Maryland is the third 700-win program Navy will face this year. The Mids also played Johns Hopkins (L, 6-5) and Army (L, 14-7). The 700 Club Johns Hopkins (10-3) Syracuse (10-4) Navy (4-9) Maryland (10-3) Army (9-4) Hobart* (4-9) * Hobart played at the Div. 3 Scouting the Terrapins Under the direction of fourth-year head coach John Tillman, Maryland enters Saturday s contest ranked eighth in the nation via the USILA Coaches Poll after putting together a 10-3 mark to date. The Terps losses have come against nationally-ranked foes North Carolina (11-8), Johns Hopkins (11-6) and Notre Dame (6-5) in the ACC Semifinals. Meanwhile their victories are against Mount St. Mary s (16-3), UMBC (14-3), Syracuse (16-8), Duke (10-6), Stony Brook (11-8), Villanova (12-10), Michigan (13-5), Virginia (9-6), Robert Morris (19-6) and Notre Dame (12-8). The Terps are ranked among the nation s top 10 in seven statistical categories, including three in the top 5. Maryland stands No. 3 in scoring defense, holding its opponents to just 7.00 goals per game. Villanova (W, 12-10), North Carolina (L, 11-8) and Johns Hopkins (L, 11-6) are the only teams to reach double figures against the Terps. Anchoring the defensive effort for the Terps is senior keeper Niko Amato who stands fourth nationally in goals-against average (7.27) and eighth in save percentage (57.3). Senior long pole Michael Ehrhardt has registered a team-best 24 caused turnovers and picked up 47 ground balls, while starting defenseman Casey Ikeda and Brian Cooper have 14 takeaways apiece. Meanwhile, Maryland has been held to single digits just four times this season. The Terps stand 15th in scoring offense, averaging goals per game. Six players have scored double-digit goals for Maryland this season, including senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk who leads the team in goals (28), assists (16) and points (44). Rookie attackman Matt Rambo has also topped 20 goals this season, turning in 29 points on 24 goals and 5 assists as the team s second-leading scorer. Faceoff specialist Charlie Raffa has been spot-on this spring where he has won 142 of the 212 draws he has taken this spring for a 67.0 percentage. He is ranked No. 2 nationally in winning percentage and with an 8.09 ground balls per game average, he stands 10th. Maryland is also one of the nation s best in clearing percentage, failing on just 16 of its 203 attempts. If there was an area of weakness for the Terps it would be their man-down defense which has surrendered 16 goals on 37 attempts. The Terps jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter, including a goal by midfielder Jake Bernhardt off an assist from John Haus just 43 seconds into the game. Navy not only battled its way back into the game, it took the lead after scoring five unanswered goals. After Navy s defense held Maryland in check for nearly 15 minutes, the Terps regrouped and scored on an extraman play with Haus cutting in from the left wing and Mike Chanenchuk providing the pass. Maryland tied the game when Kevin Cooper and Jay Carlson worked together to score on a transition play with 4:45 left in the half, sending the two teams into the locker room deadlocked at 5-5. Navy took the lead for a the final time when senior midfielder Bryce Dabbs dodged and fired his shot to the far post 1:31 into the third quarter. Maryland answered when Chanenchuk sent his pass to Owen Blye who was hugging the crease. That goal was the first of a five-goal run by the Terps, three to end the third quarter and the first two of the final stanza. Trailing 10-6 with 5:59 to go in the game, Navy had plenty of fight remaining as midfielder Pat Durkin stuck his lone shot of the game. The Terps answered just 49 seconds later when Chanenchuk went high to low on Navy goalie Nolan Hickey for his fourth point of the game. The Mids scored the final goal of the game at 4:21 with Hull feeding Dabbs for his second goal. April 5, 2013 Annapolis, Md. Tillman was on staff during the Mids memorable Memorial Day ride in 2004 when Navy faced Syracuse in the National Championship Game. One of Tillman s pupils at the Academy, J.L. Reppert (Class of 1999), is in his third season as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Reppert also served as an assistant on Tillman s coaching staff at Harvard in Tillman was also an assistant coach at Navy when current volunteer assistant coach Mickey Jarboe, Class of 2000, enjoyed a stellar career at the Academy as a twotime All-American and Kelly Award winner. Maryland grad and Terrapin associate head coach Ryan Moran spent three seasons ( ) as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen. Moran also served as the head coach at the Naval Academy Prep School during the 2005 campaign. Moran and third-year Navy assistant coach Ryan Wellner are both graduates of Chaminade High School. Wellner was a senior ( 96) when Moran was a freshman ( 99). Moran s father, Jack, gave Wellner his first coaching position in 2003 at Chaminade. Maryland senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk s father, Mike, was a three-time All-American for the Midshipmen from The elder Chanenchuk was a member of four NCAA semifinal teams and served as co-captain of the 1979 squad that ironically dropped a decision in the NCAA semifinals to the Terps. On the Road Again Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost 31 of its 61 road games (neutral sites not included). Navy had lost 10 straight games on the road dating back to 2012, but finally got a check in the win column on March 29 at Boston U. The Mids dropped back-toback games to Maryland and Army in 2012, were 0-5 a year ago and dropped contests at Bucknell (9-6), Towson (14-9) and Lehigh (13-2) this season before dealing the Terriers a 13-7 loss. The Mids dropped a 14-7 decision to Army on April 12 on their last road trip. Navy has had a losing record on the road in four of its last five years. The Mids were 2-4 in 2010, 1-6 in 2011, 3-2 in 2012, 0-5 in 2013 and 1-5 in Seven of Navy s 14 games this season will be played away from its home venue, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium - at Bucknell (L, 9-6), at Towson (L, 14-9), at Lehigh (L, 13-2), at Boston U. (W, 13-7), at Army (L, 14-7), at Lehigh - PL Quarterfinals (L, 10-6) and at Maryland. Navy has averaged 10.9 goals in its 7 home games this season and just 7.2 goals in its 6 road games. Meanwhile, the Mids opponents have scored 52 goals (7.4) in games played in Annapolis vs. 67 on the road (11.2). Five Mids Named All-Patriot League Navy placed five players on the 30-man 2014 All-Patriot League First and Second Teams. Junior midfielder Gabe Voumard was named to the Patriot League First Team, while senior attackman Sam Jones, senior defenseman Nik Mullen, senior long stick midfielder Pat Kiernan and freshman faceoff specialist Brady Dove received second-team honors. A first-time honoree, Voumard is Navy s top scorer out of the midfield and tied for third overall with 23 points on 15 goals and 8 assists. Seventeen of his 23 points came against Patriot League competition where he scored at least two goals against five of the eight foes. Jones, also a first-time selection, leads Navy with 41 points on 23 goals and 18 assists. His 41 points are the most he has scored in any of his four seasons, improving upon the 38 he scored as a plebe. A starter in all 51 games over his four-year career, Jones has been held without a point in just 7 contests.
