1 News letter March Rally, Committee PRESIDENT Jenny Devine , VICE PRESIDENT Gabby Adam Our first time back at the Magenup grounds after a long break and we welcomed back old and new members at our first rally for the year. Our Instructors for the weekend were Nadine Merewether, Cindy Oud and Liz Tollarzo on Saturday and Nid and Cindy on Sunday. We all worked on the theme for the Rally which was Control of line and tempo with correctly ridden school figures and calmness and relaxation. Niddy discussed setting goals for ourselves and our horses. We talked about all the activities that can keep us motivated and different types of goals besides competitions we can work towards. Remember, goal setting is an important part of becoming successful with your riding, so don t forget to have a read of them at least every couple of months to access if you are still on track with achieving them throughout the year. Also, you may have to re-access your goals as circumstances do change. If you can take a bit of time to go through your goal sheet and hand in a copy at the next rally, we can discuss them as a club later in the year. Thank you to everyone, especially the new members, who stayed and helped put everything away at the end of the rally. It makes it so much easier if everyone in the second last lesson of the day stays and helps. See you all at the April rally. Don t forget to let me know if you re coming by the gmail Didy Massey Rally Organiser SECRETARY Sharon Gurney PO Box 487 Armadale WA 6992 TREASURER Nicky Higgs ORGANISER Didy Massey or UNIFORM COORDINATOR Helen Bennett NEWSLETTER Amy Morris or amorris2991@gmail.com OTHER COMMITTEE MEMBERS Sarah Baldwin - Fundraising Leanne Morris - General enquiries DAWA WEBSITE & dresssageassocwa@gmail.com We are on Facebook so please LIKE us and stay constantly up to date with what is happening with in the club
2 Rally 13th & 14th April 2013 This month s rally theme is - - a) Rhythm, suppleness and contact (the first 3 points in the training scale) - b) Rider position. Note that training themes have been incorporated into the program to give instructors a guideline only. Obviously, each instructor will assess his/her riders ability and understanding of the topic and structure their coaching accordingly. Lunch time lectures Saturday Lecture: Anita Budgeon will be presenting a very informative lecture about equine nutrition in West Australian Conditions. Sunday Lecture: Karen Bowman will be talking to us about ring craft, since the competition season is upon us once again. Instructors Saturday: Cindy Oud, Liz Tollarzo and Nadine Merewether Sunday: Cindy Oud and Nadine Merewether Saturday Put up arenas everyone!!! 9.00 Mounted instruction Mounted instruction 12 noon Lunch 2.00 Mounted instruction 3.00 Mounted instruction Sunday 9.00 Mounted instruction Mounted instruction 12 noon Lunch 2.00 Mounted instruction 3.00 Mounted instruction Take Down Arenas (everyone) Riders Please Note: Can all riders in the first lesson on Sunday afternoon please wait and help pull down arenas, as it makes it very late for the last lesson to finish, put horses away and then pull in arenas. Confirming your place. For the next rally we need to know numbers by April 9 at the latest. We cannot take additional names after this date. This is so that we can organise enough instructors to cover our classes, and so the class groups can be constructed and confirmed by instructors. Notice of cancellation is also important as it greatly affects both lesson size and composition if you re unable to make it to the rally because of a last minute glitch, please let Didy know, so we can re-arrange classes without causing hassles for other riders, or for our instructors. 3 For Sale Schumacher Dynamic saddle 3 yrs old, black, in great condition with only a little wear under the stirrup leathers. Size 2 (17") with medium/wide gullet, which could be adjusted. Unmounted Price:$2600 ono Contact Nicky (Oakford) higgsnik@yahoo.com.au or mobile Rider's Position If you had to pick the most important factor in training a riding horse, then it would have to be the rider s position in the saddle. It also happens to be one of the hardest things for a rider to achieve and maintain through all the paces. If you do not have the correct position or seat in the saddle then you will not be able to give the aids correctly, you will unbalance the horse, which in turn affects the rhythm of your horse s paces. When people talk about position or seat they are usually referring to your seat bones and pelvis. However, your head, neck, body, arms, hips, legs and feet will all have an impact on your seat. when you sit on your two seat bones, on either side of the saddle, and your pubic bone at the front. It is also important to understand that girls and boys are built differently in the pelvic area. If you look at these two diagrams you will notice major differences: What are your seat bones? Your seat bones are part of your pelvis (pelvic girdle) and as the name implies you sit on them. Try sitting on a hard, unpadded chair and you will soon feel them. You have two seat bones, with one inside each cheek. Don t confuse these bones with your coccyx (tailbone) which is the last three joints found at the bottom of your spine. One of the worst mistakes a rider can make is to put their weight on their tailbone rather over the top on their seat bones and pubic bone (pubis). Many classical riders refer to a three-point seat as the triangle formed
4 Saturday Lecture - Anita Budgeon Originally from the UK, I have been involved with horses for over 45 years. I have competed in showjumping, eventing and dressage to Advanced Medium level. In the UK I established my Spanish Horse Stud and for more than 10 years bred Hispano-Arabes. I ve been hugely involved with Spanish horses for more than 25 years and for 10 years was a member of a high school display team with my Purebred Andalusian stallion and I also won many championship breed and show titles in the UK with my Spanish horses. I brought my graded multi-champion HispanoArabe with me to Australia in 2008 and train regularly with Manolo Mendez. I am a freelance coach and teach many clients at different levels and coach for Wanneroo Adult Riders. I have judged at local pony clubs, the WA Spanish Horse State Championships, The Perth Royal Show and in Sydney at The Spanish Horse National Championships. I am the sub-editor for Baroque Horse International maga- zine, copy-editor for Pura Raza Espanol, the British Spanish Horse Association magazine, and editor of the Ferrari Club of WA magazine. With knowledge gained over many years with breeding and competition horses, nutrition has been a passion of mine for over 30 years. I have given nutrition talks for several riding clubs here in WA and over East. The variations in available feed products compared to the UK and the unique, specific mineral/soil deficiencies within Australia, particularly in Western Australia, has led myself and my husband to import the premium boutique Blue Chip Feed balancers six months ago to assist with these deficiencies, and we now sponsor two young local riders, a WA multichampionship winning show horse and support and sponsor many local and major shows in WA and over East. Member of the Month Emma Middleton As our member of the month you receive a gift voucher from Budget Stockfeeds and a DAWA mug. You are rewarded for your good presentation and great help at rallies. Thank you for your contribution to the Dressage Association of W.A. The member of the month award is presented to the one rider each month who stands out for good presentation of themselves and their horse, as well as helping with tasks at the rallies. Good presentation includes DAWA uniform as well as general neatness and cleanliness. The recipient each month is selected by the Committee present over the weekend. For more information on what you should be wearing, and how to present your horse, please refer to the first newsletter for the year on dress and gear standards.
