7 Women s College Basketball Rider Women Picked 4th NEW YORK, NY--The Rider University women s basketball team was picked to finish fourth of 10 teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, it was announced at the annual MAAC Media Day, held at the ESPN Zone in Times Square. It shows a sign of respect for our players, said head coach Lynn Milligan. This is another example that our hard work is being recognized around the league. It is our job now to take that respect and continue to work hard to live up to those expectations. Our team goals remain the same, regardless of the number next to our name. Defending champion Marist was a unanimous pick to repeat as the women s champion, followed by Iona and Canisius. Saint Peter s was picked fifth, followed by Fairfield, Loyola, Siena, Manhattan and Niagara. What people think of the team is a source of pride for us, Milligan added. That is why I brought senior Amanda Sepulveda (Perth Amboy/Hun) to the luncheon. I wanted her to experience the joy of the day and how far they have come as players and how far we ve come as a team. It is special for Amanda to have experienced the day. This is Rider s highest preseason selection in its 13 seasons in the MAAC. Rider signs three for the Class of 2014 LAWRENCEVILLE Three high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to further their education and athletic careers at Rider University, Bronc head coach Lynn Milligan announced November 24. Joining the Rider squad next season as members of the Class of 2014 will be MyNeshia McKenzie, Rosalie Gentry and Senada Mehmedovic. We are very excited about this class, said Milligan, in her third season at Rider. They are true student-athletes who will represent Rider University and our program in a very positive way. They all come from successful high school and AAU programs. They are terrific young ladies who embody what our program stands for. McKenzie is a 6-0 guard/forward from Springfield, Pennsylvania, who is currently a senior at Springfield High School. As a junior, McKenzie was an All-Central League First Team honoree and News of Delaware County All-Star and earned team MVP honors. McKenzie is also a three-year letterwinner in volleyball. MyNeshia is an explosive and versatile player that will fit our philosophy immediately, Milligan said. She is hard working and strong enough to play inside and out. She will be relentless around the ball and can burn our opponents in a number of different ways. Gentry is a 6-0 forward from Downingtown, Pennsylvania who is currently a senior at Downingtown East High School. After transferring to Downingtown East, Gentry helped her team to back to back District 1 AAAA championships and earned All- Area Second Team and All Ches-Mont First Team honors, averaging 12 points per game. Rosalie is a terrific shooting post player, Milligan said. She can hit from long range and cause significant matchup problems. She will be able to stretch defenses and open up our inside game. Mehmedovic is a 5-7 point guard from Carlisle, Pennsylvania where she has already eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau at Carlisle High School. Mehmedovic will graduate as a four-year letterwinner and averaged 19 points per game as a junior, earning First Team All-Conference and team MVP honors for the second time. Mehmedovic is also a four-year letterwinner in field hockey. Senada is a combo guard that can score and run the point, said Milligan. Her ball handling skills and poise will allow her to run the offense as a point guard and her scoring mentality will allow her to play off the ball as well. She has great range and can get to the basket in the open floor.

15 Rider Team Manager Takes Water Skiing to the Extreme When an athlete says they can walk on water, you usually roll you eyes and kind of dismiss the claim. Except in the case of Rider women s basketball manager, Jamie Spampinato, she literally spends her summers walking on water, and standing on it and jumping over it. Each summer for the past 15 years, the junior Math Education major has been defying gravity (and the properties of walking on water itself) as a member of the Lake Mohawk Ski Hawks in Sparta, New Jersey, the official competitive water ski team in the state. Approximately 30 minutes from New York City and developed in the late 1920 s as a summer resort, Lake Mohawk now is home to approximately 7,000 permanent residents. I started at six or seven years old, Spampinato said. I just went down to the lake one day and my family and I were watching the ski team and I said I want to do that. The water ski team that Spampinato is speaking of has existed for over 45 years and puts on shows during the summer in addition to participating in regional competitions. It is sport and competition, Spampinato said. We ski every day in the summer but when it comes down to it, we are there to compete. The competitions include 13 acts where the team does routines both on and off the water and is ranked against other teams from around the country. The team does jumps off a ramp and in 2005, built an on the water pyramid that was large enough to require being pulled by two boats. The pyramid had four levels, Spampinato remembered. Then we put two groups of three on top of that. Combined we put 24 water skiers in the routine. Spampinato attended Sparta High School and in addition to basketball, was on the golf team. I played basketball and I golfed in high school, said Spampinato. I pretty much have played all of the other sports but water skiing is the one I enjoy the most. In her second season as one of the managers of the basketball team, Spampinato eventually wants to be a middle school math teacher and yes, keep skiing as well. I chose Rider because it was a small school, close to home and I could continue with the ski team, said Spampinato. One of the things that Spampinato loves about the ski team is the family atmosphere. Her mom Sue Galvin is also involved and works behind the scenes to make sure all of the equipment is ready for each event. It is a big family orientated team, Spampinato said. There aren t many things that moms and daughters and fathers and sons can do together each weekend. That is as special as the actual performances, spending time with my mom and my teammates. And her biggest moment of the last 15 years? The final pyramid at the 2005 regional competition, we won highest scoring for that, said Spampinato who has also suffered three concussions doing the sport she loves. It was a big moment. So the next time you hear an athlete boast that they can walk on water, give it a second look because this one does. -RU-
