3 PRESIDENT S PAGE Hello everyone, The retrieving season has now begun with the Labrador Club holding their Come and Try days and RATG trials. Turnout was great, 14 entries in novice on Saturday 9 th and 15 entries on the Sunday as well as 5 competitors in the Open stake. In addition to the trialler s there were several people and dogs attending the training sessions only. Some very new to the retrieving concept and not quite proficient enough (yet) to enter the actual trial and there were also a couple with dogs not eligible to enter they still appreciated the training and stayed to watch the trials. A great time was had by all; visit the Facebook site We Love Retrieving Dogs and read some of the comments! Next up is our club s (RAFTCOSA) training day Saturday April 24 th and training + RATG trials on Sunday April 25 th. Venue is at Tim and Suzie Whittington s property at Kuitpo we plan for the Saturday to be mainly training exercises with perhaps a mock trial or a display in the afternoon (when everybody has had enough of training!) Depending on numbers of course. On Sunday we will have more training opportunities in the morning followed by RATG Novice and Open after Lunch. Monday 25 th is a public holiday so attendees may have the opportunity to recuperate. Jeff Patrick was contracted to judge both Novice and Open RATG stakes but due to complications after double knee surgery he has had to withdraw. Replacement judges are Graeme Allen for the Open and I will have the pleasure of judging Novice. I trust that all of you will join me in wishing Jeff Patrick a speedy recovery (although the way Susan Burns successfully handled Jeff s dog Hood on the weekend he may be happy to sit back and relax a bit longer!). Our new look Web site is up and running, visit and enjoy all the features. A big thank you to Sandy Smith who designed and created the site and organised it all she is also asking for feedback from everyone on things that you would like to see on the website, please respond! The committee has decided to phase out the quarterly Newsletters in its current form and instead have Latest News (or similar name) tab on the website for items to be posted as they come to hand rather than having a deadline for publishing. We envisage that trial results and reports will be posted here as they come to hand, as well as articles of interest, blasts from the past, any newsworthy items and a quarterly Presidents Page. We are also researching Facebook and Twitter handles as an open social media forum with interaction from all trialler s as it happens. More on this at a later stage. Happy trialling to all of you! Best Regards, Tor. Page 3

9 Page 9 Jean Bird interviews RAFTCOSA Life Member, Susan Grant. Biography Sue Grant What was your first dog? My first dog was a 17 th birthday gift from my Aunt and Uncle. My mother was furious, no animals welcome and I was distraught because I thought this puppy was a Golden Cocker Spaniel (all those gold curls) and I desperately wanted a Labrador. I soon realised how fortunate I was. Brutus and I had lots of fun. Dogs are permitted on public transport in Britain so we travelled by train, underground train and bus and had lots of amusing stories to tell. Sadly we couldn t raise the money to bring him with us when we migrated to Australia. Has the Golden Retriever always been your chosen breed? No, clearly I would have preferred a Labrador, until I was given a Golden. I would never change that now. When did you start retrieving? And what gave you the incentive? I waited almost 20 years for a dog here in Oz. My first Ozzie Golden was a lovely natured boy and we competed in the first ever agility trial here in Adelaide. The late Jack Nairn thought my second golden, Smudge, bought as a companion to Ben, showed some retrieving ability and so the journey began in Tell me about Polly who was awarded a CM in retrieving. I know you trained Polly long and hard to get your wonderful results and she was an ideal dog for you. In 1990 having been rained off a field trial, Mick Munday gave me a copy of the Gundog magazine which included an article from Annie Roska in New Zealand breeding Goldens from the famous UK Holway line. From her I purchased Polly as a 12 week old puppy. My first impression was of a bright eyed pup with ears on top of her head looking like a teddy bear, bit odd I thought. She was a dream to train, full of fizz, very very bright and keen to retrieve all day long. Her first trial at Point Sturt at 7 months old earnt the comment from Judges Cecil Adkins and Sid Welbourn She s serious about this one and indeed I was. I took Polly to work with metwice a week leading up to the State Championship to run patterns on Richmond Oval in my lunch break and we went training every weekend. The best training sessions I enjoyed was with the late Ron Bathie, running Gemma, and JadineMacKenzie, running Jason. We had so much fun and so much success. Polly won the 1993 SA State Championship just before her 3 rd birthday and I remember each and every one of those runs. The next day we were in All Age and Polly gave a wonderful performance but the Judge, Barry Kavanagh, wouldn t give her a CM because she had run about 20 metres off course on one leg of a triple water retrieve. Polly was awarded a CM by Bob Maver some years later at Narrung. We trialled as far East as Batemans Bay and as far West as Perth and was awarded several 2 nd places usually by ½ point behind a chap running a Labrador! Lots of funny stories, Polly had a mind of her own and we did have several arguments about which bird she was picking up. We created a Rule Change when she collected a freshly killed rabbit that a Wedge Tail Eagle had dropped on the top of a cliff in the 1996 National held here at Nildotti which I had not seen happen. She then retrieved the second bird but was put out of the trial by the Judge, Ian Besanko, but I made a formal protest and was allowed to continue. At the next ANKC rule change there was an inclusion in the rules to accommodate the possibility of this happening again. Polly won in excess of 25 All Age trials in her career. When did you become a retrieving judge? I wish you still were, I loved your runs. Did you judge interstate? I really can t remember when I became a judge, sorry. I did judge a few times in Victoria and NSW but can t say I enjoyed it. I enjoyed Novice trials but they are very limited in what you can do. Restricted I enjoyed and found lots of fun. I found All Age too intense and not at all enjoyable. Tell us about your accidents you had a couple of times whilst setting up your runs. I believe you had to get help via the ambulance service from one area. Broken ankles left and right. When Trialling in ACT I severely injured my right ankle and couldn t drive home for a couple of weeks. Some years later I was

10 setting a trial at Milang and stepped on a tussock that had been undermined by European Carp which resulted in a compound fracture of my left ankle. Was transported by the local CFS on a fracture board to a waiting ambulance and very cross because I wanted a helicopter evacuation! To this day I can t wriggle the toes on my left foot. With your broken ankle did the ambulance men want to cut your boots off to treat you, but you refused? Indeed that is correct, no way were they going to hack my expensive boot off! I was transported to Stirling hospital to be stabilised then on to Flinders where I stayed for 2 more weeks. When were you given Life Membership of RAFTCOSA? secretary and newsletter editor for years and years. I can t really remember the date. I was What made you give up retrieving? What finally pushed me out of retrieving was the totally outside of the rule book run put on by a Victorian judge that had Georgia and me in a full blown argument. Georgia was a very difficult dog to compete with, had her own ideas of what to do. I never ran her in All Age after that day but ran non-competing in Restricted for the rest of that season and most of the next. Some people didn t like that so we stopped entirely. Do you still have dogs and what are you involved with now? I have one very precious Golden, Rio, imported at great expense from Britain. She is the nicest dog I have ever had my hands on but has very limited retrieving drive and couldn t be bred from as a specialist orthodontist advised she has the worst bite he has ever seen. She has her RRD title as well as her T3 tracking title and is now 12 ½ years old. I am involved with the Rare Fruits Society and my garden is very productive. The Rare bit refers to fruits of all types no longer grown commercially 300+ varieties of apple, 150+ varieties of pear etc. as well as a huge range of sub-tropicals that will grow happily here in South Oz. I also attended a certificate course in visual arts-textiles and spend many happy hours producing pieces for various exhibitions. You became a breeder. What was your prefix and what litters did you have? My breeder prefix was Granble, a combination of Grant and Gribble (my daughter s married name). Polly produced 2 litters. 2 boys and a girl and 5 boys and 3 girls respectively. I kept a bitch (Kit) from the second litter and took her to Perth to a dog closely related to Polly and that litter produced 5 boys and 2 girls, one of which was my Georgia. I subsequently sent Kit to New Zealand to the breeder who produced Polly to further her breeding kennel. Polly and Brutus Page 10
