Several of my friends and I have commented on how the time between seasons seem to shorten exponentially and I m not quite sure as to why that is.

1 THE CATAWBA SPORTSMAN A Publication of the Catawba Valley Wildlife Club October 2017 THE PRESIDENT S CORNER I recently found a few moments to quietly sit and think about the rapidly approaching 2017 hunting season. Several of my friends and I have commented on how the time between seasons seem to shorten exponentially and I m not quite sure as to why that is. I feel like it was just yesterday when we were trying to decide on how to rid ourselves of a basketball size nest of yellow jackets in one of our 10 high box stands. I for one was not in the notion of trying to evict those guys in close quarters in daylight. Fall is my favorite season and has been since my early years. I was hooked on hunting my first time out. I can remember my worse day of school each year opening day of squirrel season. My Dad always tried to get his off time scheduled around opening day of squirrel season. And Ladies and Gentlemen he was, in my mind, the Arnold Schwarzenegger 's Terminator to a squirrel. Think about this Do you remember the old cartoon The Super Hero s and the dude called Aqua-man? He would call fish to his location with some telepathic mojo That s what Dad was like in the woods to a squirrel. They seemed to run right in his lap. I believe he used a hickory nut scent aftershave! One particular year I can remember his words clearly Now have your work done and I ll pick you up as soon as school lets out and we ll go hunting! And likewise I can remember me thinking WHY! "You and Ken Frye will have killed them all by 3 o clock! Ken was a good friend of my Dad s and an Uncle to the CVWC s very own Jeff Huffman. In my mind s eye I can still see that old 1965 gray Chevrolet truck sitting in the school parking lot with a 12GA and 22LR hanging in the rear window gun rack (it was a different world then and unarguably a better one.) I still remember (in my mind) the main detail of our conversation as we headed home for me to change clothes. And it was this: We didn t hunt your grandpaw s place cause I wanted to leave it for the two of us! We are supportive of sportsmen and women of all races, creeds and nationalities. THANKS TO NHFD VOLUNTEERS Hello everyone, I want to take a moment to thank everybody that came out for NHFD. Everything worked like a well oiled machine thanks to all the hands we had come out and work booths. I want to thank the Catawba Science Center, Catawba County Sheriff s Dept., Hickory Police Special Operations Team, Wildlife Officers, Outdoor Supply and all our volunteers for all your time and efforts getting the club ready for this event. We had an absolutely beautiful day for the event and those young folks that were here had a blast. We have a great club, full of folks that truly care about the next generation of shooters of all disciplines. sniper rifle. Ken (188-3X) teamed up with CMP North GM Steve Cooper (187-5X) for a 375-8X, eeking out a 43rd finish of 198 teams.

5 A N N O U N C E M E N T S NATIONAL RIFLE MATCHES CAMP PERRY, OHIO...Continued from last month - National Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Match- a two-man team shooting a rapid timed, prone firing sequence at both 300 and 600 yards, with a Korean era or prior military sniper rifle. Ken (188-3X) teamed up with CMP North GM Steve Cooper (187-5X) for a 375-8X, eeking out a 43rd finish of 198 teams. - Team Spencer s Boys (Alex & Blake) fired a 375-4X with Alex firing and impressive 193-3X and Blake a 182-1X, good for a team finish of 46th. As you can see, X count in the Lake Erie wind is critical in these matches as three teams finished between us, even though we all had the same score. - National Roosevelt Rifle Match- a new match, limited to the M1903 (not A3) Springfield or the Krag- Jorgensen Rifle. Out of 98 competitors, Ken finished 43rd with a 246-8x (included a 100-7X Slow Prone clean), Blake finished 63rd with a 233-0X and Alex finished 82nd with a 215-2X. Scores reflect some difficult light conditions. All of the above matches, except for the Rattle Battle, are conducted at our club throughout the year during the CMP Matches. Every CVWC member is eligible to shoot in any of these matches, including any matches at the National Level. Although the club had no representation in the National Pistol and Smallbore Matches, the same applies. Kudos to Alex Swain, new CVWC member and new CMP shooter for attending and competing in these National Matches for his first time. Doing so can be quite a first time experience, especially for someone as new as he is to this game. Alex won a Bronze Medal for his shooting, Blake won (2) Silver and (1) Bronze Medals while Ken won (2) Gold, (1) Silver and (1) Bronze Medals. We all had a great time, got to enjoy each other s company and had fun shooting a match together representing our club. We re looking forward to next year and hope to have more of you come along. If you are looking for something to do for workdays and cannot attend regular workdays check the board. Please erase any task you complete. BEAR HUNT OPPORTUNITY Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a possible opportunity for a bear hunt by bow for someone. I have some friends who live at Linville Ridge and they are besieged by bears and would like to get rid of some of them. Anyone interested can contact me at rhmeekjr@aol.com. Thanks Bob Meek SPORTING CLAYS REPORT In September, your Committee sponsored 3 events. On September 2, 34 rounds were shot, with Chris Robbins having the high score of 48 and Tim Miller coming in second with a score of 47. On September 16, 59 rounds were shot, with Tommy Duncan having the high score of 49 and Tim Brooks second with a 48. For September 23, on National Hunting and Fishing Day, 33 rounds were shot. For this event, the scoring was done on the Lewis Class format. In the Expert class, Robert McQueen won with a score of 46. John Henkle and Bob Fleming tied for second with scores of 43. In Marksman class, Fred Johnston won with a score of 41. Aaron Barger tied Fred with a 41, but Fred won with by tie breaker. Randy Abernethy came in third with a 40. In Hunter class, Ann Holland won with a score of 35. Patrick Shuman also shot a 35, but Ann won by tie breaker. John Meeks came in third with a 34. I want to formally thank all the trappers who work so hard to make our Sporting Clays operation such a huge success, especially those who help in setting up and maintaining the course. You all know who you are. We invite all club members to join us on first and third Saturdays of each month for a good time, and bring a friend to join in. You do not need to be good at Sporting Clays to have a lot of fun and enjoy some aroma therapy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Randy Abernethy
