Spurred on by his ineres in local naive plans used by buerflies, boanis and ecological consulan, Sewar Wechsler, has made i his goal o learn he ecology and idenificaion of he los and marginally surviving plans in he greaer Seale area - wih a special focus on hose needed by local buerflies. Over he las foureen years Sewar has buil up considerable knowledge abou hese los and declining plans. In his illusraed alk he will share he sories of some species ha are rare or have been exirpaed (los) in Seale. He will also share his houghs on why hey are now scarce or have disappeared and wha i migh ake o enhance or re-esablish heir populaions. I m sill new enough o Washingon o be hrilled every ime I learn a new plan someimes I m hrilled wo or hree imes due o no quie memorizing hem he firs ime. We had a wonderful join field rip wih The Washingon Buerfly Associaion and Scarabs up o Table Mounain. We saw a leas five differen Blues, several ypes of Swallowails, beeles, hover flies, ec. And hey all seemed as fascinaed wih he flora as we were. Also saw some kingbirds, and wesern Tanagers. Field Trip Chair, Louise Kulzer, oudid herself seing ha one up. We had a very good and deailed workshop on GPS use presened by our own Secreary, Ted Couillard, and his friend, Ed Robison. I was scheduled o go four hours and we wen abou five. If you hink your GPS- wheher a dedicaed uni or a phone-based one- ells you where you are and ha s all here is o i you are fooling yourself. And you re missing ou on a lo of he capabiliy of he sysem if you aren uilizing your GPS compuer sofware and he online resources of GIS. This workshop was so good we hope o offer i again his fall. Saurday, Sepember 10, 10 AM Redown Meadow, Cougar Mounain Leader: Rachael Mensching Come walk up he Redown Meadow rail o see fun woodland species. Once we ge o he meadow we will see a hisoric baseball field urned meadow. We will discuss he funcion of he meadow and see some species rarely seen in he area such as Garry Oak and Goldenrod. Bring waer and snacks and lunch. The hike is a moderaely difficul, some up hill on a very sable wide road. Mee a he railhead. Driving direcions: From I-90: Take Exi 13 and drive souh on Lakemon Blvd SE for 3.1 miles. Look for he enrance o he Red Town Trailhead on he lef side of he road. Hike hrough subalpine firs, glorious mounain scenery and he lae flowering genians, asers & fleabane on his splendid shor hike a M. Rainier. If we re lucky, he ladies resses will sill be ou. And because he season was so lae, here may be a fair number of summer mounain meadow species (painbrush, pensemon, lousewor, ec.). Someimes a frog or wo sis on a rock a he lower sream crossing. We ll hike pas he wo lakes and up oward he Unicorn Glacier (well, wha s lef of i) which feeds Snow Lake, nesled a he foo of Unicorn peak. Bring waer & lunch & your pass o ge ino he Park. The Fall plan sale is scheduled his year for Saurday, Ocober 1s. Our Spring and Fall plan sales are major fund raising aciviies for he Puge Sound Chaper. The sales are also an opporuniy o educae he public abou he beauy and value of naive plans. Here are five ways you can paricipae and suppor your organizaion. 1) We encourage you o join he sale commiee and help organize he sale. In paricular, we need a person who would enjoy leading he eam ha publicizes he sale. If you hope o make any observaion of he naive plan life along he Skyline Divide Trail in lae July, hese iems are imperaive. Despie he unruly hordes of biing black flies, you ll see a wealh of naive plan life. A mere wo miles from he railhead, you will emerge ono a ridgeline lusrous wih wildflowers and even beer, a siff breeze deerring he aforemenioned bloodhirsy insecs. When you arrive you can visi he rusic faciliies in he parking lo, which you will mos likely need o do afer 13 wising, hough scenic miles on Fores Service Road 37. We sighed a lovely sand of Alnus rubra as we drove o he railhead. From he sar of he rail he grade rises seeply, he oal gain in elevaion is abou 2,000 fee. Luckily, you are walking hrough fores for he firs mile or so. Shaded by rees like he Tsuga heerophylla, he rail winds hrough paches of glossy-leaved Ribes lacusre and Rubus specabalis. Of course several ypes of wildflowers bloom along he rail such as Aquilegia formosa and Tiarella rifoliaa. My husband was paricularly aken by he Clinonia uniflora, commonly known as Queen s Cup. The real show begins once you emerge ino he meadows ha do he rail near he ridgeline. Arnica laifolia, Lupinus laifolius and Valeriana sichensis all wave lazily in a dazzling apesry of gold, sapphire and snowy whie blooms. This ime of year he Verarum viride is jus preparing o flower. Noneheless, I am quie fond of heir ribbed charreuse leaves which are showy enough in heir own righ. Prepare yourself when you climb over he las hill and walk ou ono he ridgeline. Afer baling winged predaors for wo or so miles you will no be prepared for he glorious alpine splendor ha awais you. M. Baker sood ou in sharp relief agains he blue sky and fields of Lupinus lyalli coaed he mounainside like a purple beard. We walked souh and enjoyed he views. Phlox diffusa grows profusely on he rocks here. We also found some Phyllodoce emperiformis in bloom. The Skyline Divide Trail ruly feels like a differen world from Seale, a real geaway, and i is cerainly reasonable for a day hike. Jus don forge he bug repellen.
