Holy Cross dropped a double-overtime decision (11-10) to then 14th-ranked Harvard, lost by one (12-11) to Lehigh and lost by one (10-9) against Loyola. The Crusaders lone win of the season was a 10-6 victory over Jacksonville last Saturday. Junior attackman Jon Vogel is atop the Crusaders scoring leader board with 28 points on a team-high 26 goals and 2 assists. Senior attackman Sean Wilkinson, who sat our Tuesday s game against Hartford, boasts an even scoring line with 13 goals and a team-high 12 assists. Additionally, Marc Buermann has played a pivotal scoring role with 22 points on 17 goals and 5 assists. Scoring, however, hasn t been the problem for Holy Cross, rather its inability to hold its foes under 10 goals. Nine of the Crusaders 10 opponents have reach double figures, including nationally-ranked Brown who scored 20 against them and Bucknell who put up 18. Holy Cross defense stands 64th among 68 teams, giving up goals per outing. Senior keeper Michael Ortlieb has faced 365 shots (143 more than Navy s John Connors, though he has played 2 more games). He has a goals-against average and a 44.8 save percentage. The defense, however, is averaging 8.50 caused turnovers per game which stands 11th nationally. Parker Greiwe is atop the HC list with 14 this spring. The defense has had to fight extraordinarily hard due to the lack of faceoff wins. The Crusaders are winning just 35.6 percent (90-253) of the draws this season and stand 63rd nationally. Senior Joe Reilly (88-237, 37.1) has take all but 16 of the faceoffs this season. GA GAA Sv Sv% 14 John Connors 2 115: Navy vs. Holy Cross - The Series Saturday s contest marks the 13th meeting between Navy and Holy Cross. The Mids own an 11-1 advantage in the series, including wins in each of the last two contests. Navy and Holy Cross have played one another three times in Worcester, Mass. (2005, 09, 11) and six times in Annapolis (2004, 06, 10, 12, 14, 15). Meanwhile, Navy and Holy Cross have met on neutral ground three times. In 2007, the two programs faced one another at SMU s Ford Stadium where the Mids dealt Holy Cross a 12-2 loss. It was Navy s first trip to Texas since the Mids defeated Johns Hopkins, 9-6, on May 8, 1971, at the Houston Astrodome. In 2008, Navy and Holy Cross were part of the Ford Patriot Cup which featured two high school games, along with two Div. I men s lax games (Rutgers vs. Army). Navy scored a 16-3 win over the Crusaders at Texas Stadium, the former home of the Dallas Cowboys. In 2013, Holy Cross earned its first victory over the Midshipmen, securing a 7-5 victory in a game that was played at Citi Field, the home of Major League Baseball s New York Mets. It was just the second Div. I men s lacrosse game played at a Major League Baseball venue. Navy has scored eight or more goals in 10 of the 12 games, while putting up double-figure goals in eight of the 12 (8 in 2005 and 2011, 7 in 2015). The Mids defense, meanwhile, has held Holy Cross to five or fewer goals in eight of the 12 games. 4 Last Time vs. Holy Cross Navy 7, #19 Holy Cross 6 Feb. 28, 2015 Worcester, Mass. Score By Quarters F Navy (2-2, 1-1) #19 Holy Cross (2-1, 1-1) Attackman Dave Little scored an extra-man goal with 2:55 left in the game to lead Navy to a 7-6 victory over 19th-ranked and previously unbeaten Holy Cross last February in Worcester, Mass. Freshman Jack Ray scored the first of his game-high three goals five minutes into the game to give Navy a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross answered when attackman Sean Wilkinson wrapped around the cage for his first of two goals. Navy regained the lead just 45 seconds later when rookie Spencer Coyle fed Gabe Voumard who powered in his shot past Michael Ortleib for the 2-1 advantage. Holy Cross would again tie the game, this time with 5.8 seconds remaining in the opening period, when Kevin Lux found a seam on extra-man. The second quarter featured much of the same with the two teams trading goals, but Navy took 4-3 lead into the half thanks to two second-quarter goals by Ray. Navy took advantage of a two-man advantage when T.J. Hanzsche found midfielder Kevin Wendel and Wendel sent his shot past two Crusdaders defensemen. Navy s defense held Holy Cross off the scoreboard for 30 minutes, but finally bent with just under 10 minutes to play in the game when the Crusaders scored back-toback goals by Marc Buermann and Wilkinson and pulled even with the Mids. The Crusaders took their first lead in the game when senior Clay Haarman slipped his defender and targeted his 8-yard shot with 4:46 remaining in the contest. Fifty-two seconds later, Navy executed its transition game to perfection as Ray made the extra pass to Hanzsche standing on the crease for the goal. Not only did Navy score the equalizer, the Mids were rewarded with an extra-man opportunity as Wilkinson was called for a one minute slash. 8 Dove Soars Among Faceoff s Elite Brady Dove etched his name into the Navy record books as one of the best faceoff men as a freshman in 2014, boasting the nation s 20th-best winning percentage (.564) and earning Second-Team All-Patriot League honors after turning in the program s secondmost single-season faceoff victories (163). Little did anyone know, it would be just a glimpse of what the future would hold for Dove and the Mids. A 2015 First-Team All-Patriot League selection, Dove finished last season ranked #8 in the country, winning 147 of the 235 draws (62.6). A Tewaaraton Award Watch List member, he placed fifth on the Mids singleseason wins list and set school records for faceoff wins and attempted by a sophomore. He opened the 2015 campaign by winning all 10 of his draws against VMI and combined with Joe Varello to win 21 of the 26 draws they took in the first 3 quarters. Dove was one of just three players nationally to go unbeaten in a game a year ago. He won 19 of the 25 draws he took against Lehigh ( ), tying the record for most wins at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It was also just one off the school record for wins. In his 34th game wearing a Navy uniform, Dove became the school record holder for career faceoff wins, a list that dates back just 30 years when faceoffs were first documented. He won 13 of the 22 draws against Loyola (3.19) and on his 12th attempt of the day, he moved past previous record holder Chris Pieczonka ( ) who posted 363 wins over 46 contests. Atop the record book with 392 faceoff wins, he is one of just three players in school history to win 300 faceoffs, achieving the feat last year in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals ( ). He is 8 wins shy of becoming only the ninth player in Patriot League history to win 400 draws. With 82 faceoff wins this season, he stands 17th on Navy s single-season wins list and is the only player in program history to have his named listed three times on that leader board (#2 with 163 in 2014, #5 with 147 in 105). He has lost the faceoff battle against the opposition just eight times in his career (2014 vs. Georgetown, Colgate, Army WP, Maryland; 2015 vs. Loyola, Army WP-PL Tournament; 2016 vs. Johns Hopkins, Boston U.) during his career (36 gms). He is the record holder for faceoff wins (163) and attempts (289) by a freshman and sophomore ( ). Some of those brothers attended the Academy at the same time, like the Looneys (Brendan 04, Steve 06, Billy 07) and the Lennons (Clipper 05, Bobby 09, Joe 10). Others, like Shane ( 09), Pat ( 14) and Brendan ( 17) Durkin, just missed playing alongside one another. Navy has two sets of brothers on this season s squad - Matt ( 17) and Casey ( 18) Rees and Connor ( 17) and Ryan Wade ( 19). Senior attackman T.J. Hanzsche s father, Tom, was a four-year letterwinner for the Mids from who played attack on four NCAA Quarterfinal teams. Senior goalie John Connors is the brother of four-year letterwinner Brendan Connors ( 10), who played on two NCAA Tournament teams and one (2007) of two Navy teams who went undefeated in Patriot League play. Junior goalkeeper Connor Wade and freshman attackman Ryan Wade are the sons of two-year lacrosse letterwinner Capt. John Wade ( 90) and nephew of three-year lacrosse letterwinner Tim Andrews ( 88). Matt and Casey Rees father, Cliff ( 88) played basketball alongside David Robinson at Navy and earned a trip to the Elite 8 his Plebe year. Sophomore long pole Steve Hincks father, Steven ( 78), garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors as a defenseman for the Mids his senior year. As a freshman he was a member of the Navy team that played in the program s first NCAA Championship Game and was an NCAA Semifinalist the following three seasons. 8 Navy in the Patriot League Mids Picked to finish Second in League After claiming a share of the program s sixth Patriot League regular-season title and first since 2008, Navy has been picked to finish second according to the 2016 Patriot League Preseason Poll. The cast of voters included the league s coaches and sports information directors. Loyola, who tied for third a year ago with a 5-3 mark, edged out both the league s regular-season champion - Navy - and tournament champion - Colgate - as this year s preseason favorite. The Greyhounds secured 12 of the 18 first-place votes (eligible for only 16, cannot vote for your own team) and totaled 122 points to stand atop the preseason vote. Although Navy accounted for five of the remaining six firstplace votes, the Mids held just a three-point advantage ( ) over Colgate for second. Army West Point was picked fourth with 85 points, followed by Bucknell (70), Boston U. (58), Lehigh (54), Holy Cross (29) and Lafayette (17). In addition to the preseason poll, the 2016 Preseason All-Patriot League Team was also unveiled. Headlining the 12-member team were reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Navy junior Chris Fennell, who was selected as the 2016 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and Loyola senior attackman Zach Herreweyers who was chosen as the preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Eight of the nine teams placed players on the preseason team, including Army West Point, Boston U., Colgate and Loyola with two selections apiece. Bucknell, Holy Cross, Navy and Lehigh each had one player chosen for the preseason squad. It marked just the fifth time in the 90-game series history the game had been decided in extra frames and the first double-ot game between the two. Hopkins has won four of the five. Navy also dropped its first game in the series to Boston U. on Feb. 27, a double-ot matchup (10-9). Perhaps no overtime game in school history gained more attention than when Andy Warner etched his name into Naval Academy lore by way of his overtime goal against 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins in 2010, snapping a 36-game losing streak to the Blue Jays. It was the Mids first win over Hopkins since Meanwhile, another overtime thriller saw Navy pull out a 9-8 triple-overtime victory over Colgate in the 2009 Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. Midfielder Joe Lennon scored four goals for the Mids, including the last three. It marked the Mids first overtime win in postseason action, as Navy previously lost NCAA Tournament decisions to Cortland State (2OT) in 1972 and Washington & Lee (3OT) in The Navy win also goes down in the record books as the longest Patriot League Tournament contest. Navy 13 Head Coach Rick Sowell On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100- plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action which featured a victory over 12th-ranked Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. In 2014, the Mids to put together a 3-5 Patriot League mark and earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since He guided Navy to a share of the Patriot League regularseason title in 2015 and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. He was named the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Sowell compiled a (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles ( ). The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak to top-10 opponents, as it last defeated a top-10 team on April 3, 2009, when the Mids defeated No. 8 Maryland, In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first-ever final four, narrowly losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20 in the country. It marked the school s first end-of-the-season national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA Division III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in Sowell was named the 1985 Division III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the Division III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him Division III First- Team All-America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history.
