Newsletter November 2018 Presidents Message Courtenay & District Fish & Game Protective Association P.O. Box 3177 Courtenay, B.C. V9N 5N4 Fred Bates President * Gail Eggiman Vice President * John Shepherd Vice President * Elaine Blackburn Treasurer * Mary Lynn Doubinen Secretary The year seems to be speeding by. It has been a very busy summer, but thanks to all the help, we have accomplished much. We will be seeking membership approvals over the next couple of months for the budget, which has been circulated, and the new policies, which will be introduced to the membership for approval soon. This will help clear up any areas that were either not stated in the constitution and bylaws, or were a little confusing. This board has been a very committed group and I'm pleased to be working with them because each one takes responsibility for his/her role. The return of volunteers for the board advisory group on bylaws is much appreciated. The nominations committee, work with the school district and college, financial management, public relations (please give some thoughts and ideas on a mascot), the conservation group all have been making great progress. It would be great to have these issues complete at this time, but we feel all of these issues must be presented to the members for a vote. While some can be simply presented and voted upon, others need to be presented to the members in advance of a vote to be dealt with appropriately. Please do your part by attending the meetings and voting. There are very positive vibes out there which makes the work enjoyable. A big thank you to all members who have been stepping up. Sincerely, Fred Bates President
Shotgun Report We at the Shotgun venue have entered our slow season. Our weather has turned typically fall-like with coolers days, lots of rain (in September, no less) and the grass turned back from brown to green with a vengeance! Lots of people away hunting and rain-outs have already happened far too soon in the fall season. However, we press on Regular trap, skeet and 5-stand shooting is still occurring every Thursday and Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm with our regular Sporting Clays circuit event (but open to all) the first Saturday of each month. In late September, we hosted a PITA registered trap shoot sponsored by the Vancouver Island Shooting League with several shooters from up and down the Island taking part. We also hosted a fun shoot for employees of Nelson Roofing and Sheet Metal of Courtenay. Hopefully everyone involved had a good time. As most of those attending were non-shooters, we had several volunteers available to lend a hand and demonstrate safe firearms handling as well as to provide tips to blasting those pesky 45 mph orange targets from the sky. Congratulations as well to youth shooter Chris Watters who won the Wes Cox Perfect Score competition for the month of August. Chris accumulated 5 rounds of 25 straight, mostly during a single scheduled Island Skeet Association event. And once again, Lorne Wigard is the September winner for the 3rd time in the past 6 months. Congratulations Lorne! As far as upcoming events are concerned, watch for the announcement of our annual Hog and Gobbler event TBA for early December, just in time for turkey season! Congratulations Lisa! Our own Lisa Cunningham has just returned from the NSSA World Skeet Championships in San Antonio, TX and did us all proud! During the 8-day event she earned her Class C and Concurrent pins in her age category in competition with nearly 80 other women and over 800 competitors overall. During the grueling 8-day event, competitors shoot singles and doubles in all gauges (12, 20, 28 and.410). Lisa also coaches an evening ladies program for beginners at our shotgun venue during the t (continued next page)
Shotgun Report (continued from previous page) spring and summer months. Watch for announcements or contact us via the website for further information. Volunteer Needed! Our shotgun kitchen magician Carol Curry has announced her retirement from the position of Kitchen Coordinator. Carol has done a wonderful job for us for the past three years but is looking to reduce her involvement. The main responsibilities include developing a volunteer schedule for the month, menu planning, some meal preparation and shopping for supplies. The kitchen prepares lunches for sale on Sundays and for special events held throughout the year. If you are at all interested in helping us out, please drop me a note. Mike Graham Deserving Members Corner By Gail Eggiman Publicity Thumbs up this quarter goes to EVERY member who stepped forward to be elected for the Board, serves on a Committee, is a Chair or organizer of a facility or event for the club, or who volunteers when needed at the work parties, facilities or the events. The few of you ensure the rest of the membership is able to enjoy using the facilities and the property that we have at the Courtenay and District Fish & Game Protective Association. The majority of members are not aware of the number of hours, mileage, and missed family time that is given by you. Some of you do it because you like volunteering and feel you are making a contribution. Some do it because you enjoy the social aspect while volunteering. And some do it because you feel if you don t, that the Association will suffer for it if no one else steps forward. No matter what the reason, we are thankful for the volunteers and would ask that every member take a moment to think about how they can do their part to ensure the continuance of our great place and its purposes! Elections are coming up in December for the Board. Committees are looking for new blood to run the facilities and events. Think about helping out.
Cowboy Action Report Howdy Folks! The Valley Regulators held our 5th annual Pumpkin Massacre and B-Western Challenge up at Boomtown last weekend and it was a HOOT! Cowgirls and Cowboys from Campbell River to Victoria and Salt Spring Island came to the club to display their prowess with shootin irons and to partake in the many and varied diversions our sport has to offer. Once again, Coastal Black Winery came to the party and donated 30 round, firm, fully packed and unsuspecting pumpkins for the Pumpkin Massacre. These pumpkins served us well and will hold a special place in our memories at least until next year! As some of you know each cowgirl and cowboy uses two revolvers, a lever-action rifle and a double-barrelled shotgun to the shoot each stage and we usually shoot five or six stages per day. Depending on the category we enter, we shoot our revolvers in one of five different styles: Traditional - shooter holds the first revolver in both hands, shoots five rounds, holsters firearm and then shoots second revolver with both hands (continued on page 6)
Campsite Thank Yous! I would like to thank some folks that helped me out this summer with the kitchen and campsite. Michelle McLoughlin Luke McLoughlin Sarah Braithwaite Donna Kennedy Pat Kock Sand Tuffnail Barb Callandar Slyvia Lombard Laurie Shambrook and an extra special thank you to Elsie Rogers for all of her advise and the knowledge that she shared with me. I hope I have not forgotten anyone... I would also like to acknowledge the McLoughlin family as they painted all the new picnic tables when the weather was at its hottest. Much appreciated! And I would like to thank Chris from Hyland for donating all the curbs to the campsite. This would have cost us quite a bit if we had to purchase them. And of course a big Thank You to my husband (Dwayne) who swore when I took over the mobile kitchen he would not help me but he was always there and I could not have done it without his assistance of running to get supplies and propane. Sheri Serafini co-campsite Host And While We re Thanking Many thanks to Chris and Hyland Precast Inc. for generously donating the cement required for the Chlorination Building at Courtenay and District Fish & Game.
Nov 27 th Sun Don t Forget Archery Turkey Shoot! Everyone is invited to our Turkey Shoot and Pot Luck Lunch. $ a.m. Register for this fun shoot with your family. Come on out test yourself with a moving target and win a turkey! Co-ordinator: Larry Epp Cowboy Action Report (continued from page 4) Strong-hand Duelist - shooter holds first revolver in strong hand and shoots five rounds, holsters firearm and then shoots second revolver with strong hand Weak-hand Duelist - shooter holds first revolver in weak hand and shoots five rounds, holsters firearm and then shoots second revolver withweak hand Double Duelist - shooter draws first revolver and shoots five rounds with one hand and then draws second revolver and shoots five rounds with the other hand Gunfighter - shooter draws both revolvers at the same time and, with one firearm in each hand, may shoot them in any order. The B-Western Challenge has five different stages set up which are optimized for each of the five shooting styles. Shooters, who want to sign up for it, agree to shoot their revolvers in each style. This will give cowgirls and cowboys a chance to do something different without their friends laughing at them heh, if you believe that then you don t know cowboys! If you are interested in more information about Cowboy Action Shooting, check out our website: valleyregulators.com. Our fun matches are the third and fifth Saturday of each month. The shootin starts at 10:00 am and usually wraps up around 1:00-2:00 pm. Spectators are welcome and we ll supply eye and ear protection if you need it. Happy Trails, Slim Delgado
