The Navy-VMI tilt is one of four games slated for Saturday in what is the earliest opening game in NCAA men s lacrosse history... also kicking off their seasons are Robert Morris at North Carolina (12:00 pm), Detroit Mercy at Ohio State (12:00 pm) and Saint Joseph s at Delaware (1:00 pm). The game will be broadcast over the radio waves by WNAV (1430 AM, Annapolis; wnav.com) with Pete Medhurst handling the call, beginning with the Navy lacrosse pregame show at 11:45 am. In addition, the game will be audio-streamed online with live stats at NavySports.com. Navy Notebook Opening the chapter on his 19th season as a collegiate head coach and his 15th season at Navy is Richie Meade who is ranked 36th all-time in wins (147-98), while he stands 12th among the nation s active coaches. Meade is just three wins away from joining the 150-win club. Meanwhile, Meade welcomes back six starters and 30 letterwinners off last year s squad that turned in a 10-6 record, including a 5-1 Patriot League mark that gave the Mids a share of their fifth consecutive Patriot League regular-season title. After winning its 10th game of the season in dramatic fashion over North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament, Navy has now reached double digit wins in each of the last five seasons, a school record. Having earned its way into the NCAA Tournament in each of the last five years, the Mids will look to stretch it to a sixth this spring. The last time the Mids earned five consecutive NCAA Tournament berths was in the 70s when Navy played in each of the first 12 NCAA Tournaments ( ). Though Navy will be without the services of 2008 All- Americans Jordan DiNola on defense and Nick Mirabito on offense, it will have the luxury of bringing back its top goal producer in Tim Paul, as well as its entire midfield line... Paul paced the offense with 26 goals, while adding five assists for 31 points. Five of the nine players who garnered All-Patriot League recognition return to the lineup, including senior defensive midfielder Geoff Leone, who picked up Preseason First-Team All-America kudos by Inside Lacrosse...also returning are first-team member Patrick Moran at midfield, along with Tim Paul on attack, Basil Daratsos (2x) at midfield and long stick defensive midfielder Jaren Woeppel who were named to the second team. All eyes will likely be on the Mids defensive unit which has traditionally been one of the best in the country, but lost two all-league starters in Jordan DiNola and Brendan Teague. Team captain Andy Tormey will anchor the lineup in his second season as a starter and will be joined by senior Thomas Zimmerman and long stickturned close defenseman Jake Brosnan LACROSSE VMI Keydets Record 0-0, 0-0 MAAC 2008 Record 6-10, 4-4 MAAC Streak Lost 1, dating back to 08 Last Game lost to Canisius, 14-5 in MAAC Championship Next Game at Army (12:00 pm) Ranking NA (USILA Coaches); NA (IL / FO Magazine) Head Coach Jeff Shirk (Maryland 01) Career Record 8-22 (Third year) VMI Record 8-22 (Third year) Sports Information Contact Brad Salois Phone saloisbj@vmi.edu Web Site Storylines 10 Navy was won 10 or more games in each of the last five seasons, a school record. 9 The Mids have lost just nine games (29-9) at Navy- Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since the start of the 2004 season. 8 Eight different players accounted for the Mids 10 goals in last year s 10-2 win over VMI in the inaugural meeting between the two programs. 7 The Midshipmen have won seven consecutive season openers, outscoring their foes ( ) during that streak. 6 Six of Navy s 16 games a year ago were decided by one goal (4-2). 5 Junior midfielder Patrick Moran paced Navy with five extra-man goals a year ago. 4 Navy has four Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on its roster Geoff Leone (1st), Andy Tormey (2nd), Tim Paul (HM) and Jaren Woeppel (HM). 3 Navy head coach Richie Meade needs three wins to reach 150 wins over what is his 19th season as a collegiate head coach. 2 Junior Tim Paul has scored two or more goals in 15 of the 31 games during his career, including in 10 of the 16 contests last spring. 1 Since the start of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost just one game (42-1) when holding its opponents to six or fewer goals. Saturday s Opponent - VMI Former Maryland standout Jeff Shirk (8-22) begins his third season at the helm of the Keydet program after leading VMI to a 6-10 record a year ago. Shirk is more than familiar with the Navy lacrosse program. Not only did he play against the Mids for four years while a Terp, he served as the head coach at the Naval Academy Prep School for three years ( ). Though the No. 4 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, VMI earned its way into the league s championship contest after knocking off topseeded Providence in overtime, 9-8. It was the program s first postseason conference appearance. Despite beginning their season 1-5, the Keydets continued to improve and by the middle of the season had earned wins over Marist, Wagner, Saint Joseph s and Siena. Six of VMI s 10 starters return, including junior midfielder Tim Moran who is coming off a sensational season. Moran was the team s second-leading scorer with 43 points on 25 goals and 18 assists. Meanwhile, Laurel, Md., native Brett Leonard returns for his junior campaign after turning in 21 goals and 11 assists as a member of both the midfield and attack lines. Defensively, Shirk will look to returning starter Sean McCoy to stand watch in goal. As a sophomore a year ago, McCoy surrendered 173 goals for a goalsagainst average, while making stops on 46.6 percent of the shots he faced. He posted 151 saves on the year. 2 Navy vs. VMI The Series Navy won last year s inaugural meeting with the Keydets at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Staidum in Annapolis. The Mids balanced offensive attack featured eight different players scoring Navy s 10 goals, including four first-time scorers. Tim Paul paced the Mids with a pair of goals, while 2008 All-American Nick Mirabito scored a pair of goals and assisted on another. Navy s defense forced 21 Keydet turnovers, including 13 in the first half. Meanwhile, it held VMI to just 21 shots. It was the earliest Navy has played a season-opener and the first game on tap this season in Div. I lacrosse. The Mids balanced offensive attack featured eight different players scoring Navy s 10 goals, including four first-time scorers. Navy opened up a 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play with sophomore attack Tim Paul punching in the season s first goal for the Mids at the 8:27 mark. The play was cued by first-year starting keeper Matt Coughlin whose outlet pass to mid-field field set up the goal. A few quick one-timers around and rookie attack Andy Warner saw Paul cutting to the crease and Paul popped it in over VMI keeper Sean McCoy s shoulder. Navy s next two goals were near mirror images of one another as sophomore middie Patrick Moran rippled the back of the next from 10 yards out at 7:20, followed by junior midfielder Shane Durkin s first-collegiate goal from just outside of 10 yards. VMI finally got on the board when Hill made a sensational move curling around the backside of the goal and shooting the ball as he left his feet. Horizontal to the goal, Hill somehow threaded the ball between the defender and Coughlin to narrow the margin to two (3-1) with more than 10:30 remaining in the second quarter. While Navy would go on to get just one goal in the second stanza, the marker by sophomore midfielder Joe Lennon, his first, at 5:30 would be the first of seven consecutive goals for the Midshipmen. Navy pushed its lead to 8-1 after three quarters with goals from senior Nick Mirabito, Sean Standen, Warner and Bobby Lennon. Warner, meanwhile, scored his first collegiate goal when senior midfielder Terence Higgins intercepted a pass at mid-field and got it to Mirabito who then fed Warner. Additionally, the elder Lennon, Bobby, also scored his first collegiate goal, as senior attack Matt Guido sent him the ball with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter. Paul scored his second goal off Mirabito s second assist at 9:19, while Standen turned in his second collegiate multi-goal game when he punched in his second with 7:43 remaining in the game to give Navy a 10-1 lead. The Keydets stopped the Navy run at 6:06 when Tim Moran fed Brett Leonard for the score with 6:06 to go in the contest. Navy s defense forced 21 Keydet turnovers, including 13 in the first half. Meanwhile, it held VMI to just 21 shots. GM1 #12 Navy 10, VMI 2 Feb. 9, 2008 Annapolis, Md. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has played 43 of its 80 games against teams ranked in the top 25, posting a record (.581)... two of the losses have come against the No. 1-ranked team in the country at the time (Johns Hopkins twice). Furthermore, since the start of the 2000 campaign, 73 of Navy s 132 games have been against ranked teams... in those games against ranked opponents, Navy is (.507). In games against unranked foes since 2000, Navy is 53-6 (.898)... the losses have come against UMBC ( 01), Air Force and Penn State ( 03), Bucknell ( 05) and Colgate ( 06 and 08). NCAA Leader Board Navy finished the 2008 campaign ranked among the top 20 in six of the seven statistical categories, win percentage. Navy s smothering defense was ranked third, giving up 6.50 goals per game, just 0.25 behind national leader Siena and.03 behind second-place Providence. Anchored by the play of draw specialist Mikelis Visgauss, the Mids finished 13th in faceoff percentage, winning 55.3 percent of their draws. Navy was tied for 14th in win percentage (.625), 15th in scoring margin (+1.88), tied for 16th in man-down defense (.743) and 17th in extra-man offense (.350). All-American attackman Nick Mirabito finished his career tied for 38th in points a year ago, averaging 2.88 per game... averaging 1.44 assists per game, he stood 26th in the national assists rankings. Mikelis Visgauss capped off his career ranked 13th in faceoff win percentage, winning 57.5 percent of the draws he took... additionally, he was tied for 12th in ground balls per game. Navy close defenseman Andy Tormey finished 37th in grounders per outing by scooping up 4.07 per contest. Balanced Scoring Last spring, 21 players scored goals for the Mids, while another five posted assists, bringing the total to 26 different players having a role in Navy s scoring. Navy was one of just four schools (Duke, Hobart, Dartmouth) to have 26 or more players produce a point. Of the 21 players who scored goals for Navy, 15 of them have found the back of the goal at least twice. Seven different players accounted for Navy s 10 gamewinners. Making Their Mark Plenty was made out of the number of new faces Navy put out on the field last season and in turn, plenty was produced by those names. Seven of Navy s top 10 scorers recorded more points in 2008 than they had (during their careers) going into the season... only Nick Mirabito and Terence Higgins, members of the Class of 2008, along with Basil Daratsos turned in more points. Three of the players (Brendan Connors, Shane Durkin and Joe Lennon) had never scored a point prior to the 2008 campaign. First-Time Goal Scorers Twenty-one different players scored goals for the Mids last spring of those 21 were first-time scorers and only three of the 12 were freshmen. Scoring their first collegiate goals in 08 were: seniors Dan Decker and Evan Boyle, juniors Michael Beggins, Shane Durkin, Bobby Lennon and Geoff Leone, sophomores Brendan Connors, Joe Lennon and Zack Schroeder and rookies Kevin Doyle, Brian Striffler and Andy Warner. Tough D Since 2000, Navy s defense has been ranked among the top four eight times and No. 1 in the country four times... after leading the country for seven consecutive weeks, Navy finished the 2008 campaign ranked No. 3 in scoring defense... the Mids surrendered 104 goals in 16 contests (6.50). The Mids held 10 of their 16 opponents to seven or fewer goals last season... Navy has won 22 in a row when achieving that feat... additionally, Navy held seven opponents scoreless in the opening period a year ago. Navy has lost just eight games when holding foes to nine or fewer goals since 2004, posting a 50-8 mark... two of the losses came in overtime during the 2005 campaign (Bucknell, Johns Hopkins), losses in 06 were to Colgate, Georgetown (twice), Johns Hopkins, while Maryland managed to nip the Mids in OT in 07, as did Cornell in 08. Navy s defense has given up double-figure goals just nine times in its last 46 games (2006-present), 11 times in the last 62 (2005-present) and 15 times (Ohio State, Army, Johns Hopkins and Syracuse in 04; Georgetown and Virginia in 05; Army 06; Colgate, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and North Carolina in 07; Georgetown, Johns Hopkins-twice and Colgate in 08) in the last 80 games (2004-present). Dating back to 2003, Navy has won 36-straight games when holding its foes to five or fewer goals. Maryland, who owned the nation s seventh-ranked scoring offense at the time of the matchup, was unable to score against the Mids defense for the first 41 minutes of the game last spring. Meanwhile, Navy held Lehigh (3/11) and Holy Cross (3/15) to a combined 36 shots last year... it held Lehigh without a shot in the first quarter of its game, while the Crusaders managed just two shots in the opening half. Since 04, Navy has held 39 of its 80 opponents to 25 or fewer shots and is 33-6 (Ohio State 2004, Colgate 2006, Maryland 2007, Army 2008, Johns Hopkins 2008-twice). Loyola Blakefield Pipeline Four Navy players are products of the Loyola Blakefield pipeline in Baltimore, Md.... seniors Bobby Lennon and Tommy Phelan, along with junior Tim Paul are members of Loyola Blakefield s Class of Paul is a year behind the other two after attending the Naval Academy Prep School prior to enrolling at the Naval Academy. Additionally, Bobby Lennon s brother, Joe, is a 2006 graduate of Loyola Blakefield and is in his second season as a starter on the Mids midfield line. All four players played a pivotal role on last year s team and figure to be in the mix again this season... Phelan started seven of the last eight games in goal for the Mids, including Navy s opening-round NCAA Tournament win against North Carolina. Paul, a 2008 Second-Team All-Patriot League selection and 09 Preseason All-American, was Navy s leading goal scorer with 26 and was second on the team in points with he was responsible for game-winning goals last spring against Maryland and Bucknell. Bobby Lennon has been a key player on Navy s talented defensive midfield line over the last several years... he has played in every game over the last two seasons and has been instrumental in the Mids No. 3 national ranking for scoring defense. After making just one game appearance as a freshman, Joe Lennon started all 16 games last spring... he finished the year with turned in 17 points on 11 goals and six assists and was the team s fifth-leading scorer. Last year, three-time All-American Jordan DiNola was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year... though Navy has fielded the nation s top-ranking scoring defense four times since joining the league, Di- Nola is the first Midshipman who has been named the league s top defensive player. Richie Meade was named the 2004 Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading the Mids to a flawless 7-0 mark in league competition... he received the award a second time after guiding Navy to a 6-0 record last spring. Tourney Talk Navy has made five consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament and 25 overall in what is its 102nd year of storied history. Navy has played in the fifth-most NCAA Tournaments behind Johns Hopkins (37), Maryland (30), Virginia (30) and Syracuse (27). The last time Navy qualified for five-consecutive NCAA Tournaments was a quarter of a century ago... the Mids earned a berth in the NCAA s first tournament in 1971 and earned 11 subsequent bids ( ). Navy is 5-5 in tournament action under head coach Richie Meade. Neutral Ground As a whole, neutral site games have been rare during the 102-year history at the Naval Academy... just 18 games have been played on neutral ground. That said, during head coach Richie Meade s tenure, 15 games have been played at a neutral site, including three (Cornell, Holy Cross, Colgate-PL Tourney) last season. Navy owns an 11-7 overall record in neutral site matches, including a 10-5 mark under Meade. Over the last five seasons Richie Meade s Midshipmen have become accustomed to playing at least one neutral site regular-season game... in 2004 Navy played Colgate in Orlando, in 2005, Navy opened the season against Providence by playing at Branford High School in Connecticut and later played Colgate in Orlando... in 2006, Navy and Bucknell battled one another in San Diego at the First 4 Invitational... in 2007, Navy faced Holy Cross in Texas... this season, the Mids dropped a heartbreaker to Cornell in overtime in Long Island on Feb. 23 before taking down Holy Cross, 16-3, at Texas Stadium on March 15 as part of the eight-team, fourgame Ford Patriot Cup... the Mids were tripped up by unranked Colgate, 9-12, in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament on April 25.
