1 Pit Previews Seattle Outboard Association April years of Northwest outboard racing FROM THE BOTHELL REPORTER April 3, 2017 By Joseph Livarchik The reincarnation of an old classic will soon bring the nostalgic sounds of hydroplanes back to the shores of Kenmore. The fourth annual Kenmore Hydroplane Cup Slough Race will return to north Lake Washington on April 8. Sponsored by Seattle Water Sports, 192 Brewery and the Seattle Outboard Association, the vintage inboard and 45SS tunnel boat exhibition races will take place in front of the North Lake Marina and Kenmore Air Harbor. Some 25 boats are expected to compete at this year s event. The two- and three-cylinder outboard boats will leave the Kenmore Boat Launch for a timed upriver race on the Sammamish River Slough, with one boat running at a time. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. with races starting at noon and running until 4 p.m. Admission for the event is free. P. 1: Bothell Reporter article on Kenmore Slough P.2 P. 4: March meeting minutes P. 5:-6 Kenmore Slough Photos and ads P. 7 Swap N Shop P. 8: SOA Leadership P. 9: 2017 Race Schedule This issue The day before the event, slough race organizers will hold a Hydro Happy Hour at the 192 Brewery. Hydroplanes will be on display and drivers from races past and present will be in attendance. The slough race, which dates back to 1933, returned after a 38-year hiatus in It was discontinued after a boat accident in 1976 and as permitting and insurance costs became a burden for organizers. Prior to its hiatus, the event drew crowds of spectators between 40,000 and 80,000. The idea to reintroduce the event came after local artist, Amberly Gaul Culley, organized the Sammamish Slough race exhibit at Kenmore City Hall in Though no longer drawing crowds in the tens of thousands, race co-chair Jan Shaw said last year s event saw its largest turnout since it returned. She estimated a crowd of more than 3,000, which she attributed to favorable weather conditions. Shaw, 66, said continuing the event holds significant importance for those, such as herself, who remember the slough race s previous incarnation. I think people in the Seattle area are so familiar with Seafair and the big hydroplanes. Seattle Outboard puts out 14 events throughout the year, though we don t have anything in King County except this. That s why we ve kept it going, she said. Kenmore resident J.W. J-Dub Myers, 43, will be racing in the April 8 event and has competed in the previous three slough races since the cup returned in This year, Myers plans to race in his father s C Stock Runabout, a boat which he said his father ran in the final slough race in I m a bit of a nerd when it comes to the history of the sport of boat racing, he said.myers, who competes in eight to 10 races a year, is entering his 35th year of boat racing. He took up the sport as a 9-year-old and called the slough race a cool part of outboard racing history. As a child, Myers recalled hearing his boat-racing father talk about the event with his Kierra Marquard and Jack Peterson SOA would like to thank Pat Gleason for cleaning and organization the SOA safety gear for the upcoming season. Also thanks to SRP for donating new bags for the helmets. The gear will be stored in the SOA club truck for the 2017 race season. A sign out sheet will assist with distribution in a more organized fashion. *****REMINDER TO VOTE AND TURN IN THE BY LAW BALLOT ITEMS BY THE APRIL 25TH GENERAL MEETING****** CONTINUED ON PAGE 3.

3 Meeting Minutes March General Meeting 3/28/17 *Black Lake- Classes will be picked at the April board meeting. Ron mentioned that the board of Seattle Drag & Ski liked the classes they had last year, but there may be a change or two. Kyle Lewis asked if they would consider CSR. Ron mentioned that the board would discuss it and get back to everyone by the April general meeting. *Eatonville- Pro Divisional. Ron said that the contract deposit has been sent and he has been in contact with Bill Diamond on the paperwork for the event is already in motion. Further discussion on location and security if it is brought down. *Angle Lake- Mod Divisional. Matt said that he is going to start on the paperwork soon. It was asked if there is going to be an NAC at the race and Matt said that he is working on sponsors for what class is interested in holding one at the event. *Lawrence- Bill is working on the contract and race paperwork. It will be the North American Championship for ASH and ASR. Old Business: *Bylaw Update- Ballots are due by April 25th which is also the next general meetings date. Ron advised that all should vote. *Pit Preview- Kyle Bahl is the new pit preview chairman and he has put the first issue on the website. Matt is going to be giving Kyle an updated list and Kyle will be sending out those that are asking for a mailed copy. *Historical Society Update- John Adams has submitted all of the invoices to the HS to start the process of our payment we were granted. *Race Directors meeting- Ron reported that he held the meeting at his house and that it went well. Susan thanked Ron for a good breakfast! *Work party- The work party was held on March 18th at the Shaw s house at 10am. A lot of stuff got done and organized. Ron wanted to thank all that were there to help; Jim Nilsen, Dave Anderson, Howard Shaw, Jan Shaw, Rick Sandstrom, Matt Yarno, JW Myers, Drew Thompson, Jayson Shrock and his son Keigan. *J Awards- It was discussed at the board meeting how we could do something different for the J classes. It was decided that we will have plaques and at each event the J kids will receive a nameplate. 1st thru 3 rd will get an award as well and that is based upon the race directors discretion. JW will be making all of the plaques and Ana will get the nameplates made for all of the race sites. *SOA stickers- Matt is going to be bringing a sample at the April board meeting. They will be available in various sizes. *Schedule Cards- John Peeters is making the cards and they are on order. They will be completed and ready to pass out by the Kenmore slough event which is April 8th Continued from page 1 buddies and said he always wanted to relive their racing experiences on his own. The slough race had discontinued by the time Myers took up the sport. Mainly, most of the competitors, myself included, got into racing as the family sport that it is, he said. I m personally a thirdgeneration racer. I ll get some of my other buddies into racing and I try and promote the sport as best I can. I ll give guys the opportunity to run the boat and then if they want to do it, can compete on their own. It s like being a drug dealer: you always give them the first one free. Myers said he believes the slough race draws boat racers partly because of the history behind it as well as for the opportunity to race on the river, noting riverracing isn t as common these days. For the general public, he said the slough race provides a chance for people to witness an event that until four years ago, they had only heard about. People in Kenmore or Bothell that have been there for any duration of time, they all knew about [the race] and they used to go down to the slough and watch it, he said. I think it s kind of a cool history throwback for one day a year. When asked what he s looking forward to most about this year s Kenmore Hydroplane Cup, Myers doesn t hesitate with a response. Just doing it. Just simply doing it, he said. There s no $10,000 prize money check that I m aware of, so it s just reliving the experience. That s my big thing: to have the experience that a lot of my racing heroes had. Growing up in the sport, every oldschool racer always talked about the slough race. I m just into it for the nostalgia part of it and I won t miss it for anything.

4 Meeting Minutes March General Meeting 3/28/17 *Rescue boat- Ron said the boat is almost done. There were a couple of people that went and helped Daren with the trailer and boat throughout this course and Ron wanted to thank all who have been involved. John Adams will be housing the boat for the club. *45 entry- The board discussed this matter and have revoked the extra $10.00 charge that was first proposed. *Roundtable- *Kyle Bahl wanted to mention that since there is configuration in the park at Castlerock this year that it is advised that as many cars that they can get them to park in the upper parking area for better access for boats to maneuver. *Dave Anderson said that the Kirkland Eagles is going to be holding an auction and raffle event at their location on April 8th at 4pm to help with the property taxes. Dave is going to be donating a ride or two for the new folks in boats at Eatonville as this is a place where we have held our meetings at for the last 40 years. *Kyle mentioned that Pat Gleason that wants to handle the SOA safety gear and keep it in his trailer. Board will discuss further. *Raffle- *Plastic Easter Eggs/APBA license plate/soa rag- Kierra Marquard *Chocolate bunny- Matt Yarno *APBA license plate/tool organizer/soa rag- Dave Germaine *APBA license plate/small took kit/soa rag- Jeff Kelly *Tool box/apba license plate/soa rag- Dave Cossette *Skull salt & pepper shakers- Trey Marquard *T handle driver set/ APBA license plate/soa rag- Matt Yarno *APBA license plate/soa rag/lunch bag- Dave Cossette *Moving blanket/ APBA license plate- Nathan Adams *Cookies/ APBA license plate/soa rag- Jeff Kelly *Mystery Beverage #1- Chas Dodge *Mystery Beverage #2- Nathan Adams No pass the pot Motion to adjourned at 8:49pm 1st Dwight Malhiot 2nd Susan Rautenburg April Birthdays: April 13 Sheri Greaves, Tony Perman April 14 Jerry Kelson April 15 Chad Eagon April 16 Eric Peterson April 18 Kay Brewer April 21 Aaron Peterson April 23 Mike Perman April 26 Aaron Salmon 2017 Kenmore Hydroplane Cup Results Open Class Results 1) Aaron Salmon, Shoreline, WA - 3: ) Daren Goehring, Marysville, WA 3: ) Dave Anderson, Kenmore, WA 3: ) Kyle Lewis, Seattle, WA 4:10.31 Glen Boersema, Snohomish, WA Time Not Taken J Micheal Kelly, Bonney Lake, WA Time Not Take JW Myers, Kenmore, WA Time Not Taken 2 Cylinder Results 1) Bob Wartinger, Seattle, WA 3: ) Tim Mattson, Seattle, WA - 4: ) Pat Gleason, Tacoma, WA 4: ) Gary Hansen, Federal Way, WA 6:03.51 J Hydro Results 1) Jack Peterson, Seattle, WA 1: ) Fynn Peterson, Seattle, WA 1:21.96
