Our President may have a new name - taken from the label on the box of lanyards delivered to him June for our 100yr Retrieving Celebration weekend. PRESIDNETVITOHAN GUANGDONG CHL Needless to say, the parcel came from China!!! PRESIDENTS REPORT Constitution For those of you who are either paid-up VGC members or Life members you will receive a copy of the new Constitution for our club. There has been a great deal of work behind this and I ask that you take the time to read it thoroughly. Acceptance of the New Constitution will be voted on at the Victorian Gundog Club Incc AGM in November, so you have until then to read and digest its contents. Please note that only fully paid-up members and Life members are entitled to vote on club issues. Do remember that this is your club, we as members of the Committee only try and steer it in the right direction. So please accept this invitation to come along to the AGM, date and venue can be obtained from our Secretary. Club subscriptions fall due in August, as this is the last newsletter before then I ask that you renew your membership promptly, which in turn will allow you full voting rights. Thank you. The Over 100 years of Field Trials Celebrations The Over 100 years of Field Trials celebrations were held on the first weekend of July and it was a great success. A dog match between the Pointer & Setter & Utility dogs fraternity was run at Sentosa Game Preserve, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Alongside the dog match was a Retrieving Trial run on a separate property nearby. As always this was well patronized and a very successful day was enjoyed by those who attended. After the dog match and trial we all attended a dinner held at the Seaspray Life Saving Club where the winners of the day were presented with sashes and trophies. This was a most enjoyable evening celebrating a momentous occasion. Our Master of Ceremonies was the inimitable Graham Eames. Graeme has been a great supporter of the Victorian Gundog Club through his editorship of Feathers and Fur magazine and we thank him once again for a great performance as MC for the evening. The guest speaker for the evening was Steve Austin from Sydney. Some of you may know Steve from the TV programme Harry s Practice. We know Steve as an exceptional dog trainer who is renowned for his work with Sniffer dogs. Steve presented a power point presentation of his work which entertained us all, from Customs dogs and their antics to dogs trained for the eradication of rabbits programme on Macquarie Island. Thank you to all those who helped make the weekend a success, the list is too long to mention individually but you know who you are. Without doubt the Victorian Gundog Club has proven that it is the Premier Gundog Club in Australia. Spaniel & Retriever Trials The Spaniel & Retriever Trials are coming up in August. If anyone would like to come along and see these magnificent dogs doing what they do best please give me a call, we would love to see you there. Stephen Sapsead

Editor s Scribble There is a lot to read in this issue! All reports from the Centenary Weekend were glowing I didn t get the chance to go as I had pups just a few weeks old bad timing for sure as the weekend was obviously a great time with Gundog lovers. Some photos of the weekend are in this mag but there are many more so we plan a photographic book to be completed in the near future and sent to all members. Our Open Show was July 17 th and it ran very well. Our own Club member Maria Cave judged part of the breeds and General Specials. Both Maria and Cameron were very grateful to the Club for their appointment. There are also some recipes from Tegwen and David Flack I haven t had rabbit for year so I will certainly be trying out these recipes! Does anyone else have a favorite recipe to share with members? Please forward to me for the next magazine. With Master Chef 2010 over.. I am wondering what to do with myself each night now. I didn t watch last year s show but got totally wrapped up in this year s. I will practice my rabbit stews in case I get into the 2011 show! Please keep an eye on our website for updates also. L ee DO YOU OWN A RETRIEVER OR SPANIEL?? If the answer is yes why don t you come along to one of the Club s Spaniel & Retriever Field Trials and see the type of work these flushing breeds were bred to do? The schedules for the Spaniel & Retriever Field Trials were in the June/July newsletter and can be downloaded from our website at If you would like to come for a look, just contact either the Trial Manager, Steve Sapsead, or the Trial Secretary, Rachel Greaves NOTE: field trials are all weather events and start early in the morning. Handlers and spectators have to be prepared to start early and walk all day. 7 This is a photo I was sent of a puppy I recently sold to a 20 year old boy. He has become a paraplegic in the last 12 months and wanted a Toller to train as his own assistance dog. He has done a lot of research and came to visit me. I was convinced that the home would be excellent and that Rob would also benefit greatly from a Toller puppy. Rob's step mother has phoned me and said she can't believe what a positive effect the puppy has had on Rob already. Lenny is fitting in to the family and bonding to Rob. Rob was worried about what to do when Lenny got tired but it appears Lenny has sorted it out for now. How long he will fit in the basket under the chair is another matter? Cheers, Glenda Forster

VICTORIAN GUNDOG CLUB CENTENARY CELEBRATION FIELD DOG MATCH & RETRIEVING TRIAL The weekend started out on Friday with a beautiful clear day, just right for a walk along the 90 mile beach at Seaspray which was the camping area for the competitors who were venturing down to help celebrate over 100 years of competitive Field Trial in Victoria. People were camped out at the caravan park and various other houses and holiday accommodation spots available in the area. Friday night brought some rain showers but we woke on Saturday to nice cool day, with light clouds and promise of rain. The Field Dog Match was to be held at Sentosa Game Resort, but due to lack of rain and no good water source at Sentosa the Retrieving Trial was moved to a property just near Sale. RETRIEVING TRIAL The Retrieving Trial had an entry of 20 dogs in All Age and 6 Dogs in Restricted. After scratching the All Age started with 18 dogs and the Restricted with 4. All Age judges Jim Hargreaves and Trevor Stevens set 4 testing runs and allowed the competitors to test their dogs with great swimming water and good mark retrieves. At the end of the day there were 7 dogs in the finishers and the winners were: ALL AGE 1st: R. Whitechurch: NTL 04&07 RT. CH. ADDERSLOT CRACKERS TRIGA CM 195 pts 2nd. P. Doley: WINTERSET ANZAC RRD 189 pts 3RD. S. Hall BEEREEGAN RIVER STONE RRD 186 pts 4th R. Whitechurch: RT CH. TOCKATUNGA SLICK WILLIE 184 pts. The Restricted competitors had a very relaxed day with only 4 competitors and Judge Margaret Hall was able to give them all enough time watch the All Age dogs in action and talk to some of the people who came to watch the event. Restricted results were: Restricted: Ist Place: Kadnook Kennels KADNOOK SPIRIT OF LANARK 160 Pts. 2nd Place: T. Stow REVEIRTER LOCH ARD 128 Pts 3rd Place: J. Montasell KADNOOK RUSTY LASS NRD 116 Pts Commemorative Trophies were presented for all placegetters and a special sash was also presented. Thanks to Jack Montasell for donating the sashes. It was great to see Bob Maver attending the trial and I am sure he was able to reminisce with some of the older triallers who have been around a while. Both Bob and Jack Montasell are two of the stalwarts of retrieving trials and Bob was instrumental in setting up trial in Victoria. I know I enjoyed catching up with Bob and talking about old times. Siobhan Tawton outdid herself with the catering at the Retrieving Trial and served up nice warm soup and a special BBQ d Pheasant with sauce as a special treat at lunch time and all who attended enjoyed the camaraderie at lunchtime around the catering tent. When the trial was over we all went back to Seaspray and our accommodation and got spruced up for our celebratory dinner at the Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club.

CELEBRATORY DINNER The dinner was a great success with a delightful three course meal and presided over by Dr Duck Graham Eames as MC. We had the presentation of trophies and then a talk by Steve Austin on the great work Gundogs are doing as trained sniffer dogs in a variety of fields including wildlife preservation, drug and law enforcement and it was great to hear how easily gundogs can be trained to do all these types of jobs. The talk was followed by Steve Sapsead launching our new booklet " A Short History of Gundog Field Trial in Victoria" which was presented to all who attended. Copies are available from the Club Secretary Rachel Greaves for $10.00 each. The booklet outlines a brief history of the beginnings of Field trial in Victoria and also the history of the VGC. The Club also presented their commemorative Lanyard which was given to all who participated in the weekend events. Bob Maver also gave a brief talk with some reminiscences about things that happened at early Retrieving Trials. Other Life members present were Jack Montasell, Margaret Hall, Rachel Greaves. Apologies were received from some members who couldn t attend on the night including life member, Elaine Tatchell, Mary Conheady, Peter Frost, Elizabeth White, Jill & Wayne Poholke, Prue Winkfield, Bruce & Pauline Dunne. During the night there were a couple of toasts that I think were very apt for the night and they were one for past competitors and supporters of the trials and the other was for our dogs, past, present and future that make the sport the joy it is for all of us. Sunday was a more relaxed day with some people just sleeping in (after a hard night) and a group of shooters taking off to do some Pheasant Shooting at Sentosa for the day and others doing some surf fishing on the beach. Thanks must go to all those who helped make the weekend a success especially Rachel Greaves, Gordon Strachan, Margaret Hall, Penny Sohier for her work on the booklet, Russel Thomas for obtaining the sites used, Siobhan Tawton for catering at the Retrieving Trial, the judges for their time and effort, trial managers and everybody who stewarded for either event on Saturday. We have a great sport and through the sport we have a large number of great friends. Margaret Hall Photo shows Handlers at the Retrieving Trial

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS DOG MATCH FOR POINTERS & SETTERS AND UTILITY GUNDOGS SATURDAY 3 rd JULY 2010 HELD AT SENTOSA GAME RESERVE. To commemorate a centenary of field trials run in Victoria a dog match was run between Pointers & Setters and Utility Gundogs. It was run at Sentosa Game Reserve South Gippsland on Saturday 3 rd July The entries for the day were four Pointers, three Irish Setters and five German Shorthaired Pointers. The judges were Mr Denis Everard, Mr David Blacker and the steward Mr Steve Sapsead. The game birds for the day were Partridge. Whilst the trial paddock was seeded with birds the administration was carried out, vetting dogs and conducting the draw. The trial commenced with the first pair With Neal McLeod s German Short Haired Pointer handled by Mal Park & Gordon Strachan s Irish Setter who eliminated himself instantaneously having worked out that there were birds at the trailer so he did not have to work to find them. After a short delay the competition began in earnest but the birds were hard to find and after all dogs had been given a generous run by the judges which took all morning, at this point our steward had to retire sick and was replaced by Gordon Strachan after lunch the second round was conducted with six dogs left comprising one Pointer, one Irish Setter and four German Shorthaired Pointers. The GSP s worked better than the Pointers & Setters on the day. During this run the pointer and the setter and two German Shorthaired Pointers were eliminated for breaking attempting to steal game. This left two dogs both GSP s to decide the winner and runner up Diane McCann s dog had been the stand out dog all day and was outright winner so much so that in final run to decide runner up the judges had another dog was run against Mals dog for fear that Dianes dog might eliminate it self in the final run which would have been a pity. After many runs Mal s dog finally was able to find, flush and retrieve a bird and was awarded runner up. I wish to thank our judges for a great job they did also a special thanks must go to Russell Thomas who organized the birds and Sentosa so we could have a great day. I would also thank our competitors for without them the dog match would not have been a great success. At the centenary dinner the following awards presented. Winner & Best UD dog: Diane McCann s German Shorthaired Pointer Topnotch Leilani. RRD. (below left) Runner Up: Neal McLeod s German Shorthaired Pointer Canawinsra Silver Shadow. NFD. (below centre) Best Pointer : Joe Camilleri s Pointer Walteela More Gold. (below right) Best Setter Taner Ozsehitoglu s Irish Setter Russetray Royal Flush. Presidents award: Henry Foster s Pointer Koram Kris At Inistonna (Imp IRE)

Steve Hall (ctr) and judges Gareth Tawnton, Trevor Stevens & Bob Maver Henry Foster is presented with the President s Choice Trophy from Steve Sapsead. Trevor Stow, Margaret Hall & Jack Montasell 17 th July our Club s President, Steve Sapsead, along with Rachel Greaves, Mary Conheady, Ron Murphy, Pamela Gelme and Lee Petering (behind camera) present a copy of A Short History of Gundog Field Trials In Victoria to the Laurie Luxmoore Library. The library is the largest canine resource centre in Australia and houses over 9000 items. If you are a member of Dogs Victoria you may borrow many of the books, DVDs and videos the library has.
