3 Meet the Coaches Head Coach Mike Kelley Mike Kelley begins his fifth s eas on as the Head Women s Basketball Coach at Rhode Island College. In four seasons, he has compiled a career record of Kelley is a legendary high school coach in Rhode Island. He was the varsity Head Girls Basketball Coach at North Kingstown High School from He led the team to a recor d in three years, with the team qualifying for the state playoffs in each of those seasons. NKHS was the Division Champions and a Division I State Finalist in The team was a Division I State Quarter-Finalist in 1996 and Prior to coaching at North Kingstown, Kelley was the varsity Head Girls Basketball Coach at West Warwick High School from 1983 until He compiled a record and captured the Class A State Championship in 1991 and WWHS was the Division Champion under his guidance in 1988, 1989, 1991 and Kelley holds a bachelor of arts degree in education/math from Providence College which he received in He is currently a teacher at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick. Kelley resides in West Warwick with his wife Judith. They have three children: Kristen, Melissa and Courtney. Assistant Coach Carl Sabo Carl Sabo begins his first season as the Assistant Women s Basketball Coach at Rhode Island College. Sabo will assist Head Coach Mike Kelley with all phases of the RIC women s basketball program. Sabo s coaching career has spanned four decades, having been a coach for over 25 years. He w as form erly the Head Boys Varsity Bas ketball Coach at Ursu line Acad emy in Springfield, Illinois from He was the Girls Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach at Springfield (IL) High School from under Dave Urish. Carl is one of the top assistants I have had the pleasure of working with, Urish says. He is all of the things a head coach wants in their assistants. He is knowledgeable, dedicated, loyal, caring, and passionate about the game. He was the principal of St. Mary s Elementary School in New Berlin (IL) from He was the Director of College Advancement at Springfield College (IL) prior to taking the principal s position at Ursuline Academy in July of He earned a bachelor s degree in elementary education fr om Illinois Benedictine College in He attended Springfield College (IL) from During his career at both institutions, he played football, basketball and baseball. He amassed over 1,375 career points in his collegiate basketball career. Sabo currently lives in Whitinsville, Massachusetts with his wife Fran. They have three children and one grandchild. 19
