1 Ocober 2016 NEWSLETTER LANE COUNTY BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION 130 HANSEN LANE, EUGENE, OR Websie: lcbaor.org Presiden: Pam Leavi Vice-Presiden: Max Kuhn Treasurer: Polly Hablison Secreary: Jodi Wikorowski Pas Presiden: Kaharine Hun Board Members: Kelly Goodwin Francis Rohauge Larry Scoville Ross Mills Wayne Lemler Presiden s Message Pam Leavi, LCBA Presiden Dr. Ramesh Sagili was our speaker a he Sepember meeing. He spen he majoriy of his message elling our beekeepers he imporance of having healhy bees going ino he fall. Augus begins he sar of he cycle for he nex year s season by producing healhy worker bees ha will raise he final cycle of bees before winer. I is essenial ha he colonies have adequae pollen and honey nuriion enering he hive in he mid-augus o mid- Sepember period. The colonies ha don produce a healhy, well fed brood cycle of lae summer bees will no have he nurse bees needed o produce he winer bees, which are called Fa Bees. These bees need o live a number of monhs and raise he firs cycle of brood in he colonies in winer. They are differen from summer bees because hey carry nuriens in heir cells ha help raise he winer brood. He sressed he use of pollen supplemens. A he end of he flowering season, here is fewer plans producing pollen, and likely here also isn much necar available eiher. Feeding your bees fondan during he fall and winer o ensure adequae carbohydrae sores is imporan, as well as he supplemenal pollen. In addiion, Dr. Sagili discussed he hrea Varroa mies are o our bees and urged monioring and reaing when necessary. I jus reurned from a rip o Souhern California and on he drive hrough he cenral par of he sae, I saw a number of honey bee hives in he orchards and fields, and all of hem had op feeders giving he bees supplemenal sugar syrup! The weaher in ha area allows hem o offer syrup because he emps are in he 80 s. This monh, Harry Vanderpool, Presiden of he Oregon Sae Beekeepers Associaion will share Favorie Beekeeping Tips and Tricks You Don Find in he Books. Please consider donaing some honey o he club in November. These donaions allow us o sell honey a he Good Earh Home Show in January o cover he cos of he booh and provides for he many ways our club can provide knowledge. Congraulaions winners. Pam announced he hree winners of he LCBA scholarships for he 2017 Oregon Maser Beekeepers Appreniceship program. Congraulaions Becky Lemler, Primo Knigh and Sachiko Ioh. Paul Johnson was congraulaed for his recen compleion of he Oregon Maser Beekeepers Journey program. He received a recogniion award from LCBA. Pam Leavi requesed honey donaions from members for he Good Earh Home Show honey sale. This suppors he LCBA and all evens for he year. LCBA donaed $1,000 o he OSU Bee Lab in suppor of Ramesh Sagili for coninued research a he bee lab. Pam Leavi wih scholarship winners Becky Lemler & Primo Knigh (no shown Sachiko Ioh). Polly Hablison presening Ramesh Sagili donaion o he OSU Bee Lab. Speaker: Ramesh Sagili, Assisan Professor of Apiculure a Oregon Sae Universiy, spoke abou ongoing research a he universiy. His presenaion, Insighs on Honeybee Nuriion and Varroa Managemen, was very informaive. He began his presenaion emphasizing he saying, you are wha you ea. Research has shown ha nuriion is he firs line of defense for bees. Good nuriion will give bees a sronger immune response and decrease heir suscepibiliy o pess and pahogens. Good nuriion also increases he number of deoxifying enzymes in our bees sysems. Ramesh said ha research has shown colonies of bees fed higher concenraions of pollen in heir dies have beer survival when faced wih Nosema infecion. Pollen is he only source of proein for bees. Necar is he carbohydrae source. The diversiy of available pollen has been shown o be very imporan for he healh and survival of bee colonies. Saisics have proven ha colony loss by sae in he US is direcly linked o he exen of open land versus he exen of developed land. Pollen for proein is especially imporan for he survival of winer bees. The proein is necessary for he producion of viellogenin, which give he winer bees he longeviy for survival. Ramesh also discussed sudies being conduced ha look a he hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees beween seven and foureen days old. These glands are very large in nurse bees when here is adequae proein available. These glands are responsible for producing he food ha he nurse bees hen feed o he developing larvae. The nurse bees from colonies locaed in carro fields, a very poor pollen source, were found o have a 21% drop in he size of he hypopharyngeal glands, while colonies ha were supplemened wih pollen only had a 12% drop in he size of he hypopharyngeal glands. Ramesh srongly suggesed ha beekeepers should consider supplemening our colonies wih pollen especially in he early spring and lae fall. Sugar syrup or fondan is also imporan during hese imes. Ramesh quickly discussed varroa mies. He gave a brief hisory of he mies. Varroa were originally an obligae ecoparasie of Asian bees, bu someime around 1985 he mie jumped hoss and is now a huge menace o our European honeybees. The European honeybees and he varroa mies do no have a sable hos-parasie relaionship because here has no been enough evoluionary ime. In Asian honeybees, varroa does no reproduce on worker brood. Over ime, he Asian bees and he varroa mies have developed a balanced relaionship of resisance and olerance and neiher species kills he oher. This relaionship has no found a balance ye in he European honeybees. Female varroa mies ener a larval cell approximaely 12 hours prior o ha cell being capped. Once he cell is capped, he female mie aaches o he larva and feeds. She will lay her firs egg in 2.5 o 3 days, and will coninue o lay an egg every 30 hours unil he young coninued on page 3

3 Oc meeing highlighs coninued bee emerges. The firs egg laid is always a male. The second egg will be a female. These progeny mae wihin he capped cell and he gravid female will emerge wih he young bee. The varroa mies ransmi numerous viruses o he bees. These viruses cause a group of sympoms ha can be idenified as Parasiic mie syndrome. The viruses ransmied include deformed wing virus (DWV), Israeli acue paralysis virus (IAPV), Kashmir bee virus (KBV), chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV), and black queen cell virus (BQCV). Ramesh srongly suppored inegraed pes managemen for varroa mies. He suggesed reaing early and reaing whenever needed o keep he varroa populaion below he hreshold for our locaion. 6 Small Hive Beele found in Eugene, Oregon by Judy Scher On Friday, Sep. 30, I discovered a small hive beele in wax cappings from a honey exracion. I was confirmed by he OSU honey bee lab. The SHB could have possibly flown in o he box of wax cappings from anoher area (up o 10 miles away), or found is way o he frames before I exraced. I saw no evidence of SHB in he hives. Be on he lookou, exrac your honey immediaely afer removing he supers, and sore your exraced frames properly. The small hive beele is dark, 3/16 inch in lengh, 1/8 inch in widh. If SHB has enered your hive you will see worm like larvae on he honey frames and dark feces like slime. If you suspec ha you have his beele in your bee yard please capure i and freeze i in a jar. Eiher send i direcly o he honey bee lab a OSU or bring i o me where I can ID i under he LCBA microscope, hen repor i o OSU. Food Sores November Early Spring One of he mos imporan winer chores is o hef he hive from he back boom o check if i s ligh in weigh. If so, i is low in honey sores. In he winer and early spring your bees will sarve if hey consume all of heir honey reserves or hey move o he edge of he hive where hey no longer conac honey frames. If you have a ligh hive when he bees are oo cold o fly, feed a solid source of pure carbohydrae in he form of fondan candy. I is very easy o apply on one of hose 50 degree days where you can quickly lif he hive cover and place he candy direcly on he frames or inner cover. Bees love fondan more han any oher candy in winer monhs. I s sof and, if hey decide o sore i, hey don have o spend energy evaporaing waer from i. I s fun o make jus be sure you don ea i before you ge i o your hives! BEE FONDANT (Noe: When doing his for he firs ime, make small baches. 4 cups sugar o 1 cup waer is a good amoun) 1 par waer: 4 pars sugar (by volume or weigh - I find ha i doesn' maer which, in his case). 1/4 easpoon vinegar per cup of sugar (if using 4 cups sugar, use 1 sp vinegar) Pu in pan and hea and sir unil i comes o a boil. Don le sugar burn! If i urns brown or dark an, i will make he bees sick. Boil for 3 minues wih cover on pan. Boil uncovered unil sof ball sage* (sars a 234 degrees F, ends a 243 degrees F) Turn off hea and cool o 200 degrees F Whip wih a whisk unil whie (give i 5 10 minues) Pour ono waxed paper on cookie shees Cool undisurbed. Cu up ino squares, separae wih waxed paper, sore in plasic bag in freezer. When feeding bees, warm fondan o room emp and pu on op of frames or around hole in inner cover. Do no expose bees o cold for more han several seconds. * The sof ball sugar sage is described in wonderful web sie, hps:// The differen sages are compared a around 4:29 minues on his video. Anoher noe: Don worry if you mess up and he fondan is oo sof or oo hard - he bees will appreciae i anyway! Submied by Judy Scher

7 A i C w s W i a i ( F O w C b J a p T r g Ocober Beekeeping Tips by Chuck Hun, LCBA Member 1. All mie srips and reamens should be removed some ime in Ocober, depending on which ype of mie srip was used and when i was placed in he hive. Grease paies will help o conrol racheal mies over he winer and can be kep on your hive all he ime. 2. Enrance reducers, if used, should be on he hives. Our hives have no been bohered by yellow jackes as badly as las year. I is sill necessary o monior and remove his pes. All hives need o be ipped forward slighly o shed rain over he winer. Hives should also be placed off he ground and be provided wih wind sheler. 3. Alhough he rains have come early his year lae feeding can someimes coninue unil mid or lae Ocober. Feed ligh hives a mixure of 2:1 sugar and waer. Bees should have a leas 50 pounds of honey for he winer. 4. Successful winering depends on a good hive populaion wih good healh, a good and producive queen, and adequae sores of honey for he winer. Make sure your hive has hese requiremens and nex spring you can wach he bees burs from he hive ready for he new season. O o C h A p f T a S m M J a n

8 Canadian Bee Exper Joins OSU Reprin from he Good Frui Grower websie Oregon Sae Universiy has hired an exper on bee pollinaors o fill a new exension posiion focused on improving he healh of honey bees and oher pollinaing insecs. Andony Melahopoulos comes o OSU from a pos-docoral posiion in pollinaion ecology a he Universiy of Calgary in Albera, Canada. Before earning his docorae a Dalhousie Universiy in Halifax, Nova Scoia, Melahopoulos spen 13 years in Albera, working on honey bee pess and diseases for Canada s naional honey bee research cener. He also sudied lesser-known species, including he alfalfa leafcuer bee and wild bees in lowbush blueberry fields in Alanic Canada and Maine. Andony Melahopoulos Exension pollinaor specialis, waches honey bees a OSU s Oak Creek Cener for Urban Horiculure. Melahopoulos is working wih he Oregon Deparmen of Agriculure o roll ou a saewide pollinaor educaion and safey plan in he nex few monhs. He is also forging ies wih Oregon s commercial beekeepers, farmers, pesicide applicaors, urban parks deparmens and ohers who play a role in keeping pollinaors healhy. We wan o give people he ools o keep Oregon pollinaor-friendly, Melahopoulos said. If we do our job righ, proecing pollinaors will merge seamlessly wih people s daily life and work. He joins wo oher bee healh expers recenly hired a OSU s College of Agriculural Sciences: Hannah Lucas and Jared Jorgensen. Lucas, who sared her job las November, sudies bee parasies and diseases and is assising wih he expansion of OSU Honey Bee Lab s diagnosic services for beekeepers. Jorgensen, who sared in March, also helps wih bee healh diagnosics and conducs field sudies in parnership wih commercial beekeepers. The hree posiions were made possible by a $14 million invesmen in OSU research and Exension by he 2015 Oregon Legislaure. Survey - Oher Types of Hives & Managemen by Ken Ograin, LCBA Member This survey was in he LCBA Sepember newsleer. We are repeaing i again in case you missed i. If you replied o he original survey please do no reply again. A he Augus meeing insead of having one speaker we had seup small groups wih wo experienced beekeepers heading each group. This allowed for a more open discussion wih members asking quesions. There was a few ha asked why we focus on Langsroh equipmen and no oher ypes of hives or even susainable or reamen free. A one ime many years ago LCBA did approach hese opics. In recen years Colony Collapse Disease developed and he science changed o focus on one plaform and he Varroa mie. Our presiden, Pam Leavi, suggesed ha we survey he membership o find ou if here was ineres in hese oher opics and if so we could pu ogeher a forum a an early meeing in he fuure. I am asking he following quesions and hope o ge feedback from hose wih ineres. Quesion #1 Are you keeping bees in equipmen oher han Langsroh? If so wha ype? Quesion #2 Are you ineresed in rying oher ypes of equipmen oher han Langsroh? If so wha ype? Quesion #3 Are you pracicing reamen free beekeeping? If so are you monioring Varroa? Quesion #4 Do you keep bees in Langsroh equipmen bu would be ineresed in learning more abou hese opics? If so wha would be your ineres? Each quesion asked has wo pars. Please answer boh. 9 Ten Things TO DO NOW To Help Your Bees 1. KNOW MITE NUMBERS Tes your bees o know Survive Winer, by Dr. Dewey M. Caron heir mie level as hey hunker down for he winer. You sill have some ime o rea hem (unless you have a non-reamen philosophy). Queens are winding down heir egg laying as colonies prepare o over-winer, so hive aduls, when mie populaion loads are high, can ge overwhelmed. Essenial oils or formic acid MAQS reamen can sill reduce mie numbers; Oxalic acid drip or HopGuard, once he brood is furher reduced, are oher reamen opions. 2. WINTER STORES Evaluae honey and pollen sores for winer. You should look in he op hive box o confirm he bees have sraegically posiioned capped honey above a compac brood area beween boxes or wihin he lower box. As he bees move up hrough winer hey consume hese sores. For brood boxes, seek frames of honey ouside, some sored bee bread hen brood. FAT Winer Bee. 3. FEED Feed bees now a sugar syrup if hey are ligh on sores. Feed one or more gallons of heavy sugar syrup (2 pars sugar o 1 par waer) o hives ha need i while bees are sill foraging. You may no need o feed all he colonies. If colonies are sill ligh on sores and weaher becomes cooler, swich o feeding dry sugar or sugar candy or fondan candy IF BEES NEED he sores. If you have fed syrup and hey have some sores, hold off on dry sugar feeding unil February or early March nex spring. 4. TAKE LOSSES IN FALL If very weak colonies, combine o sronger colony (if no disease (especially PMS eviden) or move honey filled frames o colonies ligh on sores or pu honey in freezer for spring feed. 5. WEATHER PROTECTION Proec hives from he wind and rain. Some beekeepers move colonies under sheler; ohers op o use covers (like recycled poliical signs, corrugaed in or plywood) ha overhang he hive op by a foo or more all around. This helps keep moisure ou of he hives and also provides bees wih a space for cleansing flighs in rainy weaher. 6. MOISTURE CONTROL Consider placing moisure conrol above he hive boxes o ac like a sponge o draw moisure off he colony. An venilaed rim filled wih moisure absorben maerial (wood shavings, absorben fabric, insulaion maerials) wih ample venilaion o he ouside, exra deep hive covers, or insulaion maerial direcly on op of he frames are ways o wick-off excess moisure. 7. VENTILATION Insure good hive venilaion wih space for moisure o rise and exi he colony by moving ouside frames slighly off he edge of he box. Consider leaving he boom screen open wih a dead air space beneah he hive; if you close he boom, il he hives slighly forward so moisure does no accumulae a he boom. 8. REDUCE ENTRANCES If you have no already done so, add an enrance reducer o proec he colony from mice, which someimes seek sheler in a nice warm hive for winer. Mice can do a lo of damage o comb, as well as urinae inside he colony. 9. SECURE HIVE COVERS Anchor hive covers wih a sone or brick. If hives are direcly exposed, consider providing a winer wind break (wooden barrier, hay bales, fencing ec.) 10. GET OFF THE GROUND Ge hives up off he ground o help comba moisure problems. Place hives up on palees, cinder blocks, ec., if you do no already use a hive sand. Creae dead air space below.
