1 Newsletter November Committee President Jenny Devine , Vice President Didy Massey , Secretary Sharon Gurney Kentucky Dve West Darling Downs 6122 Treasurer Robyn McMurray , Erin and Costa October s Rally Report Once again our October rally ran smoothly. It was great to see Fleur Lister back after her successful participation in the National para-equestrian championships. She was assisted by Terina Fairbrother who nursed and walked Gus for hours until he was fit to compete after he incurred a stable injury just before the competition. Thanks to Helen and Ian Bennet for switching our clubhouse fridge when it broke down. It was also great to see Helen s Loui back at the rally. Horses who stood out at the rally were Kerry Dyjak s Rusty and Purdey Armstrong s Homemaker. The work of both these horses has noticeably improved. Also, Di Pethic s Scooter was beautifully presented. All these horses are a real credit to their owners. For the November rally we will be enjoying a sausage sizzle for lunch on Saturday. Please bring your 2011 goal sheets and ideas for lectures you would like next year. Rally Organiser Cindy Oud cohorse@hotmail.com Uniform Coordinator Susan Leeming , sleeming@iinet.net.au Newsletter Didy Massey or didymassey@iinet.net.au DAWA website See you at the next rally
2 Rally 12th & 13th November 2011 This month s rally theme is - a) Lateral work shoulder-in, travers and half-pass - b) Rider position. Note that training themes have been incorporated into the program to give instructors a guideline only. Obviously, each instructor will assess his/her riders ability and understanding of the topic and structure their coaching accordingly. Lunch time lectures Remember that lectures are open to non-members for $5 per person (so invite a friend if you wish). If you have a topic you d like to see covered, please let a committee member know. Instructors Saturday: Cindy Oud and Nadine Merewether Sunday: Cindy Oud and Nadine Merewether Saturday 8.00 Put up arenas everyone 9.00 Mounted instruction Mounted instruction 12 noon Lunch 2.00 Mounted instruction 3.00 Mounted instruction Sunday 9.00 Mounted instruction Mounted instruction 12 noon Lunch 2.00 Mounted instruction 3.00 Mounted instruction Take Down Arenas (everyone) Riders Please Note: Can all riders in the first lesson on Sunday afternoon please wait and help pull down arenas, as it makes it very late for the last lesson to finish, put horses away and then pull in arenas. Confirming your place has changed. Please note that you now need to confirm if you are riding with Cindy Oud if you haven t already put your name down on the list at the last rally. For the next rally we need to know numbers by November 8 at the latest. We cannot take additional names after this date. This is so that we can organise enough instructors to cover our classes, and so the class groups can be constructed and confirmed by instructors. Notice of cancellation is also important as it greatly affects both lesson size and composition if you re unable to make it to the rally because of a last minute glitch, please let Cindy know, so we can re-arrange classes without causing hassles for other riders, or for our instructors. 3 Rally programme Saturday & Sunday lunch Go through your goals and see what you have achieved this year while enjoying a wind up sausage sizzle for lunch. Remember to bring along your copy of your goals you set at the beginning of the year. Even if you are not riding at the rally for one reason or another we would like to see you for the lunch time discussions and free sausage sizzle. Member of the Month Di Pethic As our member of the month you receive a gift voucher from Budget Stockfeeds and a DAWA mug. You are rewarded for your good presentation and great help at rallies. Thank you for your contribution to the Dressage Association of W.A. The member of the month award is presented to the one rider each month who stands out for good presentation of themselves and their horse, as well as helping with tasks at the rallies. Good presentation includes DAWA uniform as well as general neatness and cleanliness. The recipient each month is selected by the Committee present over the weekend. For more information on what you should be wearing, and how to present your horse, please refer to the first newsletter for the year on dress and gear standards.
4 Annual General Meeting The AGM and awards evening will be held on Saturday 3 December at 7.00pm at Jenny Devine s place (details will be provided at the November rally). We would like to know if you are coming for catering purposes and there will be a list for you to add your names to at the November rally. Partners are very welcome to come along too. If anyone would like to nominate a DAWA member to be part of the committee, nominations should be provided in writing to the Secretary (Sharon) prior to the commencement of the AGM (forms will be available at the November rally, or from the Secretary via ). The person nominated must sign the nomination to confirm their acceptance. If you re interested in being on the committee, please feel free to talk to any of the current committee about it. It is good to be able to share the jobs around a bit We also require at the AGM a $50 non-refundable deposit for your membership for 2012, if you would like your position to be held. We need to know just how many new members we are able to accept. Notice of AGM Awards Night, and End of Year Social BBQ (partners welcome) Saturday 3 December 2011, 7pm Meat and soft drinks supplied at $10 per head. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. BYO chair and alcohol. Further details will be provided at the November rally RSVP Jenny Devine by 8 December Handy Hint 1: Keeping Flies Away When Riding Your Horse A sweaty, warm horse on a still sunny day will often attract hordes of small house flies (Musca domestica) which can be annoying, distract the horse and get under the rim of your helmet and around your eyes when riding. Smearing on a combined sunscreen and fly repellant cream before you ride can help keep them away from your own face and arms, but they can still annoy your horse There is a simple remedy. Apply a long acting oily fly repellant preparation, such as Vetsense Flygon in no-noise pump pack, to key areas of your horse after saddling up. Apply one small squirt to each elbow, each hock, under the front of the chest, and a two larger squirts to a tissue and carefully wipe over the forelock, forehead and down the mane. And lastly, apply some to the end brush of the tail - simply gather the end hairs of the tail up as a bundle and apply 3 squirts of the repellant As the horse works, he will swish his tail around to the areas where flies are landing or annoying him and apply the repellant to the hair himself. It remains for up to 2 days, even on a wet horse in a paddock. It is slightly oily so as to extend its action, so it can stain rugs a little and attract dust, but the oily residue is easily sponged off with warm, soapy wat
5 September Rally Notes The Equine Travel First Aid Kit Items to be included in kit A variety of bandages: Elastoplast 7 10 cm wide (x6) Vetwrap (x2) [NB: Exchange these for new ones every 6 months] Crepe bandage (7 ½cm x 5cm) (x2) Electrical or gaffer tape Wadding (gamgee, baby napp ies or similar absorbent material) Bandage scissors Wound cleaner - Saline solution Antiseptic, e.g. Betadine or spray type (pump) or ointment Cold pack - Instant cold pack, e.g. Rapidgell (but not for open wounds) Anti inflammatory, e.g. Arnica cream Clean sponge and bucket Disposable towel, e.g. Chux Insect repellent, e.g. Stingose Stethoscope Thermometer Notes about your horse s normal temperature (am and pm) and heart rate (resting heart rate, etc.) [See below.] Vet s phone number Pen, pencil and paper for observations Molasses for encouraging consumption of water Syringe to administer fluid Rehydration medication: e.g.: Recharge or Restore syringe/paste Arnica (tincture) for colic Clay poultice Note that most of these items have a shelf life. It s not enough to own an Equine First Aid kit: the items should be regularly checked and out of date items replaced Directions for treating common equine medical problems away from home Handy Hint 2 : Avoiding Static Shocks When Taking off a Synthetic Rug: Synthetic and cotton rug material can generate static electricity as the rug is pulled off a horse s body when it is warm or you are getting ready to saddle up for training. The electricity is generated as rug material slides over the horse s hair, which then provides a spark of electricity from the horse s body to the rug as it leaves the rump or sides of the horse. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 volts of static electricity can be generated by the friction of the rug sliding over the hair, which is similar to an electric fence shock to you or your horse If you remove the rug in a dark stable at night, you may see and hear the crack of the spark as it jumps from the rug back onto the horse as the rug is removed. This can give the horse an uncomfortable and frightening electrical shock, which can make the horse jump and possibly even kick out at you and the rug as it slides off. Even if you virtually gather up and lift the rug off, static electricity can still be generated on a dry horse. The generation of this electrical charge can be eliminated as you slide off the rug by keeping one hand on the horse as you remove the rug. This allows the charge to go to ground through the horse s body as it is generated, rather than being accumulated as a full voltage shock as the final edge of the rug leaves the horse s body. The static electricity is also reduced if the rug is washed in fabric conditioner, which eliminates the friction between the rug and the horse s hair as the rug is removed. (These hints are courtesy of Zilco Rugs). Also, washing your horse once weekly in Kohnke s Own Kleen-Sheen shampoo which contains a built-in hair conditioner, will also minimise the static electricity produced as you slide off the horse s rug. It also helps to repel dust and stains for up to a week.
