3 President s Report It s been a sorry season so far. The quail just haven t been there in the numbers that we had hoped. This of course makes the early Trials very hard and many miles have been covered by the Trial Managers to try and find suitable paddocks. Unfortunately, despite everyone s best efforts, the Utility Dog Trial didn t produce a result due to lack of game. I have been fortunate to have attended two Pointer & Setter Trials this season, one of them our club s Trial yesterday, where the dogs had to work very hard indeed for the game that they found. The Trial did conclude with a worthy winner, but my goodness it was hard work for all concerned. Again it s the dedication of a few stalwarts that keep these trials alive. I hope that the next generation can be encouraged to give up their Game Boys and computer games and take to the field so that these traditions can have a greater longevity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Sponsors. Your sponsorship has provided some worthwhile trophies for our Field trials. Please support those that are good enough to support us, it works both ways. If anyone wishes to come out and see a Field Trial then please contact our Secretary for more information. You will be made most welcome. It is still early in the season and apart from the soaking we received recently the ground is very dry. Unseasonal warm weather has kept the grass growing and with such a lush pick the rabbits are starting to mate. Currently there seems to be plenty of rabbits around but whether they will still be there when we need them is a different matter. I hear that the Abbott government has cut the funding for land care. This can only result in more frustration for the farmers as the rabbit population again multiplies. Good sport for us but hard for those whose livelihood it impacts. It s a never-ending battle and one where the farming community is fighting a constant rear guard action. On my permission they have been ripping burrows in an attempt to follow up on the baiting campaign last year. However within a few days the rabbits are burrowing again in the freshly dug earth. A case of pushing string uphill I m afraid. The club has its Open Show in the next few weeks. For those of you who enjoy seeing the gundog breeds in all their finery then this is a compelling day. Like the Trials, the dedication of a few make all this happen. Thank you once again to all of you who give up your time to make these events the success that they are. Steve Sapsead 3
4 From the Editor The Committee made a decision earlier this year to move to an -only newsletter. This means that we will continue to post the newsletter out to those already on the mailing list, but will not add any new members to that list. This makes sense in the light of the increased costs of postage from 60 to 70 cents for a letter, and from $1.20 to $1.40 for a bigger envelope. So please, if you have an address but are receiving your newsletter by post, swap to . You will get all photos in full colour, and will be able to print out only those items you need. A membership form will be included in the next newsletter, together with information about the AGM. Now a call for photos for the newsletter. John Hodson sent me a bunch of great photos of his ESS Milly, which I have been using, but it would be good to see other breeds too. What about it, guys? Please send yours in so you can see them in print! If you don t want more ESSs, please vary the pics for me! Thanks to Nicola for the photo of Spelsbury Bishop on the cover. Sadly, he has now passed away. Penny CLUB WEBSITE Don t forget that for all up to date information about the Club, look on our website Dogs Welcome A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in a Midwest town he planned to visit on his vacation. He wrote: I would very much like to bring my do with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?" An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote: SIR: "I've been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I've never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or steal pictures off the walls or use them as a coloring book. I've never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I've never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you're welcome to stay here, too." Watch the Funny Guilty Dogs Compilation 2014 on YouTube! 4
5 Don't let your pooch become overweight this year. Take a look at these tips to balance the perfect diet. Enforcing healthy eating on your dogs isn't easy it can be incredibly tough to say no when they're begging for food at your feet. But dog behaviour specialist Cesar Millan warns against overfeeding dogs. Overweight pets can suffer from the same health ailments as humans, so it's important to keep them healthy and fit. Mr Millan says there's no hard and fast guidelines on how much to feed dogs, as caloric needs vary with their size and activity level. He recommends looking at the dog's current size and activity level before adjusting his or her diet if your pet is currently trim and has high levels of energy, you're probably feeding it the right amount. Larger dogs who are sluggish may require less food and more exercise. Morning and evening meals are recommended for adult dogs, as this makes it easier to monitor their intake and health. Unwell dogs tend to change their eating routines, so you'll pick up on a possible illness if you notice your pooch hasn't eaten his breakfast by the usual time. While many dogs seem to want to eat everything and anything, there are many things that should be avoided in order to keep them healthy. The Australian RSPCA recommends avoiding chocolate, onions, avocado, grapes, nuts, fatty trimmings and currants, however there are many other food items to keep out of reach of your pup. Dogs are generally lactose intolerant, so as much as Fido wants a lick of your ice cream, this could be a very bad idea for both him and you! As for the eternal debate on dry food vs wet food, the choice is really yours. Canned foods often have better quality protein and fewer preservatives, however dry foods can help dogs chew and are often cheaper and easier to store. 5
6 TRIALLING NEWS! Noel Eltringham with his Labrador VGC members were well represented amongst the winners and placegetters for the recent 3-day trial held over the Easter weekend (hosted by the Labrador Club of Victoria). The trial was held at the Heart Morass in Gippsland, a beautiful wetlands property owned and rehabilitated by Field and Game Australia. The club put on a catered dinner on Saturday night and, with nominal funds collected for camping from competitors, were able to make a significant contribution to the FGA trust responsible for the property s environmental management and restoration. Damien Waldron had a great weekend with his GSP, Yorifeld Call of the Cup he had a win in Restricted on Saturday (162.5 pts) for his NRD title and a 2 nd place on Sunday (146 pts). Congratulations! Keeping the GSP trend going, Peter Attard and Freezepoint Jed Line Eley (GSP) placed 2 nd in Novice on Saturday (163 pts) and came through for a very nice win on Sunday (181 pts). It was also wonderful to see Helen Eley win Novice with her FCR, Kellick Take me to the Top, on Saturday with a score of 179 pts. Prue Winkfield s GSP, Yorifeld Cup Hero, was handled by Chris Van Eckelen to a win on Friday (185 pts) for his NRD title. Congratulations! Not to be outdone, Jaqui Carter was only 7 points behind in 3 rd place with litter-sister Yorifeld Cup Fancy and followed that up with a very creditable 3 rd place in Restricted on Sunday (157.5 pts). Russell Whitechurch had a busy few days handling four dogs over 2 stakes Adderslot Lay Down Misere (LAB) placed 3 rd in Restricted on Friday (163 pts) and won on Sunday (151 pts); Rt Ch Adderslot Chief (LAB) placed 3 rd in All Age on both Friday (152 pts) and Saturday (139 pts), whilst Topnotch Queela (GSP) (owned by R & D McCann) placed 2 nd on Saturday in Restricted (162 pts) and 3 rd on Sunday (145 pts). Congratulations to Karl Britton and Rt Ch Acolon Prince of Cypher (LAB) who claimed 1 st place in All Age on both Friday (165 pts) and Saturday (146 pts). Greg Playdon and his Lab, Ntl Rt Ch Adderslot Carbo, took out All Age on Sunday (155 pts) and was also presented with the Autumn Cup. Well done to Noel Eltringham and his Lab, Rt Ch Reveirter Swan Hill, who placed 2 nd in All Age on Saturday (144 pts) and to Russell Thomas and Ft Ch Inkaline Nevada AARD (GSP) who placed 2 nd in All Age on Sunday (142 pts) - fantastic results! Wonderful to see so many VGC members doing well forgive me if I ve missed anyone! Sally Haynes 6
