This is one of the new initiatives of the Committee in As this is the launch of Piranha Press, we have included information about the origins of our Club, the Committee and our sponsors. One of the aims of the Club is to support the development in the skills of our players and coaches, so Piranha Press will include regular features on coaching resources, development programs and tips. We encourage you to give us feedback on the sorts of things that you would like to read about in Piranhas Press and ways in which we can support you or improve your basketball experience with Piranhas. Our Club is completely run by volunteers and we are incredibly fortunate to have the depth of coaching talent that we have and people who are so willing to put their hand up to be team managers and to help with the running of the Club. Our main event of the year is Presentation Day which is likely to be held on Sunday 9 September Please mark this date in your diaries from now. If you are able to help on the day or with fundraising please let us know we are always on the lookout for sponsorship or promotional opportunities that can help us raise much needed funds to enable us to do more for our members. And, of course, we are heavily dependent on payment of subscription fees to run the Club so prompt payment is greatly appreciated. We are now part way through the Winter Season. We have 34 teams entered in the Waverley Domestic Competition (boys and girls) and our Senior Men s team entered in the Melbourne Metropolitan Basketball League. You may be interested to know that there are quite a few mums and dads that play basketball too. Although the Summer Season does not start till Term 4, if you know of any children that would like to play basketball for Piranhas put them in touch with me or talk to any member of our Committee and we can get them started in a training program before the season starts. Basketball is very complementary to other ball sports such as netball and football so if you do have an interest in another sport, playing basketball can benefi t you in many ways and vice versa. The beauty of basketball is that it is a fast moving, indoor sport where all players get involved and at domestic level, it does not have the same time commitment that a lot of other sports require. I look forward to seeing you all on Presentation Day or most likely at Waverley my second home! Rita Harris

2 ABOUT THE CLUB The Caulfi eld Malvern Basketball Club Inc. was formed in 1999 to develop basketball and to provide teams for boys and girls of all experience levels in all age groups. Whilst the club predominantly draws the majority of its membership from North Caulfi eld, Malvern and Glen Iris, the club also supports the Melbourne Sudanese youth community. CLUB SUBSCRITIONS The Membership Subscription fi nances payment of team entry fees, insurance, rental of training courts, purchase of equipment, functions and administration costs. It is imperative to the ongoing success of the club that all subscriptions for the new season or overdue subscriptions from previous seasons are paid in full when they are due. 3 COACHING RESOURCES Basketball Victoria, in-conjunction with the Waveley Basketball Association often run Level One Nationally Accredited Basketball Coaching Clinics. These clinics are designed to increase your coaching knowledge and existing skills to run effective and fun training sessions for your team, including correct skill training and effective team drills. The cost of the clinic includes Level 1 Coaching Manuals Basketball Coaching Made Easy, all lecture fees and NCAS Accreditation fees on completion. The clinic usually runs over four Sundays. Basketball Victoria also regularly hosts a number of Coaching Clinics throughout each year at various venues Presenters of Basketball Victoria clinics include current Australian Boomers Coach Brett Brown, former Australian Coaches Brian Goorjian and Tom Maher and Olympians and Australian Basketball icons Lindsay Gaze and Michele Timms. Clinics have also featured coaches from the US College System and Europe. Every coaching clinic is different and aims to provide something new for every level of coach, from primary school and domestic coaches, right through to our national level senior and junior coaches. We will keep you informed of upcoming clinic dates. COACHeS CORNER COACH MENTORING If you are new to coaching and excited by your role, but feeling slightly daunted by taking your team to the court for the fi rst few games, Piranhas would like to assist by offering you an experienced coach as an assistant to help you settle into your new position. If you would like to take advantage of an assistant coach, please contact Jim Crane by crane_jim@hotmail.com or Pat Doherty by patrickcgdoherty@bigpond.com COACHING CLINICS Piranhas are excited to offer several one hour coaching clinics to be held throughout the season. The clinics are open to anyone (coaches or players) wishing to learn from some of our more experienced coaches to assist in running team training drills, skills and game day tips. The clinics will be run based on age appropriate team divisions to ensure you get the most out of the clinic. If anyone is interested in attending these clinics, please Rita Harris. 4 PLAY OF THE DAY Cutters - Against Man to Man Defense 1. Player 1 can pass to either wing, Player 2 or 3. If the player is on the block on the ball side, he will cut to the opposite block to clear out the ball side. In this case, Player 4 goes to the opposite block for Player 1 to make a basket cut. It will also create an opportunity for Player 2 to dribble drive, if he/she sees an advantage. 2. Player 1 fakes towards the opposite wing, then brushes his man off Player 5 as he cuts to the basket. 3. When Player 1 reaches the block area, Player 5 fl ashes to the high post. Player 2 can pass to either Player 1 or Player 5. If Player 5 gets the ball in the high post, he can also dump the ball down to Player 1. If Player 1 can get the defensive player on his outside hip, he can get an easy score. 4. If player 1 is not open, he/she cuts to the opposite wing, and Player 5 replaces him on the low block. Player 3 cuts to the top of the key. Player 4 cuts to the free throw line. 5. If Player 5 & Player 4 are not open, Player 2 returns the ball to the top of the key. They are back in the original set, and Player 3 can start the offense again by passing to either Player 2 or Player 1. If the ball is passed back to Player 2. Player 5 will have to cut to the opposite block again. If the ball is passed to Player 1, Player 5 stays on the left block.

5 Role of the TEAM MANAGER The role of the Team Manager does not need to be difficult or over-complicated. However, It does require some communication and organisational skills, as the team manager is the direct liasion between the coach, players and parents. Team List: Compile a list of players names, addresses, phone numbers and date of birth for distribution to all players and the coach. It is a good idea to set up a group list, so that communication can commence prior to the start of the season. Confi rmation of training times and venues should be one of the fi rst pre-season s. Competition: Before the game, team managers need to visit the Waverley Basketball website to obtain the latest game details, including last minute fi xture changes, and inform all team members on how to access the current game fi xtures on-line. Special care should be taken if the game is to be held at the alternative Wattle Park venue. Check and notify all players if there will be a colour clash (usually only when playing against other Piranha teams). All current players should own a spare training top. These tops can be worn game day when colour clashes occur. If extra alternate tops are required, please organise this through Rita Harris in advance of your game. Provide a roster for scoring. All parents should take turns to score, using the touch screen scoring system. Collection of scoresheet payments: The team manager is responsible for paying the game fees (make sure this is done by checking the electronic scoreboard otherwise the game can t start). Ensure that all the players are entered on the electronic scoreboard including date of birth for new players. Ideally, the team manager should work out the game fees for the season and collect suffi cient money from parents so that the fees can be paid up front. This avoids having to pay the game fees each week at the door. Keep the receipt handy as proof of payment in case there is a dispute. Generally, a little extra is collected to allow for the end of season get together or for a gift for the coach. Supporting your coach: It is also important for the team manager to support the coach by raising any problems with parents or players within the team. TEAM TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE

The presentation day has been established as a way of rewarding all payers, coaches, team manangers, volunteers and families for their continued efforts over the past season, and the on-going contribution they make to the club. The club committee encourages the expansion of community spirit by supporting, promoting and encouraging a vibrant and fun sporting envirnoment. We were fortunate last year to have as our guest speaker, Sedale Threatt Jnr, The Unguardable Guard, who demonstrated, through some of his young players, some of their excellent ball handling skils that every player can obtain through personal development. As per previous presentation days, the day will be fi lled with food and drinks, fun games, prizes and raffl es. To make this day enjoyable for all, we are looking for donations of prizes that can be raffl ed on the day. Teams may like to pool resources and donate one prize, or families may wish to donate on an individual basis.
