2 LTA LPINA Page 2 PACELINE A Lesson Learned Mike Turek I guess I should have read Mel Maalouf's aricle on avoiding crashes! Afer 30 years of crash free biking, I made a key misake which Mel poined ou ha I wan o serve as reminder o you. Look ahead! Which means knowing he road condiions coming. Even when riding alone, you can find yourself checking ou he pavemen cracks - if you find yourself doing his STOP! Unil he crash, his was an epic ride. I sared a Big Basin Redwood Sae Park, norh of Sana Cruz, headed down pas Boulder Creek, up Alba Rd (wow, wha a raining climb!), along he coas for 20 miles and up Pescadero Rd alernaing beween warm sunny dry areas and we cold redwood shade. Topping ou a Skyline, I had a choice - head back he way I knew o Saraoga gap or ake shorer way down La Honda, a road I did no know and looked very wisy on he map. I chose he laer, bu headed down like i was a local road I remember clearly he pavemen sealing and changes in asphal. Las hing I recall was he 20mph sign. Luckily some good Samarians sopped raffic as I was knocked ou cold in he middle of his blind curve. They dragged me o side of road, called 911 and wrapped me in a blanke despie all he blood from my face plan. I was admied o Trauma a Sanford Medical Cener (couldn' have asked for a beer place o crash) where a Ca Scan showed wha many had suspeced: coon. They kep me for overnigh observaion. My face unforunaely is prey ugly. The res is jus some road rash, nohing broken luckily. I jus hope if you read my aricle and remember my face, you'll be reminded again abou safey: Of course, wear a helme - i saved my life Research your roads (I found ou laer from a fireman, here were 2 oher spills in he same curve earlier in he day by ou of owners - a local I alked o aferward said, "Of course, I never ride La Honda in winer.") As we look back o club aciviies, we saw growh in a lo of areas. We helped wih wo sancioned Kingsbury Hill Climb Time Trials. One saw a former Ala Alpina Cycling Club racer se a junior record wih a sub 37 minue ime. The second of he wo was he NCNCA regional Hill Climb Time Trial Championship and we had a grea field for urnou. Rober Braun is ireless in puing on he Pinenu Cracker wih coninued growh. The Challenge is coninuing o grow in ridership and qualiy. Our ride already has a repuaion for a premier suppor sysem and a sellar course. I don know if you noiced, bu Luher Pass, Woodfords Canyon and Monior pass on boh sides have grea new pavemen. I is like he CalTrans if paving our course for us! We almos sold ou las year, so ell all your friends his year hey need o ge in early. Regisraion is open and we are keeping 2012 prices he same for hose who regiser for he 2013 ride in Sco Herman and Rober Braun doubled our Cyclocross oupu his year and he Davis Creek course is a grea venue for Cyclocross. The weekly race series was prey fun wih he highligh for me being a grea junior urnou. One of he Juniors is saring o win B races and i won be long ill Cole Pinher is making us swea in he A races. As far as riding goes, I have been enjoying he mounain bike riding in he fall. I even rode Connecor- Corral he las week of November. I was jus abou he bes rail condiions I have ever seen up here. I will be sad o see he snow come. Wih he foul weaher afoo, I am no looking forward o riding in i, so I hope i snows a lo so I can ski insead of ride. Alhough, ruh be old, I would raher ride han ski. Skiing is jus somehing o do when we can ride. We have a couple of new board members for 2013 wih Frank Dixon sepping in for Peer Cosa. Peer has given a solid block of years o he club so le s wish him well. Dave Scarbourough will be aking he ride leader spo ha Ellen has held diligenly in he las few years. There were over 120 aendees from 38 saes and Canada. This included 85 bicycle and pedesrian advocacy groups from large organizaions like Bike Texas, SF Bike Coaliion & Cascade Bicycle Club o local groups like Ala Alpina Cycling Club, Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaliion and he Reno Bike Projec. We convened for a fanasic neworking even over 2 days on he Queen Mary in Long Beach. Highlighs from sessions aended: Nonprofi Organizaion 501(c)3 vs 501(c)4: The C3 is a chariable organizaion ha allows for donaions, gifs, and membership dues o be ax exemp. The C4 is apoliical advocacy organizaion ha can culivae, endorse public candidaes and campaign for candidaes, bu no ax exempion. Many advocacy organizaions have boh. Long Beach Americas Mos Bike-Friendly Ciy : Officially Long Beach, CA has no been graned his saus by any organizaion, bu he Mayor and members of he Ciy Council and saff have selfdeclared his disincion as an inenion o mobilize heir effors and resources o become such a ciy. All were impressed by racks, corrals, banners, racks, signals and counless people riding heir bikes o work, school and for errands. There were 94 echnical sessions and 47 posers presened over he 3.5 days. Conference suppored by US Deparmen of Transporaion, Federal Highway Adminisraion (FHWA), Bikes Belong, League of American Bicycliss, Naional Cener for Safe Roues o School, Kaiser Permanene, Associaion of Pedesrian and Bicycle Professionals and more. There were many sessions on Safe Roues o School and MAP-21(Moving Ahead for Progress in he 21s Cenury)(he new federal ransporaion bill) and Bicycle Safey Educaion and Bicycle and Pedesrian Planning and Design. Many of hese sessions were very valuable o me in my new role as Safe Roues o School Coordinaor for Nevada a Nevada Deparmen of Transporaion(NDOT). Long Beach was a fanasic locaion for he conference as i was very Bicycle and Walking friendly. The own sure has changed for he beer much since my college days in LA area in he 1970 s. We need o increase he ride fees for 2013 o cover significan increases in projeced expenses. To minimize he impac on riders and encourage early regisraion, 2012 pricing will be exended o he end of he calendar year. Doesn' quie sound righ!) and voluneered o help coninue o make his club he bes bike club around. Welcome new reasurer Frank Dixon and ride coordinaor Dave Scarborough. Also, a big hank you o deparing board members Peer Cosa and Ellen Sherril. Peer has been affiliaed wih Ala Alpina from shorly afer Noah's Ark resed on dry land and has served as road cleanup direcor, vice presiden, presiden and reasurer. Tha is one heck of a lo of service! Thank you Pee. Ellen has pu on some very cool rides over he las couple of years bu she is oo busy hese days spanking he ladies of CycloCross and Road Racing o realisically coninue o lead he way for us in ha manner.
