4 Message from Special Olympics New Zealand CEO WE ARE thrilled to welcome you to the second Trans Tasman Tournament that Special Olympics New Zealand has hosted here in New Zealand. Hamilton is a wonderful location for this special event and I have no doubt that you will enjoy the first class sports venues where our athletics and swimming competitions will be held. I know that all the athletes taking part in this event have been training hard to prepare for this event. It is a real privilege to be able to see all our athletes finally reaching their goal to represent their Club and State here in the Waikato. We are very proud to have 515 athletes and coaches from New Zealand and Australia registered for this event. I am delighted to also welcome the additional 120+ family members that have travelled from far and wide to cheer our incredible athletes on in the pool and on the track. We are pleased that there has not been the need to impose any quotas so that every Special Olympics member that wishes to take part can do so. That is why we chose a central location that has world class facilities. When we established this Trans Tasman series back in 2010 we were keen to create an event that offered an opportunity to athletes that may not have had the capability to travel overseas for a lengthy event such as a World Games. Essentially an international event of shorter duration like this opens the door to athletes of all abilities. In this respect I am so pleased to see a number of high needs athletes and their families/ caregivers taking part in the developmental races we are offering for the first time in Hamilton. This is what Special Olympics is all about! This event is not about Australia 2 TRANS-TASMAN TOURNAMENT 2016

5 versus New Zealand, it is about each athlete wearing their Club and State colours with immense pride in the style of true sportsmanship. We wish to sincerely thank our valued national and local sponsors, volunteers and supporters who have contributed to this event in We cannot continue to deliver high quality sports services to our communities without your valuable support, thank you. I know that the Waikato community will embrace you with warmth and genuine hospitality. We have built a huge empathy with this community over the last 12 months and I am proud to say that all Hamiltonians have done their very best to make us feel so welcome. Please enjoy! 6 Special Olympics History EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER Founder of Special Olympics Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, the fifth of nine children of Joseph P Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Eunice received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Stanford University, California. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a sister of President John F Kennedy. In 1963 Mrs Shriver started a summer day camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at her home in Maryland, focusing on physical activities and sports. In 1968 Special Olympics began and the first Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago. In 1988 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) signed an agreement officially endorsing and giving recognition to Special Olympics. Special Olympics is an unprecedented global movement involving three million athletes and many more supporters which, through quality sports training and competition, improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they touch. Special Olympics empowers people with intellectual disabilities to realise their full potential and develop their skills through year-round sports training and competition. As a result, Special Olympics Athletes become fulfilled and productive members of their families and the communities in which they live. Today, Special Olympics stands as a world leader in the field of intellectual disability and has sharpened the focus on its mission as not just nice, but critical, not just as a sports organisation for people with intellectual disabilities, but also as an effective catalyst through sport for social change. Children and adults with intellectual disabilities, who participate in Special Olympics exhibit courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but their voices as well. 4 TRANS-TASMAN TOURNAMENT 2016

7 Special Olympics New Zealand Special Olympics began in New Zealand in 1983 at a Hutt Valley swimming club. The founder, Grant Quinn and his wife Wendy were introduced to Special Olympics and took the first New Zealand team (4 swimmers) to the 1983 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. The first New Zealand National Games were held in 1985 at Lower Hutt. In 1985 Special Olympics New Zealand, a Charitable Trust was formed. The organisation in New Zealand is governed by a Board of Trustees volunteering their time and expertise. It is licensed by Special Olympics International to operate in New Zealand. It is a unitary sports organisation consisting of a single legal entity operating nationally, regionally and locally. Athletes Oath Let me win. but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt These words were spoken by Roman Gladiators entering the arena. The athletes recite the oath at the Opening Ceremony of each competition to remind everyone, themselves included that they are part of a brave tradition and that the goal is to compete to the best of their ability. 10 Host City Hamilton Established in 1864, Hamilton City served as a refuge for outlying settlers in case of renewed war against nearby Kingitanga forces. Hamilton remained as a small provincial centre until the draining of the surrounding Waikato swamps, after which point it grew as a service centre for the region s developing dairy farms. Today, Hamilton, known as Kirikiriroa in Te Reo Māori - encompasses a land area of about 110km² on the banks of the Waikato River, and is home to approximately 157,000 people, making it New Zealand s fourth-largest city. Hamilton is the heart of the Waikato region, which stretches from the Bombay Hills in the north, to the slopes in the Ruapehu range in the south, with the outer region reaching Mokau on the west coast, and across to the Coromandel Peninsula on the east coast. In the heart of the city, you can follow the mighty Waikato River, which flows from the mouth of Lake Taupo for 425km before depositing into the Tasman Sea at Port Waikato. The Waikato River is New Zealand s longest river, and its banks in the city are often buzzing in the summer time as locals enjoy picnics and walks. You can visit the magnificent parks and gardens, a thriving cultural precinct, and many other of the eclectic mix of leisure and activity choices the city has to offer. On the outskirts of the Waikato, you will be greeted by many farmers in their luscious green pastures, and can view the developing horticulture areas which grow blueberries, kiwifruit and asparagus. Out to the west coast, you can indulge in an ice-cream while watching some surfers take on the biggest waves our country has to offer at Ngarunui Beach in Raglan. 8 TRANS-TASMAN TOURNAMENT 2016

28 SPORT OVERVIEW 130 athletes entered to compete in track and field events at the 2016 Trans Tasman Competition. Athletes must wear their bib number at all times during the competition. Athletes must be at marshalling 6 races prior to their scheduled race prior to their event. Results will be posted on Boards outside of the Officials Room (to the right of the Grandstand by the Finish Line). In some Heats, athletes will be divisioned based on their ability, rather than gender; and then for the Finals events every attempt will be made to division based on gender then ability, where this cannot be achieved events will offered as Co-ed events, and only one set of awards will be presented. NB:- in compliance with Special Olympics New Zealand competition policies, all attempts will be made to ensure equitable events are offered, however all heat divisions will consist of eight competitors to ensure we get through the entire meets programme in a timely manner. Finals will have a maximum of six competitors per event. And coaches should complete a Performance Improvement Declaration if their athlete s heat time/distance does not reflect their current ability level. 26 TRANS-TASMAN TOURNAMENT 2016
