Lebanon Rifle Team entry in the Pittsburgh and Suburban Rifle League lost to archrival Frazier-Simplex last month but still go into the bye week with a 3-1 record. 6 6 SITLER continued from Page 1 Dan is putting in a few 20 hour workdays since deer season began. The rut is running a little late. There is good hunting pressure, especially on Saturdays. He provided a lot of good information, beginning with the antler restrictions. Simply put, hunters in WMU 2A and 2B will follow the 3-up rule--3 points of the main beam on one side. This count excludes the brow tine. There is a clarifying illustration on page 53 of the Hunting and Trapping Digest. Regarding the split season for regular firearms deer hunting season, WMU2A is antlered only Nov.28 to Dec. 2, then antlered and antlerless Dec. 3 to Dec. 10. On the other hand, WMU2B is antlered and antlerless Nov. 28 to Dec. 10. WMU2B will also have an extended regular firearms extended season for antlerless only from De. 26 to Jan 28. Other items of interest included: The for-and-against feelings regarding Sunday hunting are running about One of the major stumbling blocks seems to be the Farm Bureau which is adamantly opposed to the proposal. To this point in the year the hunter education program has certified about 150 new hunters. However, that hasn t closed the gap of hunters abandoning the sport. The loss is across the demographic spectrum and the PGC is conducting surveys to identify the reasons for the drop off. Pheasant sticking is down this year. The pheasant farms produced 100,000 chicks, but the heavy summer flooding in the eastern part of the state wiped out 30% of the brood. The audience had some questions about the Mentored Youth Program (MYP). As the Guide notes, there is no better way to introduce a young person to hunting than with the close supervision of an adult mentor. The mentored youth: an unlicensed person under the age of 12 years old.; must get an MYP permit ($2); can hunt only squirrel, groundhog, coyote, antlered only deer, and spring turkey; must remain stationary at the hunting site. The mentor: licensed person over 21 years of age; acts as a guide to only one mentored youth at a given time; must transport a single weapon to and from the hunting spot; must be within arm s length of the youth at the hunting spot. In answer to a question from the crowd, Dan noted that there is no minimum age for a mentored youth, although there might be a question about a mentor with a baby in a car seat. When a youth is emotionally and physically able to hunt, it s time for him or her to begin the tradition. As usual, WCO Dan Sitler provided a diverse, relevant, and interesting program. ANTERLESS DEER LICENSE AVAIL- ABILITY FOR NEARBY WILDLIFE MANAGE- MENT UNITS AS OF November 9 (See the PGC website for updates) 2A B Except for 5C and 5D in the corner of the state around Philadelphia, all other Wildlife Management Unit doe licenses are sold out.

7 7 SHORT SHOTS from Page 2 there was probably a leak in the new water line. On October 22, Ken Zupkow used an excavator from A&S landscaping to do his usual artistic deep digging, while Ted Hildabrand, Bob Kirsopp, and El Vines tended to the finer details. They started the exploratory digging at 8:30AM, found the leak at a plastic coupling about 5 feet below grade, made the repair, and closed up after 1:00. Great work, guys. Now, I have a leaky faucet. Are you available on.. Earlier we noted the death of Denny Poluha. His wife, Mel, contacted us about letting the members know about the sale of Denny s tools and firearms from his estate. Not a problem. Following is a partial list of the items. The Second Annual Chili Off saw six top chefs put their culinary skills to the test. The cooks and their dishes were: Chuck Augenstein - Bear meat chili Bob Kirsopp - Hot venison chili John Beck - Taco chili Dale Moore - Venison chili Chris Chojnicki - Dutch oven chili Amanda & Chas Augenstein Elk meat chili John & Carol Tupta provided two kinds of corn bread and Jacque Hildabrand made the salad. To ensure unbiased judging as to the best chili, Ted Hildabrand selected three disinterested third-party judges--nick Kuzy, Carol Tupta, and our guest speaker, WCO Dan Sitler. The judges gave a score of one to ten to blind samples of each chili. They even used Sprite to cleanse their palates between samples--this was serious stuff! All the entries were absolutely delicious, putting to rest the argument about wild game not tasting good. But there could only be one winner of the Chili-Off. It was Chuck Augenstein, who gets to don the mantle of victory for the next year--a DMSC apron. Like we said...grin and bear it. Ted Hildabrand, left, brings chili samples to the panel of judges, Nick Kuzy, Carol Tupta, and Dan Sitler, for a blind taste test. A new format was adopted for this year s event. Thirty rounds were fired at standard NRA targets on the 200 yd. range. Shooters were allowed to use sighting shots and jackets. Then the match moved to the 100 yd. range where competitors shot at silhouette targets and could only use the hasty sling. Allan Jaworski garnished top honors with a x. The new format seemed to add a slightly different flair to an already fun event.

Seventeen shooters participated on a comfortable autumn day (see picture on next page). Top score went to Allan Jaworski with a x. Take note of the many scores in the 190+ range for the Slow Prone stage this certainly indicates growing marksmanship. Our brief hibernation will only last until January 2012 when we will start up yet another season. Get your long-johns ready as January CMP matches are not for the faint of heart. See you then!! --Reported by John Tupta

10 10 CMP MATCH October 16, 2011 PITTSBURGH SUBURBAN RIFLE LEAGUE UPDATE In its second match of the season, the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon rifle team, defending PSRL champs, traveled to Indiana to take on the Clymer Rifle Club. The team shot an excellent 1482 to Clymer s 1423 as a warm-up for upcoming match against arch rival Frazier- Simplex. Congrats to Amy Smith led the team with her second 300 in the PSRL. Fritz Hempelmann shot his highest score in two years, while Nicholle Benedict fired a great 294 and beating her dad again. The razzy award went to Dean Trew for shooting 29 straight 10 s and finishing with a 9! The team continued its hot shooting against Frazier...just not hot enough. Unfortunately, DMSC came up 2 points shy in its quest to beat Frazier-Simplex, As Team Captain Dean Trew was quick to point out, this was a much closer match than the first loss to Frazier last year ( ) so we are actually ahead of last year! There was a great turnout for the match, so all the shooters deserve recognition. The top five scores count in the competition. Dean B. Trew Amy Smith Nicholle Benedict Tom Gerner Matt Piatt Tom Benedict Jason Piatt Rick Janoski Miles Ford Dan Francis Fritz Hempelmann Dave Willard DMSC rebounded nicely against Allegheny with a victory. some really good shooting saw Tom Gerner fire a 300, with Dan Francis ( 294) and Miles Ford (293) shoot their best scores of the year. That puts the team at 3-1 heading into a bye week.

ACSL Meetings will be held bi-monthly as follows: January 12, March 8, May 10, July 12, September 13, November 8 WASHINGTON COUNTY (November information not available at press time.) 11 NOTES FROM THE FIELD GAME COMMISSION R The PGC announced that 53 of the 57 licensed elk hunters were successful during the 2011 elk seasons. Of that total, 19 were antlered elk and 34 were antlerless elk. The heaviest antlered elk was taken by William G. Zee, of Doylestown, Bucks County. He took a 930-pound, 9x8 on Nov.1, in Goshen Township, Clearfield County. It s unofficial Boone & Crockett green score was 426 and five-eighths inches. If this score holds up after the required 60-day drying time, it would be ranked second on Pennsylvania s Big Game Records for non-typical elk. Michael McGinnis, of Lyndhurst, Virginia, who was the successful bidder for the Elk Conservation Tag, harvested an antlered elk. McGinnis harvested a 7x9 on Oct. 19, in Jay Township, in Elk County. McGinnis purchased the Conservation Elk Tag during the Safari Club International s national conference in early 2011, and was able to hunt from Sept. 1-Nov. 5. Under the state law that created the Elk Conservation Tag, of the $29,000 that McGinnis bid for the tag, $23,200 will go to the Game Commission s Game Fund and $5,800 will be retained by Safari Club International.
