MACC TRACKS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER June CHAPTER OFFICERS President & Executive Board Member: Wayne Allen Vice President & Executive Board Member: David Overton Secretary & Executive Board Member: Carol Harding Treasurer & Executive Board Member: Jim Harris Past President & Executive Board Member: Hoke Graham Membership: Sara Boehme NCM Ambassador: Fred Atkins Newsletter: Joy Wade Web Site Chair: Thom Williamson Social Chair: Linda Barnes Sunshine Chair: Phyllis Overton Message from the President Wayne Allen It's June, and it's the heart of cruise-in and trip season. Tell us where you would like to go, and we'll try to make it happen. If you missed MACC's car show last month, and you missed the Vettes 4 Vets event at Talledega last weekend, then you missed some of the highlights of owning a Corvette. A lot of us had a hard day in the heat and sun, but we also had a great time driving around the track in our Corvettes at (?) speed There are a number of trips that we plan to make in the coming weeks and months, we certainly hope that you will make some of them. Please, please watch your s from MACC, and if possible, join us on Facebook at MACC- The Mid Alabama Corvette Club to keep up with happenings. See you all at the next meeting..
Message from the Vice President: David Overton Summer is here time to let the top down, let the wind blow your hair, and have fun in your Corvette. The month of May was a good one starting off with MACC's Vette Spectacular Corvette show and ending with Vettes 4 Vets track day at Talledega Speedway. I have heard from several of the folks that attended the Vette Spectacular. They all reported having a great time, and thanked us for putting on the show. Vettes 4 Vets track day was a blast with almost 200 Corvettes and other cars showing up to drive around the track and raising money for our American Veterans. We are planning a trip to the Rattlesnake Saloon in Tuscumbia Saturday June 28 th. This will be our club meeting for the month of June. We will eat lunch at the Rattlesnake Saloon. We will meet at the Cracker Barrel in Gardendale exit 271 off I-65, Saturday at 9am and leave there around 9:15am. Bring your radios tuned to 7.7. If you want to program your GPS, the address for the Rattlesnake Saloon is 1292 Mt. Mills Rd. Tuscumbia, Al. This should be a fun meeting / road trip! If you have an idea for a trip please let us know and always keep a check on your . We sometimes put out last minute trips, and you won t want to miss the fun!
National Corvette Museum News Fred Atkins Construction at the National Corvette Museum's Motorsports Park is well underway, and getting closer everyday to its grand opening at the end of August. The NCM Motorsports Park will feature over three miles of track in its maximum configuration. The track can be divided into two configuration which will allow for a two mile,13-turn west course, and a one mile,10-turn east course. There is also a huge 16 acre skid pad for autocross competition which is the paved area on the east side of the property. According to a recent from the NCM Motorsports Park, the lime stabilization process has been completed and now a fine-grade road base is being placed on the track. The track's guardrails will soon be up and hopefully we'll start to see paving on the course in the near future. Membership News Sara Boehme We keep growing!! 5 I hope everyone can find a little sunshine in every day. Happy Birthday to our MACC members who have a birthday in June: Ann Davis, Sara Boehme Jim Harris Anne Henry Deanne Johnson John Mascia, Tricia Lawerence, Joy Winchester Steve Vaughan Phyllis Beisecker. Happy Anniversary to these MACC members: Aronld and Laura Reichert Tony and Cathy Crapet Pat and Penny DeSantis Bryan and Angela Nations Brit and Kristin Mansell John and Nancy Mascia Charlie and Robin Carter Please keep Janice Woodard and her family in your prayers her father passed away recently. Corvette Trivia Thom Williamson The 1974 Chevrolet Corvette is the first with rear "Rubber Bumpers". The new shape removes the spoiler at the back of the car and replaces it with a smooth down-sloping deck. The bumper could not be manufactured reliably in one piece this year. The solution was to manufacture it in two pieces and put them together, this resulted in a seam down the middle of all the '74 models. The new bumper added 30 more pounds to the car. Due to the weight changes, minor suspension changes were made to the front and rear springs. This was the last year for the "Big Block" and the last year that catalytic converters were not used. Cast aluminum wheels were on the order sheet but due to manufacturing problems none were actually delivered. A new "Gymkhana" option was introduced that beefed up the spring rates and suspension. 7 A Note from Mike Williams Thank You MACC! Brother and I want to thank MACC soooo much for the Power Wheels C7 Corvette convertible you gave away at the Vette Spectacular that our Ah-Pa (Mike Williams) won for us. We were so excited. As you can see we also wore our Corvette shirts for our first ride. I didn't have any trouble at all driving. Brother was a little short and had trouble reaching the accelerator pedal. So, Ah-Pa put a cushion behind him to scoot him up a little in the seat and then he did just fine. Except, now every time he takes off he spins the wheels. Ah- Pa said that our Corvette doesn't have "launch control" like his does to avoid wheel spins. But we don't care, we like to spin the wheels. Ah-Pa said we would have to be nice and share with each other or he would park it. So, we have been taking turns driving. Maybe next year we can enter our Corvette in the Vette Spectacular and hopefully win our first trophy. Thanks again to MACC. We really love our new Vette. Annabelle and Everett
Meet Mr. William W. Morgan, Jr. U.S. Army Air Corps, Corporal
Mr. Morgan served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 until He initially was a pilot cadet in training. During a particular training flight that Mr. Morgan was flying, the plane dropped 10,000 feet suddenly which made him sicker than a dog. He had to fly the plane between telephone lines. Needless to say, Mr. Morgan was re-assigned to serve as a Radar Technician. He served state-side and his responsibilities included consulting and advising discharges where jobs might be. He helped to place soldiers who were being discharged from their jobs. Mr. Morgan says he learned to carry out my duties as best as I could in whatever I did, during his years in service. Mr. Morgan was one of the guests at the annual Vettes 4 Vets track day on May 31. MACC s Carol Harding was assigned to be Mr. Morgan s helper on Saturday. It was his second year to attend the event. He loves to catch a ride in a Corvette to fly around the track. After Mr. Morgan made his first track run, he requested a second run in a convertible. Joel Denney, President of Alabama Corvette Club, and his beautiful red convertible came to the rescue. Mr. Morgan had a great time, and Joel says he will be giving Mr. Morgan a ride again next year. Mr. Morgan was one of the many people in attendance at the Talladega track event. Tags from all over the U.S. and several from Canada were spotted. The New Zealand visitors probably won the distance traveled trophy
! Thank you Carol Harding for taking care of Mr. Morgan! Veterans are what Vettes 4 Vets is all about! MACC members are always happy to help with this wonderful event. To all of MACC: A Note from Mark Davis Thanks for all your help and support for another great Talladega weekend. I know you could have done something else especially with family, but I know all the people who came and all, the veterans had a great time due to your efforts. All I heard was praise about our event and they appreciate what all we did. So thanks from the BOD of V4Vs Sincerely Mark Davis
