due to the conditions that we could play only one! Thanks also to Melissa for arranging the clinic in the January holidays, it was well attended and a great success. Speaking of great successes, the show on Australia Day was another tremendous event and a great revenue raiser! There are many people to thank for making this such a great event, which I will do on Sunday during our lunch period. A special mention of our great sponsors, including Racing Victoria jockey Craig Atkinson, who personally donated $100 for our supreme champion award on the day. There was a committee meeting on Monday night, at which we discussed membership numbers and the cost of membership and the financial long-term impact of our current expenses. Some decisions have been made regarding the cost of membership moving into the next PC year which begins in June; more about these on Sunday as well. While we have a number of new members welcome to them! two of our longterm members have taken a break from pony club while their family embarks on a great adventure. The Hansford twins, Mimi and Freya, have moved to Broome for a year while their mother Kirsty works at an indigenous school. We wish them all the best of luck and look forward to welcoming them back upon their return at the end of this school year. Also, congratulations to the Sell family, not only on the eventful arrival of baby Louise but to Mick for training five runners who all won their races at the Hanging Rock race meeting at Kyneton (see article later in newsletter). And, finally, congratulations to committee member Phil Desmet, who was a dual GOLD MEDALLIST at the Victorian Masters Games, winning the showjumping on his 18hh warmblood Carlos and then following up with a win in the dressage on his daughter Tayla's ever-consistent horse Liam (Coldstream Eastern Ridge). Nice to see the parents doing well and showing the kids, by example, the path to success! Cheers, Russ Woodend Pony Club Inc., P.O. Box 277, Woodend, Victoria, Association No. A D Page 1

3 DISTRICT COMMISSIONER S REPORT By Melissa Cowburn Hi kids, Welcome to another year of pony club, I hope you all had a fantastic break and lots of riding over the holidays. It was great to see so many of your smiling faces at our show; a big thank you to all the mums, dads, grandparents and non-riding members that helped on the day. This rally we have lots of wonderful classes and, for your free session, I have a great DVD for you and your mums and dads to watch called Presenting To Win. It is all about getting your horse or pony ready for a show, so I hope you enjoy it. I will try to have a different and interesting DVD for you to watch each rally, so while your ponies are having a break you can still learn something. In regard to the groups, I will be having a close look at your riding and will speak to your instructors, as I know a lot of you will have improved over the holidays, so don t panic if you feel you are in the wrong group as we may need to make some changes. Feel free to speak to me on the day if you have concerns. We have a fun and exiting year ahead with our zone flat, games and musical rides coming up; I will have sheets out at lunch time for those of you that are interested to write your names down. It does require a bit of commitment from you, mum and dad and practice sessions weekly leading up to the event, but it s a great experience. Just a bit of housekeeping Firstly, can you please me if you are not attending a rally this will help me keep the groups even, so that everyone gets the most out of there day. Also, can I please ask parents not to approach or coach your child from the sidelines while they are under instruction. This has been an issue the instructors have bought to my attention. It is not only disrespectful to our instructors, but it is distracting and dangerous to your child and the others in the group. If you have an issue, please speak to me. If children are not listening to instruction and parents are interfering, the child will be asked to leave the group. I would also like to remind you that our designated lungeing area is the handy mount area as it is fully enclosed and the safest place to lunge, so please do not lunge out in the open or in the entrance of the sand arena. If you must lunge in the sand, please do it at the far end so that other children can get in to warm up. I would like to welcome new members Paige, Lincoln, Amber, Ashley and Isidore to their first pony club rally - please make them feel welcome. On a final note, well done to our fantastic team of riders that represented Woodend at our Central Zone Dressage and Show Jumping Championships in Kyneton last weekend. They all did a fantastic job and 4 of our riders are going to the state championships! This is a huge achievement! Well done Emma C., Emily S., Tayla, Tahnee, Lily and Kelsey. And I mustn t forget Tanya and Jemma for competing at the Summer Royal on the same day, well done girls! See you all Sunday, Melissa Page 3

We try to rotate the duties as fairly as possible. Unfortunately, some of our members have not been sharing the duties fairly by not making themselves available when rostered on. It is perfectly understandable that sometimes the selected dates do not suit some of us. However, we all get the same amount of notice via the newsletter to arrange our personal calendars. If you are not going to be available for a rostered duty, please make alternative arrangements by swapping with another member. A phone call is all it takes to ensure our rally days are catered for!! 11 An important message from our member Jacinta Cooke-Oliver: Jacinta (centre) with Hannah and Annabel Page 11
12 A message from our former D.C. Ronnie Graham: Hello Woodend Pony Clubbers, This is your old D.C. here, Ronnie G., thought I would let you all know that Sarah, Jack and myself just recently returned from a Christmas holiday trip to Queensland. The reason why I m telling you all this, is that this trip could not have happened without you guys; the 'gift' I received at my last rally helped kick start this trip off. You guys were there, driving the plane for us so to speak! The generosity of the parents, families and friends of Woodend Pony Club really was appreciated and it really blew me away when John Winter handed over the gift at my last lunch-time meeting last June. We attended all the theme parks Wet N Wild, Movieworld, Sea World, White Water World and, as you can see in the photo, Dreamworld (photo taken by our very own camera shy Sarah) of Jack and I at the front gate. I had a couple of early [6am] morning swims at Surfer s Paradise, which was beautiful, never ever done that before, I also attended an 'Elvis' concert on the foreshore and was present at the launch of the Magic Millions (that s something for Frank C. and the punters!). It was certainly hard coming back and facing reality and going back to work, something we all know about! But once again thanking you my Woodend friends for helping us achieve this wonderful trip, you really really are amazing people and I will never forget you guys! I hope all is well in pony club land, I m sure it is as you are the best bunch of people! Take care and hope to see you all soon in the near future, Yours So Kindly, Ronnie, Sarah & Jack Graham xxx Page 12
