3 Scouting the Blue Jays In his 14th season at Johns Hopkins, head coach Dave Pietramala has his Blue Jays playing at the top of their game at the right time of the year. The Blue Jays won their first five games of the year, before stumbling in consecutive games to nationally-ranked programs Syracuse (12-10), Virginia (11-10 OT) and North Carolina (13-9). Hopkins snapped its losing streak against Albany and has since won three in a row, including an 11-6 win over No. 3 Maryland last weekend at Homewood Field. Johns Hopkins is ranked among the top 20 in 10 statistical categories, including extra-man offense where it is ranked fourth nationally. The Blue Jays have scored 21 goals on 37 opportunities (56.8) and are coming off a 3-for-4 performance at Mount St. Mary s Monday evening. The Blue Jays are also ranked among the nation s best in assists per game (5th), points per game (10th), faceoff winning percentage (11th), scoring margin (11th), scoring offense (12th), shot percentage (14th), winning percentage (15th), ground balls per game (17th) and scoring defense (17th). Johns Hopkins, however, is ranked 65th in caused turnovers per game (5.5) and clearing percentage (83.7). Two of the top point producers in the country are on Hopkins roster this season. Ranked ninth in points per game (4.55) and fourth in assists per game (3.27) is junior attackman Wells Stanwick. He has produced 50 points on 14 goals and a team-best 36 assists. Meanwhile, sophomore attackman Ryan Brown stands 11th in points per game (4.30) and third nationally in goals per game (3.20). Brown owns 43 points on a team-best 32 goals and 11 assists. Senior attackman Brandon Benn (27) and sophomore middie Holden Cattoni (20) have also topped 20 goals this season. Senior Eric Schneider directs the defense from between the pipes where he owns an 8.11 goals-against average and has stopped 54.6 percent of the shots he has faced this season. The defense has surrendered double digits in three games this season, all three losses. Following Hopkins tradition, Pietramala once again has one of the premiere faceoff men in the country. Junior Drew Kennedy owns a 63.6 winning percentage and is coming off a 9-for-11 effort against Mount St. Mary s. entering the week, he was ranked 11th nationally with a 62.7 winning percentage. Kennedy has also picked up a team-best 109 ground balls and stands third in the country, grabbing better than 10 a game. Series vs. Johns Hopkins Overall J. The Blue Jays own a commanding advantage in the series, however Johns Hopkins amazing 36- game winning streak was snapped in 2010, when the Mids dealt the Blue Jays a 9-8 overtime loss. While Johns Hopkins owns a lead in games played in Annapolis, the Mids have won each of the last two played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The first of the two was the 9-8 extra-frame victory by the Mids in which Andy Warner scored the game winner. Meanwhile, in 2012, Navy dismantled the Blue Jays in an 8-2 route. Seven of the last 15 games between Navy and Johns Hopkins have been decided by one goal... additionally, four of the seven one-goal games have gone into extra minutes. Third-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell is 1-1 all-time against the Blue Jays. Navy Stats vs. Johns Hopkins No. Player GP G A Pts Sh GB FO/CT 2 Nik Mullen T.J. The Blue Jays scored the final 11 goals of the game after the two teams were deadlocked at 4-4 just over two minutes into the second half. The Mids took an early lead in the game when midfielder Gabe Voumard targeted his 8-yard shot over keeper Pierce Bassett s left shoulder 1:09 into the contest. Hopkins staged a rally just under the 10-minute mark when it took advantage of an offside call on the Mids. Middie Greg Edmonds picked up the ball and headed straight to the goal to tie things up. Junior Brandon Benn scored the next two goals for the Blue Jays, giving them a 3-1 advantage at the 12:24 mark in the second stanza. Navy battled its way back into the game when senior Bryce Dabbs fed Voumard on the left wing and a minute and a half later, T.J. Hanzsche took a Tucker Hull pass and fired it in from eight yards out to knot the game with 4:57 remaining in the opening half. The Blue Jays answered a minute later when midfielder Rob Guida wrapped around the right side of the goal and gave Hopkins a 4-3 advantage at the break. Voumard made it a hat trick when he sent a hard shot in at the 13:02 mark to even the score at 4-4. The game quickly turned in favor of Johns Hopkins when the Blue Jays scored back-to-back goals seven seconds apart to take a 6-4 lead. The Mids were never able to turn the momentum back in their favor as Johns Hopkins outscored Navy 11-0 over the final 28:02. April 20, 2013 Baltimore, Md. Sixth-seeded Navy will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to face the No. 3 seed Lehigh (7:00 pm), while the No. 5 seed will travel to the No. 4 seed. Colgate and Bucknell are vying for home field advantage with both teams owning a 4-3 Patriot League record. Both the Raiders and Bison have tough draws in the final week of conference play as Bucknell will travel to the league s lone unbeaten, Loyola, on Thursday evening, while Colgate will play host to Army on Friday night. If both win or both lose, Colgate would get the No. 4 seed and host Bucknell thanks to the Raiders 9-8 victory over the Bison during the regular season. If one wins and the other loses, the team that wins will have the better overall record and therefore host. The winners of the quarterfinal contests will then join Loyola and Army, the top two seeds, in the weekend semifinal and championship rounds which will be played at Loyola s Ridley Athletic Complex. The brackets will re-seed after the quarterfinal round. 4 Covering the Mids Navy Sports Information 566 Brownson Road Annapolis, Md Fax: Associate SID (Men s Lax) Stacie Michaud Office Phone Cell Phone michaud@usna.edu Interview Policy All interviews with Navy head coach Rick Sowell and/or Navy lacrosse players should be arranged through Associate SID Stacie Michaud. 7 Fantastic Faceoff Frosh Navy has struggled in its faceoff game over the last several years, but head coach Rick Sowell has high hopes that its youth will help spark a change. He had a remarkable performance against Holy Cross (3.1) where he claimed 19 of the 34 draws he took. The 19 wins tied as the third most in program history, just one off the record set in 1995 and later tied in It also marked the most wins by a Navy player since Logan West won 19 against Bucknell on March 3, Meanwhile, the 34 attempts are the most in school history, improving upon the previous mark of 32 set by Dan Sullivan (twice) in In the win over Lafayette, he won 12 of the 17 draws, including four in a row to start the fourth quarter in which Navy converted into four goals in just 1:14. Last year, Navy s Sean Reilly cracked the lineup where he won 31 of the 62 draws he took as a Plebe. He stands 19th on Navy s career wins list with 35 wins. With faceoff wins comes ground balls and Dove is leading the way in that category, as well. He has amassed 70 grounders which stand eighth on Navy s single-season list.
