2 Back To National Prominence After leading the Midshipmen to three-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since the 1992, 93 and 94 seasons, 2004 National Coach of the Year Richie Meade enters his 17th season as a collegiate head coach and 13th at the Naval Academy knowing there is unfinished business. Though playing in the 2004 National Championship thrust Navy back into the national limelight, the Mids fell two goals short of claiming their first NCAA lacrosse title in 2004 and two goals shy of returning to the national semifinals in 05. The shortcomings have left a void for Meade and his Midshipmen, but they eagerly await the opportunity to battle for the 2007 National Championship set to be played May 28 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the site of Navy s last run at the national title. Meade has led the Mids to eight or more wins in six of the last-seven seasons, including each of the last three years in which Navy has record double-digit wins. It is only the second time in program history ( ) that Navy has produced doublefigure wins in three-consecutive seasons. Navy posted a school-record 15 wins in 2004 and the second-most wins in 2005 with 12. Last spring, the Midshipmen turned in an 11-4 record dropping a 9-7 contest to fourth-ranked Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. In addition, Navy owns a remarkable three-year 17-2 (.895) record in Patriot League action and has won at least a share of the regularseason title three times and has won the tournament all three years since joining the league in The Rise of Navy Lacrosse After playing in the 2004 National Championship, the hunger to make a return trip was a driving force throughout the 2005 campaign. It was that drive that helped the Mids overcome obstacles thrown their direction every step of the way, which included multiple injuries. Despite being short-handed and banged up most of the season, the Mids pro- duced a 12-4 record, claimed their second-consecutive Patriot League Tournament title and made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament as the fifth seed. The Mids produced a first-round victory over Delaware at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, but dropped a two-goal decision against sixth-ranked Virginia at Homewood Field in Baltimore in the quarterfinals. The last time Navy won back-to-back first round games was the 1987, 88 and 89 seasons in which the Mids claimed opening-round wins over Brown, Harvard and Penn, respectively. Seven of Navy s last eight games of the season were against nationally-ranked opponents and the Mids posted a 4-3 record which featured a pair of victories over arch rival Army. The Midshipmen also posted a 9-8 win over Maryland during that eight-game stretch, their first win over the Terps in Annapolis since It also marked the first time since 1980 and 81 in which Navy has won back-to-back contests against Maryland. Nine Midshipmen were named to All-Patriot League teams, while six players garnered All-America recognition. In 2006, Navy fought its way back to the NCAA Tournament for a third-consecutive year routing 14th-ranked North Carolina (11-3), defeating arch rival and nationally-ranked Army twice and picking off fourth-ranked Maryland on its home field along the way. Despite winning a share of its third-straight Patriot League regular-season crown, Navy was forced to defend its title on neutral territory when the Mids cruised past Lehigh and Army to win their third-consecutive Patriot League Tournament and earned the league s automatic bid to play in the NCAA Tournament. It was in Washington, D.C. where the Mids season was cut short by a come-from-behind win by fourth-ranked Georgetown in the NCAA quarterfinals. Eleven Midshipmen were named to All-Patriot League teams with seniors Jon Birsner and Matt Russell picking up Offensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year awards, respectively. Additionally, five players garnered All-America recognition, including Billy Looney (Second Team) and Jordan DiNola (Honorable Mention) who will carry the torch in : A Season to Remember The year 2004 will forever be etched into the Navy lacrosse annals. Most considered the Mids season a Cinderella story. But the blood, sweat and tears spoke volumes for the Navy squad that fought to play in the program s first National Championship game since Over the course of the season, several milestones were achieved, including a school-record 15 wins. In addition to recording the most wins in Academy history, Navy earned its highest ranking No. 2 for five-consecutive weeks. Its 9-6 win over Maryland was the program s first win over a top-ranked program and one-of-six Navy wins over top-10 ranked teams. 3 18,500 fans to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to witness No. 1 Johns Hopkins battle No. 2 Navy in a 10-9 overtime Blue Jay decision. Along the way, Meade helped orchestrate Navy s seventh-consecutive Star Game victory against arch rival Army. After sweeping through the Patriot League with a 7-0 record in its first season as a member of the league, Navy conquered Colgate and Hobart in the league s postseason tourney to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Hobart win came with an added bonus, marking Meade s 100th-career victory. By virtue of its Patriot League Tournament win, Navy earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, making its first appearance since The Midshipmen went on to gain the nation s support as they fought their way through the NCAA Tournament. First defeating Penn handily, 11-5, at home and then surviving a battle against seventh-seeded Cornell on the Big Red s home turf. Navy made it to the coveted national semifinals where it beat eighth-ranked Princeton, 8-7, before succumbing to Syracuse by a goal in the finale with better than 40,000 fans looking on. By year s end, seven Midshipmen garnered All-America kudos, including keeper Matt Russell who was named a First-Team All-American and the winner of the Ens. C. Markland Kelly Award as the nation s top goalkeeper. Meade was the recipient of the Morris Touchstone Memorial Award, given to the National Coach of the Year. He is just the fourth Naval Academy coach to earn the Touchstone Award. Navy Mainstay In 1995, Meade joined the Naval Academy where he was named the program s seventh head coach and now leads the Midshipmen into their 100th season as a varsity sport at the Naval Academy. It was a homecoming of sorts, as he served as an assistant coach for the Mids for five years under then-head coach Bryan Matthews from Meade has spent the past 13 years renewing the tradition of Navy lacrosse and instilling an aggressive style of play that has been the program s trademark. Since coming to the Academy, there has been at least one Midshipman who has earned All-America honors, including three-time honorees Andy Ross ( 97) and Chad Donnelly ( 00) and 2006 graduates Steve Looney and Matt Russell. Meanwhile, two-time First-Team All-America Mickey Jarboe was named the Kelly Award winner in 1999 and 2000 and Russell claimed the award in 04. In his first season at Navy, the Mids posted a 6-6 mark, as both coach and team adjusted to a new system. The Mids hoped to improve on that record in '96, but a mere four points kept Navy from celebrating a 7-5 record, and the team finished 4-8 overall. In 1997, Navy jumped out to a 4-0 record and a No. 4 national ranking, only to lose its final four games and finish at an even 6-6. In 1998, Meade s squad posted its first.500-plus season since his arrival, thanks in part to returning six of the top seven scorers from 97. The year 1999 saw the Mids return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since The Mids earned an at-large bid The Meade Family after producing a 7-7 record with impressive wins over North Carolina and Georgetown. In 2000, the Mids associated themselves with a conference the ECAC for the first time in program history. Meade s squad finished tied for first with Georgetown, however, the Hoyas posted a win over the Mids in Washington, D.C. to win the head-to-head tie breaker. In 2001 and 2002, the Mids recorded identical 8-5 records and both years they finished third in the league. The Journey to Navy A native of Williston Park, N.Y. on Long Island, Meade played at Nassau Community College before transferring to North Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976, as well as a Master of Science degree in After working in the recreation field and as an assistant coach at Duke, he was named an assistant at North Carolina in A year later, he earned his first head coaching job at the University of Baltimore, where he had a four-year record of The school dropped its athletic program in He then came to Navy for five years ( ) as an assistant lacrosse coach and Assistant Professor of Physical Education. During that period, he served as defensive coordinator for the lacrosse program. From , he was an assistant at North Carolina, serving as offensive coordinator and attack and midfield coach. Meade moved on to Army in 1991 as offensive coordinator and attack position coach. Meade serves as President of the Intercollegiate Men s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA). He is the Director of the Navy Lacrosse Camp and is a tenured full professor in the Naval Academy Physical Education Department. In the fall of 06, he was invited by the Brigade of Midshipmen to speak at the Corbin Leadership Conference. He was the head coach for the South Team in the '95 North-South Lacrosse All-Star Game. Meade and his wife, Sue, were married in the fall of 1998 and have three daughters, Jillian, Shannon Grace and Cassidy. 29

5 Navy lacrosse camps. Tillman was previously commissioned into the U.S. Navy as a fleet support officer and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. He is currently a member of the Physical Education Department at the Academy. Coaching Career Navy's offense has flourished over the last several seasons and one of the biggest reasons is 12th-year Navy assistant coach John Tillman. Now in his sixth season as the Mids' head assistant coach, Tillman's focus is on Navy's entire offensive game plan. Last spring, Navy produced two of the top scorers in the country, while All-American and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Jon Birsner was perhaps the best feeder in the game. Birsner averaged better than 3.6 points per contest, including 2.4 assists per game which ranked third in the country. As a team, the Mids were ranked No. 29 in scoring offense, firing in 9.07 goals per game. Navy hit the double-digit goal mark in five contests, including 11 against 14th-ranked North Carolina. In 2005, the Mids outscored their opponents, , with more than 70 goals scored by Navy's corps of All-Americans, including firstteamer Graham Gill who produced 19. Navy concluded the season owning a scoring margin which was ranked sixth nationally. The Mids finished the 2004 campaign ranked No. 3 nationally in scoring and topped the country in scoring margin, outscoring their foes by 5.22 per game. Navy also set the school record for most goals in a season with 221. In 2004, Tillman began orchestrating the Mids' extra-man offense and it has been one of Navy's biggest areas of improvement. A year prior, Navy scored only five man-up goals, putting the ball in the net on just 14.3 percent of its opportunitites. In Navy's 2004 opener at Lafayette, the Mids produced five extra-man goals against the Leopards. By year's end, Navy produced 23 extra-man goals and finished ninth in the country in extra-man efficiency, winning 40.4 percent of the EMOs. In 2005, Navy scored 21 extra-man goals, the seventh most in the country. Additionally, its 37.5 winning percent on EMOs was the 13th best in the nation. The Mids picked up right where they left off, as they recorded 19 man-up goals last spring and ranked 15th in the country, producing a goal on 33.9 percent of their chances. Under his tutelage, Tillman has helped develop several All-Americans, including 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy finalist Ian Dingman, Joe Bossi ('04), who nearly tripled his point production in his senior campaign, Greg Conklin ('03) and Adam Borcz ('01). In 2005, Navy's entire starting midfield garnered All- America recognition, including brothers Billy and Steve Looney, who were named to the third team. In addition to his game day duties, Tillman also serves as Navy's recruiting and scouting coordinator, and is the assistant director of the Playing Career A 1991 graduate of Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, Tillman was a member of the school's Dean's list. He had the opportunity to play for legendary coach Richie Moran and was a member of the 1989 squad that earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. An overachieving and unselfish player, Tillman began his playing career as a goalie, but by the end of his college days, had played every position except attack for the Big Red. The experience provided Tillman with a better understanding of every position on the field and extensive knowledge of the game. A native of Corning, N.Y., Tillman played professionally for three years for the Baltimore Thunder of the National Lacrosse League and one year for the Washington Power. While the 1997 Thunder squad won just two games, the next two years Baltimore reached the NLL Championship and Semifinals. During that time, Tillman established himself as a team leader, playing in 38-of-39 contests and was one of the league leaders in loose balls. Tillman played for the Toyota Lacrosse Club, who won five-consecutive Southern Division Championships and made four appearances in the finals, including a world championship in Coaching Roots Following graduation, Tillman spent four years as an assistant coach at Ithaca College, working with former Navy standout Jeff Long. During that time, the program experienced strong growth and success, including EAA and ECAC Championships and an appearance in the 1992 Division III National Semifinals. During his five-year stay in Ithaca, Tillman also pursued his Master of Science degree as a graduate student at Ithaca. 31

6 Coaching Career Former Maryland All-American Ryan Moran is the newest member of Navy s coaching staff. Moran, who spent the campaign coaching at the Naval Academy Prep School in Rhode Island, joined the Mids coaching staff in January of 06. Moran is responsible for Navy s face-off specialists, as well as the defensive midfield. Moran stepped into the role of face-off coach without a hitch, as he helped William Wallace mature into an All-Patriot League selection and one of the premiere face-off specialists in the country. Wallace finished the 06 campaign ranked 14th in the nation, winning 57.3 percent of his draws. Wallace enters his senior season ranked third on the Mids all-time face-off wins list with 209. In addition to success within the face-off corps, Moran also helped develop newcomer Geoff Leone into a fine young defensive midfielder. Leone shared time with 2006 graduate Ward Hackett who closed out his career by earning All-Patriot League recognition. Playing Career A 2003 graduate of Maryland, Moran served several roles for the Terrapins during his four-year career. During his freshman and sophmore seasons, he was a short stick defensive midfielder who contributed in the face-off game by playing on the wing, or taking the draws if needed. As a junior and senior, Moran's focus turned to the offense where he played the majority of the time at the midfield, but also played attack. In those two seasons he scored a combined 39 goals, and added 11 assists, this after not scoring a goal in either of his first two years. He also won 50 percent (38-76) of the face-offs he took during his senior campaign. A First-Team All-ACC selection and member of the ACC All- Tournament Team his senior season, Moran led the Terps to a 12-4 record in 2004 and an appearance in the Final Four. He sealed Maryland s win over Ohio State (8-5) in its NCAA first-round game by dumping in an empty net goal with under a minute to play. In the Terps NCAA quarterfinal win, he scored the game winner over Massachusetts. By year s end, Moran was only player on Maryland s roster responsible for producing either a goal or an assist in every game except the Terrapins NCAA semifinal contest against Virginia. For his efforts, Moran was named a USILA Third-Team All-American in Moran was drafted by the Baltimore Bayhawks in the third round of the 2003 Major League Lacrosse College Draft where he was the 18th overall pick. He saw action in eight of the Bayhawks games as a rookie, and was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage an the end of the season. While in Philadelphia, he played in every game, drawing four starts and helped lead the Barrage to the lacrosse championship. He produced five goals and added five assists and owned a.510 face-off winning percentage. Moran was traded to the Long Island Lizards in 2005 where he scored 10 goals and added six helpers. Additionally, he won.510 of his face-offs in the 14 games in which he played. The Lizards went on to play in the championship game, but were tripped up by the Bayhawks. Moran led NAPS to a 10-1 record in which featured wins over Army s JV team, as well as Army s prep school. Personal A native of Massapequa, N.Y., Moran is a 1999 graduate of Chaminade High School on Long Island. A standout lacrosse and football player, Moran earned All- America and all-league lacrosse honors his senior year and played in the North- South Game upon graduation. Additionally, he was an all-league safety on the football team his junior and senior campaigns. Coaching has been in the Moran family bloodline for years. Ryan s father, Jack, has been a successful lacrosse and football coach for the past two decades at Chaminade High School on Long Island. Ryan s great uncle, Richie, was a standout lacrosse player at Maryland ( ) before becoming one of the most successful lacrosse coaches in the country. He led Cornell to three national titles and is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Ryan Moran was a member of the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse. 7 Coaching Career Ray Finnegan is no stranger to the Navy lacrosse program. A 1975 Naval Academy graduate who experienced a celebrated lacrosse career, is in his 17th year as an assistant coach working with Navy s corps of goalkeepers. Finnegan also served as an assistant for five years ( ) under former Navy coach Bryan Matthews. Under his guidance, Finnegan has manufactured multiple standout goalkeepers at the Academy. Kevin Farrington garnered Second-Team All-America recognition in 1992, while Finnegan helped groom Mickey Jarboe into the best goalkeeper in America in 1999 and Ironically, en route to becoming Navy s all-time saves leader, Jarboe erased his mentor from the top-10 saves list at the Academy. Jon Higdon ( 02) turned in the nation s second-best goals-against average during his junior campaign and garnered All-America kudos following his senior campaign. The most recent beneficiary of Finnegan s golden touch is Matt Russell who emerged as a First-Team All-American in 2004 after starting the season as a backup. Russell, who was the recipient of the 04 Kelly Award, finished his sophomore season ranked No. 2 in the nation in GAA, giving up 6.69 per contest. He also helped the Mids to a No. 2 national ranking in scoring defense. The epitome of a Navy keeper, Russell played over a quarter with a broken collarbone against Syracuse in the National Championship. In 2005, Russell garnered Second- Team All-America accolades, spearheading the top-ranked defensive unit in the country. Last spring Russell wrapped up his collegiate career by anchoring the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation and picking up his third-consecutive All-America honor. He was the No. 1-ranked keeper in the country, giving up just 5.45 goals per game and setting an NCAA single-season GAA mark. Additionally, he stands as the NCAA s record holder in career GAA, posting a three-year 6.28 GAA. Playing Career While at Navy, Finnegan earned Second-Team All-America recognition in 1974 as the Mids goalkeeper. His 152 saves during that season rank as the 18th-most saves in a single season at Navy. He started in the '74 North-South Game and the College/Club All-Star Classic. Finnegan was a two-time winner of the Stuart Oxnard Memorial Lacrosse Cup, awarded to the player who contributed most to the success of the lacrosse team. Finnegan s 274-career saves rank 11th on Navy s all-time saves leader board. Professional Career After graduation, Finnegan served as a Navy pilot, earning his wings in 1977, and completed two cruises, one on the USS America and one on the USS Independence. Finnegan is currently a pilot for US Airways and is based out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Personal Finnegan and his wife, Grace, were married in the fall of Finnegan is the father of twins, Kathleen and Colin. Kathleen is a 2006 graduate of American University where she was a standout goalkeeper for the Eagles. She garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition in 2004 en route to leading American to the Patriot League Regular-Season and Tournament Championship, as well as an NCAA Tournament bid. Colin is a senior at the Naval Academy and is the projected starting goalkeeper for the Midshipmen this spring. 33

8 Playing Career Goers came to the Naval Academy after a three-year stint at Ohio State, where he oversaw the Buckeyes offense and face-off strategy. A 1995 graduate of Towson, Goers is regarded as one of the premier players in Tiger history. A 1994 Third-Team All-America, he held Towson records in face-offs won in a game (21 vs. Villanova in 94), ground balls in a season (127 in 94) and ground balls in a career (274, ) until 2004 when Justin Berry edged out Goers in those categories. Meanwhile, his 78.8 face-off winning percentage is the best single-season winning percentage in NCAA history. Coaching Career Entering his sixth season at the Naval Academy is Mark Goers who is in his second year serving as Navy s Director of Lacrosse Operations. In this newly-created position, Goers spearheads the Mids travel, facilities scheduling, camps and clinics, as well as other administrative duties including budget, compliance issues and film. In addition, Goers is a member of the Physical Education Department at the Academy. As an assistant coach from , Goers molded the Mids into one of the most successful face-off squads in the country. In 2004, Chris Pieczonka was ranked No. 2 nationally in face-offs, winning 67.6 percent (173 of 256) of his draws and led Navy as a team to a tie for No. 2 in the national rankings, winning 65.5 percent (268 of 409). By virtue of his ability to face off, Pieczonka was ranked 10th nationally in ground balls, scooping up 5.81 per contest. Another player Goers is credited in refining is two-time All-American Steve Looney. The middle of three lacrosse playing Looney brothers, Steve was the workhorse of Navy lacrosse during his four-year career. A multi-faceted player, he saw time as a face-off specialist, a wing player on face-offs, a defensive midfielder and an offensive midfielder. Looney, the 2004 Patriot League Tournament MVP, surfaced with the ball in 2004 and 05 in nearly every ground ball opportunity. Coaching Roots Upon graduation, he began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant at his alma mater where he helped lead the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the 96 NCAA Tournament. In 1998, he returned home and assisted his former high school coach Earl Brewer at Langely High School in his home state Virginia, and helped to direct the prep team to the state regional finals. Just a year later, he joined the Ohio State program that was beginning to flourish. In 2000, Goers helped develop face-off specialist Anthony Kelly to a.540 percentage the nation s 27th-best mark. The Fairfax, Va., native has competed for the Columbus Landsharks of the NLL and was an all-club team member for Team Toyota. Personal Goers comes from an athletic family. His mother, a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, holds multiple indoor track records, his father played basketball at Wittenberg and his brother, Matt, played lacrosse at Ohio State and was the team captain his senior campaign. Mark and his wife, the former Jessica Anna Christina duhoffmann, were married Dec. 7, 2001, and reside in Kent Island with their son, William, born May 28, The couple is expecting a second child this spring.
