2 CRUZIN Page 2 National Corvette Museum News HISTORY OF CHEVROLET RACING EXHIBIT OPENS AT CORVETTE MUSEUM The National Corvette Museum s Exhibit Hall has been transformed to feature a special themed exhibit. For a period of about seven months, that theme is the history of Chevrolet racing. The story of Chevrolet racing is told from the early days of Louis Chevrolet as a racing driver for Buick, through the AMA ban on racing, Chevrolet Racing s involvement in NASCAR, and the Le Mans winning Corvettes. Significant stories are told through the display of various cars and artifacts, from engines including one from a C5-R, and a fuel injection cutaway, to race suits, trophies from various races and more. The idea of the exhibit started with Corvette s success at Le Mans over the last few years, and with the recent heyday of how well Corvette Racing is doing, I wanted to look at how Chevrolet wound up at this point, said Derek E. Moore, Curator at the National Corvette Museum. Really, the way to do that was to start all the way back with Louis Chevrolet and his success as a race car driver. Chevrolet is born out of the early days of Buick racing with Louis Chevrolet driving, so, we started with Corvette Racing s success and backed it up to the roots of Buick and what Louis Chevrolet was doing driving for them. Highlights of the exhibit include a 1909 Buick Model 16 Indy Racecar, 1910 Buick Bug, 1915 Cornelian, 1957 Chevrolet Black Widow NASCAR, 1983 Monte Carlo SS Pepsi Challenger NASCAR, 1989 ZR1 24-Hour World Record Corvette, 1997 Chevrolet C5.R Homologation car, 1997 Monte Carlo chrome-wrapped NASCAR, C6.R GT1 Test Car and 2010 Chevrolet Cruze WTCC Race Car. With the early Louis Chevrolet driven cars, it was a matter of knowing what cars were still in existence and then asking to borrow those. Especially the pivotal cars from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway even before the famed Indy 500 existed, said Moore. Moore says that while each car played an important role in Chevrolet s racing history; they also each have a side story that makes the exhibit have layers of interesting history. I used information from Chevrolet s press releases throughout history and looked at significant stories of people who connected to that. Like the re-introduction of Chevrolet to NASCAR in 1983 with the Monte Carlo. We looked for a really cool story around that time which led us to Darrell Waltrip and the Pepsi Challenger car. Then there s the Black Widow an awesome car, but the story on top of that is that the Black Widows were the cars that led to the ban on fuel injection in NASCAR. The Chevrolet Racing: Louis to Le Mans exhibit runs through January 4, 2019 in the National Corvette Museum s Exhibit Hall. For more information on planning a visit to the Museum and NCM Motorsports Park, visit corvettemuseum.org and click Visit Plan a Visit. The Museum is open daily, 8am-5pm CT and can be reached at VETTE. It is located at I-65, Exit 28 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. 13 CRUZIN Page 13 What is an Automobile Rally? By Dan Smith, River City Corvette Club Chattanooga The River City Corvette Club has previously organized many club sanctioned Poker Run Rallies. But many more versions of car rallies exist. Let club officers know if you d be interested in participating in some version of a Gimmick Rally. Some have called automobile rallies, the game that takes you places. Each participating automobile generally includes a driver and navigator who carefully follow instructions directing them along a given course. At the end of the prescribed course, some form of scoring determines which entrant most closely followed the course instructions. Automobile rallies come in various shapes and sizes, but most are non-racing events held on open public roads. Rally teams include friends, couples, and entire families, and any type of moving vehicle can be used. Timed Rallies (aka: Time-Speed-Distance Rallies) In a timed rally, you try to stay on time, arriving at checkpoint locations neither early nor late. TSD rallies are for the serious rally enthusiast and can involve expensive equipment to participate at the most serious level. That being said, TSD rallies can be written to be fairly simple, and involve nothing more complicated than using a partner as navigator, your correctly working speedometer and a stop watch. Challenging but fun. Performance Rallies (Rally Racing, Stage Rallies) Also for the more serious participants, performance rallies are racing events held on closed roads. Challenging participants and their automobile. Gimmick Rallies A gimmick rally is full of puzzles and tricks. The participants final score is based on information recorded on their score sheet, which shows how well they solved the puzzles and avoided being tricked. No speed or time is involved, other than a deadline to be at the finish location. The rally usually finishes at a local restaurant 2-3 hours after start times. Rally entrants may leave the starting point at staggered times. Usually three to five minutes apart, according to how many entrants there are. At the start of a gimmick rally, each entrant is given at least two sets of instructions; general instructions (GIs) and route instructions (RIs). The general instructions are the ground rules for the event, containing definitions, priorities, and other information. The route instructions direct you along a course from the start location to the finish location. Entrants should not get lost if they simply follow the Route Instructions (RIs). Other types of instructions can interact in various ways with the general instructions, with the route instructions, and with each other.

14 CRUZIN Page 14 What is an Automobile Rally? Continued By Dan Smith, River City Corvette Club Chattanooga Gimmick rallies often have checkpoints along the course, where entrants stop their car and interact with rally personnel, who might throw some extra gimmicks their way. (For example: Filling in questions from obvious signs/buildings along the route; or, collecting some kind of item along the way; a treasure hunt item, to be turned in with your score sheet. Gimmick rallies are often combined with Poker Run rallies. At the finish, entrants may receive an answer sheet (the "Critique") that explains all the gimmicks, if used. Gimmick rally types differ mainly in the scoring mechanisms used to determine who figured out which gimmicks. Any particular gimmick rally may use one or more of these scoring mechanisms, as gimmick rally types are often combined in a rally design. Course Marker (CM) Rallies As you follow the route instructions, you encounter course markers (posted signs with letter number combinations) and record them on your score sheet. After recording a course marker, you bring into effect a supplemental instruction that corresponds to the number on the course marker. Thus, course markers can be both a scoring device and a way to return you to the Route Instructions course after you catch a gimmick route instruction. Q&A (Question and Answer) Rallies Various questions are interspersed among the route instructions. At the appropriate points in the rally, entrants record their answers on the score sheet. (For example, the route instructions might take you past a McDonald s restaurant. The question on your route instruction sheet might say Golden? Where, you would fill-in the blank with the expected response of arches, to receive credit for a correct answer at the end of the rally as your sheet is being scored. Photo Rallies At the start, each entrant receives a number of photos. As they follow the route instructions, they identify photos that depict the view from their car and record on their score sheet the mileage along the route at which they occurred. A working odometer is needed. Hare and Hound Rallies Each entrant follows the route by finding markings (generally mounds of flour/lime) at intersections. If a mound is found, then the correct course may have turned. If so, then a confirming mound will be located a short distance (less than ¼ mile) down the correct course. A working odometer is needed; the adjusted mileage closest to that of the rally master wins. Treasure Hunts (Map Clue Rallies) Entrants use clues and riddles to find streets or landmarks on the provided map. Then they lay out their own course to travel to these locations to gather the requested information for their score sheet. Treasure Hunt Rallies can be combined with other variations of a Gimmick Rally.
