3 Meet the Head Coach Head Coach Kara Williamson Kara Williamson begins her first season as the head women's basketball coach at Rhode Island College. I am honored to have been selected as the head women s basketball coach at Rhode Island College, Williamson said. I am proud to have the opportunity to represent this institution and athletic department. I am extremely excited to lead such a motivated group of student-athletes. I am looking forward to the start of the school year and working hard to build on the recent successes of the women's basketball program on and off the court. Williamson spent the past three seasons ( ) as an assistant coach at Southern New Hampshire University. In , SNHU won its most games (19) since as the Penmen went SNHU reached the Northeast-10 quarterfinals in each of the past two seasons and the Penmen had a total of five NE-10 All-Conference selections. Williamson arrived at SNHU after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons at American International College in Springfield, Mass., a member of the Northeast-10 along with SNHU. While there, she helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a two-year record of In , AIC posted a record, reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament and also reached the Northeast-10 semifinals. SNHU Head Coach Karen Pinkos said, Kara has helped build our program to where it is today. The success we had last season was directly impacted by Kara s hard work and dedication. She is a relentless worker and spent a great amount of time with player development. Rhode Island College is lucky to get such a great quality person in a coach. There is no doubt in my mind Kara will become a successful head coach and her players will love playing for her. She is very passionate about the game and has a gift for helping young student-athletes. Williamson spent the and seasons as an assistant coach at Western New England University in Springfield. Over her two seasons on the WNEU staff, the Golden Bears posted a combined record, including a 21-7 mark and a semifinal appearance in the ECAC Division III New England Championship in The 21 victories established a school record. Before entering the coaching ranks, Williamson was a four-year member of the women's basketball team at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. A Dean's List student at Assumption, Williamson received the Most Improved Player award as a freshman and the Unsung Hero award as a senior for the Greyhounds. She earned her bachelor's degree in management from Assumption in 2005 and completed her master's in sport management at Springfield College in A Ludlow (Mass.) High School graduate, Williamson was the Most Valuable Player and a team captain as a senior at LHS. She was a First Team All-Western Mass. selection and was also selected to the All-Massachusetts Scholastic Team. She was inducted into the Ludlow High School Sports Hall of Fame in

4 Meet the Assistant Coaches Associate Head Coach Claudia DeFaria Claudia DeFaria enters her fifth season as the associate head coach at Rhode Island College. She assists with all phases of the RIC women s basketball program especially scouting, post player development and alumni relations. While on the Community College of Rhode Island staff, DeFaria helped lead the Lady Knights to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament Final Four twice and the Elite Eight four times, while capturing five consecutive New England and Northeast District Championships. DeFaria is a 1996 graduate of Rhode Island College and is one of the college s all-time greatest women s basketball players. In just two years at RIC, DeFaria scored 1,048 points, which ranks her ninth all-time in career scoring. She remains the only RIC player to ever score 1,000 points in just two seasons. She is also fifth all-time with 592 career rebounds. She was inducted into RIC s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002, named to the college s 75th Anniversary Women s Basketball Team in 2005 and was named to the Little East Conference Women's Basketball 25th Anniversary Team in She is currently a member of the Rhode Island College Hall of Fame selection committee. As a senior in , DeFaria was named the Little East Conference s Player of the Year, First Team All-LEC and to the All-LEC Tournament team. DeFaria led the LEC in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.2 ppg and 11.8 rpg, a double-double for the entire season. She was named a New England Women s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Second Team All-Star and was named a Distinguished Student-Athlete by the Rhode Island Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW). Prior to coming to RIC, DeFaria starred at the Community College of Rhode Island from At the time of her graduation, she was CCRI s all-time leader in career scoring and assists and was inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in She was also honored as the CCRI alum of the year in DeFaria is a 1996 graduate of Rhode Island College, earning a bachelor s degree in justice studies. She is a 1993 graduate of CCRI, earning an associate s degree in business with a concentration in law enforcement. She is currently a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in Fall In addition to her coaching duties, DeFaria is a supervisor with The Key Program, Inc. 4

5 Meet the Assistant Coaches Assistant Coach Cynthia Gaudet Cynthia Gaudet begins her first season as an assistant women s basketball coach. She assists Head Coach Kara Williamson in all phases of the program including, recruiting, scouting, administering practice and game coaching. I am honored to have been asked to fill the assistant coaching position under the direction of Coach Williamson, stated Gaudet. It was with great enthusiasm that I accepted this position and remain a part of the program. I look forward to being able to contribute to the development of these young players in a positive way. We are very fortunate to have Cynthia remain a part of the RIC women s basketball program as the newest member of the coaching staff, said Williamson. Cynthia s knowledge of the game, competitiveness and work ethic are going to be great assets in maintaining the positive, successful and hardworking culture of our program. Gaudet spent one season with Rhode Island College in , after spending three seasons with Div. II Franklin Pierce. Led by her stellar play, the Anchorwomen set the program record for wins in a season with 25 and earned the programs first-ever Little East Conference Regular Season Championship. Rhode Island College followed that feat with its first-ever Little East Conference Women s Basketball Tournament Championship as well, clinching its first NCAA Div. III Tournament appearance since As a senior in , Gaudet was named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while also being named First Team All-Little East and to the league s All-Defensive team. On top of that, Gaudet was named Second Team All-Northeast Region by D3Hoops.com and Second Team All-Region by the New England Women s Basketball Coaches Association (NEWBA). Gaudet received the Kevin McNamara Award, signifying her as the Women s Basketball Player of the Year (C.C./Div. III). Furthermore, the Coventry, R.I. native received a Distinguished Student-Athlete Award from the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) and was recognized by the honorable, Gordon D. Fox, Speaker of the House, and the Rhode Island House of Representatives as a distinguished scholar athlete. Gaudet played and started in all 29 games for the Anchorwomen in She led the team with 15.9 points, 4.1 assists and 3.3 steals per game on the year, while also posting 3.5 rebounds per game. She led the conference in steals and ranked in the top five in points, assists, free throw percentage and three-point shooting. She notched a careerhigh 27 points at Emmanuel on Dec. 1 that included a 14-for-14 performance from the free throw line, which is tied for fourth all-time in program history for free throws made in a single game. Gaudet posted double-digits in scoring 27 times on the season, while her 119 assists on the year is tied for seventh all-time in single-season program history. While at Franklin Pierce, Gaudet was named Third Team All-Northeast 10 following her junior season, as well as ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I First Team. She was also twice named to the Northeast 10 Women s Basketball All-Academic Team during her tenure with the Ravens. In her three seasons at Franklin Pierce, spanning from 2007 to 2010, her Ravens reached the NCAA Div. II National Championship, the NCAA Div. II Final Four, and the NCAA Div. II Elite Eight. She averaged 6.7 points, 2.6 assists, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals over the course of those three seasons. In her four years of collegiate basketball, Gaudet played in 130 games, starting 71 of them. She compiled 1,141 points, 386 assists, 293 rebounds, and 213 steals, while knocking down 100 career three-pointers. Gaudet averaged 8.8 points, 3.0 assists, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game for her career. Gaudet received a bachelor s degree in both biology and mathematics from Rhode Island College in 2012 and is currently pursuing her master s degree in biology. 5
